Who: Rose Tyler and Galen.
When: Thursday evening.
Where: A NYC park bench
What: Rose is eating dinner.
Rating/status: Low/Complete

Attempting to remain optimistic was becoming a real chore.

Rose had been so sure that the story about the fanged thief was something that would catch the Doctor's attention. It was just so odd. Not to mention it sounded suspiciously like something that Rose had never considered the actual existence of before. He loved that sort of stuff.

But still, there was no sign of him or Jack. And, after nearly a month, Rose was finding it increasingly difficult to ignore the idea that maybe, just maybe, they hadn't wound up in the same place after all. Rose tried not to dwell on it for too long though. It meant considering the fact that she wasn't just temporarily stranded but permanently stuck. It meant never getting to see anyone she cared about ever again. Her mother wouldn't even be born for another three years.

All of it filled her stomach with a sense of dread that made it almost impossibly difficult to function. So she ignored it and did her best to keep busy. She got a job at the shop. Macy's to be precise. She wasn't overly fond of it, but it kept her off the streets at night. And when she wasn't working, she would explore. While technology was lacking, Rose had enough to keep her occupied. It was actually kind of nice. She could take her time and enjoy things at her leisure. Usually, with the Doctor, it was only a matter of time before they got into trouble and needed to run or find a way to save the day. Which wasn't bad, she loved it actually, but sometimes it made it difficult to get the full experience of the places they visited.

Not that she had stopped looking for things that were out of the ordinary. In fact, that was what she doing just now while sitting on a park bench at the World Fair in the middle of the night. She was waiting for the impossible, passing the time with chips that were rapidly growing cold. The crowd was thinning though and Rose knew she would probably have to head back soon. She had an early day tomorrow.

"Just five more minutes," muttered Rose. She popped another fry into her mouth and sat back to scan the crowd, trying to ignore the thought of going back to the tiny hotel room she had come to occupy in the last few weeks.

It had been another night walking the city streets, occasionally taking advantage of the primitive public transit system, learning the area, reading the newspapers. It was time to head back to his ship at the bottom of Meadow Lake next to the World's Fair.

He noticed a young woman sitting alone on a bench, eating something that was probably bad for her. Even on a passive scan, she had a temporal energy signature. Given the lateness of the hour and the lack of bystanders, he risked an active scan, knowing that nobody would be able to see the change in his eyes.

Galen walked over and sat down on the opposite end of the bench from the woman. "Hello, miss," he said softly. "Judging by your energy field, you're a fellow time traveler. You wouldn't happen to have a way off this rock, would you?"

Rose frowned. She had been so sure that she had finally gotten the hang of the brightly coloured clothes women seemed to prefer in this era. Not that it really mattered. Even if she mastered the look, she’d never truly manage to blend. Her accent always gave her away soon as she spoke. “No. Sorry. Lost my ride,” said Rose with a regretful shake of her head. It took her another moment to truly process everything that he had said. So maybe it wasn’t the clothes that had given her away after all.

“Energy field?" she asked, genuinely curious. "How you getting that then?” He sounded a bit like Jack. He had always been getting all sorts of readings on those gadgets of his. That had to mean that this man had some sort of technology then. Right? She could hope. Her finger almost itched from the desire to pull out the phone she kept in her back pocket. It had died not long after she got here seeing as she had nothing to charge it up with. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to make calls with it. But she hoped with a bit of the Doctor’s jiggery pokery he might be able to at least reach her somehow.

"Ah," Galen nodded. "I still have my ride, parked it at the bottom of Meadow Lake there, but the engines are down, need a recharge before I can even think of leaving."

"My name is Galen. I am a Mage. We tend to see things like that. You have picked up some temporal residue during your travels. Rather easy to detect if you know how."

He smiled at the young woman. "Given what I saw in you, I had hoped to hitch a ride, so to speak. But from what you said, I suppose you are as stuck here as I seem to be." He shrugged. "Have you run across any others like us?"

There was a space ship (or what she assumed was a space ship) parked at the bottom of the lake. Rose couldn’t help but smile at the image her mind conjured. “What do you need to recharge it?” She probably wouldn’t be able to help much. She tended to tune out the Doctor’s more lengthy lectures when he got to talking about how the TARDIS worked. Still, it didn’t hurt to ask.

“Nice to meet you, Galen. I’m Rose. So. . . mage,” she repeated, testing the word. “That’s a bit like a wizard, isn’t it?” She assumed it was more like a different species. Alien. However, she also knew enough from her travels to know that it wasn’t always polite to flat out ask if that was the case. “When are you from?” she finally settled on, “I’m from 2006.”

Rose shook her head. “Not really.” Not that she was aware of anyway. “But from what I’ve heard, the number doesn’t seem to be getting any smaller.”

"What I need is probably not available in this time. Antimatter. Or, a nuclear reactor might work. I suppose access to a major power generation station for a few months might work. You wouldn't know where I could get something like that, would you?"

Galen winced at her comparison. "You mean like long gray beards and magic rings and things like that? Well, I do have a staff I sometimes carry, but its more of a storage device than a magic wand. I apparently made a bad hyperspace jump in 2267 and ended up here. How about you? Time travel and warp jumps were not available in your era."

He nodded."Odd, that. Once is an accident. Twice is a coincidence. If we find a third, we might conclude outside forces in action."

"Are you getting on well enough? Might I offer you food, shelter, local funds?"

So a bit more than a spare part then? “Um, no. I mean, there’s a few big businesses. Ya know, manufacturers and the like. So they might have something.” Rose bit her thumb, taking a moment to think. “One of them makes weapons. I saw it on the bulletin yesterday. That might be a start. Probably nothing useful at first, but maybe you could build something. I could chip in if money was an issue.” Probably not much but Rose figured it was best to make friends where she could. She wouldn’t be much help with the actual technology, but she could at least try to offer something.

“You only get the beard if you’re really powerful, I think,” teased Rose. “The staff sounds cool though. What kind of stuff does it store?”

2267? That was a good number of years before the fifty-first century. Still, they sounded fairly advanced. Which was good. She couldn’t even mention a CD without getting a blank stare in return.

“No. Definitely not,” she agreed. “My friend, the Doctor, had this ship we were traveling in. This light sort of engulfed it and the next thing I know I’m in 1964. I thought he and Jack might have gotten caught up in it, but I haven’t been able to find them. Anyway, I know,” and the confidence was evident in her voice, “that if I could just get my phone to work, he’ll be able to find me.”

Rose bit her lip. She was almost tempted, if only to ease the burden. But as friendly as this guy seemed, she still knew very little about him. She had done the whole ‘trust the mysterious stranger’ bit. And, while she wouldn’t change it for the world, her decision to do so had also gotten her stuck in 1964. She couldn’t afford to make that mistake again. So she put on a smile. “Oh, I’ve done alright. Nothing terribly exciting, but I managed to find myself a job, food,” she holds up the half-forgotten basket as an example, “and a roof even. But thank-you.”

Galen nodded. "I may have to do that if I can't find anything else. Still, it would take many years with what is available now to completely recharge my ship before I could undertake a hyperspace jump."

"Think of my staff as a reserve battery and energy conduit. Magic requires energy."

"Your phone?" He shrugged. "The local communications network is primitive, hardwired. I assume you mean that item of electronic technogy you carry? I can charge the battery, but you would still have no way to connect with anything here."

"If you do need anything, let me know. The local currency is frightfully easy to duplicate. Just a matter of serial numbers to resolve. And I do have more than one cabin on my ship."

"I saw from one of the local bulletin boards that there are apparently more than just the two of us here from out of time." He sighed. "I wish I knew why this happened."

Rose swallowed. She really didn’t like to think about being stuck in the 1960's for that long. Still, she refused to throw in the towel just yet. “I’ll keep an eye open for anything that might be useful anyway. Just in case.”

Rose shifted and pulled her phone out of her pocket. “Could you?” she asked hopefully. “Because a recharge would be fantastic. The Doctor’s really clever. So I may not be able to call him, but if anyone’s going to be able to get in contact, it would be him that would figure it out.” Rose had faith. Perhaps a bit too much, but it was there all the same.

She nodded. “Whatever it is, it must be really powerful,” guessed Rose. “And likely not something you would typically find in 1964.” Going with what she knew from past experiences, Rose assumed that they were dealing with some sort of alien. Figuring out a possible motive though was a bit trickier. She had first assumed that it was all connected to the Doctor in someway, but the man in front of her didn’t appear to know him, which pushed her to eliminate that possibility.

Galen concentrated on scanning the small device for a moment, learning the circuitry. This woman was a fellow castaway - he didn't care if she noticed the change in his eyes while he worked his little magic. Finally, he made a small gesture with one hand to seal the spell.

"There. I've Attached your phone to my ship. As long as you are within about..." he converted distance measurements in his head, "20 miles or so, it will stay charged. Unfortunately, your phone has a very low power transmitter. But if you are within about a half mile or so of my ship, dial zero, zero, zero, and push send and it will connect to the communications panel in my ship. Just in case you need to reach me for some reason, you understand."

He thought for a few seconds. "You mentioned the doctor. Would that be The Doctor? Strange fellow, blue box, travels time and space? You never know what he will look like?"

Rose watched eagerly as he worked on her phone and then gave him her biggest smile when he handed it back. It made her feel lighter just to know that she had a little piece of home back. "Thank you so much!" She doesn't so much as pause before going to check to see if there were any missed messages or voice mails. But before she was finished, his next statement made her look up hopefully.

"That's him," said Rose excitedly before shaking her head, suddenly unsure if they were talking about the same person. "Well, maybe. You always know what he's going to look like. He never changes his clothes."

Galen frowned. "The Circle - the Order I belong to - mentions someone called The Doctor in their archives. There was something, he... regenerates, I think was the word. Doesn't die. When he passes through, he may look different from the last time. Stuff of legend."

"It also mentioned that you crossed him at your own peril." He chuckled briefly. "For the Circle to worry about staying on someone's good side, your Doctor must be quite the person. I can see why you are looking for him. Been together long?"

He leaned back on the bench and smiled wryly. "And of course I can hope if you find him, you will remember Galen and let him... hitch a ride, I believe the expression is."

That didn't sound right. Rose knew perfectly well how difficult it could be to get the Doctor to talk about himself or just about anything significant. However, she didn't think he would keep something like that a secret. "That sounds like a tall tale to me."

Rose chuckled. "Yes. Well, he can get grouchy." He wasn't someone that you wanted as your enemy, that was for sure. She had also seen the number of people he tried to help, including some he probably should have just let be. "A while, yeah. And there's Jack now too. We met him in the middle of World War II."

Rose didn't hesitate. She had no reason to believe why the Doctor wouldn't help this man. "Of course. He may need to stay and get things sorted first. 'Specially if there are more people popping up. But he'll help you out."

"It is all tall tales and legends as far as I am concerned. Where I'm from, no one has sighted The Doctor for many years."

Galen smiled at the young woman. I certainly hope you find both your friends. From what I read on bulletin boards around town there are a number of people out of their own time and place here now."

"I would certainly appreciate the assistance. Until you do locate your friends, you shouldn't hesitate to call on me if you do need anything. For that matter, would you like me to walk you home tonight? The newspapers are full of stories of various odd individuals out at night."

It went without saying, of course, that Rose felt the same way. "Hopefully he'll be able to land properly." Rose couldn't help but think about how she had arrived. It worried her because she could have sworn that they had all been caught in it. Not just her.

Rose wasn't going to tell him that it was indeed those strange occurrences that had her sitting on a park bench in the middle of the night. He might think she lost her mind. So instead she gave him an appreciative smile and said, "Might be best." It would be good to have someone to at least know where she was in case of an emergency. She stood and, after taking one last chip (which was well past just cold now), she deposited the basket in the trash and dusted off her hands. "If you really don't mind, that is. It's not too far from here."

"It will be no trouble at all," Galen said as he stood up. "It may even give me a chance to meet one of those costumed characters.

He offered his arm to Rose. "Lead the way, and you can tell me more about yourself as we walk."

Oh! Rose had read about them too. 1964 certainly was a trip and a half. "They're something else, aren't they?" said Rose. "No one would think about dressing up like that where I'm from. Unless, of course. It was Halloween."

Rose took the offered arm before giving a slight shrug. "Not much to tell really," she said. She turned right once they reached the gate. It had taken her a bit, but she had eventually managed to find her away around key points in the city. "What did ya have in mind?"

"They certainly are," he agreed.

"Oh, nothing special, just passing the time. What you do, have you met any other castaways, things like that." He shrugged, "I get most of the local dialect from radio and television, but you are much closer to these years than I am, even if your accent is not from New York."

"I'm working down at the shoppe," said Rose. "Macy's." It was big enough that she was certain some out of timers must of come in to get the necessities at some point. She'd probably be able to spot some of too now that she knew that there were officially more people stranded like her. "I never thought to look that closely. But I suppose it'll be something to keep an eye on now."

"There you go then," he nodded. "Getting settled in this rather odd place."

"And your accent is British. Rather close to my native way of speaking, so it was the accent I adapted when I found myself here. A course of late night television and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes."

Galen smiled at Rose. "What sort of adventures have you had with this Doctor of legend?"

"That's right. I'm from London," explained Rose with a nod. "The Doctor always says that if you act like you belong, then people will think that you do." Rose wasn't sure if she believed that completely. It worked for him, of course. But he was much more experienced at time travel and all that. "Your accent is pretty good though. You talk a bit . . . well, it sounds a bit stiff. But it's not too bad."

Rose grinned. "Oh, all sorts. I met Charles Dickens once. He was nice. And just recently we dropped an egg off on Raxacoricofallapatorius." She said the last word quite easily and with a hint of pride. It had taken her forever to master it and she wasn't going to forget it anytime soon.

"Stiff?" Galen shrugged. "I suppose so. I am speaking a foreign language of sorts. Many words, slang... the entire dialect is different. I am having to filter as I speak."

"Until now, my time travel has been linear. I envy your free travel of time and space. I have traveled much of the explored universe, but it was a task I was set, not an adventure. Now that task is done, so I suppose this is as good a place as any to end up - at least until I recharge my engines."

"What will you do if you can't find your Doctor? Do you want to stay here, or move on?"

"Hm, it sounds important though," observed Rose, a tinge of curiosity in her voice. "What were you doing? Or is that a secret?"

"I'll find him," stated Rose confidently. Or he would find her. Either way, it wasn't a matter of if, just a matter of when.

Galen pointed to the sky with his free hand. "There are races out there that have been around for millions of years longer than we humans. One of them - we called them the Shadow - wanted to rule it all. They no longer exist. And of late I have been cleaning up bits of advanced technology left floating about after the war, least it provide a temptation to try to follow in the footsteps of the Shadow, or the Vorlon, who were also a most bothersome people."

He nodded. "I hope that this Doctor of yours proves to be a resourceful gentleman and lives up to your expectations."

His story sounded vaguely like one that Rose was all too familiar as of late. The aftermath of the Time War was something that they had seen in all sorts of different ways through out their travels. But most of all, Rose still saw it all too often in the Doctor's haunted stare when he thought no one was paying any attention. She gave him a sympathetic smile and squeezed his arm gently. "Well, I wish you luck."

They rounded one last corner, finally stumbling upon the small hotel that Rose tended to call home as of late. "Well, this is me." She gave Galen a wide smile and, without a second thought, wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "Thank you so much," she said sincerely. "And the same goes for you okay. If you ever need anything, you know where to find me. Don't be a stranger."

Startled, it took Galen a few seconds to respond to Rose's hug. "I'll be around - you never know where you might see me. Good luck to you, too."

Letting go of her arm, he raised his other hand, almost in a benediction. "Walk in the light,Rose," he said as she walked off.
