Hurricane Party!
Who: Ginny and the other residents of the resort
What: Hurricane Party!
When: Day 10, around 7 PM.
Where: The White Sands Resort Bar and Club
Rating: PG? I don't know what crazy shenanigans are going to occur.
Status: In progress.

Ginny hated being stuck indoors.

She almost literally been trying to climb the walls in her frustration when she'd decided to throw a hurricane party. She hadn't met many of the residents, and figured if there was anyone else as irritated at being stuck inside then they'd appreciate the change of scenery. It'd also give people a chance to mingle and meet. She wondered if there were others from her world here besides Tonks.

The planet had been most accomodating to her ideas. The club was currently themed for a luau, and small lanterns shed a soft glow over numerous smaller groupings of tables as well as over the dance floor and bar. She hadn't been sure what the other residents might eat, so she'd asked for a large selection of snacks. The bar was well-stocked as well. She didn't recognize all of the things stocked, but she did notice a bottle of Firewhiskey and what appeared to be butterbeer.

Now all this party needed was people. Maybe she'd get to see Max again.

Kadaj had spent only his second day on Mirage exploring the resort. He began in the area nearest the F-building that housed his room. Not long after he started walking the halls, going past the entertainment room, home theatre, a training room and a fitness center, and then finding the doorway which had brought him into this place from the courtyard with the tablet, he wondered why he hadn't met anyone else. He remembered Anakin's comments about being able to find people in the restuarant, so he turned in that direction.

This was when he heard voices and a laugh. If he wasn't mistaken, the sound came from closer than the restaurant but walls blocked his view. He followed the laughter to a door. More sounds of activity came from inside the room: numerous voices and some kind of odd music.

Kadaj walked in alertly, gloved hand holding the hilt of his sword. He was dressed exactly the way he had arrived, all in black leather, except for no longer being drenched from the ongoing storm. Moving along the wall to one side so no one could sneak up behind him, he observed the large room and its occupants before deciding if he should approach anyone. His brothers definitely weren't there and neither did he see Anakin or Ayla.

The people didn't seem impressive, except for one older man who was performing magic antics. He might be the one to speak with. Kadaj began moving around the room and on his way, he paid attention to food placed on a long table. He stopped in front of a dish, picking it up so he could sniff its contents.

Katara had seen the notice for the Hurricane Party after training when she’d stopped to get some food. Training, combined with small amounts of sleep, had made her quite hungry. It was announced that it would be held around seven o’clock in the evening in the bar area. It was going to be a Luau hosted by Ginevra Weasley with a picture of a young woman who might have been her age. The waterbender hardly knew anyone in this place, least of all Ginevra Weasley, so she decided that she should go, she simply wouldn’t stay too long. Sleep was a necessity after all.

The Water Tribe femme had eaten her dinner, and she wanted to bathe and change into something more festive. She had no idea what a Luau even was, but it was a party, and she didn’t want to wear her usual attire. From the decorations on the notice, it didn’t appear to be a formal party, so she would dress causally but nicely.

Katara donned a blood-red halter top that V’ed at the bottom hem in the front, revealing her midsection quite nicely. Just beneath her breasts on the top was an embroidered golden bead design. The trim was a much darker red, the same shade as the sarong skirt she wore that tied in the front. Redish brown sandals with gold accents were placed upon her feet, and a gold chain decorated her right ankle. Two gold bands were placed around her upper arms, and two red fabric bracelets adorned her wrists. A red and gold choker replaced her mother’s necklace- though she spent quite a while trying to decide whether or not to wear the blue necklace despite it’s lacking coordination. Finally, she piled half of her hair upon her head in a top-knot of sorts, keeping it in place with a hairpiece that was decorated with a golden flame. She made sure to grab at least a small, unobtrusive water skin, just as a precaution.

When she entered the bar area, she felt a small amount of disappointment set inside her. There were only a dozen people, three of whom she’d met previously, and one who she remembered from the notice. Oh well, eight new people were better than none. The music sounded strange to her ears, but she found she quite liked it. The atmosphere was happy and relaxed. The decorations reminded her of something she would have seen at an Ember Island party in the Fire Nation, except there was a lot more colour to them.

A smile slipped over her face upon seeing an elderly man cause a lantern to float about, and she found herself wondering if he was airbending to make it do that. Then she was reminded of the display of waterbending at the feast Chief Arnook held for Aang, Katara, and Sokka when they visited the North Pole for the first time. It had been beautiful, and Katara wondered if she could give the others a similar display. It had been beautiful, especially if she could get water of varying colours. That all depended on how things went. She’d never performed in front of people on purpose before. The thought of everyone watching her made her shiver a little, but if she did decide to go through with it, it would be an interesting experience.

Katara looked around and spotted a table filled with foods she had never seen before, but they didn’t look half bad. A man was standing in front of it, sniffing something from a plate. Curious about both him and the food, she approached. “Do you know what any of this stuff is?” She asked, indicating the snacks.

Kadaj looked up at her from beneath his white eyebrows, still slightly bent over the food on the plate. His green eyes unblinkingly took in all the red and gold she wore, her fashion seeming foreign to him but not unpleasant. The look reminded him a bit of fire and he liked explosions.

He blinked once but continued to stare at her as he straightened his posture before responding: "This seems to be some kind of animal protein I'm not familiar with. How long have you been on Mirage?" he wondered. The young male stood there, still holding the dish and looking at her almost like he was memorizing every detail. She was taller than him and had an athletic look to her body.

Katara noticed he was shorter when she approached than he had seemed when she’d been standing a ways away. He also appeared to be younger than her initial perceptions. Perhaps he was sixteen or seventeen- roughly three years younger than her. The white of his hair had made her think he was older, prematurely grayed maybe, but older. “Animal protein, huh?” Silver-blue eyes passed over the food item in her hand. It did look a bit meaty. Sokka would have loved it. Her gaze scanned over the food items, and she found something that had fruit on it. At least she hoped it was fruit, but it looked similar to fruits in her own world, so she lifted the item from a tray to look it over.

“I’ve been here for about nine days. What about you?” The waterbender asked before biting into the morsel. It was delicious, and the taste of the mango mixed with some sort of sweet spread over the cookie-like bread was a delight. It was a kind of fruit found in her own world, all right. When she finished chewing the bite, she wiped her lips to make sure she hadn’t gotten anything on them before looking at him again. “I’m Katara. What’s your name?”

He continued watching her until she responded with her first answer, when he turned back to the spread of food on the table. Kadaj put down the plate of meat as he said "I just got here yesterday." He observed Katara tasting a bit of something before he walked around the entire display of food, moving somewhat like he was on a military campaign. Almost without exception he held himself like the SOLDIER Sephiroth had been, straight of back and alert to his environment.

"My name is Kadaj," he introduced himself once he had eyed all the various edibles. Standing not too far from her, Kadaj served himself rice and put a scoop of beans on top of the fluffy white grains. "Are there a lot of people here? Do you know why we're here? Have you met anyone else from your world? Do you know anyone else in this room?"

Katara perceived his militaristic stance, reminded of the Earth Kingdom soldiers. His eyes seemed to gaze about with skepticism and some curiosity, as if he were analyzing everything within his sights. Finally he seemed trusting enough of the items on the table to try some, and the waterbender’s lips formed into a small, discrete smile. In a way, he almost reminded her of a scientist who finally resigned himself to the stage of testing.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kadaj.” The Water Tribe femme responded. Then she was bombarded with questions without space between them to really respond one after the other. Each inquiry was filed away into her mind until she could answer. “Yes, I believe there are many people here. I don’t even know half of them, but this place is quite populated. I don’t really know why we’re here. I’m assuming we’re just toys of the Planet to torment and observe, though. It has a cruel way of emotionally torturing those who live here if you can find the right places to fall into a carefully laid trap. So far, there has been only one person from my world who I’ve seen. I’m lucky enough that she is a friend of mine, and not an enemy. Um… Yes. I know a few.” She began to point out each one of them.

“The woman in the pretty dress with the long red hair is Giselle. I met her one day when the Planet forced us to do activities. We had to go bowling together. She’s incredibly kind, and she’s a wonderful person. The drunk man over there with the blond woman told me to address him as The Doctor. I don’t know his real name, or if he even has one. He’s an interesting person. Hrm… The warrior woman over there with the dark hair is Xena. She’s been training me on the use of a staff.” Katara noticed a few more people had entered since she’d done so, and two more faces were familiar. “That man over there, with the short dark hair with that woman who has dark hair as well is Clark, and the younger boy over there is Max. He’s the one who greeted me when I first arrived.” Katara made a note in her mind that she would have to talk to him again, as she hadn’t seen him since she’d gotten here. “Other than that, I don’t know anyone. Oh! That other red-headed girl over there, with the very young looking girl is Ginevra Weasely, but I only know that because her name was on the notice I saw about this party. She’s the hostess.

“Do you know anyone here?” The waterbender asked before finishing the rest of her snack.

He paid careful attention to everything she said, looking away from her only when she began naming others in the room. His eyes observed each person she identified but if he formed any initial judgment it wasn't obvious from his expression.

"I have only met Anakin, Ayla and now you," Kadaj answered, looking directly back at her. This whole time he held his plate but seemed to ignore it. Once again he glanced at the rest of the room.

"So you like everyone you have met so far?" He tilted his head slightly as he looked from Giselle back to Katara. "How does the Planet force you to do activities? Why is the drunk Doctor interesting?" Besides wearing strange items on his person? "Does Xena fight with swords?" He noted that Clark continued his conversation and Max had begun talking to someone now. "And am I supposed to introduce myself to Ginevra Weasley?"

Katara’s silver gaze passed over the room. She could spot neither Anakin nor Ayla because she’d never met them, and Kadaj hadn’t exactly picked them out from the crowd. The waterbender noticed he wasn’t touching the food, and wondered if perhaps he was simply putting on airs of normalcy for the sake of his surroundings. Was there something he was hiding about himself? She chided herself for being suspicious without just reasoning behind it.

“So far? Yes, I suppose I have liked everyone. They all seem really nice, but I haven’t really seen much of any one person to be able to get to know them better.”

The barrage of questions came once more. This young man was certainly a curious one. Questions weren’t so bad, though; they helped a person learn. Katara wanted to learn all she could as well, so she didn’t grudge him his interest in the people. “He knows a lot of things. He taught me some things about technology that isn’t available in the world I’m from, and I taught him about waterbending and the other bending abilities. His personality is quite interest when he’s sober, though. A very kind man with an inquisitive nature.

“Xena? She fights with everything. When I first met her she was training with a sword, though, and she knows enough about staffs to train me a bit, though she admitted once that her friend knows more about the weapon and could train me better at it.”

Katara lifted another item from the table. It was a bottle of sorts with a strange lid keeping it closed. The waterbender tugged at it, but it didn’t budge. She attempted a few more maneuvers in attempts to unseal the drink, and eventually it released its hold when she twisted it counter clockwise. A fizzing sound emitted from the contents of the bottle that caused the young woman’s brow to rise. Would this be safe to drink when it sounded like that?

“I don’t know. It couldn’t hurt, but I don’t think it’s a requirement. I aim to meet others here who I haven’t met before, like you. It’s probably a good idea to try to get to know as many people as possible because they might be able to aid in getting out of here.”

Paying attention to the woman's responses, he realised he liked hearing her talk, not merely because she gave direct answers but her voice was nice. Some quality in her speech was actually comforting, and Kadaj wasn't one to seek such a thing.

"Water bending?" he wondered out loud. This sounded like it promised more than a mere passing curiosity on his part. Any other 'magic' not controlled through the use of Materia was fascinating.

It vaguely occurred to him he had never thought before about admiring a female's voice but there were many things Kadaj was doing for the first time.

Being in a room with so many people... he didn't feel compelled to control or destroy.

Being at a party because what were parties aside from others making fools of themselves?

Being there without his brothers....

His brow furrowed beneath the white hair always falling forward over his face and he stared down at the food on his dish. Kadaj decided to taste the rice and beans. After all, how different could they be here from when he had eaten such fare on his own planet? He found the taste to be good and he reflected momentarily on how the welcoming tablet promised sustenance.

"I conclude you haven't seen men who look like me?" The barrage of his questions dwindled down to only two as he circled a more personal subject.

Katara smiled when he asked about waterbending. Everyone always did if she mentioned it, and it was such a part of her life it was rare to go about without referencing it or bringing it up somehow. Maybe another part of it was that she liked having this ability to show others. It was another form of knowledge that she could give to those who knew nothing about it. “Waterbending is one of the four bending abilities in my world. People who bend use the qi that flows through their bodies to bend whichever element they happen to feel an affinity with. It usually happens that people bend the element that’s closest associated with the country they live in. I think it has something to do with ancestry and the culture.”

The waterbender knew there was water within the liquid mixture that had fizzed at her when she removed the cap from the bottle, so she decided to demonstrate a little. Placing her fingers over the small opening, she pulled them away smoothly, and a stream of dark liquid flowed from the bottle. “If there’s water in something, I can bend it. Whether I get it from the air, a plant, or a good water source like a river or a lake.” She neglected to mention people in that list. “I don’t know what this stuff is, but it has water in it.” She moved her hand so the brown liquid formed into a spiraling stream that moved back into the bottle. It fizzed again, leaving a cream coloured foam to settle. Why would the Planet feed them poison?

Katara looked up from the bottle a bit startled at the question. What had given him that idea? “Not really. Normally people in my world don’t have grey hair until they’re elderly, though I knew one girl when I was younger who had white hair. She had been touched by the Moon Spirit, though.” Katara said, as if being touched by a Moon Spirit were a perfectly plausible excuse to have white hair.

The young woman's words interested him to the point that he almost completely ignored the rest of the room while focusing on her. A part of him remained aware of their surroundings, though. It wasn't habit but genetic programming that originated from the Jenova cells inside him. The long-ago alien influence that made him better, stronger, and perhaps mad. But those who couldn't comprehend always resorted to the weak accusations of 'dark magic' or 'madness'.

Kadaj's pupils narrowed into slits when he watched her demonstrate 'waterbending' using the drink. Anyone who was unable to understand she might have this talent would withdraw in fear too, and then most likely seek to destroy her. Except they probably couldn't--

"So you can bend this storm raging around us, or you can bend the water in a living creature," he concluded in gentle tones contrasting with the violence such an act might inflict. He had a vision of the water being pulled from an enemy and instintively knew Jenova would have revelled in using this as a method of torture. As would Sephiroth but he was merely a pretender, for without the alien cells, he would have never been so great.

"You mentioned four bending abilities. Water, earth, air and... fire? And whichever one your gi has the most affinity for is usually decided by your nationality? Does this mean you lived by an ocean?"

He closed his eyes momentarily while he considered the Moon Spirit. Memories of the bluish light in the Forbidden City played in his mind and he missed that soft glow subverting all the other colours. He wanted to retreat to his room away from this garish party but a good soldier didn't go running off like an untried child.

"Moon and Water are an eternal pair," Kadaj said gently as his eyes opened to regard Katara once again.

Katara was a bit shocked when she looked up from her bending to see his pupils had become slits the way some animals’ pupils did. She hadn’t noticed that his held the same strange, vertical feline quality. “Wow. Your eyes remind me of a pygmy pumas’ or a cat owls’.” A smile lit her lips. She wasn’t appalled. It was quite interesting, actually, in a strange way.

The smile left her face when he mentioned bending water in living beings. “Yes. I’m actually more powerful in the storm because there’s so much water available. I don’t really like to bend water in people. I can only do it when the moon is full because that’s when waterbending is at it’s peak, but I’ve only done it twice. I hope never to have the need to bloodbend again. I don’t like to have that kind of power over people.” She admitted, though her tone had turned solemn. The waterbender would never even think to actually pull water out of a person’s body.

Katara was grateful for the change of subject, and leapt at the chance to speak of something other than things she regretted. “Yes. That’s right. Those are the four bending elements. I guess, yeah. Waterbenders usually live near oceans. I grew up in the South Pole while most of the Water Tribes are in the North Pole. There is a small Water Tribe in the Foggy Swamp of the Earth Kingdom, though. Being in the North Pole and the South Pole helps a lot, though. There’s plenty of water to bend with all the ice that’s around. In the North Pole the buildings are made of ice.

“The Air Nomads lived in four different mountain peak temples in the North, South, east, and West of the world. The Fire Nation is a series of islands in the west, and the Earth Kingdom is the largest continent of land, and it’s in the east.”

A small chuckle left her lips before she spoke again. “No. You misheard. I said qi not gi. Qi like… the chee in cheese. It’s the life energy than runs through everyone’s body.”

Her eyes passed over his face when he closed his eyes. He looked so young when he was relaxed like that. His face was completely smooth, free of any blemish, and so fair he could have been mistaken for one whose spirit had left his body.

She looked at the bottle again, and sniffed it for second. It smelled sugary. The fizzing bothered her, but she figured the Planet wouldn’t hurt its patrons. At least she hoped as much. She put the open end to her lips at tipped it back. It fizzed wildly in her mouth, though the flavor was all right. Very sweet with a strange, dry after taste. The fizzing was too much for her, though. Katara had no idea what it was, but she didn’t want it, so she replaced it on the table just as Kadaj spoke.

Katara’s eyes shone pleasantly, and she nodded. “In my world, the moon and ocean spirits are a pair, continually circling one another for all time. The first waterbenders learned from the moon spirit how to push and pull the tides.

Laughing at the mention of cat owls, Kadaj thought he could relate to a creature that must also be a hunter. He decided it had been worthwhile venturing in here. At least he liked Katara. While magic abilities worked differently in her world, the concept behind such powers didn't seem foreign. He was quickly learning that other planets merely had their own way of spicing the flavour of universal truths.

"Too bad I can't see these cat owls," he said, vaguely surprised that he seemed to be conversing in a light, friendly manner, especially since he knew what remained in him of Sephiroth found bloodbending gruesomely fascinating. The Kadaj who had been in the Lifestream for however long had found it good to be not so seriously dark all the time.

Listening to her explain about the different types of benders, his pupils resumed a more human-looking shape. He nodded slightly.

"Qi," he repeated, saying it correctly and not like 'ghee'. "I understand about life energy because my planet has the Lifestream."

He nodded subtly and murmured "hnnn" under his breath. "So that's the moon spirit which made a girl's hair turn white?"

“If you can imagine it, I guess it has the head and tail of a feline and the body and wings of a bird. If they’re tame they make a decent house pet, or so I’ve heard.” Katara said, smiling. It really was too bad this planet didn’t have some of the animals her world contained. This world contained strange animals that only seemed to be… one type of animal. It was incredibly rare to find that in her world. The Earth King’s bear was the only one she ever really saw. “I wish I had a picture, I could show one to you.”

“The Lifestream?” Katara asked, a bit confused. “Is that like… qi that runs through your planet instead of running through the people?” Her eyes widened. “Maybe that’s what this planet has! Maybe a Lifestream is what powers it, and if we can find it…” She trailed off. What would they do if they found it? Cut it off? How would one go about blocking qi pathways in a planet? It wasn’t as simple as blocking pathways in a human the way Ty Lee and the Kyoshi Warriors could. Even then, cutting off the Planet’s qi could cut everyone off from getting what they needed. What if it killed the planet? The people would still be incapable of leaving this place. “Nevermind.”

“Yes, the very same Moon Spirit, only… not now. The Moon Spirit gave her life as a baby, so she could live, but five years ago someone from the Fire Nation killed the mortal form of the Moon Spirit. Yue had to give the life back, so the world wouldn’t fall out of balance. She’s the Moon Spirit now, at least in my world.”

Kadaj could easily imagine what the cat owl looked like and a smile tugged at his lips when he thought about the image in his mind. He fantasized what must be like to fly with a cat owl's wings. A slow, purposeful motion through the air very different from his battles, when he had leapt amazing heights or distances at incredible speed.

"The Lifestream qi lives in the planet and in us," he explained. "We come from it and return to it. It can be maniputated into other forms of energy but some say doing that is killing the planet. I don't think so; the spirits are too strong for that...." He looked thoughtfully perturbed for a moment. "I don't know what form of Lifestream this planet has. Has anyone actually communicated with the planet? That plague says something about asking its assistants but the only assistant I saw was this mute stone man. Why ask if they won't tell us? Is this world playing with us?"

Without thinking about it, his hand reached for the hilt of his sheathed sword, pulling it to his side and gripping it tightly inside his glove.

“In my world everything is alive and has its own qi. I don’t know if there’s just one major source of Lifestream, though. I think someone would have mentioned it if there was one main source. There is a Spirit World, and when people die they are often reincarnated. Only the Avatar is in tune with his past lives, though.” The waterbender spoke, thinking about Kadaj’s words as she did so.

“I think if you returned the manipulated Lifestream energy to the main source later, it shouldn’t be damaging to your planet.” Katara said thoughtfully. “Then again, your planet could be completely unlike mine.” She almost smiled as he began his barrage of questions once more- he had such an inquisitive mind- but his questions seemed to be making him restless, so the smile never appeared upon her lips.

“The only communication anyone has had with this place is the tablet and the golems. They will answer ‘yes’ and ‘no’ questions, but otherwise they’re silent. There’s no way to rectify this. If you want meaningful answers you must ask the right questions in the right way, or you won’t get anything helpful from them.” Her hand moved to lightly touch his gloved hand, a small pressure pressing against it, so he would know her hand was there. Her voice grew softer, comforting. “It will be all right, Kadaj. We’ll find the answers in time. I do think this World enjoys toying with us to some extent, but it’s just observing us. It wants our reactions. I believe it wants to witness our entire range of emotions.

“Look around you. Everyone is so different. Their reactions to each other and to this place are what it wants, and as living beings we need to go through our range of emotions to live. That’s why it’s pulled people with stories to tell, people with personalities that conflict and comfort and anger. We can’t help but appease it… for now.” Katara’s silver eyes gazed intently into his vibrant green optics, as if to say, for now we’ll appease it, but we’ll find a way out in time. Just give it time.

Katara didn’t want him to become angry and hurt someone with his sword. Perhaps she was still reeling a bit from her encounter with Vincent earlier than morning, but she felt protective of these people, these strangers from anything that might harm then.

Had he not been watching her closely, looking into her eyes the instant she touched him, Kadaj would have leapt back. His hand tremored and the cat slit eyes returned in a rush but he managed to listen. The waterbender had a totally different effect on him than meeting Anakin did. Where the Jedi made him feel wary, Katara was comforting quite like Aerith had turned out to be in the Lifestream. He much preferred her discussion of the Moon Spirit to Anakin's explanation of the Force, though he understand both.

When she spoke of looking around at all the different people, he continued to stare at her instead. He'd already been visually reconning the others. This was different, as if they exchanged not just information but a little bit of their spirits perhaps. Kadaj knew he'd never be quite the same and he didn't have to know why. It just was.

"How do you ask the right question in the right way, Katara?" His voice sounded calm and something that wasn't there before glowed in his eyes. But the hand still holding the sword hilt trembled again.

Katara continued to press her fingers against his gloved knuckles, even while his hand trembled. He was worked up, and she was trying her best to keep him calm, to keep him from doing anything drastic. She had no idea what he would do, but she knew it would be best for him and for all involved that he keep his sword sheathed.

As she spoke, her silver gaze continued to remain on his verdant eyes. Despite her suggestion, his stare remained trained on her. That was fine, though. It meant the waterbender had his attention. As long as his attention was on her, she knew he would listen.

When Kadaj asked his question, Katara shook her head and removed herself from his . “I don’t know yet, but I don’t think the golems ever lie. I think if there’s a way to ask them ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions that could lead to something. It’s like narrowing down the options, I suppose. They lead you where you need to be, too. I haven’t quite figured it out, but there has to be some way to get answers.” A small smile lifted the corners of her lips, and she gave his hand a light squeeze before removing it; however, she continued to watch him closely. “I know everything will be okay, though.”

He continued holding the hilt of Souba but he sighed and his body relaxed a little. His shoulders tilted back, opening up his posture so he lost that appearance of advancing on unknown enemies.

"I'll try asking them questions and see if I can find the way to learn something constructive. But they can't say what happens if I kill someone; it's not a yes or no kind of question," he conversed with his seemingly gentle demeanor. "Do you know what happens if someone is killed here? Perhaps an old enemy of mine will appear here." He waved his free right hand in the direction of all the others attending the party.

At this point, since he'd been stolen from the Lifestream to become so very physical again, Kadaj couldn't guarantee he might not attack... Cloud? Sephiroth? But Cloud had held him when he died while Sephiroth abandoned him and he had after all, been the truest son. His expression darkened with all the thoughts he couldn't tell.

Katara smiled softly as she felt his hand relax. She knew the rest of his body relaxed a little, too. That pleased her.

“You could try narrowing it down. Maybe you can ask about every way the Planet could hurt someone. Oh! I want to ask a golem this myself, but I was thinking it would be a good idea to ask them, ‘If you kill someone, will the Planet send you home?’ It’s a yes or no question, and if it says ‘No.’ you could ask a yes or no question about every way you think of.” It was just a suggestion. Katara felt a little silly admitting she wanted to ask a golem that question. Being sent home wasn’t much of a punishment for her. Maybe for Miguel it would be from the way he talked about how life in his world had been unsatisfactory.

Katara was a bit shocked with how nonchalant he spoke of killing another, killing an enemy. “I wouldn’t try it if I were you.” How could death be so… casual to someone? “The idea of killing someone doesn’t bother you at all?” She was appalled, yet some part of her was curious, too. This boy before her seemed so innocent and so young. He seemed unlikely to kill anyone, even a fly, yet he spoke of killing the same way one might speak of washing their clothing.

Nodding at her comments about asking the golems, he knew his thoughts had been put into motion to plan something in his subconscious. Right now he paid attention to her reaction about how he seemed to regard killing others. The shock was clearly evident in her beautiful eyes.

"I was created to fight and kill anyone who tried to stop us from achieving our goal," he decided to explain as basically as possible. If she cared to know more details later, he might tell her those too. He had a totally calm demeanor now and spoke gently. "Such was my life until I died and was taken into my world's lifestream. Let's say being there altered my ideas about certain beliefs but being there also made it clear nothing about dieing is to be feared."

Kadaj shook his head slightly, looking for words to explain further. "But now I'm alive again, aren't I? No, physical again... Maybe the only trouble with dieing is others who are still physical might miss you? I do miss my brothers...." A weird sort of emotion came over him, one of sadness that he rarely experienced. "Should I be content my brothers are still there? I mean, is it selfish if I didn't want that?"

Confusion filled Katara as she heard him speak of his purpose. Created? That was a strange way of putting it. “How can someone be ‘created’ as you put it, and what goal were your creators trying to achieve?” The waterbender was naturally curious about the lives of others, though not for the purpose of gossip. Her purpose was to learn more about the people themselves, how they worked, and why they did the things they did. “If you died and were taken into your planet’s Lifestream, how did you end up here? Were you reincarnated into this life you’re in now, or are you a spirit now?” Some spirits could make it so they weren’t simply something one could walk right through. You could touch them, and you could hit them with things. She remembered when Sokka had hit the Hei Bai Spirit with his boomerang. That had been a terrifying time, but, if Kadaj was a spirit, she wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t angry right now, though. Silver eyes flickered to his weapon. She would hate to see him angry.

“Maybe your planet is different than mine. I don’t want to leave those I care about. I love living. I know how hard it is to lose someone you love through death, and I don’t want my death to cause that for those I care about.” Katara was thinking of the loss of her mother. She knew if her father or her brother had to lose her, it would be like losing Kya all over again, only worse. Then they would be devoid of both. At least Sokka wasn’t a child any more. His wife would comfort him and take care of him.

Kadaj seemed to answer all of her questions, all of her thoughts. He was alive, not a spirit of which he was aware, and he missed those who had passed. “I think it is selfish to want someone here who has gone on to a better place, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I miss my mother every day, and now that I’m here, I miss my friends every day. I want them here, but at the same time I don’t want them to have to suffer through being in this prison, just like I wouldn’t want my mom to suffer through life when she could be happier wherever she is in death. For me, it goes both ways.”

Kadaj felt an angry impatience somewhere in him. So some of Sephiroth's will is still with me? he marvelled not for the first time. But it wasn't the same insane, soul-gutting fury as it had been. A part of his creator would always be there the same way parents gave children their genetic structure. And he'd live with it by merging his own growing personality with the foundation of his identity.

He looked thoughtful, lighting playing the fingers of his black glove over his pale face. "My creator, Sephiroth, was an experiment which merged a developing fetus with alien cells. But the so-called scientists were mistaken because they thought this creature was an Ancient, the original people on my planet." He said this clearly and softly, very much mimicking the way Aerith had revealed the real story to him. Except that he failed to pick up on the moments of gentle teasing she displayed even in the lifestream. But why should death change one's personality, unless they deliberately lost some of their memories in the stream? Kadaj had relinquished much of the fury but not the remembrance.

"Sephiroth grew up without being told and he became a very successful soldier, a name known to many. But.... when he found out people say he went insane. I think he went sane, or at least according to what the alien cells perceived, he went sane and had been mad before to not know how superior he was to everyone else." Kadaj wondered if Katara could grasp this part but he would finish his story. "He caused destruction and was determined to destroy all humans for having killed the Ancients thousands of years in the past. Sephiroth was mislead by the scientists' mistake of thinking the alien was a Cetra, or Ancient, you see." It occured to him that the real last of the Cetra, Aerith, helping him so much after his death was ironic. Their world would have been so different if Sephiroth had truly been part Ancient and Kadaj wouldn't exist.

"To make this short, Sephiroth was finally killed but he refused being assimilated into the Lifestream. He split into three who came back to the world to do his will. I was one of the three, Katara."

As he said this his pupils narrowed down but while listening to her talk about how she loved living, they gradually grew until they attained a human roundess. "I guess you're really talking about love. I doubt I know what that is because in one way, as far as my brothers and I were concerned, we always existed." He shrugged. "We just were and I've wondered if love doesn't grow from all the time you're together in the material world. It's more of an idea to me than anything else, I suppose."

Katara found she couldn’t quite like this Sephiroth person. He reminded her of the former Fire Lord and the hold that the Fire Nation had had on the world for one hundred years. It was odd to hear how easily Kadaj accepted all of this, and agreed that Sephiroth was right for doing what he had done, sane for doing it. When he admitted that he was one of three forms of the man, she was shocked. How could this boy, this boy who seemed so nice and even a bit innocent, be part of a destructive force that wanted to destroy mankind, one that didn’t care if lives were lost?

“I don’t really know what to say to that. There was a war in my world that last for one hundred years, and ended when I was fifteen. One nation tried to conquer the rest, and so many people were killed in the process. The Fire Nation was going to destroy the entirety of the Earth Kingdom before he was defeated. He did it for different reasons, though. Namely power. Like Sephiroth, he felt more powerful than any other person in the world, though.”

Katara thought about his words for a moment. A person who had never loved? “Maybe you’ve loved and you simply never realized it. Sometimes love can take a person by surprise. It’s one of those emotions that sort of creeps up on a person. I’m sure you’ll feel it, or suddenly realize when you’ve felt it.”

"How was the Fire Nation defeated?" Kadaj wondered. "And fighting the war in your world used the bending abilities instead of swords and guns? There was nothing like hand-to-hand combat?" His face revealed rapt interest at how different warfare was on other planets. Already he had seen variations of powers from Anakin but Kadaj liked Katara where he couldn't stand the Jedi knight.

As to the other topic of their talk, the opposite of war: "Is acceptance, no matter what happened before, love? If that's so, then I knew a soul in the Lifestream who loves everything. She was a real Ancient, the last of them." The fire for war left his eyes as he spoke of this and he could have been mistaken for an angel.
