Who: Romana & the (10th) Doctor.
When: Thursday Afternoon.
Where: The streets of this Winter Wonderland.
What: Getting to know the place.
Rating/status: OPEN/TBD

Well, this was certainly unexpected. Not only she had awoken from a vert pleasant nap to find herself stranded in the middle of a city. New York City to be precise. If you wanted to be more specific, August 11th 1964. It had a nice ring to it. Romana remembered hearing wonders about the time period. Snow at the beginning of August was certainly not one of them.

Yet another mystery to investigate. After getting a room on the so-called Welcome Center, Romana had changed into the closest thing she had to winter clothes (not that the cold made any difference to her). She walked outside, feet sinking under impossibly white snow. It certainly looked dangerous.

But Romana was not about to let that inconvenience get in the way of research. she walked down the street, careful with the icy patches. It wouldn't do to start falling just after arriving here.

She stood by a stoplight, examining the names of the streets and pondering her actions. A few others had braved the elements as well. they passed by, trying to pay no attention to the girl in the pink outfit.

The Doctor had ventured out himself, needing groceries to stock the TARDIS kitchen as he was now playing host to several young women. He'd found that his chocolate stores tended to disappear at a rapid pace these days. He supposed, given how much chocolate his female companions generally consumed on their own, it was no surprise that he had trouble keeping up with multiple women.

Though, really, it wasn't entirely their fault. He ate rather a lot of chocolate as well, especially with bananas.

He was taking a risk, going out in the snow. Snow had not been a herald of good things to come for him for this entire incarnation, and unnatural snow was even worse.

So, while he was a bit surprised by the woman he saw standing near the stoplight, he was not entirely surprised that something unlikely (indeed, impossible) had happened. He was rather more surprised that it was an unlikely and impossible event that didn't appear to have the potential to immediately kill him.

"Romana?" he asked, his voice squeaking at the end of her name, the way it usually did when he was caught completely off guard. He supposed, if he looked like he'd seen a ghost, it only made sense. After all, she was supposed to be dead.

She sensed his presence before hearing him. Another Gallifreyan nearby. And she only knew one who would call her by that short version of her name and would be most likely to be on this planet.

But the voice was not familiar. A regeneration? Well, this was the Doctor, it wouldn't a surprise. But still...

She turned to face the tall, thin man who had just spoken.

"Doctor?" she said uncertainly.

"Romanadvoratrelundar," he said, so astonished that he used her full name without entirely realizing it. "You're here." He grinned, his astonishment and shock giving way to excitement. He'd even lapsed back into Gallifreyan, the change almost automatic at the sensation of another Gallifreyan mind close enough to touch.

"You're here!" he repeated. "This is brilliant!" He threw his arms around her in an enthusiastic hug that lifted her off of her feet and spun her around. "Hello!"

It was the Doctor! Romana couldn't help laughing when he picked her up. It may had been only a few decades since they last saw each other, but she had truly missed him.

"It's so good to see you!" she said. She took one step away the moment her feet touched the ground to have a better look at this new face. "Not bad," she said. "Not bad at all. How long has it been since you regenerated?"

The moment she inquired after his regeneration, the Doctor's smile dimmed, and his expression became guarded. There was a certain quality to him, a weight that had not been there when he had last seen Romana in her current incarnation. He drew his hands back and tucked them in the pockets of his long coat.

"Not that long, actually," he admitted, knowing that Romana would learn the truth--at least in this--one way or another. She was clever, so very clever, at times far more so than him. "I sort of cheated. Channeled the excess energy into a handy receptacle once I'd healed enough. Bit of a special case. I've had this body for years. Didn't want to get rid of it if I didn't have to, you see. I'm rather fond of it. Still, that's not all that important, is it?" His smile brightened with forced cheer that the Doctor had practiced for so long he very nearly pulled off the lie. "Look at you! How are you? How long have you been here? Do you happen to have your TARDIS? A place to stay? Where were you last?" She seemed to be from before the Daleks had taken her captive, which was good. Very good. Also very bad, if the Doctor couldn't keep the Time War a secret.

Romana's smile faded a little. Something felt off about the Doctor's reaction. Then he was talking again and oh, how had she missed his endless talking! She had missed all of him, actually.

"It is a nice body," she agreed. "As for the rest of your questions: I'm fine, thank you for asking. I'm afraid my TARDIS - the one I was building anyway - is all the way back in E-Universe. I currently have a room at the so called Welcome Center, but if you still had my old room stashed in the TARDIS I wouldn't say no to it. And last I was off in a planet called Bertrand, negotiating the release of a group of political prisoners when I woke up here one morning." And now it was her turn to ask a question. "How long have you been here?"

She was so innocent, the Doctor thought, so blissfully unaware of what would become of her. The Daleks had had a profound impact on Romana in his past, her future, and the war even moreso. It was almost painful to see her as she was before everything fell apart, painful, but welcome. He had clung so desperately to an image of the Time Lords as they had been before the conflict, and here Romana was, reminding him of the days when that image had been the truth.

"A few weeks," he told her, tone bright and casual, as though he didn't mind at all being trapped in New York, and quite honestly, a part of him didn't. He had no desire to return to a world where he was meant to die. "My TARDIS is a bit stuck. She can change location within a limited area, but something's stopping her from traveling in time. I'd love it if you came to stay with me. A few of my friends already are. You'd get along splendidly, I'd wager."

She could imagine he'd be happy to be on Earth. His attachment to this planet was something people at Gallefry discussed in hushed tones and dissaproving voices. She had been like that. Until she met the man himself and learned to love advantures. How could she go back after that?

"Sounds like a strange force at work," Romana said. "Any ideas what is causing it?" She smiled at his offer. "I'd be delighted. I would have to get my things off the Welcome Center - they gave a lovely room, but too small. Not enough space for books. Can you imagine that?"

She didn't admit she was rather nervous at meeting other companions. She was sure she'd like them - the Doctor seemed to like them - but what would they think of her?

"Not at all," he confessed. "There seems to be some sort of barrier, and this certainly isn't our native dimension, but it's near enough that the TARDIS can still get by. That's something of a relief." She was the last TARDIS in existence, the last remnant he had of home. He wasn't certain he could take losing her, not these days, not if he couldn't have a life with Rose, which at the moment seemed an impossibility. They were almost strangers from her point of view.

"I'm parked not far from the Welcome Center, actually. I was on my way to get some groceries, but those can wait. Would you like me to pop back to the center with you and help you move your things?"

"Interesting indeed," agreed Romana. In the middle of such a strange situation, it was a relief when some things remained familiar and close. Like the TARDIS. And she knew the Doctor was very attached to his own TARDIS.

"That would be wonderful!" she said. "And on the way, I'd love to hear any other information you got about this strange dimension. I don't think we ever visited this period before either."

"I have," the Doctor said blithely, even as he offered Romana his arm so they could start down the sidewalk together toward the Welcome Center. "A few times, actually. Not always on purpose. It's not so bad. At least we aren't in the 1940s. Or the 1980s.

"I honestly don't know much more about what's going on," he continued. "People are being pulled out of their proper timelines and places, of course, but why or how or by whom or what I couldn't say."

"What was so bad about the 1940s and 1980s?" she asked as she took the ofered arm and started walking. "I can't say my knowledge of Earth is as extensive as yours. We rarely visited. I did like Paris."

"Anyone else we know?" Romana said. "Have you notice any patterns, like ages or medical history? Or if they sepparated from their group? K-9 seemed to have been left behind." She looked down in sadness. She knew the group that had been travelling with her would take proper care of K-9, but she missed him so much.

"World War II. That was the 1940s. The 1980s were just ... Well. There's no need to go into that. They're not important."

The Doctor flashed a friendly smile at a pair of locals--husband and wife, it seemed--who walked by. When they smiled back, it suddenly hit him that they thought he and Romana were just like them: together. He was barely able to subdue the desire to suddenly pull away from her to make it perfectly clear that there were absolutely no domestics. Not when he wasn't with Rose.

"No one you've met," he said in reply to her question regarding his companions. "Sorry. I suppose a few might show up. There's no pattern that I've seen. Amy was separated from her--well, her traveling companion. Same with Rose and Martha and Donna. A friend of mine, Jack, he's here with his team." The Doctor made a face at the word. He hated using that word. "They're from scattered points in time as well. People seem to be arriving singly, for the most part."

"One can assume you know which are the decades to visit when it comes to this planet," Romana said.

She smiled at the Doctor waved at the couple. She was tempted to move a little closer to him just to bug him a litte, but a part of her was really missing the Doctor she had known first.

"I see," Romana thought it made perfect sense. After all, it had been mostly the two of them (plus K-9) during her time of the TARDIS. Although...

"I take it you and Adric parted ways then?" she asked. Of course they did. Companions were bound to leave sooner or later. "Well, it's a relief that even if people arrive singly they can find each other. Although it must be confusing if their timelines don't match."

The Doctor did indeed have a fairly good idea of when to visit Earth, despite his often haphazard landings, and he was thankful to say that the decade in which they were currently trapped was one of the better ones.

At the mention of Adric, however, he seemed to withdraw again. He lowered his gaze to the sidewalk and swallowed against another unwelcome swell of emotion. "We did, but ... Well. It's complicated. I don't like to dwell on it. Not really. It was a long time ago for me. I must have traveled with a dozen other people since then."

Romana was not surprised to hear about Adric not being around. But she had to admit she was a bit crestfallen. It would have been nice to have another familiar face.

"Maybe he'll show up," she said, trying to conceal her dissapointment. She smiled at him. "So, Doctor... what makes this particular decade so interesting?"

"It's a very busy decade. You have the moon landing, the Beatles, political independence for African countries, President Kennedy, the civil rights movement, the Bay of Pigs, civil unrest in China, the Vietnam War--which, technically, wasn't a war since it was never declared--the first computer game, the first ATM, Elvis Presley ... Honestly, there's too much to condense into a single conversation. You should have a look at the library in the TARDIS. There should be plenty there to keep you busy."

"Oh, I plan to Doctor," she admitted. "Other than going and exploring this place, which I fully intent to, what better way to learn about it than through the books? You always keep such an impressive collection in the TARDIS."

They had arrived to the Welcome Center. "Would you like to wait for me here?" she offered. "I won't be long as I only need my bag and my notes."

The Doctor grinned at her as she complimented his collection. He did tend to acquire things, and useful things at that. Besides, his TARDIS was splendid when it came to accommodations, right on down to her library.

"Go on then," he said when they reached the Welcome Center and Romana made her offer. "I'll be here once you've got it all. Then it's just a quick hop-skip and step 'round the corner to the TARDIS."

"Less than four minutes," Romana said before walking inside. It was indeed a short visit. All her things fit into a small bag. She was tempted to put her sonic screwdriver there as well, but placed in her pocket instead. You never knew when it was going to be needed.

After leaving a note and her keys at the reception, she was out once again. "Less than four minutes," she said again with a smile. "I look forward to being inside the TARDIS again."

The Doctor's impeccable sense of time told him exactly how long Romana had taken, and it was indeed under four minutes. He beamed at her as he held out a hand for her bag. Oh, he was still hopelessly rude in this incarnation, but he was also something of a ladies' man.

"Less than four minutes to the TARDIS as well. She's a bit different than when you last saw her, but I'm sure she still has your room ready to go. She's quite good at that. Even managed to pull up Amy's room for her even though we met out of order."

"A good deal since you last saw it, yes," the Doctor warned. "I like it. In fact, I like it so much, I've kept it through two regenerations. Once you're settled, you can reacquaint yourself. Just don't give the TARDIS an excuse to go anywhere. I don't fancy being shouted at if anyone comes looking for her after a long day of work and she isn't where she ought to be."

"I won't take her anywhere," Romana promised. "Besides, I've heard that the best way to get to know this city is to walk around. I look forward to exploring it."

"Is there anything I should know in the particular about the people currently living in the TARDIS?" she asked. Even if she hadn't met them yet, it would be nice to know if there was anything she would saying in front of them - or anything that should be said in front of them anyway.

The Doctor paused just outside the doors to the TARDIS with one hand on the handle. "Things you should know? No. Not really. Except ... none of them have ever met another Time Lord. Well, actually, Martha has. The Master. And I suppose Donna has. Sort of. In a way. No one you know. It's complicated."

He considered, momentarily, telling Romana more, telling her what he'd told his companions of Gallifrey, what he'd seen with them, but decided against it. Details had a way of coming out on their own. No need for him to help things along, not when, eventually, talking to his companions would lead Romana to asking awkward questions.

"The Master?" Romana's eyebrows raised in alarm. "Please tell me he's nowhere to be found in this place, Doctor!"

"I'm sure we will all get along wonderfully," she said as she waited for the Doctor to open the door. "Maybe other Time Lords will show up... or the same." A part of her remained hopeful and really missing "her" Doctor.

"He's gone," the Doctor said, and in the privacy of his mind thought, Like you. "Definitely not here. I'd know if he were here. I'd feel him." At least, he liked to think that he would. He'd had a sense of his old friend on Earth, when the Master had managed to resurrect himself

"I'm sure you and the rest will get on swimmingly. Well, maybe not swimmingly isn't the right word, but I'm sure you'll all have plenty to gossip about. Please try not to keep the laughing and pointing to a minimum. It's just eerie when I walk in on two women doing that. Rose and Sarah Jane couldn't stop, and they never did tell me what it was all about."

Romana didn't press the issue. If the Master was gone, it was for the best. She certainly didn't want to see him again.

"I promise I'll try," she said. "Although the fact that you've mentioned it has piqued my curiosity. I don't think I've ever been one to do any of those things." Sounded like fun though.

Romana stepped in, ready to be surprised. And surprised she was.

The first thing she noticed were the colors. Gone were the white and the metals of those days. The console was still there of course, but it was not the one she remembered. The whole room lacked the comforting semblance of sobriety of the TARDIS she remembered.

And yet, she found solace in it. Appearances aside, this had been her home of sorts for a long time. She had missed it.

"I like it," she finally said. "It has a nice organic feel to it." She moved closer to the console. "You've expanded it quite a bit."

It seemed ages since he'd had a layout in the control room that was as Spartan as Romana was accustomed to seeing. Before the Time War, he'd had a lovely Gothic theme that he had quite liked, though these days it seemed too dour in addition to being a painful reminder of the past.

"I'm glad," he said, when Romana expressed her approval. "She's been like this for a while now, since the last me. Your room ought to be the same as it was, though, unless you'd like a change. Do you want me to help you find it? There are so many more people here than usual that the TARDIS might not be able to put the door exactly where you expect it."
