[ He follows along like a shy child, taking a seat with his shoulders hunched and head bowed. This is okay, but he can't stop feeling exposed in public, out of the safety of his apartment. ]

At least we have that. [ He shifts his weight, thinking about something. ] Do you think they knew how to send us home?

[Martha pursed her lips.]

I go back and forth on that. Pulling people from other universes is hard. And it's very difficult to send people back through without causing complications. There's a very good chance that they only have the ability to pull us here and not put us back.

At the same time, they seem to feel that our crimes deserve a life sentence. So it's also very possible they just refuse to send us back.

[Yes Reid, she has given it a lot of thought. She just hasn't settled on a conclusion.]

[ That's a relief but also not. It sounds like she's right, like maybe they don't even need a way to send them home if they never intended to from the beginning and now no one knows how to properly operate it beyond the simulation and the life support and they're going to die here, aren't they? They're going to die.

He fidgets, starts tearing off little pieces of a napkin laying on the table just to have something to focus on. ]

You're probably right. Why would they even think of sending us back?

But I can't rule out the possibility that they don't have the technology. It all really depends on my mood which one I feel is a possibility on any given day.

[She watches him tear up the napkin and wishes she could help. In the end, she picks up a napkin for herself and starts folding it into a paper boat.]

[ He nods again. ]

I guess it doesn't really matter. We're stuck here either way.

[Martha glances up from her napkin for just a moment. Not long enough to full on stare at him, but enough to evaluate.]

It seems so.

[She goes back to folding and sighs heavily. She's so tired of pretending to be fine with everything all the time.]

There's only so many ways one can find meaning in one's life when they're stuck in prison.

Nothing matters. We're just waiting it out at this point.

[ He's sick of waiting. ] Martha... do you ever... do you ever consider..?

[Martha glances at him out of the side of her eye as he stammers his incomplete question. Deep down, she's pretty sure she knows what he's asking, but she doesn't want to assume anything.]

Do I ever consider...?

[ He draws a breath, tries to rephrase it but there's no way out of how depressing this is. ]

I don't know how much longer I can be here.

Things are that bad for you, Reid?

You've tried every other option available to you?

How many options do I really have here? [ Did he miss something? He's tried to be content and he's tried to fight his way back home and between the two, he's ruined. ]

Have you tried medication? Has there been a way to even get medication you would need?

Reid, I'm not saying it's out of the question. I'm asking if you've exhausted all other options first.

I don't even think I can get a reliable diagnosis here. Nothing is real. How can I be sure that there's something wrong with me when it could just as easily be something wrong with the rest of the world?

[ His voice is tight, nervous. Reminds him too much of how his mom talks when she's agitated. ]

It would be reliable to the reality we're in right now. This projection. In reality we've no idea what your body is doing. Have you tried the hospital?

And, on the subject of the other matter, have you considered the fact that it might not be... permanent? Since it would only be your projection you're affecting?

[Yes, this was really depressing.]

Of course I've tried the hospital. [ He hears how agitated he sounds just a bit too late, takes a moment to release some of the tension. It's not her fault. ] It'd be fine if I was just disconnected. You're right, there's no telling what my body is doing. We could just- cut the connection.

[Martha doesn't react to his outburst. She impassively waits for him to calm down and focuses instead on his comments.] And have you a way to cut the connection?

No... but how hard can it be? We used to lose people that way all the time. [ He's getting desperate. ]

[Martha moves to place a hand on his but thinks better of it halfway through. Her intent is to calm him, but it might heighten his anxiety. She reaches for her glass instead. Long ago she took an oath to do no harm, but she wonders more and more just what that means.]

If you're absolutely certain this is the direction you want to go... I'll see what I can do to help.

[ Coming from her, he might accept it but it's probably for the best to err on the side of caution. Most days, he's not sure how he'll react to things. ]

Really? [ Eyes wide, he looks at her. Didn't expect that. ] You'd really do that?

I... It's just... Things are different here. Back home, well... there's options. We could get you proper medical attention. But... but we don't have a mental health unit here. Or medication... and... and I swore to do no harm, but what if someone's suffering so bad...?

[She frowns as she tries to put her thoughts in order.]

Yes. If you felt there was no other way for you to make it through, I'd help you.

[ He releases a shuddering breath of relief, as if he's been holding his breath for years and in a way that's exactly what he's been doing. Okay. She can help. She can fix this. ]

Thank you. Thank you. [ He presses a hand over his eyes, although the way his shoulders shake probably give away that he's crying. ]

[Martha did reach out and lay a hand on his shoulder this time. There wasn't anything else to say. Not today. This was what he wanted, and Martha was going to help him and damn the consequences.]
