Who: Rose Tyler and Galen.
When: Thursday evening.
Where: A NYC park bench
What: Rose is eating dinner.
Rating/status: Low/Complete

Attempting to remain optimistic was becoming a real chore.

Rose had been so sure that the story about the fanged thief was something that would catch the Doctor's attention. It was just so odd. Not to mention it sounded suspiciously like something that Rose had never considered the actual existence of before. He loved that sort of stuff.

But still, there was no sign of him or Jack. And, after nearly a month, Rose was finding it increasingly difficult to ignore the idea that maybe, just maybe, they hadn't wound up in the same place after all. Rose tried not to dwell on it for too long though. It meant considering the fact that she wasn't just temporarily stranded but permanently stuck. It meant never getting to see anyone she cared about ever again. Her mother wouldn't even be born for another three years.

All of it filled her stomach with a sense of dread that made it almost impossibly difficult to function. So she ignored it and did her best to keep busy. She got a job at the shop. Macy's to be precise. She wasn't overly fond of it, but it kept her off the streets at night. And when she wasn't working, she would explore. While technology was lacking, Rose had enough to keep her occupied. It was actually kind of nice. She could take her time and enjoy things at her leisure. Usually, with the Doctor, it was only a matter of time before they got into trouble and needed to run or find a way to save the day. Which wasn't bad, she loved it actually, but sometimes it made it difficult to get the full experience of the places they visited.

Not that she had stopped looking for things that were out of the ordinary. In fact, that was what she doing just now while sitting on a park bench at the World Fair in the middle of the night. She was waiting for the impossible, passing the time with chips that were rapidly growing cold. The crowd was thinning though and Rose knew she would probably have to head back soon. She had an early day tomorrow.

"Just five more minutes," muttered Rose. She popped another fry into her mouth and sat back to scan the crowd, trying to ignore the thought of going back to the tiny hotel room she had come to occupy in the last few weeks.

"Hm, it sounds important though," observed Rose, a tinge of curiosity in her voice. "What were you doing? Or is that a secret?"

"I'll find him," stated Rose confidently. Or he would find her. Either way, it wasn't a matter of if, just a matter of when.

Galen pointed to the sky with his free hand. "There are races out there that have been around for millions of years longer than we humans. One of them - we called them the Shadow - wanted to rule it all. They no longer exist. And of late I have been cleaning up bits of advanced technology left floating about after the war, least it provide a temptation to try to follow in the footsteps of the Shadow, or the Vorlon, who were also a most bothersome people."

He nodded. "I hope that this Doctor of yours proves to be a resourceful gentleman and lives up to your expectations."

His story sounded vaguely like one that Rose was all too familiar as of late. The aftermath of the Time War was something that they had seen in all sorts of different ways through out their travels. But most of all, Rose still saw it all too often in the Doctor's haunted stare when he thought no one was paying any attention. She gave him a sympathetic smile and squeezed his arm gently. "Well, I wish you luck."

They rounded one last corner, finally stumbling upon the small hotel that Rose tended to call home as of late. "Well, this is me." She gave Galen a wide smile and, without a second thought, wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "Thank you so much," she said sincerely. "And the same goes for you okay. If you ever need anything, you know where to find me. Don't be a stranger."

Startled, it took Galen a few seconds to respond to Rose's hug. "I'll be around - you never know where you might see me. Good luck to you, too."

Letting go of her arm, he raised his other hand, almost in a benediction. "Walk in the light,Rose," he said as she walked off.
