VELINA RISITH + GENESIS GERMAN
shopping spree and a coffee recharge leads to talk of boys
June 20th | Fondante's inferno | PG
There was something good about shopping with Vee that Gigi just enjoyed. It wasn’t that Vee tended to shoot right for designer, or that she knew labels and in some instances seemed to know the designers, Gigi was certain she was imagining that part of things, but Vee was honest.

If Gigi tried on something and it didn’t flatter her figure, or the colour or cut were wrong, she knew that Vee would tell her. There would be no pussyfooting with ‘oh, but you’re cute, so it works’, no. Straight honesty was the best thing when shopping and Velina gave her that.

Regardless of the why for the shopping trip, Genesis checking her manicure again, short nails, rounded on her fingers with cute little decals on her nails, nothing like Vee’s impressive as hell talon nails that Gen just could not work with. “So, have you ever had an incident with your nails?” She wasn’t planning on growing them to match Vee, not really. She couldn’t see herself during hand to hand combat being able to throw a punch if she was stabbing herself after all.

Besides, the zipper on her pants that she’d just bought would be a battle. She’d probably be watching the carbs for a while to fit into them but she liked her butt in them.

There wasn’t anyone in the delicious little town that Vee would rather shop with. Gigi was different than the numerous other empty friendships she’d made in other places. Those girls had simply wanted an ‘in’ with her connections or clout for their pathetic excuses of social media pages. For a time she thought to surround herself with others who had similar followings but found each and every single one of them to be lacking substance. What a bore they had all been, and Velina Risith loathed boredom.

Genesis was a breath of fresh air and someone she genuinely found interesting. It didn’t hurt that the other girl seemed to appreciate her brutal honesty when it came to just about anything.

Her eyes followed Gigi’s down to the adorable manicure she was sporting. Vee was a huge fan of the cute little decals that were unique to her friend’s style. A sense of personal style was incredibly important, after all! It helped oneself stand out in the crowd of copycat faces.

“Going to need you to elaborate on ‘incident’, Cupcake,” she replied with a smirk.

It’d taken a little while for Genesis to get out of the star struck phase of knowing Vee, being personal friends with her. Instagram and TikTok and all those things were very popular in Santa Clarita, and Genesis did okay with her social media. People who didn’t know her tended to think she fit a different mould, and she knew it was because she didn’t look the part. It worked okay to feel like something was coming from it.

And sure, she liked having followers and being popular and people liking her posts, but it was hardly the most important thing she did. Vee was several thousand leagues above her though, in that she could sustain a lifestyle on her online presence, she had that coveted little tick. And Gigi was rather happy to exist in Vee’s shadow. Until she discovered that Vee truly wanted a friend and Gigi could be that, could be just there for a genuine friendship.

She had so few, she didn’t really care where they came from. Throw in that Vee was genuine and rather sweet when she wanted to be, well Gigi was all in on that friendship.

“Ripped clothes, stabbed eyes, stabbing your hair, poking people when you hand things?” Honestly, Gen wasn’t sure how Vee managed to put on her bra some days.

If she were in the habit of being honest with herself, Vee would admit that at first? She had thrived off Genesis’ star-struck behavior around her. That really was the whole point of her venturing into social media to begin with wasn’t it? That validation she craved so desperately came so easily from strangers behind a screen. She hadn’t anticipated receiving it in person, but once she began to be recognized while out and about, it added a whole new delightful level to things.

Velina wasn’t sure when over the course of knowing Gigi things had changed. Somewhere along the way she realized she wanted- and possibly needed- a genuine friendship. There were zero regrets on her end, much like Gigi, Vee was all in.

“Ripped clothes? Never. Hair? I’ve lost some to nail-related incidents. Usually in my sleep. It always grows back. I only poke when it’s warranted, and as for stabbed eyes? A few. But not my own.” Vee winked to emphasize that last part. It had been a while since she’d taken someone’s eyes during an anger-fueled temper tantrum, perhaps she was overdue.

Shaking those thoughts from her head, she shuffled her bags on her arm and smiled. “Thinking of growing yours out?”

It must come with practise. Gigi had seen some other people with them, glamorous people who could maintain insanely long and stylish nails. It wasn’t surprising that Vee didn’t really have trouble with them, although Gigi did give her a look at the mention of poking out eyes with her nails -probably at the bar, probably people who deserved it.

If Gen told herself that it was fine. Suitable response to an irresponsible action.

“Not really, I mean, I don’t think I could avoid stabbing myself or even get my pants on with those things.” And there was the matter of ‘alone time’, no, that would be far too scary. “Besides, I mess up typing enough with short nails, I’d break them all on my keyboard in no time.” She knew she was meant to use the pads of her fingers, but sometimes she did just use her fingertips. Ruined a manicure or two here and there.

“It’s definitely more your look than mine.” And Gen wasn’t jealous about it, Vee was just that kind of girl; dark and dangerous, sexy and alluring. Gen was… cute, but in a striking way. She made her peace with that a long time ago.

Velina smirked at that pointed look Genesis tossed her way over the eyeball gouging. She wasn’t ashamed of her extracurricular activities, quite the opposite actually. No one on the receiving end of her wrath had been innocent. They were all deserving, and when it came to the other delightful aspects of her species? Well, all of those partners had been willing, hadn’t they?

Shuddering at the horror of even entertaining the notion of breaking a nail, Vee arched an eyebrow at her friend. “You type with your nails?” She couldn’t imagine, the clacking noise enough would cause an overwhelming need to pull her own hair out.

“Your’s suit you,” she stated matter-of-factly. “They are incredibly cute and very Gigi.” Not that she would mind if the other girl decided she wanted to embrace a longer nail aesthetic. Vee was a very jealous and possessive person by nature, but she had yet to encounter a single instance where she found herself seeing green in reference to Genesis. Which was an odd revelation, but she chalked it up to ‘normal’ friend shit.

“Alright. Where to next?”

“Well, they’re short, and I get lazy.” It wasn’t like she did it all the time -just rage filled stab attacks when someone online was being stupid usually. But she liked that hers were kind of her own.

As much as she idolised what Vee stood for, all the confidence and success and give no quarter attitude, Gigi knew that it was Vee, and not really something Gigi could pull off. She was building her own confidence, and a lot of that was helped along by Velina’s honesty, but she wasn’t about to try and pull off Vee’s style at all.

“How about coffee? A little recharge after the shopping.” She could do with the coffee boost at this point, and to get off her feet for a while. “Browsing takes a lot out of me, I dunno about you.”

“Short and cute.” she reiterated. “Lazy or not? The horrors of chipping polish on keyboards or not? Cute.” Part of Velina admired Gigi for how effortlessly adorable she could be. It was almost like the other girl didn’t have to try- she just was. Most of what Vee achieved was stolen, manipulated, or fabricated. She loved her life and wouldn’t change anything about it, but sometimes? She grew tired of trying so hard.

“I have the stamina of fifty men, even when it comes to browsing.” Granted, she had fed the night before, so maybe she was especially energized today. “But I will never turn down coffee.” Winking again, she hooked her arm with Genesis’ and began to head toward Fondante’s.

Cute was simple for Gigi; she was fairly attractive, but not overly so that it intimidated a lot of girls, she was friendly, which helped her smile a lot, and she was a nerd. It all added to cute, very easily. If she wanted to be sexy like Vee, well that took about four hours work and a lot of toning down the smiling.

“Okay, well, I don’t even have the stamina of a small child, so I desperately need a coffee boost or I’m going to turn into a raging-- well, you know.” Her temper was largely under control thanks to meditation and yoga. But there were definitely enough triggers that she shouldn’t push it.

Least of all while shopping.

“Besides, I could do with a tiny little break before we carry on, my calves are screaming.” And Fondates was always nice enough for a small break and something to shove down her throat. “My treat this time, you paid last time!”

Velina laughed then, giving Gigi’s arm a squeeze as they walked along. “You can say ‘bitch’ you know, but yes. Let’s get you some caffeine before you turn into a tiny rage monster.”

She knew a thing or two about consuming anger. Granted, she’d learned how to control it over her many years, but it still got the better of her every now and then. The last time was still fresh on her mind, and she instinctively rubbed her shoulder as if to work out a muscle. Silently, she figured that she wouldn’t ever forget the night she lost her wings.

Rolling her eyes, her hand left her shoulder and waved indifferently. “Fine. You can pay this time, but I demand a photo op.” Fondante’s was a good location for Instagram content, or at least it was for a few posts. She couldn’t very well become predictable.

“I was thinking more along the line of see-you-next-Tuesday, but sure, we’ll go with bitch.” It wasn’t like Gigi shied away from being bitchy after all.

Although Fondante’s was popular, it seemed like there was always just one seat left, like there was just some magical thing that meant you got the last decent place to sit. Thankfully, they weren’t laden down with too many bags and slotting into the space without disturbing anyone.

“The usual? Want something to nibble on for your photo op?” Having a regular order wasn’t that far out of the way, and Gigi made a point of remembering her friends’ preferred orders. She knew Vee’s and she knew Cassidy’s, even if she gave him shit, she still knew what he liked to drink. “I’m totally getting today’s special donut, because screw carbs.”

For a second Gigi thought she actually spotted Cas, her posture changing just a little in surprise before she noticed it was just someone who looked like him. Duh, he was probably working. Gigi quickly turned her attention back to Vee, checking to see if she’d missed something Vee had said.

“Oh, I think I prefer see-you-next-Tuesday over ‘bitch’.”

Sliding into her seat gracefully, Vee placed her bags carefully at her feet before flashing her best friend a camera-ready smile. “You get me, G. The usual with one of those pretty danishes. Preferably, cherry for aesthetic purposes.” It took her a moment to realize Genesis was briefly distracted and only a moment more for her to follow the other girl’s line of eyesight to the boy.

Velina simply smirked for a moment, before propping herself up on her elbows and wiggling her eyebrows. “Someone, you know?”

“Um, no. It’s not. Be right back!” Gen half hoped that Vee would forget about it by the time she was back from the counter, placing their coffee orders and getting a cherry danish and a strawberry one for herself. There was a guy at the counter shooting her a look, then grinning over towards Vee, drawing Gigi’s attention over to her friend. “Oh buddy, she’s way out of your league.”

Gigi wasn’t even pretending he had a shot with Vee.

With their goods in arm, Gigi returned to the table, “Don’t look now, but you have an admirer who could really use a touch up on the grooming.” It was probably the norm for people to want to approach Vee, but god, Gigi would have a hard time not cutting them down just from their appearance.

Uh-huh,” Vee said pointedly as Gigi got up from the table. Immediately producing her phone from her purse, she began mindlessly scrolling through her notifications as she awaited her coffee and danish that she probably wouldn’t eat much of. Her influx of new followers was going through a bit of a slow period, so she needed to get her hands on some eye-catching content- especially if she wanted to throw that party to end all parties once she reached the one million mark.

“What?” Snapping out of her screen induced daze, she finally registered what her friend was saying and allowed her eyes to travel over to the guy in question. If she had been hungry at all he may have gotten a chance, but as it stood? “Aw, how cute. He’s got big dreams.”

That didn’t stop her from turning on those hypnotic eyes, however. It couldn’t hurt to have a potential back-up if her regulars decided they weren’t down for fun. Velina had learned the hard way that it was better to be safe than sorry, and holding his gaze was far too easy given the fact that he was already interested. Gotcha.

Then it was over as quickly as it began- with a roll of her eyes back toward her friend. Flashing her a grin, Vee began to arrange the food and coffee on the table; producing some photo props from her bag in the form of faux rose petals.

“Now, Sweets. Tell me who it was that caught your attention before you scrambled off to the counter.”

There might’ve been a time when Gigi was a little insecure about how professional and talented Vee was with her social media, but given how solid their friendship was, it didn’t really have the same kind of affect on her. Velina was basically an online personality, and Gigi knew how hard Vee worked to cultivate that.

“No one, honestly.” Which wasn’t a lie, because she didn’t know the person she’d seen. Gigi took one of the wooden, biodegradable knives that she’d picked up and cut her pastry up so that she wasn’t getting sticky syrup all over herself. “He looked like a classmate.”

Cassidy wasn’t exactly a ‘classmate’, but ‘colleague’ wasn’t entirely right either. They were both on the track to becoming full members of the Men of Letters, but there were still a few matters to work on there too. “But I was just seeing things, so it’s fine.” She was probably being too evasive though.

Holding her phone over the little scene she created, Velina took a series of shots from different angles, all the while listening to Genesis as she spoke. Once she was confident she took at least one she could work with, she discarded the phone and carefully removed the petals. “That was a hell of a reaction to someone who you thought was just a ‘classmate’.”

Vee wasn’t exactly the type of person to just let something go. Like a dog with a bone, she was typically relentless- poking and prodding until she got an answer that satisfied her. In this instance, though? She wouldn’t push the other girl too much if she didn’t want to elaborate. Slowly but surely she was starting to learn how to be a decent friend.

And a great deal of that unexpected character growth she owed to the redhead sitting across from her.

“But if you want to keep driving the bus to vague town? I’ll hop on too.”

It wasn’t really like it was a big deal, and Genesis wasn’t exactly unaware that Vee could likely read her well enough to know that something was going on. “He really does just look like a classmate, it just so happens that he’s a classmate that I like, okay?”

Her relationship with Cassidy wasn’t entirely antagonistic, and while they did butt heads it was usually in a light and teasing manner. A competitive edge on their learnings and things like that. She poked at him, he took the bait, they had a little spat. It was probably the equivalent of pulling pigtails.

But Gigi was also rather aware that it was just teasing.

“It’s not really that big a deal, we’re just friends.”

Ah. There it was and she didn’t even have to poke...much. “I believe you, Cupcake.” Grinning, she finally lifted her coffee up to her lips to take a sip. “Tell me about the friend?”

Boys were definitely a topic Velina could throw her entire attention into. The list of conversations she didn’t grow bored of quickly was very short. At the top was herself, of course, but boys came in at a close second.

“Well,” Gen had to be a little cautious on just what she said about Cassidy -it wasn’t that she worried it would get back to him, Vee wouldn’t do something like that, but at the same time, her comments could be a little in the vein of mean. “He’s a nerd,” like that, “but not in the weird creepy way, you know?” Which she knew the Vee probably was wildly aware of.

“We have similar interests, you know being in the same classes and things. Um, he’s good to argue, like, opinions and points with cause he doesn’t just dismiss that I wouldn’t know things cause I’m a girl,” which happened enough, honestly, the opinion that she wasn’t smart enough or didn’t really understand things. Cassidy sometimes showed surprise that she was interested in certain things, but never talked down at her.

“And he’s probably what some people would call cute, I guess. In a way.” He was cute, with his stupid floppy hair and dimples. But still. Not the point. And Gigi promptly shoved some danish in her mouth to stop herself talking more.

Velina tried desperately not to pull a face at the word ‘nerd’ and mostly succeeded. All that crossed her features was a slight wrinkle of her nose. It helped when she went on to explain he wasn’t that kind of nerd. So, this guy was like Gigi in a way? Into the same things that Vee didn’t necessarily grasp the appeal of, but to each their own she supposed.

“Arguing can be hot,” she replied with another smirk and wiggle of her eyebrows. Then Genesis was shutting herself up via danish and she couldn’t help but laugh. She briefly wondered what it must be like to ramble on about someone the way Gigi was. Vee had come close once, and it turned out to be the biggest mistake she would ever make. Oh well. It wasn’t like Trey was in a position to share that story. Dead men tell no tales.

“You should tell him you think he’s cute.”

“Um, no.” Genesis might not always get a read on people, but she could take a guess, and frankly there’d been no indication that Cassidy saw her as anything other than a friend -if he’d ever flirted with her, she’d missed it entirely, and she wasn’t that dense. “We kind of work together sometimes, for projects? So I’d rather not make it the most awkward thing I’ve lived through since high school.”

It wasn’t like she was a lovestruck kid either, she liked him, sure, but it wasn’t like she was doodling their names together in her notebooks. It was a crush and she’d deal with it without being an idiot.

“Besides, I’m not really looking to date anyone or anything so what’s the point?”

Oh. So that’s where Gigi’s head was in all of this. Vee couldn’t help the proud smile that tugged at the corner of her lips as the other girl continued to speak. She didn’t know shit about relationships, but she did know that they were pointless. If you were going to entertain the notion? It was better to just take what you wanted and leave without a single glance in the rearview mirror.

“There’s my smart girl. Dating is overrated,” Velina cooed- taking another sip of her coffee. “Men are good for a few things and mostly know how to scratch a good itch, but ultimately? They never fail to disappoint.”

“Isn’t that most people in general?” Gigi was pretty sure that half the time, people would let you down. There were a handful of people who weren’t family that hadn’t just abandoned her when things got tough, Vee was on that short list, even though things hadn’t really gotten terribly tough since she’d known her, Gigi couldn’t imagine Vee just dumping her as a friend because things weren’t simple.

She hadn’t had an episode in a while, long enough for her to think maybe she was getting a grip on things.

But even that was probably just a phase, and a boyfriend (or whatever) would probably complicate matters anyway. “But yeah, I’m still young, I should just have fun with my life, cute boys or not. I have time to play the field.”

“Absolutely,” Vee said with an agreeing scoff. In over a century, she could count on one hand how many people hadn’t disappointed her. Hell, she wouldn’t even have to use all five beautifully manicured fingers. This was why she never let anyone close. She couldn’t be disappointed if there wasn’t anything substantial there, to begin with.

Typically, Velina didn’t fuck with exceptions. Her rules were there for a reason, but Gigi slipped through the cracks of those impenetrable walls.

“You have all the time in the world, Sweets. Have as much fun as you can handle. Have more fun than you can handle, and never settle.”

“Are you giving me a motivating speech here or practising for your TED Talk?” Gigi teased, even though she knew the sentiment behind the comments.

It wasn’t that she wanted to take risks or anything like that, she wanted to enjoy herself, and part of that was in a romantic aspect too. Getting to know Vee, embracing her own sexuality, it had helped her figure out that she’d always been skittish about that while at home. And she didn’t need to be. Her moms had been nothing but supportive her entire life, telling her that whatever she chose, whoever she was, they loved her regardless.

Gigi just needed to work out who that was.

“Besides, I know that if someone does hurt me, I’ll have help hiding the body.”

“Definite TED Talk practice,” Vee quipped back with another one of those trademarks smirks. She really did mean what she said. Gigi was too young to even consider settling. Hell, Velina was 121 and was too young- not that she ever intended on settling with anyone.

Genesis wasn’t the same girl she was when they met, and even though she had adored that girl? It was quite an experience to watch her come into her own. She wasn’t proud of many things outside of her own accomplishments, but she was incredibly proud of Genesis. It was an odd feeling but one she embraced all the same.

“Oh, honey. If someone hurts you? There won’t be a body left to bury.”
