Good Ending/Bad Ending meme
Do you get a happily ever after? Or a 'Rocks fall, everyone dies'? Why not both?

* Post your characters and set up two scenes. One with an ideal setting (They got what they always wanted, hit it big, became rich and famous, etc.) and one with a bad twist of events (They're homeless, everyone hates them, maybe they're even dying!).
* Others respond to one of the two settings (Or both in different comments, if they want!)
* Respond.
* ???
* Profit!!!

Just remember: no ending is set in stone, good endings can turn sour, and bad endings can be made better. Just see where it takes you and enjoy the ride!

Good ending
They'd done it. Not the whole world, but he wouldn't really have known what to do with the whole world even if they'd gotten it. They'd done it with the minimum amount of bloodshed, which had surprised him. He'd expected the humans would have put up more of a fight, it seemed to be what they did best, after all. They also weren't all extinct, not by half, but a truce had been reached, even a wary peace. It wasn't what he'd initially been after, but it would do, at least for the time being.
Right at that moment he was enjoying a glass of scotch and the view from his new office, halfway up one of the skyscrapers in downtown New York.

Bad ending
They'd lost, that day on the beach. Or close enough. Erik hadn't been quick enough and Shaw had managed to whisk him away again. The doctor didn't want him dead, even though he knew full well that Erik would kill him if given a chance.
No, he just wanted Erik back under his control. Broken. He as almost there, he'd nearly managed it in the weeks, months, nearly a year since The Showdown, since he'd had to go into hiding taking only his most loyal followers with him.
Erik had only gotten more resilient as he'd gotten older, which just made Shaw try harder, he'd gotten more inventive since the early days, and Erik got to enjoy the brunt of that experience.
Right then he was recovering from having his left arm flayed so that Shaw could get at the tendons for no other reason than he'd wanted to see them.

Charles wasn't sure what he thought to be honest. Not after everything he'd believed in had gone down the drain. It didn't help that Erik's views had been proven right. So right now he was sitting in one of the chairs and just staring into space. Hell, he still needed to get over the fact that there were less humans around than mutants. Or at least that's all he could feel with his mind.

So if and when Erik says something he actually doesn't notice. Or if he does he's spaced out enough not to hear him.

He hadn't said anything, and he didn't say anything as he crossed to Charles' chair, setting his glass on the edge of the desk so that he could knead at the telepath's shoulders, thumbs digging in against the back of his neck, "Penny for your thoughts?"

There's a soft groan out of the telepath the moment he felt those thumbs digging against the back of his neck. "...What?" Hey, he'd been spacing out a bit so he's got no clue what in the world the metal bender said.

He chuckled softly as he continued kneading at Charles' shoulders and nape, "Was just wondering what you were thinking, Charles, that's all." He wasn't always curious about what was on the telepath's mind, he had enough sense to know that he wouldn't always like it, but he had to check anyway.

"What're we really doing, Erik?" He asks idly. "I mean truly doing. None of this even really matters. You've made sure of that." It might upset the metal bender but he'd deal with that when and if it happened. "You're enjoying this show of power far too much."

"Because the show is what's important, Charles. The symbolism. You should know that as well as I do. People need their totems." He shook his head, fingers still kneading, "We're doing this because it's expected, it's what people need."

"No, Erik, the show isn't what's important. Or if anything it's only important to you." There's an almost pained laugh. "I'm not anyone's totem. I don't want to be anyone's totem nor am I anything anyone needs. Perhaps that's what you think but you've lost your way." That might upset the metal bender but he's been good at doing that lately.

Charles hadn't given up searching. For Shaw, for Erik. He wasn't going to leave him at the hands of that monstrous man. Hours and days spent in Cerebro, searching for both of them. Shaw was a clever man and never could be spotted in the same place twice. He kept Erik's mind as shielded as his own and Charles had absolutely no way of finding either of them.

Finally, he decided on a new tactic. He'd visited the white queen in prison, Emma Frost. Striking a deal with her, she would lead him to Shaw in exchange for him letting her disappear. He wasn't comfortable with it but considering how mutant kind was now being viewed in the public eye, he could understand why she would want to become invisible. So against his better judgement, he helped her escape and the two of them had tracked down Shaw at one of his hideouts.

Hopefully Erik would still be there by the time he could be rescued.

Erik hadn't given up hope either, not completely, but that last kernel of it had been buried deep, he knew better than to leave it anywhere that Shaw might see it. He'd given up on being rescued, yes, he had long since realized that this was something he'd have to do himself, but he had to wait for the opportune moment, and the longer he stayed, the less chance of an escape happening there was and he knew it.

So he was still there when the cavalry arrived, but finding him was going to be another story, the hideout wasn't large, but it was labyrinthine, especially in the lower levels where Shaw's test subjects were kept, and Erik was definitely one of those. Kept well and away from any plumbing or electrical wiring or anything else that he could use to his advantage.

Charles was relying on Emma to get him through the maze, being that she had been there before. Of course, that didn't preclude the possibility that Shaw had changed his security measures since the last time she was there. In fact, it was a near certainty that he had after he'd decided to leave Emma in prison instead of coming for her.

Something she was not happy about in the least. She may be keeping her thoughts to herself as much as possible, but Charles had a hunch this was more revenge against Shaw than helping him.

That and the fact she had offered to be the distraction while Charles went to rescue Erik. A helpful guard to manipulate and Charles was soon at the door of Erik's cell. He was going to have to move quickly, not knowing if there were video cameras watching this area. But he was keeping just out of sight behind the oblivious guard as he taps on the door a rhythm of Morse Code.

C-H-E-C-K. A chess reference. As in Charles is threatening the king of this establishment. He wants to make sure this is the right cell block.

Erik's brow furrowed at the sound, taking only a moment to work out what it meant, even with the lingering pain in his hand as a distraction. Pain was nothing new to him, he just had to remind himself of it sometimes. Even still it took him longer than it should to work out both the word and the meaning behind it, that tiny ember of hope that he'd buried flaring brightly to life again.

He'd never been that great at projecting his thoughts, much better at keeping them locked up, but he was sure as hell going to try now, because the worst case, as he saw it, was that there would be no response.

He didn't manage the other man's name so much as a wordless impression of him, a flicker of images and memories, inquisitive all the same, asking if he were actually there.

Charles smiles in relief at the faint impression back. It had been forever since Erik had disappeared, there had been a very good chance he was dead.

Keeping the guard frozen in place, he sends a message of his own. Hello, old friend...good to hear you again. He starts looking all around the door, looking for a way to get it open without setting off any alarms. I'm going to get you out of here.

There had been times when Erik was brought back to his room when he was incoherent from pain, where he couldn't make sense of anything, there were other times when he was more or less fine, and other times when he was half-blind or worse, but he was sure of one thing: The combination for the door never changed. He couldn't be sure now if this was stupidity on Shaw's part, or just something that the man hadn't thought would be a problem because the fortress was, supposedly, impregnable.

It was something that Erik had tried to make use of himself, but there was something between his side of the door and the outside that stopped him from using his powers to throw the lock from the inside, but now? Well, that had all changed.

Dresden. That he was able to get across as a word, mostly due to the fact that he had something to focus on beside the pain radiating from his hand all the way up his arm. The actual damage was just to his thumb, palm and wrist, but he could feel it halfway across his back.

The word was followed by 3737336. It was possible that the number had some other significance to Shaw, or perhaps it was just random, but that was the connection Erik had made between the two.

He was injured, though Charles couldn't be sure how badly from where he stood. There was also telepath dampening properties around this cell, the only reason he could reach Erik's mind now was because he was physically closer than if he was searching with Cerebro.

Charles frowns at the word and the numbers, considering the electronic keypad next to the door. He punches in the number combination, hoping that Erik was coherent about the information he was giving. If it went badly, he would be trying to break the door open with the guard's gun.

He was right, it seemed, since the latch popped open, releasing whatever seal held the door in place. For a bare moment Erik looked unsure, as if this might be some sort of trick, but relief followed hard and fast when he saw that it really was Charles there.

Erik had apparently been through hell and back at least once while he was here. Thinner than he had been, almost distressingly so, but while Shaw had wanted him broken, he'd also needed Erik strong enough to survive whatever he decided to do to the man that day, which meant that he had to be kept fed. There were scars up both arms, and a bruise on his jaw, another, older one high on his cheek, vanishing into his hairline, "Charles."

Charles steps in, taking in Erik's appearance. "Erik. You look...absolutely awful." His smile is cheeky but still worried. His friend had been cruelly used, that much was certain. "I don't doubt I've looked worse." He replied, voice rough from some combination of disuse and being worn from screaming. He'd all but refused to talk the whole time he was here, one of the few things he could do that needled at Shaw. Erik hadn't been above staging what small rebellions he could.

It was a moment more before he nodded at the question, levering himself to his feet, keeping his injured arm close against his side, "I think walking is even doable, though running may be out of the question." He didn't have that kind of energy. His brow furrowed a moment later, "Who's with you?" Because he couldn't imagine Charles would mount a rescue operation like this alone.

Charles pulls a large handkerchief out of his pocket and works quickly to make a sling for Erik's arm, inspecting the hand carefully to see how badly he's injured.

"Walking might do the trick, I wasn't entirely sure what state I would find you in..." He loops the uninjured arm of Erik's over one of his shoulders to help him to the door, keeping his other hand to his temple to keep the nearby guards unaware of their presence.

And also ignoring the question put to him, he's not sure how Erik would take to him colaborating with Emma. He's not too thrilled about it himself.

There was a tidy row of stitches along either side of his wrist, one of them running most of the way up his thumb, and another running perpendicular between them, the skin had been peeled away and put back. Shaw was nothing if not precise.

If Erik noticed the lack of an answer, he didn't mention it, just nodded at the statement, "Today's a good day." One of the better ones, all in all, he was coherent and cognizant and could move under his own power, it counted as a good day.
