Well, frak.

"Hello, Martha." Even though his smile isn't insincere, his crossed arms betray unease. "I... um. I can't say that I understand today's Earth holiday, but the bots' instructions are pretty clear."

"Felix." Well that body language says a lot. Martha keeps her distance while she explains. "Mistletoe is a plant grown on Earth. I don't know where the tradition comes from, but at our midwinter holiday, people hang mistletoe from the ceiling, and when two people are under it, they kiss. The bots... that's prison centric."

She steps forward when the barrier bumps her.

"Don't worry. You're not the first uneasy person I've had to kiss today." She lifts up to her toes, balancing herself by placing a hand on his crossed arms. She meets his eyes for a moment before planting a soft, quick kiss on his lips.

"We have it in the Colonies, too. Had. I guess no one ever thought to use it as an excuse to kiss." Not that it matters. It's something to say, though, before Martha takes the initiative to break the barrier. The bot, evidently satisfied with a quick kiss, showers them with confetti and goes off to make someone else's life awkward.

He immediately feels guilty for being standoffish, both in the present and in the fake future that the wardens showed to them. Before Martha has a chance to leave, he relaxes his hands to her shoulders and kisses her. Fairly quick and chaste, but not bot-motivated.

The second kiss catches her by surprise. She reciprocates because, well, it's a kiss. It's hard not to. But she steps back when it's over, breaking all physical contact.

"What was that for?"

And while she's smiling, her tone suggests uncertainty.

He's almost as surprised as she is, and her question is a good one to which he doesn't have a ready answer.

"It's--I didn't want you to think that kissing you was a chore. Sorry."

Martha laughed. "It's bot-induced mistletoe day. I think we can fairly say most of the kisses today are a chore. If for no other reason than it's just an interruption to the natural flow of the day."

"It's definitely that," he agrees, brushing confetti off of his shoulders. "I'm surprised by how well almost everyone's taking it. I know this isn't the first time it's happened, but still..."

Martha laughed. "This is my fourth Mistletoe bots. It seems my choices are to rail against it or take it as just another day in prison. It's easier to just deal with it."

"Fourth..." He shakes his head. "I hope I'm not here long enough to be trapped in that many force fields by that many robots."

"I think just about everyone feels that way. As it looks right now, we just have to wait for them to break down. Which will happen apparently."

"Maybe. I wouldn't trust that preview of the future."

"Oh there's plenty to not trust. Plenty of things can change the future. Machinery breaking down though? That's a fairly safe assumption."

"There's machinery keeping us alive in here, right?" And if that thought isn't terrifying, then he doesn't know what is. "I'd bet on that breaking down before anything virtual does, unless whoever programmed all of this is deeply invested in realism."

Damn. She didn't think that through did she. "Right... well now I have one more thing to keep me up at night. On that note, I think I'd better go before we find some other existential crisis to worry about. Or we get caught by another bot."
