Orders placed, glasses full, they were once against left in peace. Stephen was quick to pick up his wine, though he did worry that she might start to notice he was making quick work of the alcohol. Still, he was feeling so tightly wound that it didn't seem to be having any effect at all.
He was mid-gulp when Daphne hit him with her question and it was all he could do not to choke! He coughed into his glass and quickly pulled up his napkin to mop his lips. He placed his glass back onto the table slowly as he thought about how to best phrase his answer. Once again he couldn't bring himself to look at her face.
