The only thing that Rob Liefeld "owns" is artistic failure.

Yeah sorry, Rob is cool and created Deadpool which means he's okay in my book.

He "created" Deadpool in no way that really counts. He ripped off Spider-Man and Snake-Eyes (for the look), and Deathstroke the Terminator (for everything else), and then guys with actual talent fleshed out the lack of character Liefeld gave him and turned him into someone the fans embraced.

Whatevs, the man is hated up and down the internet but is still chill enough to not be a bitch about it or whine.

A great Liefeld moment is when someone at the somethingawful forums went to ComicCon where Liefeld was signing and asked him to draw him a pouch. Liefeld did it, he knows he's hated by like 90% of Internet comic fans but he's still gracious to fans and he didn't lose his temper when someone insulted him to his face at a Con.

Dude is okay in my book

He also complained when one of his characters was written as gay.

Maybe he didn't like the direction for reasons other than homophobia?

I don't know.

I just think it's cool that a guy essentially embodies an entire decade of comics, for better or worse, that's pretty cool.

To be fair, I also thought Onslaught was really cool when I was a kid so eh

Except that he embodies everything about that decade that made me want to QUIT comics, which is NOT cool with me.

"Zeitgeist" itself is not an inherently good thing, if only because there are several eras of history, in various categories, that are themselves inherently BAD.

Except when Peter David shows Shatterstar and Rictor kissing.

Reading the wikipedia he just said he wanted Shatterstar (who I have no clue about in any way) to be asexual. It doesn't sound like he hates gays or anything.

That would be one thing, yeah, but the way Liefeld explained it was that "he was from a society where sexuality was ignored" or something and well ... it doesn't work that way.

I heard that Fabian Nicieza, who co-created him (and did more w/his character than Liefeld), was planning on having him develop a sexuality. So it's not like he was going to remain asexual forever.

You're arguing with a guy who thinks Rob Liefeld is "chill."

Of course not, because he's profiteering off of other people's work.

Oh, and you might want to look up his feud with Kurt Busiek for an example of him "bitching" online, in that case specifically because Busiek was one of COUNTLESS people who was LIED to by Rob in their business dealings, and the fact that Busiek even MENTIONS this is huge, because Kurt is the most drama-free comics creator EVER.

Bottom line: Liefeld lies to fellow creators and fans alike, tells terrible stories and produces equally terrible art, and is sitting on a mint of money.

I do recall hearing that, yeah. Wasn't there also some drama with Liefeld and drugs? I thought I heard that somewhere, though it's probably just rumor.

I have to object there: there's no way Liefeld's stories are as terrible as his art at its most terrible.

Well, no one ever said he was a bad guy (or at least that's not usually what they say), just that he can't draw for shit. I'm sure he's a perfectly lovely man.

Seriously. Every single one of the worst stories ever told with Deadpool were all told by Rob Liefeld, who "created" him in the same sense that Bob Kane "created" batman.

You know that Bob Kane is the one who deserves credit for Batman's creation because Bob Kane is the one who was given credit for Batman's creation.

He's given the credit for Batman's creation because of a contract he signed with DC that gave him sole credit for it, along with all the bonuses that came with it. He came up with the initial concept, true, and the character design, and his artwork was a big help in establishing the overall look and feel of the character, but most of the really important stuff - a number of the villains, the detective aspect, the origin, etc. - can be attributed to Bill Finger, the initial writer and co-creator. Bob Kane certainly had talent as an artist, and he deserves his share of credit, but overall, the guy's always struck me as a bit of an egotistical glory-hog.

I was trying to mock Kane's own circular demonstration of why he's Batman's creator as I remembered it. I guess I failed.

I'm not sure that that's a fair comparison. The fact that Kane is touted as the sole creator of Batman is monstrously unfair, I admit, but credit where credit is due, the guy WAS a good artist, and without his artwork and character designs, Batman would likely have been a very different character. Liefeld, on the other hand, is NOT a good artist, and pretty much created Deadpool as just another throwaway character - he had nowhere near the same effect on Deadpool that Kane had on Batman.

Except that, while Kane was a vastly better artist, pretty much all of the ideas that made it into the final draft of Batman's character came from Finger, and all of the ideas that got thrown out came from Kane.
