[...] Alright. If you're sure.

Ah. [...] No, it wasn't a bad pause. I haven't [blink, blink] changed my mind. Have you? [Pause.] Either. I don't know if I'm ready for the cowl yet.

I'm trying to remember that, that I belong here as much as anyone. [...] He said that? [...] Maybe. If he talks to me. I should have seen him sooner. [...] Yes, but so am I. Everyone is.

He just didn't take you well.

No. I haven't changed my mind. [...] I'm near Robinson Park these days. A visit, I think. And, yes, that's an invitation. No cowl required.

Some would say you belong here more than most, but let's not let things go to your head. [...] He did. He thinks he's responsible for fixing Jason. He's staying on the Manor grounds, in the cottage near the edge of the property - Damian. [...] Alright. That's a fair point.

[...] Will you be staying at the Manor?

[...] Ah.

I think I'll try life without the cowl for a while. [...] I'll come.

No, we can't have that. [...] Why does he think that? None of us are responsible for fixing Jason. We're his family, yes, but helping him isn't an obligation.

[Cursor blink.] I don't know. It would make sense. I have warehouses, I could sleep there. Alfred isn't here to lecture me.

Damian thinks everything is his job, Bruce. He hasn't handled being back very well, as far as I can tell.

You're not sleeping in a warehouse. I'd offer, but somehow I doubt you want to slum it in a efficiency? I put all my money into the shelter on the East End. I need to rebuild my nest egg.

[Cursor.] Do you have things you need to do first? Before coming, I mean.

[Sigh.] I know. I should have gone back to see him sooner.

[Cursor bliiiiink.] I don't want to [...] intrude. Or cross any boundaries.

I should stop by work, let them know I'm back. Taking a break from the cowl means that I'll have more time to focus on whatever it is CEOs are supposed to do. But that shouldn't take long.

Bruce, don't be an idiot. I'm in the old industrial across from Robinson. Stay as long as you want. I wouldn't mind the company for a little while either. Being back hasn't been easy, and it's only been a few days.

There's a very nice couch. No expectations.

I don't mind.

[Loft: Bruce/Selina]

[The industrial building was, literally, across from Robinson Park. Four stories, and each one had been converted to a large loft and, by Gotham standards, it wasn't too bad. Crowded, messy, old and no paint on the walls, but most of the windows were intact. It had stuff in it from three places - the Marvel penthouse, the East End apartment, and the little she'd salvaged a year earlier from the Gotham penthouse. Furniture was thrift-store pick-ups, all hauled in by Jason's boys, who she'd been feeding since she walked back through the door.

The door? Oh, that was very locked.]

[The building was his second stop. Before the Manor, which he felt he needed another night's sleep (or just another night, whether he slept or not) to visit. Second, because Wayne Enterprises was first, to announce his 'return' from a business trip abroad and, subsequently, his return as CEO of the company. This time, thing a would be different. He'd run the company as his father would have wanted; more priority on what would benefit Gotham and its citizens, less importance on the love of money. A challenge, perhaps, but an easier one than facing a family who resented him or taking up the mantle of Batman again.

It felt strange, though, not to sneak in a window while wearing the suit. Instead he stood outside the door in modern-day appropriate clothing, and he had to steel himself to knock.] Selina? [He paused.] It's Bruce.

[The locks were old and numerous, and she'd been sitting in a chair reading, a tumbler of bourbon on the long window's ledge. It wasn't that she didn't trust Gotham but, well, she didn't trust Gotham.

Dressed in black leggings and a grey tunic, hair loose and wavy, still too thin and she wasn't exactly shiny black and cat's ears as she opened the door. She smiled when she saw him, familiar and lush, and she tugged the door wide and motioned in past the messy kitchen and to the space beyond. Honestly? She wasn't sure he'd be able to live with this mess; it wasn't exactly Wayne Manor. But she was fond of it, oddly enough, after a year of much better places.]

[A sway of hips as she moved away from the door.] Want a drink? [Nervous? Her? Never.]

[He stood there for a moment when the door opened, a glimmer of uncertainty visible before he returned her smile with one of his own and it was gone. Vanished, beneath the grey suit he wore that hung a little too loosely on his frame, tie askew, hair just a touch too long (he hadn't had a chance to get it cut yet) and he hadn't done the best job at shaving either. But after weeks spent with zombies he thought he was owed a little leeway, a chance to readjust to the real world-- and to Gotham, too.

When she motioned past herself he stepped inside, gaze curious as he looked around. Messy was a word for it, nothing like the echoing halls of Wayne Manor or the opulence of Wayne Towers, but he thought a chance from both might be nice. And it was better than a warehouse, which would have been his eventual choice.] Alright. [A drink couldn't hurt, he supposed.] Thank you again, for... letting me stay.

[She waited until she was past the beams of the kitchen, walls never completed anywhere in the loft and beams and curtains serving in place of walls and doors, to look him over. And then she poured him a tumbler of the bourbon, glasses beneath the end table and a long stretch of arm as she held out the glass half-filled with amber.]

You don't need to thank me. [It was said when he came close enough to take the glass, and she reached for her own and finished the fingerful that was left in the bottom before refilling.] I'm glad you're here. You can stay as long as you need to. [She smiled, fingers to his jaw where he was sloppy with a razor, and it was good she had some booze in her; she wouldn't have risked that touch otherwise.] Did you go by the office? [She motioned with her glass to the suit he wore.]

Maybe not, but it's habit. [Said wryly, because he could acknowledge his own stubbornness. Change was slow in coming but he tried, most of the time. He accepted the glass of amber and took a sip, relishing the taste as he swallowed, but her admission that she was glad he was here caught his attention. It would take time, he knew, to accustom himself to the fact that some people did want to be in his presence. What he believed of himself and what was true were often entirely different, and he knew that was something he had to work on.

He didn't mind the touch to his jaw, not in the slightest.] Be careful. You might never be able to get rid of me. [He nodded when she asked if he'd been by the office, and took another sip.] I think they stopped taking me seriously a while ago, but that's fine. I can change their minds.

Some habits need to be broken. [She took another sip of the smooth bourbon, and she set it aside before it went to her head. She was still running low on sleep and decent food, and buzzes came quick these days.] How about if I rephrase? [Asked when he said she might not be able to get rid of him.] Stay as long as you want. [Want, in place of need, and she understood that Wayne Manor had stopped being his, to a certain view, a long time ago.] But you're making coffee in the mornings.

Do you want to go back there? [It was honest and curious, that question about the company. They didn't normally talk about things that didn't have to do with capes or cowls, and she realized she had no idea whatsoever.

She shook her head.] No, don't answer that. You don't need to answer that. Rest first. [She'd promised no expectations, after all. Prying, she was fairly sure, counted. She motioned to the couch, blankets and pillows there, and to the curtained bathroom way in the back of the loft. And while she wanted to close the gap, to kiss him, she didn't. No expectations, remember?] Make yourself at home, Bruce.

I'm learning that. Slowly. [The bourbon was warm, and though it only served to make him feel sleepy, limbs heavy and tired, he downed the rest in one deep gulp. It burned along his throat but, just this once, he liked it. He blinked at her when she rephrased, working out the difference between want and need in his head.] If you think that's going to get rid of me quicker, you might be mistaken. [He managed a smile, an attempt at the humor he so very often failed at, and he shook his head when she said that he was making coffee in the mornings.] A small price to pay, I suppose.

[It was a loaded question, whether or not he wanted to go back; it was a broad one, too, even if she was only referring to the company. Bruce had begun to answer when she shook her head, and he thought about pushing before he relented and sighed.] Alright. I'll get back to you on that. [He was tired, and he considered the bathroom before he realized he really just wanted some rest. He was clean, and shaving and hair-cutting could wait. He tugged off his tie, shrugged off his jacket, and hesitated. He felt like he should do something, say something, and he made an aborted move forward before clearing his throat.] Thank you. I'll just... [He gestured to the couch.]

[She merely smiled an enigmatic smile when he asked if she thought that would get rid of him sooner, lush lips hiding insecurity and, hopefully, the fact that she'd meant just the opposite. And she didn't push about the company or push for that kiss, though her gaze did drop to his mouth for a fraction too long. And any intention for further conversation was lost in that tug of his tie. Right. Sleep. Seeing as she was pretty sure, hey, we have sex once a year, and we're a little overdue for 2014, would be stunningly rejected. And that aborted move forward just made her turn toward the bed and douse the lights, so he didn't think she expected anything of him. If she tossed and turned for too long? She'd just sneak out and find something to steal. She was, after all, very stealthy.]

Goodnight, Mr. Wayne.

[Bruce had good instincts. Better than average, one might say. On good days it was very difficult, if not impossible, to sneak up on him, and he hadn't survived this long on slow reflexes. He was fast. One step ahead, but that was when he was a fight or up against an enemy, an opponent, not when he was in a woman's apartment. A woman who, until recently, he hadn't exactly been on speaking terms with due to his own stupidity, a woman with whom he stood on the uncertain ground of trying with. He felt as he often did, like he'd made some mistake or misstep somewhere without being able to pinpoint it. Always after, and never before. He needed to get better at this.]

Goodnight, Ms. Kyle. [He stood in the dampened lights, trying to puzzle it out, but he was tired and that certainly didn't help matters. After a few seconds of standing there like a fool, during which he realized he'd missed whatever opportunity he'd had to do something, he turned slowly and stretched out on the couch. Warmth and blankets, and he'd make up for it in the morning. Yes.]
