Hm... I do like entertaining social commentary. Maybe I'll give her a chance.

[There are times when he feels bad for Martha. She's clearly after something beyond what's available in the prison. There are even times when he wonders if he should propose something more exclusive--after all, neither of them are going anywhere--but he can't bring himself to.]

I don't know. A walk with a beautiful, intelligent woman who undoubtedly has some knowledge about alien anatomy to share... that sounds diverting enough.

Let me know what you think if you ever get around to her.

[It was a constant battle, to want something even though she knew better. Look what it did to Jack and Ianto. Or seemingly all the other middle age couples here. Strong emotional ties weren't worth the heartbreak that would inevitably come. Too bad her heart said differently. Martha ignored it time and again.]

Well when you put it that way...

[Martha tucks the two books under one arm and loops her free arm through his.]

Which park did you have in mind?

You'll be the first person to read my book report.

[When trapped with the same people in a relatively small prison for an indefinite amount of time, it's important to keep relationships tidy and emotions in check. Sometimes it's not the most satisfying way to live. It'll do, though.

He does the same with his book and off they go, arm in arm.]

TvÄ? They're all the same anyway, and I'm more interested in the company than the scenery.

Oh! A book report! I'll have to get my red pen ready.

[She chuckled, and nodded to his suggestion of Tva. The parks haven't been nearly as exciting as they used to be. She supposed it was no different than if she had lived in the same house all her life, except then there was the possibility of leaving if she felt like it. Here, there was none.]

You keep putting me up on that pedestal. I fear one day I shall not live up to your impression of me, and then you'll be sorely disappointed.

You should. I might've been serious when I said I'd write one.

[It's hard to find anything outside of the other prisoners exciting here, but at least the parks are still beautiful. If something is going to be boring, it might as well be pleasant about it.]

I think I know you well enough by now to keep my impression of you realistic.

I'd argue with you, but you're right. I think just about everyone here... we know each other better than our families know us.

[Oh that's a depressing thought. Good job Martha.]

Everyone here has an advantage over my family. They've been radioactive dust for a couple decades. [It's true, but it's also delivered as a joke. Inappropriately dark humor has been an important part of the grieving process.]

I don't remember you talking about yours much. [Which doesn't seem odd even though it probably should.] You must miss them.

Martha smiles faintly.]

Oh. My family. They were... they were something. Mum and Dad split when I was young and they were always fighting. I was the family peacemaker.

Mum wasn't so happy when I traveled with the Doctor I remember. And they were captured when the Master took over. Things turned out... all right in the end. Brought us all together in a way nothing had before.

Most parents probably aren't too happy when their kids go off to travel through time and space with an alien. That's good, though... that something good came of them being captured. Nothing like danger to bring a family together.

Did you have any siblings?

Mmmm.... [All these years later and Martha still isn't a fan of discussing the Paradox.]

Two siblings. Older sister Tish and younger brother Leo. What about you?

[That sure sounds like an invitation to not pursue that topic. Siblings it is!]

Two sisters... Caprice was three years older, Allegra was three years younger. Were Tish and Leo still around when you came here?

You're a middle child too! How'd that work out for you?

They were. Leo had a girlfriend and a daughter. Cute little girl. Wonderful niece. I spoiled her. Last I saw Tish... I couldn't tell you what she was doing.

You know how it is, being in the middle. You don't get the respect that the oldest gets and you can't get away with murder like the baby can. [Words aside, he's smiling. He can't really complain about his childhood.]

I had a niece, too. Felicia. I didn't see her much, but when I did I'd spoil that kid rotten, hand her back to her mom, and make a run for it. Your niece would be in her... what, mid-twenties now?

[She laughed.] I don't know that I ever pictured you as the spoiling type. Sounds like you were the perfect uncle. Keisha would be... yeah. Mid twenties. Man, I wonder what she ended up doing. She had the whole world ahead of her. I like to think she became a doctor after her Aunt Martha. Or... I don't know. Became a world class engineer or cured cancer?

Believe it or not, I kind of like kids. [This is his deepest, darkest secret, Martha. Now you know.] Well... since she's your niece, I don't think that curing cancer is entirely out of the question.

Do you now? I really wish I could see you surrounded by children. I bet you'd tell them wild stories.

Well... the really wild stories would be reserved for the ones I didn't have to live with. I wouldn't want to give kids I'm stuck with any ideas.

That's when you hand them off to mom and dad and duck out, yeah?

[She giggled.]

It works after you give them too much sugar too.

Exactly.

[He grins and shakes his head.]

See, you know all of the tricks. Obviously neither of us should be trusted around kids.

Fade? I'm running out of things to say and I've left this too long.
