[He will track her down, both for explanations and for baked goods.]

Yes, I'm doing very well. Happily married, and I have good friends like you. [There isn't a lot of conviction there.]

We really don't have a lot to complain about, do we? [ Except a few things but she's let go of that particular heartbreak some time ago. Also, don't think she isn't hearing that lack of conviction, countering it with a quirked brow. ]

Nothing at all. [He frowns at that expression of hers.] What? I'm not complaining, this is fine.

Fine isn't the same thing as good, Pavel. [ C'mon, tell mama your troubles. ]

[If she insists. It just seems so petty to regret all of this when he has every reason to be happy.]

I was going to be a starship captain by thirty, then an admiral by forty. That was my plan. That was everything that I wanted.

[ She nods. Can relate to this, sort of. ] I wanted to see the world. Have kids - not that I don't love you guys but it's not the same as having a baby.

I think it's okay to be upset about the things we didn't get to do. It doesn't have to take away from the good things we do have here.

You would have been a good mother. [He gives her a quick hug because hugging is just a thing he does with people he likes. Are they handling hot beverages? He'll be careful.] Which would be necessary since Ton would be a questionable father. [He's joking! Half joking.]

You're right, of course. There are things here that would have been unattainable at home.

[ Yeah, they do need hugging. Careful, non-scalding hugs. ] Hey, he would've been a great dad. [ Unless he got ideas about dying their children blue. ]

We can't have it all, so why not be happy with what we have? That's what I'm thinking. Either way, I want to be happy.

He would have been an interesting dad. More fun than mine. [Andrei Chekov would never even entertain the notion of dying his son blue. Lame.]

Have you heard the Russian saying, "There is nothing to eat, but life is good"?

Mmn I don't think I have. Unless you've told me and I forgot. What does it mean?

I have said so many of them that I can't remember. This one means that if you can comment on the misery of your current situation, then you still have the good fortune of being alive. Similar to what you said [in spirit?] and the same as what I keep forgetting.

I like that. [ Genuinely. It fits well with her own personal philosophy. ] I think I need it stitched onto something.

[Chuck would make a decent Russian. She's good at accepting terrible things as an inevitable part of life.]

A tablecloth, maybe. When the table is empty, you can take it as an opportunity to be grateful instead of as a sign to cook dinner.

Oh, that's not a bad idea! I was just thinking about how I need a new hobby.
