Awkwardness, anyone?
WHO: Jason & Kate
WHAT: Kate's shadowing him at work.
WHERE: Gunter Studios.
WHEN: ALL DAY. Lmfao.
RATING: Who knows? TBD.
OPEN? To [info]stillnotkatie only.

To say that Jason was a little nervous and apprehensive about Kate shadowing him at work would be a complete understatement. While he did want to see her again and spend some time with her, he knew that things couldn't be like they had been before. They weren't together anymore, they weren't dating. He had a girlfriend, she had a boyfriend. They were only going to be friends, and that was really for the best. Though Jason had never really completely gotten over Kate, he knew that they could really be no more than friends. Things couldn't miraculously return to the way they had been when he had said goodbye to her when she left to come here. He couldn't hold open his arms and let her run into them and hug and kiss her, no matter how much he thought about it. And then, after thinking about it, he always felt incredibly guilty.

Pushing all those thoughts out of his head, Jason focused on the task at hand. He was sitting at his desk about ten minutes before Kate was scheduled to show up, and he couldn't exactly concentrate on the things he was supposed to do today. He had saved some developing for a project for when she showed up, to give her something to do. He figured that, since she was a photography student now, she knew how to develop without his help. Which just made him smile, of course. He couldn't get over the sense of pride and the little bit of nostalgia he felt whenever he thought about Kate going into photography. However small of a part he played in that decision, he still played a part in a huge decision in her life. It touched him, really. And then he ended up feeling guilty again. 'Hey, Jason! There's a Kathleen Shore here to see you? She says that she's supposed to be career shadowing you.' Jason looked up at the sound of his co-worker's voice, and he nodded. "Yeah, send her on back, please," he said, reaching a hand up to run through his hair. He needed to get his head together, and fast.

Kate only had morning classes today at school, so she took advantage of having the afternoon off to get some of her hours that she needed to get done for job shadowing out of the way. Normally Kate wouldn’t be nervous about doing something like that, when it came to photography she felt extremely confident, but the fact that she would be job shadowing Jason her ex boyfriend made her pretty nervous. Things seemed to be all right between the two of them, they were not fighting like they had when they first met up and had been talking a lot on the phone, more then Kate would readily admit to anyone, but they had not had the chance to really spend some time together yet. Kate knew that all that they could be was friends, Jason had a girlfriend and Kate was seeing Jamie who was someone that she really cared about, but that still didn’t stop her from thinking about what it was like when the two of them were together. Things were definitely going to be way different now, friendship was all that they could have. Though, Jason had become one of Kate’s best friends when they were dating, so it would be easy to find that friendship between them again without making things uncomfortable. Right? Well, that was what Kate kept telling herself.

Her morning classes went by quite quickly and Kate headed back to her room to changed and put down her book bags before she drove over to the studio that Jason worked at. While Kate was in her room she pulled her hair out of its pony tail, suddenly deciding that she wanted to wear it down and quickly put on the make up that she was too lazy to put on in the morning before she went to her classes. Actually when Kate thought about it she had been too lazy to put on make up for a few weeks. Weird. Once everything was ready and settled Kate took a deep breath and then headed to her car, suddenly getting knots in her stomach. Why on earth did she decide that having her ex boyfriend be the person she job shadow for school was a good idea? Kate had no idea, but she was pretty sure she must have been intoxicated at some point when she made that decision because now that she thought about it, as much as she wanted to see Jason again, it was starting to feel like it wasn’t such a great idea.

It didn’t take long for Kate to make it to the studio since she was driving now, thank god. She parked her car in the parking lot and headed into the studio, running her hand through her not so long hair before entering. Kate didn’t see Jason right away, but she assumed that he was in the back or something and decided just to tell the person who was at the front who she was and what she was there for. They directed Kate to the back like she guessed and headed in that direction, trying to mentally prepare herself for seeing Jason again while she did it. “Hey there Mr. Photographer man,” Kate said with a smile when she saw him sitting at his desk. Just seeing Jason working at an actual studio in person put a smile on Kate’s face because she knew that while working with him on the island that was something that he had always wanted to do.

Once Jason knew Kate was there, he started to take a few deep breaths to get himself relaxed again. Everything would be fine, there was no reason to panic. He and Kate were friends, they talked on the phone all the time now. It would all be a-okay. Glancing back down at the work on his desk, Jason started to try and straighten some of it up. It kind of looked like a huge mess, everything was all over the place. At one point, his desk had been neat and tidy. And he promised himself that soon, it would look like that again. At least he hoped it would, anyway. It had been on his to-do list for weeks, and it was easy to tell how far the to-do list had gotten him.

Hearing footstep behind him, Jason couldn’t help the smile that crossed his face. He turned as he heard her voice addressing him, and he looked up at her giving her a smile and letting out a little chuckle at her greeting. “Well, hey right back atcha, Miss Photography student,” he said, turning his chair and folding his hands together, resting them on his stomach as he leaned back in his chair, turning to glance up at her. “You find the place okay?” he asked, moving to push himself out of the chair and stand. Glancing around the office, he scratched the side of his head and then nodded. He spotted an empty chair over by one of his co-workers desks, and he snatched it before they came back.

Wheeling the chair back over to his desk, he gestured for Kate to have a seat. While she was sitting down, Jason let himself study her. She really did look fantastic. It had only been a year since he’d seen her, well … a few days, but before that it had been a year. Her hair was still long and gorgeous, and it still had that natural curl to it that Jason loved so much. When he saw her those few days ago, he hadn’t taken the time to study her, and now it was all he really wanted to do. Shaking himself out of it before she caught him, Jason gave her a smile. “It’s good to see you,” he told her honestly, before forcing himself to turn and look at his desk and computer.

Kate immediately felt a nervous jolt in her stomach when she saw Jason, but she did her best to try and ignore it. She had no reason to be nervous, Jason was her friend. Well, considering they constantly talked on the phone Kate liked to think that her and Jason had fallen back to being good friends. She told him about school, her parents and friends and everything that was going on in her life. She guessed that she felt nervous because she didn’t want to make an ass out of herself in front of Jason when it came to photography, though deep down she knew that wasn’t even close to the real reason why she felt the way she did. “Yeah, piece of cake,” Kate said with a grin. She was actually quite proud that she didn’t get lost because even though she had been at providence for about a year she still didn’t know her way around that well since she spent about ninety percent of her time on campus.

Once the seat was wheeled back to Jason’s desk Kate took a seat and ran a hand through her hair again. She did her best not to look at Jason too much, because she knew that if she started checking him over she wasn’t sure she could do it without him knowing that she was staring. He looked good, she spotted that out the first time she saw him and immediately felt a little guilty that she was noticing that about her ex boyfriend. She wanted to tell him how good she thought he looked, but she knew it would be a little inappropriate for her to say right now. “It is really good to see you too, Jason,” Kate said back and truthfully. It was nice to be in a room with Jason again and not be yelling at him.

Kate leaned back a bit in her chair and she couldn’t help but watch Jason as he worked on his computer. She crossed her legs casually and resting both of her elbows on the chair arm rests, trying to look around the room so that her eyes were not constantly on Jason. “Thanks for doing this for me,” Kate said quietly. She was sure that she could find someone else to job shadow, but it did make things so much easier when she knew the person, very well in this case, and Kate knew that Jason and her worked well together. “When I have done all of my hours I will just need you to fill out some form saying that I actually worked and stuff and am not bullshitting my professor,” Kate then added. “Though, I think I have to do so many hours throughout the semester,”

Jason really loved talking to Kate on the phone as much as they did. It was nice to hear about her friends and her family, and now that she was so far away from said family, Jason wasn't as terrified of her father anymore. Well, that and the fact that they weren't dating anymore. Part of Jason still found that information to be painful, but for the most part he tried not to think about it. He didn't want to feel the pain that came with that information, especially because with that pain came intense jealousy of Kate's new boyfriend, and then guilt because of Nic. He hated still having the feelings for Kate, because he felt like such an asshole. Nodding when Kate told him that she had found the studio okay, he smiled at her. "Good. It would have looked bad if you got lost," he teased, giving her a wink before turning back to his computer screen.

Kate running her hand through her hair just caused the scent of her shampoo to be stirred into the air and, of course, towards his nose. He swallowed and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath before letting it out slowly. He had always loved the way her hair smelled, that was definitely one of his weaknesses. By far. Glancing back at her as she told him it was good to see him too, Jason smiled. "It's nice to see you, and actually have civil conversation at the same time," he teased, referring back to the first time they had seen each other, back at her photo shoot, where all they had done was just yell at each other. All Jason wanted to do was just pull her closer to him and hug her tightly, but he knew it wasn't something that could be done.

Turning to face her again, Jason shook his head as she thanked him. "Oh, don't worry about it," he said, giving her a smile. Jason was grateful that she asked him to shadow, because it gave him the opportunity to be with her again. Well, to spend time with her again. He missed her so much, and he knew that spending this kind of time with her wasn't exactly the best idea in the world, not when he was havin all these insane feelings, but he really couldn't help it. Listening as she talked about what she'd need, Jason nodded. "That's not a problem. I can fill out and sign any forms that you need me to," he told her, nodding his head. He couldn't help but be excited at the prospect of spending time with her throughout the entire semester, but he just nodded again. "That's fine ... there's always work to be done here, so I'm sure they won't mind the extra set of hands," he smiled. "Since you're studying the field, I'm sure you're going to try to get into it, so you can use this as kind of an internship, if you want. I don't think the owners would have a problem with that," he shook his head.

Kate smirked at Jason’s teasing, glad that he still had that in him. Jason used to constantly tease Kate before, it was something that they always did to each other and something that she certainly missed once they separated. There was so many things about Jason that Kate missed while he was gone, but she knew that there were only a few things that she missed that she would be able to get back. At least she knew that the teases would be one of them. “You know how I am with directions,” Kate said with a smile. She was never that great with them, and Jason knew that from the past. Whenever Kate got lost or was trying to find a place she was the type of person who got extremely stubborn and refuse to ask for directions unless it was a major last resort. Kate didn’t know why she did that, changing her attitude would of saved her a lot of time in the long run.

“Hopefully it will stay that way,” Kate said with a grin. She knew that if things went well between Jason and Kate then they wouldn’t be yelling at each other any time soon. The two of them rarely fought, and when they did it was usually over something really stupid or pointless, and when they were together it nearly always ended with make up sex. Kate and Jason obviously couldn’t do that now, so she was just going to have to work towards having a fight free new friendship with Jason.

The thought of being able to do some sort of internship at the same studio as Jason put a smile on Kate’s face. “That would be so unbelievably awesome,“ Kate told Jason. In a way she really couldn’t believe that Jason was so willing to do that for her. Yes, they had been very close before and both of them knew that they could rely on each other for anything, but that was a year ago. After Kate broke up with Jason the two of them didn’t speak for a year, so Jason really had no reason for doing all of this. Kate definitely appreciated it and was glad that he was doing it, and it all just reminded her of how great of a person Jason really was. OK. Kate needed to get busy doing work because she found that her eyes kept on straying on Jason as he sat on the computer, and her thoughts starting going through things that Kate really didn’t need to think about. “So! What work do you have for me?” Kate asked, showing how eager she was to get to business.

Jason snickered at Kate's comment about her sense of direction, and he covered his mouth for a moment. "Yeah ... you were never any good with them. But, you'd insist that you knew where you were going, and for some reason, my dumb ass kept believing you," he said, shaking his head and laughing quietly. "And then, when you'd get us completely lost, turned around backwards, you'd refuse to ask anyone to help us," he smiled, proving to her that he remembered exactly how Kate was with directions. "It used to piss me off, but make me laugh at the same time," he told her, writing down some notes on a pad of paper. Notes of things he had to get done, that Kate would be able to help him with.

Nodding, Jason smiled. "Yeah, it would make working together here pretty difficult if all we did was yell at each other," he told her, giving her a big smile, then shrugging. "Besides, you and I were never really able to stay mad at each other," he said quietly, turning his attention back to the computer. That had slipped out before he could stop it, and he just figured 'oh well'. He was sure that there was a lot about their past that would slip out if the two of them hung out together. It was just a given, it was the way things worked.

The smile that the internship put on Kate's face made everything completely worth it. Jason's own smile grew a little, and he had to bite his tongue to keep himself from saying something about her smile. It hadn't dimmed at all, and it still had the same effect on him. It still made him want to do anything he could to keep it on her face. He caught himself staring at her smile longer than he should have, and he cleared his throat to cover his tracks. "What work do I have for you?" Jason repeated Kate's question, and then pushed his chair out, turning to face her and leaning back into it, crossing his hands over his stomach. "Well, there's some developing that needs to be done. And then I have some prints to make. They won't be big, just the small proofs to show to a client, and then the client will choose which she wants made into actual prints," he explained, reaching a hand up to run through his always unruly hair. "Sound good?" he asked.

Kate couldn’t help but laugh a bit as Jason brought back the memory of his first hand account with her and how bad she was with directions. What he said was exactly true, Kate couldn’t deny it but she never did anything about it either. She was stubborn like that and probably would never change no matter what. “I remember that, I think it took us like over half an hour to get to the place we wanted when it normally only took like ten minutes,” Kate said to Jason with a smile. “I was so surprised that you let me drag you around for that long, if I were you I would of strangled me in about the first ten minutes,” Kate then added with another laugh. Kate and Jason had a lot of memories together and she knew for a fact that the two of them would be going through tons of them by the end of the day.

The next thing that Jason said caught Kate by surprise a bit, only in the manner that he said it, and she wasn’t sure how to respond to that. She knew that it was true, her and Jason could never stay that angry with each other, and that still held up to this day. When they first ran into each other they were yelling at each other constantly, but not long after that did they find out each other’s cell phone numbers and were calling each other constantly. “Yeah, we never could stay angry with each other,” Kate commented quietly, but that didn’t stop her from giving Jason a smile as she said it. She knew it was a comment that was slipped out, but really she didn’t mind it that much.

Kate sat up straighter in her chair as Jason leaned back in his as she consciously remembered about her posture and how bad it was. Kate slouched all of the time and recently decided to try and sit up straighter to try and help out her back. Kate couldn’t afford to be getting a really sore back from something that she could of just avoided in the first place by not being so lazy. “Yeah, that sounds great,” Kate said with a nod, but she bit her lip when she thought about developing film and the dark room. Kate and Jason certainly had a lot of history when they were together in the dark room, and she already knew that things would be a little weird if the two of them were together in one again. Though, Kate tried to stay positive and push those thoughts out of her head. She had to be professional about this and not let things get weird.

Jason laughed and nodded. "Yeah, it did take way too long. And I still have no idea why I let you drag me around that long. If you would have asked someone, we would have been there so much sooner," he remembered, shaking his head. "Oh well. That's in the past, though it's nice to hear that you haven't gotten any better at it," he smiled. Glancing over at her as she repeated his statement about not being able to stay mad at each other for very long, Jason nodded. He glanced away and cleared his throat, looking at one of his co-workers. His co-worker was making kissy faces at him and Kate, and Jason rolled his eyes. That was the last time he confided in that friend about anything. Glaring at his friend, he slowly returned his gaze back to Kate, giving her a small smile.

Nodding as she agreed that the developing and making proofs sounded good, Jason stood and glanced around his desk for a minute before his eyes landed on the few rolls of film he had to develop. Reaching out, he grabbed them and then glanced over at Kate. "Okay, let's get started," he smiled. "Follow me, the dark room is back here," he told her, making his way through the studio. Jason was really kind of apprehensive to have the two of them both in the dark room, alone, at the same time, but there was nothing he could do about it. Nobody else had any work to do in the dark room, and he had to do something with Kate for her shadowing. He would just have to concentrate completely on his work, and try to forget who it was in there with him.

Reaching the dark room, Jason opened the door and then let Kate enter the small little hallway with him before he closed the door. Taking a few more steps, he opened the door that went into the actual dark room, and he cleared his throat. "Anyone in here?" he called, and he didn't hear anything. "I'm gonna turn on the lights," he warned, and still nothing. Nodding, Jason reached for the light switch and flipped it on. He turned to Kate and gave her a smile. "Okay," he said, setting the rolls of film on the table and then turning to grab the supplies he would need to develop the film. He handed Kate the circular film separator and the large black container that it went into. "Here," he smiled.

It was a good thing that Kate didn’t look over and see Jason’s co worker making kissy faces at her and Jason because she would of immediately started blushing like crazy and either walked over to the friend and given them a good smack or jumped over the desk and start kissing Jason. Neither of those options were good ones, so it was just a relief that Kate didn’t see it. Kate grinned at Jason’s comment about her not getting any better at it. “No I haven’t, and you are still as understanding about that flaw as ever,” she said. Kate herself couldn’t believe how much Jason let Kate do her own thing even though it was quite obvious that she was wrong, but that was just how Jason was.

As soon as Kate heard Jason say the word dark room a whole much of memories came back to Kate. There was a whole bunch of history between the two of them that revolved around a dark room, and Kate always found herself thinking about them whenever she was in the room, or smelling the familiar chemical smell that was associated with a dark room. Now, the thought of being alone again with Jason in a dark room worried Kate and made her a bit nervous, but she swallowed quickly and tried to get a grip on herself. It was just Jason, they were friends now and doing work together. Nothing more. “All right,” Kate said with a nod before following Jason to the back where the dark room was. Maybe someone else would be in there and then things wouldn’t feel so awkward? Probably not, but Kate liked to hope that there was still a possibility of that happening.

Kate walked into the hallway with Jason and waited for him to close the one door and open the other. He called into the room, but it was obvious that it was empty. In a way it was better that the two of them were alone, things could get crowded in there, and Kate wasn’t sure if she liked the idea of someone else listening into what her and Jason might say to each other. Not like their conversation would need to be private, but in a way she liked being able to be completely alone with him since it never happened anymore. Kate returned Jason’s smile when he turned on the lights and took a look around to how the dark room was set up. It was pretty familiar to how the one at her school was, and Kate was glad for that. It wouldn’t take her long at all to figure out where everything was. Kate took the separator and the black container and set them up on the counter so that it was easy to work with once the lights were turned off. “Remember when you first showed me how to develop film?” Kate found herself asking before she got a chance to stop herself. Going down memory lane right now probably wasn’t a good idea, but Kate couldn’t help it.

Being back in a dark room with Kate was a really strange experience. He felt like he was back on the island and that wasn't exactly a good thing. He had to remind himself that Kate had a boyfriend (that wasn't him), and he had a girlfriend. THey weren't dating anymore. End of story. It was as simple as that. They were just friends now, and that was the way that things had to be, right? Right. Jason tried to block out any memories that were trying to come to the front of his mind with the whole dark room thing, but he was failing miserably. He kept thinking about the first time Kate kissed him, when she just walked into the dark room and then kissed him, and left. The memory brought a small smile to his face, and he cleared his throat, shaking his head.

Turning to look at Kate as she set up the stuff on the counter, Jason rose a brow when she brought up the first time he showed her how to develop film, and he smiiled. "Yeah, I remember. It was the first day we met. And you scared the shit out of me by accusing me of trying to take half-naked pictures of you," he smiled at her, bumping his shoulder against hers gently. He laughed, shaking his head. "That was fun. I loved that there was someone who wanted to learn about what I did for a living, something I was so passionate about. I loved teaching you how to do everything," he told her quietly, nodding his head. The memories of all the times they'd make out in the dark room, and when Jason would get absolutely no work done were trying to surface, but he was trying like hell to keep them at bay.

Jason’s smile was infectious, Kate found that whenever he smiled at all when he was around her she would find herself grinning or even beaming back at him. Kate remembered the first day that her and Jason met, and how much fun it was. She had just arrived on the island and been there less then a month and Jason was one of the first people that she actually sat and talked to. She remembered how the two of them immediately became friends and how easy it was for Kate to be herself around him. She trusted him enough to let him lead her into a dark room that had a lock on the door and spend quite a large amount of time alone with him in there. “Yeah, I did,” Kate said with a bit of a laugh. She may of scared the shit out of Jason, but to this day Kate was still glad that she did it. If she hadn’t would the two of them ever gotten talking? Probably if the both of them stayed on the island long enough, but she didn’t know if it would of lead to them being friends and then dating. “But you totally tried to feel me up when you bumped into me,” Kate teased as she bumped Jason’s shoulder back, obviously just joking. “It was a lot of fun, and you were a great teacher,” Kate said with a grin, happy that Jason enjoyed teaching her things. He loved it, and she loved being taught by him.

Once the separator was set up and ready for the film Kate shifted to the counter and picked up one of the rolls of films that Jason had placed there. With what she learned on the island from Jason and everything from school developing film had become pretty easy for Kate and she looked forward to showing Jason all that she knew. “Ready to turn off the lights?” Kate asked, making sure to note where the light switches were for the red tinted lights. She didn’t want to be stuck in the dark and then not be able to find the red light switch, that would just make her look like an idiot. Kate then walked over to the light switch and flicked it off, then flicked on the red lights immediately. She stood still for a moment while her eyes got used to the red light, it took her a little bit longer then usual sometimes to be able to see what she was doing. Kate couldn’t help but look over at Jason and smile, the image of what his face looked like under the red lights was always something that would stay in her memory since the two of them spent so much time in the dark room together before.

Smiling, Jason shook his head and glanced over at her for a moment, his mind flooding with memories of the time he and Kate spent together. He didn't want to spend the time thinking about how things used to be between them, it would just make things even more awkward between them. The longer he thought about what used to be, the more awkward things would get. And Jason didn't want things to be incredibly awkward, not now that he had agreed to spend so much time with her, letting her doing her shadowing there. He wanted to spend the time with her, so he should just forget about the old times, and focus on their newfound friendship. Or, that was what he kept telling himself anyway. Laughing as she told him that he tried to feel her up, he rose a brow. "When? When did I bump into you, and try to feel you up?" he asked, laughing a little bit. He didn't remember that.

Nodding at Kate as she asked him about turning off the lights, Jason gave her a small smile. "Yeah, ready," he said, moving to the light switch and turning on the red light, shutting of the overhead ones. He let his eyes adjust a little bit and then moved back to the counter, getting stuff together to put the film into the separator. He got his film wound around the separator and then put the separator into the container, putting the black portion on top so that he would be able to turn the lights back on as soon as Kate finished. He wanted to keep the lights on as much as possible, becuase he could feel an electricity surge through the two of them as soon as the lights were off. Jason swallowed, reaching a hand up and brushing it through his hair as he waited for Kate to finish. "Let me know when you're done, I'll turn the lights back on," he told her.

“When we were in the dark room. You totally bumped into me and touched a boob. It was an accident, but I gave you a hard time about it because you were so damn shy. It was adorable,” Kate said before she could hold back her last comment. It was true, when Kate first met Jason he was really shy about a lot of things, but it didn’t take too long for Jason to loosen up a lot as soon as he started spending time with Kate. She had that affect on him. “I was in a bikini that entire time we hung out. Though, I sort of lived in a bikini and shorts when we worked in Mexico, didn’t I?” Kate missed being able to just walk outside in a pair of shorts that were too short for her and a bikini top or t-shirt to go with it. The hot weather on the island was awesome and something that Kate would have to visit again.

Once Kate’s eyes adjusted to the light she went to work on her own roll of film. It took her a bit longer to get her own film wound but she finished not long after Jason. It was hard for Kate to concentrate when she was in the dark with Jason, it suddenly brought back a rush of emotions and feelings that she thought was long gone, or at least hidden away deep inside of her. She wasn’t even thinking about the fact that Jason had offered to turn off the lights after she finished with her film and moved to turn on the lights herself, knowing that Jason had finished before her. She turned to reach to the light switch but she misjudged how close she was to Jason in the dark and her arm ran along Jason’s body. She suddenly took a breath in of his smell, even with the chemicals of the room and before she knew what she was doing she wrapped an arm around his body and leaned her head against his chest. Kate normally would of pulled away right away, but there was something there that just pulled her to him and before she knew it she had both of her arms wrapped around him. Kate had no idea what she was doing, but her feet were planted in the floor and she couldn’t bring herself to pull away from him yet. She didn’t say anything, but just stood there probably looking like an idiot while she closed her eyes.

Jason laughed, running his hands through his hair as she reminded him of the time he groped her. "Oh yeah ... I remember now. The first time I touched your boobs," he snickered, covering his mouth. "But, just so you know ... that really was an accident. I didn't mean to touch your boob that day. I wasn't that big of a perv yet," he laughed. "And, yes. You did give me a really hard time about it, because you were incredibly mean to me," he laughed. Listening as she talked about what she wore, he nodded. "Yeah, you did wear a bikini all the time, it was incredibly distracting, I won't lie to you," he told her, nodding. His hand moved to run through his hair again, it was a nervous habit. And talking about the past made him kinda nervous.

Jason was pretty impressed that he was able to get his film taken care of as fast as he did, because he was incredibly distracted by Kate. He could feel the warmth from her body next to him, and all he wanted to do was touch her. But he made himself focus on his work at hand, and he was able to get it done pretty quickly. Waitin for Kate to answer him as he asked about turning on the light, Jason wasn't expecting for her to reach for the light switch. Kate's hand brushed against his stomach, and he sucked in a breath, and then before he even knew what was going on, Kate's head was resting against his chest and her arms were hugging him around the waist. He closed his eyes tightly, his arms instinctively moving to wrap around her as well. He hugged her to his body, moving his head to press his face into her hair.

Kate grinned at Jason, the memories of how shy Jason was and what he was like when she first met him flooding her mind. If Kate had known that she would of ended up dating Jason for a year that day when she first met him she probably wouldn’t of believed it. In ways her and Jason were very different people, but the more they hung out they were able to teach each other so many things, and make each other better people. Kate was determined that Jason was still a person who was ten times better then her, he was such a nice and genuine person when she sometimes really…wasn’t. It still surprised her that he kept her around for so long. “Yeah, I just wanted to see your reaction, it was pretty cute,” Kate said with a grin. She then laughed a bit as his comment about her in a bikini. “I couldn’t help it. It isn’t like you get the chance to practically live in bikinis all of the time.”

A few moments after Kate wrapped her arm around Jason she was expecting him to pull away from her since what she just did was obviously inappropriate considering their situation. He didn’t, and soon enough Kate felt Jason wrap his own arms around her, hugging her closer to him. Kate couldn’t help it but she let out a soft content sigh, just realizing exactly how much she missed the feeling of Jason’s warm arms wrapping around her. It had been so long since they were close like this, and now that they were hugging Kate wasn’t sure if she wanted to let go of him. When Jason pressed his face into her hair she pressed her own face into the crook of his neck and just held herself against him. “I really missed you,” Kate murmured into his neck as she let her body lean into his again. Her heart was already starting to beat fast and she breathed a bit harder to try and slow it down. Though, not long after did Kate hear something drop of the floor and it made a somewhat loud crack. Kate jumped at the noise as it acted like a reality check and immediately pushed herself away from Jason. She took in a deep breath and stepped away from him just realizing exactly what the two of them just did. “Shit, what just dropped?” Kate said to herself as she immediately reached over and turned on the lights. Shit, what did Kate just do?

Jason smiled, rolling his eyes as she told him that she wanted to see his reaction. "Uh-huh. Great idea. Bothering me to get some kind of a rise out of me," he teased, glancing back at her. He ran his hand through his hair, raising a brow at her as she talked about her bikinis. "They were crazy skimpy, woman. Well, even if they weren't skimpy, they still showed way too much skin. And all it did was distract me all the time," he said, laughing. He ran his hand over his face and then glanced back at her.

Having Kate this close to him again, having his arms wrapped around her again ... Jason didn't know what the hell he was doing. His mind was telling him that it was a horrible idea to have his arms around her, to be hugging her this closely, but he couldn't make himself move away. His hand moved around to her back, running up and down it slowly. His heart beat faster as she told him that she missed him, and Jason swallowed, his lips moving to her forehead and pressing to it slowly. "I missed you too. So much," he told her, sighing softly. His face moved down to glance at her, taking in the look on her face. "Kate ..." he said, and then something banged off in the distance, and the two of them jumped apart so quickly it shocked him. He ran a hand over the back of his neck, clearing his throat. "Um, I don't know what it was," he said. Jason scratched the back of his neck again, sighing softly. "I'm ... I'm sorry," he said, glancing back at Kate. He felt horrible, he felt guilty. But most of all, he felt like he wanted to keep holding her.

“That is the point of a bikini, silly. They are suppose to be skimpy.” Kate said with a playful grin. She had never been so comfortable with her body until she arrived on that island. After that Kate got to the point where someone could see her naked and she probably wouldn’t care, but that was because on a hot resort like that everyone was walking around half naked most of the time.

When Jason pressed a kiss to Kate’s forehead she couldn’t help but tighten her hold on his body and lean into him even more. She let out a sigh when he told her that he missed her too, and waited to hear what he had to say but the sound interrupted them too early. When the two of them were apart again and the lights were on Kate ran a hand through her hair and looked all over on the ground to see what dropped, and so that she wouldn’t have to look directly at Jason since she knew for a fact her cheeks would be flushed. Kate spotted a couple of rolls of film that they had not touched yet on the floor and assumed they rolled off and made that noise so Kate quickly bent down and picked them up before setting them on the counter by Jason. It wasn’t until he apologized that she looked at him and she wasn’t sure exactly how she should feel about it. “No, it is okay… it was nice,” Kate said, trying to act as casual as possible. The skin on her forehead where he kissed her still felt extremely hot and her breathing and heart rate were still up a bit more then normal, but she did her best to ignore it.

“So, now we just have to let the chemicals do it’s…thing,” Kate said, referring to the film that was inside of the black separator and hidden from the light. Kate would normally of used more technical terms, but her mind was all over the place and she couldn’t seem to be able to concentrate on anything.

Jason’s heart was still beating way too fast to be healthy, and the palms of his hands itched to touch her. He wanted to keep her close to him, to pull her back and hug her again, even though he knew it would just be a BAD idea. Like, a REALLY bad idea. He had more sense than to shut the lights back off and pull her to him again. Because, if he did that, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to stop himself from completing the sentence he had started, or from kissing him. Both bad things that did not need to happen. And he knew this. Which was why he took a step backwards, pretending to go check the projector machines to make sure they were working. Why the hell wouldn’t they be working? He knew very well that they were, since he had used them the other day. But he needed space. He could still smell her perfume, or her shampoo, and all it was doing was drawing him to her.

Clearing his throat, he glanced over at her as she told him that it was nice. Giving her a small smile, Jason nodded. “Yeah, it was nice. But it was also a bad idea,” he said, turning his attention back to the projector. Why lie about it? It was a bad idea for them to hug, for them to be that close to one another. Granted, working together in a small space like a dark room didn’t give them much room to stay away from each other, but they would have enough room to not be touching. Which was what he needed right now. He needed to not touch her. Returning his gaze to her as she made the comment about the chemicals, Jason smiled. “Yeah, pretty much. We have to make sure to swirl the chemicals around every so often so that they reach all parts of the film,” he reminded her, moving to pull himself up to sit on the counter. “But other than that, we just wait,” he added, shrugging. What the hell were they going to talk about while they waited? The weather? Lame.

No matter how many deep breaths Kate took it felt like her heart was never going to calm down. Now that she had hugged Jason and felt his arms around her body her skin practically screamed to feel it again. She so desperately wanted to feel his warm body against hers and to be able to hear his breathing and press her cheek to his chest so she could hear and feel his heart beat. She just wanted to be close to him again, but it was obviously a very bad idea. Kate knew herself well enough to know that if she let herself get that close to Jason she probably wouldn’t be able to take herself away from him. It wasn’t fair to either of them, or to Jamie and Nicole. Kate cared about Jamie enough to know that she couldn’t put herself in a situation like that, and she felt extremely guilty for the feelings that she was sorting through now as she stood there in the dark room with the lights on looking at Jason.

Even though what Jason said was very true, that didn’t stop Kate from feeling a little bit hurt when he said it. It was certainly a bad idea, but if it was so bad when why did it feel so damn good when they did it? People always said that you want what you can’t have, so Kate assumed that since she obviously couldn’t have Jason near her then that was all that she would want. Or at least that is what she used as an excuse for what she was feeling. “Yeah, it was,” Kate said quietly with a nod as she wrapped her own arms around her body. Kate bit down on her bottom lip and watched as Jason checked out the projector and then nodded when he reminded her to swirl the chemicals around every once in a while. She watched as he sat on the counter and Kate let herself lean on the counter she was by, making sure that she wasn’t standing too close to Jason. Great. Now what? Kate could tell that this next fifteen minutes would be the longest fifteen minutes she would experience in a long time. “So, my mom got married,” Kate said randomly, knowing that she was going to have to think of something for the two of them to talk about. “Well, re-married I guess,” Jason knew all about Kate’s family situation and how her parents were divorced.

Jason’s eyes watched Kate as she stood there, her arms wrapped around herself, and he cleared his throat. He wanted to reach out and touch her again, even though he knew it was wrong. He saw the flash of hurt cross Kate’s face, and he immediately regretted saying that the hug was a bad idea out loud. Whether or not Kate knew it, Jason was still better at reading her than anyone she knew. He had spent an entire year staring at her face, and never tiring of it. He would definitely be able to pick out an emotion as it crossed her face. “I … yeah,” he said, shrugging. She had agreed that it was a bad idea, but that didn’t stop him from feeling bad. “Don’t get me wrong … it really was nice. I did miss you. But we just … we shouldn’t hug, or anything like that,” he said, clearing his throat and crossing his arms over his chest.

Watching as Kate moved to stand by the counter he was sitting on, Jason grabbed one of the canisters with the film inside and started nervously swirling the liquid inside in circles. He needed to do something to keep his hands busy. Having Kate this close to him wasn’t something that Jason thought would be difficult. He thought he would love having her this close to him again. The problem was that he actually did love it. He wanted her back in his life, in more than a friendly way. Pushing those thoughts out of his head, Jason’s eyes concentrated on the canister in his hand. He didn’t want to admit those thoughts to himself, let alone her. And since he was still able to read her so well, he only assumed that she’d be just as good at reading him. He couldn’t help but glance back at her as she spoke again, though, and Jason smiled. “Really? That’s great. I always liked your mom,” he told her, nodding, then laughing. “Well, once I got over the fear that she was going to castrate me, I liked her,” he smiled. “Your dad, though … I still haven’t gotten over that fear,” he added, unable to hold back a laugh as he ran a hand through his hair.

Kate knew very well that Jason could read her better then anyone and that was because the two of them were inseparable when they were together. Jason got to know Kate better then anyone, better then her friends back in Colorado and even sometimes better then her own parents. Kate used to love that about them, it was such a good thing for their relationship when it came to understanding each other, but now that they were not together and Kate had so much she wanted to hide she wished that he couldn’t read her so well anymore. She tried to cover up the hurt look on her face, but once it surfaced she knew that it was too late. She did look up at him when he said that he missed her, those simple words brought back a bunch of feelings and caused that small ache in her heart to increase. She swallowed hard and looked away again, pretending to be suddenly interested in the shoelaces on her worn out converse runners. “Yeah, I know,” Kate said, confirming that she knew they shouldn’t do anything like that, but it didn’t stop her from wanting to.

As Jason grabbed one of the canisters and started swirling the chemicals inside Kate reached over to grab her own and mimicked what he was doing. She too needed something to do with her hands, she was just afraid that since she was so nervous her hands would start shaking. Luckily they didn’t and she swirled the chemicals around a bit before placing the canister back on the counter beside her. Kate had been looking forward to spending time with Jason again, but she didn’t consider how awkward or tense it might be. Kate hated it and missed just being able to be herself around Jason, to not have to think about the things she was going to say or do to him to make sure that they were appropriate. Kate did smile and laugh a bit when Jason talked about her parents. She remembered how scared Jason was of her mom, and especially of her father Simon. “My mom always liked you,” Kate said. “I think Simon did too, he just didn’t show it so well,” Kate then said with a grin. Though, since Kate and Jason were no longer together Simon’s opinion of Jason was indifferent, but she didn’t want to bring that up mainly because she didn’t want to admit out loud that her and Jason were no longer together, and couldn’t be together.

Watching her as she looked down to study her shoelaces, Jason cleared his throat and ran a hand through his hair. He wished things were different. He wished that they had reconnected when neither of them were in any kind of a relationship. Because then, maybe things could have gone back to where they ended. Jason wasn’t stupid, he knew that his feelings for Kate had never gone away, and probably would never go away. They hadn’t parted on bad terms, they didn’t hate each other. They parted out of convenience and distance, there were really no feelings hurt. Well, okay. There were feelings hurt, but not to the extent of most relationships. It wasn’t that they wanted to stop seeing each other, it was just what was easier for them. Sure, Jason should have probably fought harder. And sure, he probably should have told Kate about looking for a job in Providence, but that was in the past now. Sitting around and thinking about what he should have done wasn’t going to help him.

Holding the canister in his hand, Jason moved his hand in a circular motion, swirling the chemicals inside a little bit before he turned the canister upside down and then right side up again. He did that a few times and then swirled everything around again before he set it back down next to him. He, too, hated how awkward things seemed to be now. It was difficult to be so close to Kate and not be able to touch her or tease her the way he used to. Maybe he really wasn’t ready to be friends with her. But that didn’t stop him from being stubborn about it. He wanted Kate in his life, and if that was just as a friend, then so be it. He’d reign it in and keep his hands to himself. Glancing back over at her as she talked about how her mom liked him, Jason nodded. “I know she did. You mom was pretty awesome. She used to give me tips about the ‘way to your heart’,” he told her, smiling as he raised his hands to do air quotes. “Things like bands I needed to listen to, shows I needed to watch. Stuff like that,” he laughed, shaking his head. Raising a brow when she told him that Simon liked him, Jason snickered. “Oh really? Your dad …” he laughed, shaking his head. “Your dad had me terrified for my life. He told me that he had a gun and a shovel, and he wasn’t afraid of Mexican prison,” he laughed at the memory.

Kate tried not to think about the past too much when it came to Jason, especially during that month when she had broken up with him and how she felt after it was over because it was such a hard time for her then. It happened over a year ago, but thinking about what emotions that Kate was going through and how upset she was got to her after a while. Kate cried herself to sleep for a few nights, barely ate for a while and just generally was in a pretty bad mood for quite some time after she had broken up with Jason. It took her friend’s from school months to get Kate to start to going out and mingling again, and even longer to even consider going on any dates. Kate never brought herself to go on an official date with someone, her relationship with Jamie ended up just falling into place after they drank a little too much at a party and ended up sleeping with each other. The past was the past, and Kate couldn’t do anything about it now since things had changed so much in a year. Kate was lucky enough that she could reconnect with Jason at all considering before she had ran into him with Nicole she though Jason was still living in Seattle.

The memory of Kate’s mother talking to Jason when she wasn’t aware that her and Jason were already seeing each other put a smile on her face. Kate’s mother was stupid and she caught on to them pretty quickly, but there was a time when Jason and Kate tried to keep their relationship under wraps because of their fear that her parents would not approve of the age difference between them. Jason was only four years older then Kate, but back when she had just turned eighteen it sounded so much older then now that she was twenty. “I remember that, and still think it is funny,” Kate said with a smile. It didn’t surprise Kate that her mother would do that since the two of them were so close, practically best friends. What Jason said next made Kate laugh more, though she knew that if she had heard about that earlier while on the island she would of probably gotten angry at Simon. “He actually said that to you?!” Kate said in between laughs. “No wonder you were so afraid of my Dad.”

Jason turned into a complete mess after he and Kate broke up, it took awhile for him to be himself again. He went out drinking more often, tried to drown his sorrows in alcohol. He was never the guy who went out and had fun at the bar … he was the quiet guy you saw sitting at the bar with about ten empty beer bottles around him, not talking to anybody. Marcus finally found him up at the bar one night and dragged him home, trying to convince him that no girl was worth putting himself through that mess. Jason disagreed, but he let Marcus help clean his act up. After awhile, the pain started to ease, and Jason was finally able to go out and have fun, but he’d still catch himself thinking about Kate all the time, especially when he was alone. He lost count of the number of times he picked up the phone to call her, but always ended up stopping himself from doing it. Which, was a good thing. At least, that’s what he told himself. And then, he got the job offer in Providence. A few months too late. He actually considered not taking it, but decided that it was too good an opportunity to pass up. He would just stay away from Kate until he was ready to be just friends with her.

A small smile crossed Jason’s face as he thought about Kate’s mom, and he shook his head. “Your mom was always a trip. Trying to give me insider information. And guess what – I didn’t need any of it!” he smiled. Resting his hands on the counter on either side of him, Jason studied her for a moment while she thought. He remembered the whole sneaking around thing, and how much of a pain in the butt it was. Always worried about being caught. But it was what Kate wanted, so he wasn’t going to go against what she wanted just to make things easier for himself. Shaking his head as she said her dad’s threats were funny, Jason laughed again. “No, no. They were not funny. They had me absolutely terrified of your father,” he said, unable to hide the smile on his face. “Remember? Whenever he’d be anywhere near us, I’d immediately drop your hand and take like five steps to the side,” he laughed at the memory. Raising a brow as she laughed harder about the exact threat Simon made, Jason nodded. “Yeah, he actually said that to me! I was terrified,” he smirked.

If Kate had known what her breaking up with Jason did to him then she would probably feel even more terrible then she already did. So, because of that she was glad that she didn’t know and part of her never wanted to find out. Kate still really couldn’t get over the fact that it was her who gave up on the two of them. Jason was Kate’s first love and first person that she had complete faith in. Considering what the two of them had been through and how strongly she felt for Jason she really couldn’t believe that she was actually capable of doing what she did. Though, she remembered how lonely she felt in those months when they were apart, but it was nothing compared to how she felt right after she broke up with him. Kate rarely cried over someone, but she had lost count of how many times she had cried over Jason. She felt terrible for what she did, though Kate always was the one to ruin relationships, wasn’t she? Though, the past as the past and Kate certainly couldn’t chance it now. Kate then thought about Jamie and suddenly felt bad for him that he was stuck with her. What the hell was she going to do to ruin her relationship with him?

As much as it hurt to remember all of the times that Kate and Jason had together on the island, Kate still liked to do it. They had so many great memories and stories from that year, the two of them travelled to Mexico, France and an island off of Africa together, so there was no way they wouldn’t have great memories. “Yeah, she was always one to try and lend a helping hand even if technically it wasn’t needed,” Kate said, smiling back at Jason. It had been so long since Kate had really been able to talk about her time with Jason out loud, she had been too upset to do it before and she didn’t want to talk about her ex boyfriend a lot when she started dating Jamie, and even though it caused the ache in her heart to grow, it also felt good to go through the memories with the one person who was also in them. Jason bringing up how terrified he was of Simon made Kate laugh more. She had never seen what was so scary about her dad, but that was because he was that, her father. Simon was a tall man, and Kate was pretty sure that to anyone else he probably did look really intimidating. “Yeah, I remember that. Though, I am pretty sure he knew we were seeing each other all along. You were like the only guy I hung out with on the island and he called you my boyfriend right before I admitted it to him,” Kate said. “But the bright side is he didn’t kill you.”

Jason didn’t have any plans to tell Kate anything that he went through when they were apart, after she broke up with him. That was the past, and he didn’t want to bring any of it up. He had put that all behind him, and tried to move on with his life. He just wasn’t aware that moving on with his life would bring him closer to her, the one thing that they had broken up over. Distance. Jason was going to try his hardest to just be friends with Kate, and he was going to try to keep things comfortable between them, since he hated awkwardness. It wasn’t going to be easy, and he’d probably spend a lot of his time alone thinking, but he could do it. He was stronger than he gave himself credit for, really. If Jason knew that Kate was blaming herself, he probably would have done everything in his power to make her see that it wasn’t all her fault. He was the moron that didn’t tell her that he was looking for a job in Providence to move closer to her. He was the moron that didn’t tell her that he was looking for apartments in Providence, too. He should have told her, and he kicked himself for that all the time.

He liked remembering the times they had spent together too, even if it hurt every once in awhile. Most of the memories were good ones, fun ones. They had a few fights, but so did every other couple. A relationship wasn’t functional if you didn’t fight every once in awhile. It was normal! Jason ran his hand through his hair and smiled at her. “Your mom was always nice, though,” he said, nodding. He grabbed his canister and checked his watch, nodding. “It’s time to take the film out,” he told her, surprised at how fast the fifteen minutes had flown by. He swirled the chemicals around another time before he hopped off the counter and opened the lid. “No, your dad never killed me. Which, yeah. That’s definitely a bright side,” he laughed, smiling over at her as he dumped the chemicals into the sink, turning on the water to wash them down. Pulling the circular wheel out of the canister, Jason set the canister in the sink and then unwound the film, shaking it out a couple times to get the excess chemicals off. He hung the line of film up with a clothes pin, and turned the fan on it.

Kate did her best to not think about the past and what happened between her and Jason while the two of them stood around in a dark room, but it was an extremely hard thing to do. Whenever someone told you not to think about something it would all of a sudden be the only thing on your mind, what Kate was going through right now proved that. She tried her best not to think about the break up, or what she went through leading up to that phone call and how she felt after, but of course the only thing going through her mind was what could have been, and what her and Jason would be doing right now if they were both single. Well, they certainly wouldn’t be single anymore because she knew for a fact they would of reconnected, and they certainly would be doing more then just standing in the dark room developing films. OK, Kate really needed to stop thinking about that, because she was suddenly getting images of her and Jason kissing with their hands all over each other pressed against the counter. Chairs. Yes, chairs was a good thing to think about.

Of course Jason and Kate fought when they were together. All of their memories were not happy ones, but a majority of them were. There always was an occasional fight between the two of them, but it was usually over something stupid that always ended up in make up sex. Really hot make up - CHAIRS. Think about chairs Kate! “Yeah, my mom is pretty awesome,” Kate said with a nod, she really did miss her mom when she was gone to school. Kate too was surprised at how quickly the fifteen minutes went by, but she wasn’t complaining. She watched Jason hop off the counter and take his canister and head to the sink, so Kate grabbed her own and did the same. She went to the same sink that Jason was at, which she immediately regretted because that put the two of them in close proximity together. Kate swallowed hard and did the same thing to her own film, dumping the chemicals, rinsing them up and then hanging them by Jason’s. “It is, I am pretty sure I would have been pretty upset if he killed you and then went to a Mexican jail,” Kate teased, touching his arm without even thinking about what she was doing.

Jason had done a lot of his own thinking about the way things could have been and the ‘what ifs’ that surrounded their situation. What if he had told Kate that he was planning a move to Providence? She probably would have waited for him to get there, and then they would have been happy. Probably still together, a year later. He liked to think they would still be together, anyway. What if Jason got to Providence and found Kate right away? Maybe she would be single, and they could have reconnected and gotten back together. Maybe a lot of things could have happened. There wouldn’t be this awkward tension in the dark room, that was for sure. Jason probably wouldn’t be getting any work done whatsoever, but that didn’t matter. The things they used to do in the dark room were far better and way more fun than getting work done. Shaking those thoughts out of his head, Jason forced himself to think about something else as well. He decided he was going to focus on staplers. Yeah, staplers couldn’t have any kind of sexual innuendo.

Smiling, Jason nodded. “I’m glad that she ended up finding someone for her. Everyone deserves to find that one person that makes them happy,” he said, immediately regretting the words as soon as they were out of his mouth. Clearing his throat, Jason turned to pull himself back on the counter after he finished hanging up his film and watched Kate hang hers, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back against the cabinets behind him. Raising a brow, Jason scoffed. “Would you have been upset because your dad was in jail, or because he killed me?” he asked, pretending to be hurt, but only able to keep the smile off his face for a few moments. Clearing his throat, he shook his head. “Okay, enough about your terrifying father. I’m starting to get paranoid,” he joked, smiling. “So what other classes are you taking, besides photography ones?” he asked curiously, trying to find some kind of a subject they could talk about that wouldn’t bring up any old memories or make either of them too uncomfortable.

Once Kate was fully done hanging up her films she watched Jason go back to the counter and decided to keep it safe and lean against the counter where she was at. She didn’t want to touch him again, even if it was just a casual pat on the arm because for Kate no physical contact between her and Jason could just be casual. Maybe later, after she got used to the idea of seeing him around more often and them not being together anymore. Kate looked up at Jason when he said that he was glad that her mother had found someone for her. Kate was glad too, she watched how hurt her mother was over her father, and how long it took for her to get over him, so she was very happy that Ian made her mother happy. What Jason said next did put take off guard a bit, but she bit her bottom lip and tried to stay as casual as possible to not make things any more awkward then they already were. “Yeah, I am really happy for her as well,” Kate said, looking down at her feet again and running a hand through her hair. She decided to just ignore that part of Jason’s statement because she was afraid of what she would say if she replied to it.

Kate grinned at Jason when he teased and looked up pretending to think hard about what he asked her. “Well, I guess I would be pretty upset that you died.” she teased, glad that the two of them could still joke around a bit, it certainly was something that she really did miss about spending time with Jason, along with about a million other things. Kate then grinned again, still finding it amusing that Jason was scared of her dad, especially since he was all the way in Colorado and in no way could reach Jason right now. Not like Simon would do anything to Jason if he could. “I am generally sticking with visual arts, but now that I am in my second year I kind of want to get more into some music theory classes as well. Right now I am in a class once a week that talks about music influences throughout the last fifty years. It is really interesting, actually.”

Shaking his head as Kate pretended to think hard about which made her more upset, Jason crossed his arms over his chest. "That hurts. The fact that you even had to think about it," he said, unable to keep a smile off his face. "But at least you made the right decision," he told her, nodding his head. Jason was trying to be casual with her, back to his joking self, and put behind all the strange awkwardness that had seemed to center in the dark room. He didn't like being awkward around Kate, it just felt weird. He had known Kate for a few years, and they had been close for a long period of that time. Being awkward around her just seemed weird to him, so he didn't want any awkward silences or tension in the room. Though, that was hard, since the tension could practically be cut with a knife.

Nodding as Kate talked about her classes, Jason uncrossed his arms and rested his hands on the edge of the countertop on either side of him. "That sounds realy cool," he agreed, nodding his head at her comments about the music class she was taking. He couldn't hide the smile on his face. "I'm sure that's working out really well for you, I'll bet you just love that class," he said, sitting up to scratch behind his neck. Jason remembered how much Kate loved music, it wasn't hard to tell that she'd probably love a class where you could study music.

Reaching out and feeling that the film was pretty dry now, Jason hopped off the counter and grabbed the scissors, cutting the negatives into a few strips and then handing a couple strips to Kate. "Here, we can go ahead and make some proofs," he told her, handing her a thick black bag full of photo paper. "The proofs are really small, just wallet sized photos. So make sure you use this template," he told her, handing her a piece of metal with a white wallet sized photo rectangle on it. "You can focus the image on that, and then turn off the projector, put the photo paper where the white is, and then make your proof," he explained, giving her a smile. He didn't want to go into the legistics of how to work a projector, since he was pretty certain she knew. She was a photography student, after all, and he didn't want to insult her intelligence or anything.

Kate smiled at Jason, he knew best out of everyone how much in love with music Kate was. She didn’t really play anything anymore, and rarely sung in public, but she just loved music and the industry in general. Being able to go to a class and talk about music and how it has been influenced through out the last fifty years was amazing for Kate. She loved the class and was so happy that she could do it for school. “I really do love that class, it is so awesome. My favourite, by far,” Kate said with a grin. Kate liked most of her classes, especially her photography ones that were hands on, but nothing could beat out music.

Once Jason felt the film and saw that it was dry Kate pushed herself away from the counter and got ready to do some more work. Though, developing film with Jason would never seem like work to her because she used to sit and help Jason develop films all of the time on the island just for fun. Well, they would develop films when they were not making out and taking off- ok, chairs. Think of chairs. “Sound’s good,” Kate said, taking the strips from Jason and then the black bag that was full of photo paper. She nodded her head as he explained the size to her and took the template that he passed her. Kate kept all of the things she needed at her station, including the photo paper in the black bag. She got to work pretty quickly, getting everything set up at the projector, making sure the template was in place and her picture was nice and clear.

“So, what is it like being an official professional photographer at a studio?” Kate asked, feeling that she had to keep the conversation going. If she stayed silent for too long then Kate’s mind started to wonder, and that was never a good thing.

Smiling as Kate talked about the class and how much she loved it, Jason nodded. “Well, I can definitely see why that class would be your favorite. It sounds like it’s exactly right up your alley, Kate. That’s great,” he glanced over at her and gave her a smile as he set up his projector. “Everyone needs those classes that they like more than others, because otherwise you’d hate going to school,” he laughed, shaking his head. “When I was in school, I made sure I had a class that I liked every semester, otherwise the math and things like that would just make me angry,” he smirked, shaking his head. “I’m sure that music thing doesn’t even really seem like a class, right?” he smiled.

Once the projectors were set up, Jason turned around and turned off the light again, so that they were surrounded in darkness once more. The red light provided enough for them to see that there was another person in the room with them, but that was about it. Jason took his film and put it in the top portion of the projector, then turned on the light, shooting the image down onto the template. He lowered the projector top so that the image was smaller, and then worked on the focus, nodding when he had the photo right. “Working in a real studio is like a dream come true for me,” he answered Kate’s question while he worked, glancing over at her every so often. “I mean, you know how much I love photography, so being able to do it for a living, for real? It’s amazing,” he told her, nodding. “I get to do really cool photo shoots and stuff. And, of course, every once in awhile I’m stuck doing projects like this one, the senior pictures for some girl whose parents thought a regular photo place wasn’t good enough,” he rolled his eyes, but smiled. “It’s still awesome, though.”

Turning off the projector, Jason reached for the photo paper, before realizing that he had given the bag to Kate. He reached around the black plank of wood between projectors, feeling the thick plastic that the paper was in, as well as something warm. Jason realized immediately that it was Kate’s hand. Turning to look at her, he tried to force himself to pull his hand back, but his body would not listen to him. He licked his lips, moving his hand to completely cover hers.

“Yeah, I generally like all of my classes since most of them are in the Visual Arts department, but considering the work load I get it is nice to have a class where I really enjoy doing my homework, so it gives me a bit of a break,” Kate said. She generally like school because none of her classes were boring. If she had to take a science or social class then she would probably hate it, or at least get very bored of it and not be motivated to do her homework. “Yeah, it doesn’t seem like a class at all. I get to go and talk about music for three hours straight, and then write a few papers on it. The papers are not so fun, but at least I always know that I have something that I want to write about.”

Kate glanced over in Jason’s direction every so often as he spoke, smiling at him but she was sure that he couldn’t see it but that didn’t stop her. She was really happy for him that he had found a job in photography that he loved. Yes, he was an official photographer while working on the island, but back then all he did was take pictures of tourists for the most part, and Kate knew that wasn’t what Jason wanted to do for the rest of his life. “Yeah, it sounds pretty awesome,” Kate said. She then wondered if that was how Jason met Nicole, through a photo shoot. Nicole was a part time model and Jason was a photographer, so it made sense. She was just about to ask him when she stopped herself, suddenly not wanting to talk or bring up Nicole, his girlfriend at the moment, at all.

Kate was reaching into the bag of photo paper that she had placed between her and Jason when she felt his hand reach in there to take some paper himself. She didn’t think anything of it and assumed that they could both just grab the paper at the same time, but she froze when his hand touched hers. His warm hand touched hers and when she thought he would immediately pull away he didn’t. Kate wanted to pull away herself, because the butterflies that suddenly hit her stomach told her that it wasn’t a good idea for their hands to be touching, but she couldn’t bring herself to pull away either. Kate’s heart immediately picked up it’s beat and her breathing increase a bit when she turned to see that Jason was looking at her, and she couldn’t tear her eyes away from his. She felt his hand move to cover hers completely and Kate suddenly found her thumb involuntarily running along the skin of Jason’s hand, whatever it could reach. More involuntary actions continued as Kate found herself stepping closer to Jason.

Jason nodded. “Yeah, liking your classes is definitely important. It keeps things easier for you, and when you want to do your homework … that’s a good thing,” he laughed, smiling over at her. “When you get into that mindframe where you’re all boo on homework, that’s bad. Because homework’s important, even if it’s not part of your grade. Helps you learn,” he nodded. Great. Now he sounded like he was lecturing her. What the hell? Clearing his throat, he went into his shpeal about his job and how much he loved it, Jason smiled as she said that it was pretty awesome. “It really is. I get to do the job that I love, and make pretty okay money. I mean, I’m not making great money, but it’s better than nothing. And I’m able to afford a car payment, and rent on my apartment, so that’s important. I mean, I don’t have a massive amount of spending money after I get my bills paid, but I don’t really do much outside of work,” he confessed, shrugging. “I’ve got a few friends out here, mostly people that I met through work,” he admitted. He purposely left Nic out of the conversation, and that made him feel guilty.

But what made him feel even more guilty was the way he was apparently unable to move away from her after their hands touched. Feeling Kate’s thumb running back and forth over his hand after he covered hers with it was amazing, he didn’t think that he’d ever feel that amazing way his heartbeat would increase just from hands touching again. He didn’t get that with Nicole, and he wished that he did. When it never happened, Jason just told himself that Kate had been special, and he’d lost that. But now, here he was, feeling the electricity that was sparking between their hands, and his heartbeat was getting faster. He turned more towards her in time to see her take a step closer, and Jason swallowed. He took a step closer as well, and against his better judgement, he rose his free hand to her face. He hesitated a moment before he touched her, but then he pressed his hand to her cheek and leaned his head forward, pressing his forehead against hers. He sucked in a breath, closing his eyes as he just rested his forehead there. He needed to take a step back, he needed to put some much needed distance between them. But he knew he couldn’t do it.

Kate couldn’t help but grin when Jason said ‘boo on homework’. It was such an adorable thing for him to say, and something that could instantly put a smile on Kate’s face. She didn’t mind at all that he was going into a big shpeal about school, it didn’t seem like a big lecture to her at all. Jason had been to college before and knew what it was like, so he of course would know what he was talking about. “Well, I would rather make less money doing something that I love then making tons of money with something that I hate,” Kate said with a nod. With Kate’s grades she could of taken anything she wanted at Brown and gotten a job that made tons of money when she graduated, but Kate wasn’t like that. She wasn’t materialistic at all and would rather be happy then loaded with money. That was why Kate took her time thinking about what she wanted to take in school, and picked something that she loved. “That is like me with school. Pretty much everyone I hang out with I met through school, for the most part,” Kate didn’t mention Jamie either on purpose.

Kate too felt guilty for not being able to pull her hand away from Jason’s, and from running her thumb along his skin and even more for stepping closer to him. She knew everything she was doing right now was wrong but there really was nothing that she could do to stop it. She too felt the electricity that generated between them and couldn’t help but admit to herself that Jason was the only one who was able to affect Kate like this just by touching her hand. Her heat beat was increasing and her breathing was getting stronger and she couldn’t believe this was happening just by a touch of the hand. Yes, Jamie was known to make Kate feel this way, but it took a lot more then just a simple touch to do it. Kate saw Jason turn towards her and lift his hand to her face. Her head automatically tilted a bit towards his touch and leaned her head forward up to his and closed her eyes for a moment when their foreheads first met. Kate took a deep breath in and didn’t let her hand leave Jason’s. She too needed to take a step back, but her body wasn’t listening to her and before she knew it her face was tilting up towards his and her body was stepping even closer to him.

Jason nodded. “Exactly. That’s the exact way that I’m looking at it. I’d rather be doing this and making enough money to live on, than be doing something in a corporate stuffy office, sitting on my ass all the time, and hating it,” he said, shaking his head. “That’s just … it’s not me,” he shrugged.

Before Jason knew what was going on, his brain seemed to be catching up to what his body was doing, and every coherent thought he could form was telling him to back up, get the fuck out of there. This was wrong. He had Nicole, Kate had Jamie. Standing here in a dark room, holding Kate’s hand and letting his other hand caress Kate’s cheek … this was just bad. Bad bad bad. Back the fuck up. But no matter what his head was telling him to do, his heart and his body just would not listen. Kate took another step closer to him, and she was leaning her head up like she was going to kiss him, and Jason’s brain screamed at him to get out of there. But Jason couldn’t force himself to move at all. All he could focus on was the anticipation of his lips against Kate’s again, and how much he wanted to kiss her and hold her close again. The more Jason thought about it, the more he realized that Kate still meant the world to him, and he couldn’t shake that. Moving his head down more so he could kiss her, their lips were only about an inch or so apart from one another before a door slammed, startling him. Jason jumped and instinctively moved away from Kate, just in time for one of his co-workers to come into the dark room. Jason’s heart was still beating incredibly fast, and he ran a hand through his hair, and then down his face, resting over his mouth. “Hey, what’s up?” he tried to sound casual, but he sounded breathless.

The closer Kate stepped toward’s Jason the more she could smell him and the combination of that and hearing his breathing in the now silent dark room caused Kate to feel a bit dizzy. He heart was now hammering in her chest and her mind was yelling at her to slow down, back up and get the hell out of the dark room and away from Jason. Though, as soon as their foreheads touching and her mouth was so close to his her body stopped listening to any sense that she tried to talk herself into and all she wanted to do was press her lips against Jason’s. It was wrong and Kate knew that, but right now with him so close to her and not being able to kiss him after so long she just couldn’t help herself. As much as Kate tried to talk herself out of it, she still had feelings for Jason and she was certain that they wouldn’t go away now that he was back in her life. She shouldn’t of asked him to let her shadow him because it was apparent to her now that she just couldn’t handle being alone with him.

Kate sucked in a breath of air as Jason moved his head down to kiss her, and she tilted her head up a bit to press her lips to his, but then suddenly a door slammed and Kate jumped as well. Jason stepped away from her, and she glanced a him not being able to move from the shock of what just about happened. When one of Jason’s co workers came into the dark room Kate glanced over at them, not being able to stop the slightly dirty look that was on her face. Kate then folded her arms across her chest and took a step back trying to stop her heart from pounding so hard. Kate had to get out of there, now. She then looked at her wrist where a watch would have been and then back at Jason. “I really should get going, I forgot that I needed to pick up a few things and finish a project for school,” Kate said, a bit breathless herself. She didn’t care that she had photos that still needed to be developed, she just needed to get out of there right away. “Um, thanks for everything, I will have to stop by another time.”
