Good Ending/Bad Ending meme
Do you get a happily ever after? Or a 'Rocks fall, everyone dies'? Why not both?

* Post your characters and set up two scenes. One with an ideal setting (They got what they always wanted, hit it big, became rich and famous, etc.) and one with a bad twist of events (They're homeless, everyone hates them, maybe they're even dying!).
* Others respond to one of the two settings (Or both in different comments, if they want!)
* Respond.
* ???
* Profit!!!

Just remember: no ending is set in stone, good endings can turn sour, and bad endings can be made better. Just see where it takes you and enjoy the ride!

He was right, it seemed, since the latch popped open, releasing whatever seal held the door in place. For a bare moment Erik looked unsure, as if this might be some sort of trick, but relief followed hard and fast when he saw that it really was Charles there.

Erik had apparently been through hell and back at least once while he was here. Thinner than he had been, almost distressingly so, but while Shaw had wanted him broken, he'd also needed Erik strong enough to survive whatever he decided to do to the man that day, which meant that he had to be kept fed. There were scars up both arms, and a bruise on his jaw, another, older one high on his cheek, vanishing into his hairline, "Charles."

Charles steps in, taking in Erik's appearance. "Erik. You look...absolutely awful." His smile is cheeky but still worried. His friend had been cruelly used, that much was certain. He reaches to put a hand on his shoulder as if to reassure he was real enough. "I think you are overdue for a jail break. Can you stand?"

"I don't doubt I've looked worse." He replied, voice rough from some combination of disuse and being worn from screaming. He'd all but refused to talk the whole time he was here, one of the few things he could do that needled at Shaw. Erik hadn't been above staging what small rebellions he could.

It was a moment more before he nodded at the question, levering himself to his feet, keeping his injured arm close against his side, "I think walking is even doable, though running may be out of the question." He didn't have that kind of energy. His brow furrowed a moment later, "Who's with you?" Because he couldn't imagine Charles would mount a rescue operation like this alone.

Charles pulls a large handkerchief out of his pocket and works quickly to make a sling for Erik's arm, inspecting the hand carefully to see how badly he's injured.

"Walking might do the trick, I wasn't entirely sure what state I would find you in..." He loops the uninjured arm of Erik's over one of his shoulders to help him to the door, keeping his other hand to his temple to keep the nearby guards unaware of their presence.

And also ignoring the question put to him, he's not sure how Erik would take to him colaborating with Emma. He's not too thrilled about it himself.

There was a tidy row of stitches along either side of his wrist, one of them running most of the way up his thumb, and another running perpendicular between them, the skin had been peeled away and put back. Shaw was nothing if not precise.

If Erik noticed the lack of an answer, he didn't mention it, just nodded at the statement, "Today's a good day." One of the better ones, all in all, he was coherent and cognizant and could move under his own power, it counted as a good day.

Charles keeps them behind the guard, using him as best as he can to shield them from any cameras as he marches the man back the way they had come. "I suspect it's harder to get out of this place than to get in," he says in a low voice as they move through zig-zag corridors.

He nodded at that assessment, replying, "He let me get all the way outside, once." Apparently Erik hadn't just sat idle, waiting for whatever Shaw would come up with next, "After that is when he moved me down here." He shook his head, "There's nothing out there, not for miles." He wasn't even sure what country they were in, all he knew was that it had been snow as far as he could see, and the kind of cold that locked up a person's lungs, made breathing painful.

"Well now...there's a pretty fast snowmobile out there we can use." It was how he and Emma got close enough to the facility.

Just then, the alarms start sounding off and Charles gives the guard a shove as he falls unconscious to the ground. "Ok, that's our cue!" He pulls Erik along with him towards the exit as fast as he can.

He stumbled, just for a moment, but caught his balance easily enough, keeping pace with the other man, "He's been building an army." Even Erik wasn't entirely sure how, since he knew Shaw didn't trust anyone but himself, really.

"I hope you remember the way out of here." Erik had been moved from one cell to another often enough that he would be lost if he tried to get out, he knew because it had happened at least once.

"A...mutual friend let me know how to get in." He suspected Emma was with Shaw now, but if she was helping or hindering, he couldn't be sure.

An explosion suddenly rocks the facility, the shockwaves reaching them and tearing big cracks in the walls. Charles tries to keep their collective footing to keep them moving forward and avoid the chunks of ceiling that are starting to come down on them. "Run for it! It's coming down!"

Erik wasn't as quick on his feet as he used to be, but the threat of being buried alive was more than enough to motivate him, keeping pace with Charles easily enough, "You got in, but can you get out?"

He yelped, twisting then to shoulder Charles out of the way, a narrow miss for another chunk of steel reinforced concrete.

"I hadn't planned on Shaw blowing up his entire--...!"

The next explosion is big enough to throw them off their feet. They're so close to the door outside, one can see he snow. But the building is starting to come down around them and Charles just went under a mound of broken rocks. Keep going! he urges Erik, almost forcing him with a mental command to go for the door while he tries to crawl out.

"Like hell." He replied, turning back around managing to brace himself on the nearest wall, or at least what was left of it. It only took him a moment to figure out which of the pieces would be the most detrimental to Charles' escape, feeling out the rebar in the rubble.

Strictly speaking, he knew he didn't have to use his hands for control, but after so long having his powers dampened, he wasn't entirely sure he could. There was a grimace, feeling the stitches in his thumb tear as he moved, jaw tight as he bore down with his full focus, yanking the rubble away piece by piece, heedless of the rest that was coming down around them both.

Charles feels the pile over him give just enough and starts crawling towards daylight. He's covered in dirt and dust but still whole as far as he can tell. He staggers to his feet as another shockwave rocks the facility and grabs Erik's arm to pull him towards the exit and into the snow. "Go!!"

They get out just as the whole place blows up in a fireball behind them, the two of them sliding down the ridge of snow into a bank.

He was battered and he was bleeding and he was the near side of exhausted, but right at that moment he didn't care. Because aside from being exhausted, bleeding and battered, he was free and that was more important.

Of course, he was also cold, damp and bordering on hysterical, but he'd manage to rein himself in soon enough.

Charles struggles to his feet, a little disoriented from all the noise but he hurries to make sure Erik is ok. A hand to his neck before trying to help him to sit up. "Got you, it's ok, we're out." His mind nudging at Erik's to try and get him to respond. Erik? You in there? Stay with me, ok? Say something...or think something. He could work with either.

He was laughing, high and wild, but he managed to pull it back after a moment, especially in the face of Charles' concern. Nodding at the string of questions, not trusting his voice again just yet. He staggered to his feet before long, using Charles for support as he did so.

Charles can understand the hysterics after being pulled out of a place like that. But he knows once they wear off, Erik is going to crash and soon. So he pushes them on towards the snowmobiles, limping slightly on a twisted ankle. "Not much farther, almost there."

With everything he'd already been through that day, it was a wonder he was even upright, let alone mostly coherent. He just nodded, helping support Charles even as the other man was supporting him.

Any other time and place, they would likely have been mistaken for a pair of drunks on the way home, but here and now? They likely looked like exactly what they were: the only survivors of a veritable apocalypse.

A slow clapping sound stops Charles in his tracks. He frowns, his heart going cold at what he saw.

Shaw was standing...no leaning against their snowmobiles as if he owned them, giving them a golf worthy applause at their escape. "Well done, gentleman." Emma was nearby, trying to look like the henchman she wasn't. The bruise on her cheek was evidence that she had been forcefully re-employed by Shaw and had to pull a triple cross.

The sense of triumph Erik had been holding onto just moments before plummeted into something bordering on actual despair. He froze when he saw the other man, like a rabbit that had just spotted the shadow of a hawk.

It was not a good look for him, that sort of fear, it was jarring and out of place.

Shaw puts his hands back to lean on the snowmobile, an almost sad expression for Erik. "You thought he'd come to rescue you. How sweet. You should know by now nobody leaves till I say so."

He's got his helmet on so Charles can't get anywhere with his mind. His grip tightens on Erik's arm, not willing to give up just yet. "Don't listen to him, Erik." Even though he knows those snowmobiles are the only way out of this place. If Shaw wants, he could leave them there to freeze to death in the frozen wasteland of Russia. More likely, he was going to kill one or both of them before that happens.

Erik was tense under Charles' hand, vibrating like a live wire, as if he were ready to pounce at a moment's notice. Though he knew better, from experience, that jumping Shaw wouldn't just get him nowhere, but actually somewhere less than nowhere.

His mind, however, was in overdrive, scrabbling to come up with a plan, he had the seed of an idea, but he couldn't be sure if it would work, and for all of them to get out of this alive the timing would have to be perfect.

He eased forward a half-step, tugging free from Charles' grasp on his arm, his voice was still more than a little rough, but it was audible and clear, "I'll stay. Just let Charles go."

In that moment he knew exactly how this would have to play out. They'd need to sacrifice one of the snowmobiles to their cause, but it was a small price to pay. If he could move fast enough, and he knew he could, he could trap Shaw with the frame of the vehicle he was lounging against, Emma, since she was closest, would have to get the helmet off of him, and he knew she could move quickly enough to do so, he'd seen her in action after all, which meant that Charles would have to freeze the other man as soon as he had the chance to.

In other words, they were going to have to work together, like clockwork, as if they'd practiced it a thousand times. Images, he knew, were easier to project than words, and he'd given both Emma and Charles the same sequence, he just had to believe they could actually pull it off.

At first, Charles can't believe what Erik says, "No, Erik. Don't." He couldn't let him give himself up for Charles. But as the images and plan filter in on him and Emma, he gives Erik a quick nod to say he's on board with this idea. He pretends to still be shocked, reaching a hand to Erik's shoulder as if that might keep him from stepping closer to Shaw.

"And why should I do that? He's the one that broke in after all and ruined a perfectly good hideout." Shaw, of course, would rather see his favorite student humbled once again before he even considers agreeing to letting Charles go. Did he say go? Shaw might decide to keep both of them. He taps his helmet as Charles has two fingers to his temple. "Not having any luck, Charlie? Too bad. For all your power, you telepaths are quite predictable."

He shook Charles' hand off, taking another step forward, closing the distance between himself and Shaw, but still staying out of arm's reach, cringing inwardly at the man's words, but keeping his voice steady, "Because I'm the one you want. It's always been me, hasn't it? The one that got away."

The frame of the snowmobile had crimped even before he brought his hand up, and he was surprised that Emma had moved almost before the first pings of overstressed metal, he hadn't even had to signal her, which didn't surprise him, it seemed that she had a better self-preservation instinct than he did.
