[She doesn't want to think about it too much. She's not sure how he feels about her. It would all be easier if she could be secure in a friendship or even secure in some kind of dislike, but then not being able to keep any kind of even keel or get a good read on him were problems that led to the downfall of their relationship, so it's not shocking that they'd still be in the way of friendship.]

Should I ask what you imagined or does it just take us to the sad place?

[This is better. It has to be. Things were so hard like they were. They were months of too hard even with days and even weeks that stood out as better. Even with that damn pink pearl making her falsely happy it was still a hard time because it contrasted so sharply with the good times before it. Back home was hard in different ways that were more physical. There was a lot of stress and strain and not enough to eat or enough sleep and too much fighting. Of course you were seeing horrors but they were wall to wall horrors. You became numb to it because you had to. There was so little peace or beauty or softness left. Everything became a sort of cold gray and you persisted, but you weren't living a full life with all the colors. After losing Reid it was like she could see the colors but they just weren't in her reach anymore and the harder she chased them the further away they got. And now she's with Chekov and maybe things are just a little muted, but they are full color again— getting more vibrant all the time.]

No sad place. [She squeezes back.] And today was better than last time. We're trending upward.
