Who: Stephen Cornfoot and Daphne Greengrass
What: The most awkward romantic dinner ever?
Where: Muggle London
When: Thursday evening
Rating: Probably G
There was a table set up for them at the edge of the restaurant, separate to the others to provide them with enough privacy they could talk freely. Well, as freely as two people about to plunge into a wedding that neither of them had planned to have, at least not yet. The view from the windows were magnificent though, so at least when (not if—because Stephen was confident it would) the conversation dried up, at least they could enjoy the sky high view of London. That was one of the reasons Stephen had insisted on this location, the other reason being that if he was going to be thrown out of his comfort zone so incredibly far, might as well go the full length. Unfamiliar ground to discuss his future with an unfamiliar woman.
Stephen had arrived early, accompanied by one of his father’s assistants, probably to make sure he didn’t run off. He hadn’t even bothered to learn the assistant’s name. He hadn’t bothered to do a lot of things recently, like reading or practicing spells for his NEWTs. His enthusiasm for life had taken a dip after the events of the beginning of August.
He was already almost at the bottom of his first glass of pinot noir when Daphne arrived. He spotted her instantly as she stepped out of the lift, and though he felt butterflies in his stomach, it wasn’t because of how beautiful she looked. More like a looming sense of hopelessness.
“Daphne,” He stood to greet her as she approached the table, straightening himself up, trying his very best not to look as reluctant and depressed as he felt, “You’re looking beautiful.”
