[Duo wasn't great at picking out vegetables, though he usually got decent ones. But he was really good at picking out meat.]

I'll grab the chicken and meet you in the produce aisle.

[Duo did almost all his cooking by experimentation and memory. It usually worked out okay with the occasional flop, but he wasn't into researching and reading and all that. He wasn't really a strong reader, either, though that was more because he lacked the formal schooling and just never really worked on learning. He could do well enough as it was, and that was fine by him.]

Alright. See you there.

[They had similar educational backgrounds - or lack thereof. Nico decided a while back that he wanted to know what he had missed, and started attending more classes. And when there were no classes for what he wanted to learn, he found someone to teach him anyway.

[He already has an idea of what he wants, so it doesn't take long to pick out the carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower, and make sure there's enough for two.

[And when Duo arrives with the chicken, he motions for the exit.]
This is good, unless you need anything else.

[Duo had thought about it, but he was too restless to sit in a classroom for a long time, so he tended to avoid it.

He shook his head.]

Nah, this'll be good.

[Though, he had grabbed a bottle of cherry cola before returning to meet with Nico. He started walking.]

What have you been up to? Haven't seen you in a few days.

[Nico matched his stride as they left the store.]

More of the usual. I've been trying to spend more time with the family, when I'm not busy with self-appointed responsibilities. You?

[Duo nodded, maybe a little jealous that Nico had found himself a family. Sure, Duo had his buddies, but he wasn't sure he'd consider anyone really family outside of Trowa and Quatre. He'd come close a few times with people, but always tended to get a little nervous when things got too intense.]

I guess the same. Catching up with friends and stuff. It's been relatively quiet lately.

That's a good thing. [A day without glitches was a day to celebrate.] Seeing anyone?

Not really. Just hanging out with friends an' stuff. It's all good. Not many new people around to test the waters with anymore now.

[He shrugged.]

I don't mind so much.

Mm. [He agrees with a nod.] Options are pretty limited here.

[He didn't mind so much either. Sure, it would be nice, but why worry about what you can't have?]

Yeah. [He shrugged a little.] No biggie, though, I guess. I'm still not really into the whole settling down thing. [He had finally figured out a little bit as to why he was apparently a commitment-phobe, but he hadn't really shared that breakthrough with anyone.]

It's overrated. [Though not really. His parents were happy. There were other couples that managed it.

He lets Duo into his apartment. It's mostly clean, though he crashed on the couch last night and his clothes are scatters over the furniture. Unconcerned, he kicks a shirt to the side as he makes for the kitchen.]

Make yourself at home. I'll get the food started.

A lot of people think so.

[He chuckled a bit, not surprised by the state of Nico's place. Duo wasn't much neater, though most of his clutter was related to his latest tinkering project. He hadn't given that up.]

You want some help makin' it?

If you want. Don't feel obligated. [The recipe is already out on the counter, so all he has to do is gather up everything he needs and get to it.

He pauses to frown at the ingredients list.]

Actually. Does this say two tablespoons, or five?

[Duo had been about to flop on the sofa, but wandered into the kitchen at Nico's question. Right. He'd caught on a few times to that, but never pressed Nico about it. He leaned over to look.]

That's a 2.

[He considered something for a moment.]

How about I measure, and you put it together?

[It was a casual statement, just an offer.]

[It wasn't a secret, but also not something he felt needed to be common knowledge. For the most part, he'd learned how to cope. And he wasn't ashamed to ask for help.]

Right. Makes sense. [Five seemed excessive for paprika.

He smiles gratefully at Duo.]

That would be great. Thanks. All the measuring cups and spoons are in the second drawer.

Right.

[Duo grinned and pulled out what he needed, then got to work on measuring. As he did, the recipe seemed like it was going to be pretty good. It was simple, but not bland, that was for sure.]

This sounds like it might be a good one. Have you made this before?

No. First try. Which means it's probably going to be a mess.

[That's just how it was with him. Unless it was something simple, like stir fry, most recipes took a few tries before he figured them out.]

So, thank you for helping out.

Yeah, sure. Any time.

[Duo didn't mind. He always felt a little weird just sitting around when someone did all the cooking or something during a get together. So, this was cool.]

It's kinda like being one of those fancy TV chefs, right? Everything's pre-measured for ya.

I certainly don't mind.

Hm. [He knocks his hip against Duo, his smile shifting into more of a smirk.] Hand me the spices for the breadcrumbs, would you?

Sure thing.

[He grinned back and handed him the different pre-measured spices, one at a time. He got close, leaning over Nico's shoulder to watch. He was curious.]

[There wasn't much to it. He chose a simple recipe on purpose. He rolled the chicken through eggs and crumbs, smirk settling into a gentle smile. While he was content on his own, there was something pleasant about being with someone, mingling in each others' space. He accidentally-on-purpose leans back against Duo as he finishes placing the chicken in a pan, nudging to to the sink to get the gunk off his hands.]

Toss that in the oven? Then all we have to do is wait.

[Duo didn't move away as Nico leaned on him. It was something he didn't mind, definitely, and he liked being close to Nico. They'd come pretty far, even if they kept an open relationship. It was casual, no strings attached, and comfortable.

He nodded, shifting as Nico nudged him so the other could wash his hands.]

Got it.

[He slid the pan in, closing the oven behind him, then glanced at the recipe for the suggested time. He set the timer as Nico finished washing up.]

There we go.

You still play cards?

[Duo grinned. Nico was one of the few who could give him a run for his money (if they had money) in poker. Duo had used being a little hustler at times to cheat people out of money so he didn't have to steal to eat once in a while. People tended to underestimate kids.]

Thanks.

[He dried his hands on a towel, tossed it aside.]

Of course I still play. There's a deck in the drawer of the coffee table. [And more decks scattered all around. Cards were fairly universal, he found, and something he (amazingly) never tired of.

He's already moving around the bar dividing the kitchen from the common area.]
Fancy a game?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]devine_braid
2017-02-22 06:41 am UTC (link)
Sure.

[He headed that way, grabbing the particular deck that Nico mentioned, and started shuffling it.]

I promise I won't count cards this time.

[He grinned a little.]
