She still hadn't heard if she would be allowed to enter the race, but just in case she had dropped her Austin-Healey off with her mechanic that morning for a quick check. After a shower in the dressing room at the Lincoln Center, she redid her hair and makeup and put on something more stylish than her practice leotard. She could take a cab home later if she needed to.
Even without using any vision enhancements, downtown New York City was a place of bright lights, motion, and people. She walked slowly, looking into windows, observing the activities of all the people around her, getting more of a feel for the world of 1964.
Cameron was unable to access part of her memory - the part where mission parameters were usually stored. Several nights spent reviewing all of the files she could access had given her no clue as to what her mission might be, or if she was just to live in this time line until she was given a mission. It might be that something she would see or here, or a radio transmission, might trigger a memory cascade and bring to her full mission alert. She just didn't know. Not knowing was an unpleasant and unfamiliar sensation.
But part of any mission for an infiltration unit was to establish and maintain a cover identity. Her claim to be Allison Young from Palmdale, California did partially explain her lack of New York mannerisms, but since she had been sent here with learning mode enabled, she was obviously expected to blend in on her own.
So Cameron walked along the sidewalk, listening to bits of conversation, watching how people interacted with each other in New York.
