[ Garden/farm ]

[ He thought there'd be more to life than this. He figured by the time he reached 44, if he ever did, he would've settled down, gotten married, had some kids and here he is, at 44, not married with no kids, still doing the same shit he did at 24 just to pass the time. The gardening plot has spread over the years, swallowing up most of the community garden until it's self-sufficient enough to support a small community with fresh vegetables and fruit. He spends most of his time here, returning to his very empty apartment to shower and sleep.

He's older, thicker around the middle, hair graying at the temples, skin darkening into that perpetual tan that comes with being outside every waking day. Still got a beard, still smokes on occasion, mostly cigarettes but sometimes something else. Most of all it's clear that he's just waiting it out now, poking around among the carrots, every life ambition passed without a chance to fulfil it. ]

[Chekov has many reasons for enjoying Aidan's company. One of those reasons is that he is also plagued by endless ennui. They both feel trapped and robbed of a future that involved more than puttering around the dome for the rest of their lives, and it's nice to have someone around who Gets It.]

Hello, Aidan. [He greets him cheerfully enough because it's always nice to talk to him. Doesn't matter that it's hard not to talk to people here since there are so few.] How are your root vegetables?

Hey. [ He straightens up, wiping sweat off his brow. He likes Chekov. Chekov makes him think but not in a depressing way where he feels stupid. ]

Pretty darn decent. I got some carrots that're ripe for pickin'.

[Chekov brightens.] Will you need help with that? I haven't picked carrots before.

[Thanks to Aidan, he has done a number of other garden-related things. He's not good at it, but he's always eager to learn and Aidan has never treated him like an idiot for having extremely little practical knowledge.]

Ain't gonna say no to that. It's not hard, you just grab 'em by the leaves an' pull.

[ The kind of garden work he got to do when he was little. It's pretty nostalgic, teaching others how to do it, especially since he's sure as shit never having kids of his own at this rate. ]

Yes, okay. [He drops to his knees to further assess this carrot situation, wholly unbothered by the dirt.] How do you tell when carrots are ripe?

Ain't so much about bein' ripe as bein' big enough. I planted these 'bout 75 days ago, so they should be good.

You've seen the small carrots, haven't you? Are they not left in the ground as long or are they a different kind?

[He sets about uprooting a carrot far more gingerly than is necessary. Plants are never as fragile as he thinks they should be, but it still seems wise to be careful.]

Th' baby carrots? They're literally just that... babies. You pick 'em before they're fully grown.

How cruel. [Clearly joking.] I've never told you this, Aidan, but my family did have a garden when I was growing up. It's remarkable that I avoided learning so much.

There was less shame in being clueless when you thought that I had no reason to know anything.

That's some secret to keep, though. For all this time, too. I dunno if I can ever truly forgive you. [ As if there's anything to forgive. ]

Then I maybe shouldn't tell you that gardening is an art that originated in Russia. If I did, you would never forgive me.

[He is aghast. Much too dramatically so for the horror to be sincere.] How can you doubt its existence after everything I've told you about it? I'm not that imaginative.

That wouldn't be such a bad thing. It would give me incentive to learn how to do this well. [Not that he's picking carrots poorly. He's so good at this. He's practically a farmer now, right?]

[ Sure. You got to start somewhere. Aidan was also an expert carrot picker when he was five. ]

Y'ever think that we'll run out of supplies? Because I think 'bout that all th' time. I know it's all fake, but... shit happens.

[So Chekov is a little behind the curve. There's nothing but time to catch up.]

Sometimes, yes. I think a lot about data corruption and mechanical failure and what those things could mean for us. Maybe supplies stop regenerating themselves, or maybe we experience other glitches that worsen in severity, or maybe the simulation ends and we stay unconscious in stasis until the pods break, too.

I still don't get how most of this works... shouldn't we be dead already, if all we eat is computer stuff?

[ At least he's old enough now to be that weird old guy who shouts at technology. ]

When I'm from, there are stasis units that suspend cellular activity... they stop everything, and so living bodies emit no waste and don't need to be nourished. It would be difficult to place every part of a body other the brain in stasis, and even more difficult to keep the brain alive and fully functional, but it's possible theoretically.

[He's mostly thinking out loud for his own benefit since none of it matters and Old Man Aidan isn't going to ask him to elaborate on stasis fields.]

By rights, we should be dead. I have no idea how whatever keeps us alive is being maintained.

[ Yeah no he understood about a fraction of what Chekov just said. Elaborations would just make his brain hurt, please no. ]

So for all we know, we could wake up tomorrow an' be dead. [ Sounds pretty great actually. ]
