Sorry. No one escapes heat death in this story. [He scans the titles of her other books, pleased to see the one on Caprican.] Your accent's getting better. Soon you'll be flooring everyone with your mastery of the most useful language in the dome.

You know your cheerful disposition and positive attitude put the rest of us to shame. [She clears room for him to sit beside her, ready to lean in and kiss his cheek if he does. Or his lips if he turns toward her.]

I speak a dead language from earth. I'm in more of a quantity over quality place.

I know. [He sits next to her with a self-satisfied smile and a quick hello-to-you-too kiss in response to hers. Who can even remember when that became normal?]

In that case, we should start in on Old Kobolian. I can't think of a deader language. [It's funny, see, because it was a dead language even before most of humanity was dead, too. At some point, joking about that also became normal.] How many languages do you know now, anyway? I lost count after eight.

Depends on how well I have to know it to count it. Some of them need work. And don't go tempting me with super dead languages. You know I'll jump at it.

Work on them by teaching them to me. I'm stuck at five. [Only five. Kitty, you make him look bad.] It feels like that was an opening for me to offer to tempt you with something else.

I could do that. [Was she being accidentally suggestive? She smiles, unbothered if she was.] What else did you have in mind?

[Maybe it was just him. It's hard to tell when so many of their conversations have suggestive undertones.]

Ice cream, actually. Maybe a walk on the beach. [Plot twist!]

[He's not wrong! It can be hard to tell and she's sure mistaken intention has led to action before. No regrets. And even if it wasn't her intent it didn't mean she couldn't be interested this time even if Pavel was eager this morning.] I make it a point in life to never turn down ice cream.

[Fortunately, there's no real incentive to regret things. What a nice future this is!]

So I've noticed. [He moves to help Kitty collect her books--partly to be helpful, mostly to see what she's up to beyond astrophysics and Caprican. The Russian cookbook gets a raised eyebrow.] Cooking? That's domestic of you.

Isn't it? I wanted to do something special for Pavel. It will probably result in stomach aches and needing to move to a place with a cleaner kitchen afterward, but I feel like it's the thought that counts.

Giving him food poisoning would definitely be something special. [Joking, obviously, even if it's true.] He'll appreciate it. I doubt that either of you could make a romantic gesture that didn't go over well, even if was a gesture that ended in disaster.

Something like that. Don't you ever argue or complain about each other to your friends? [Because Kitty sure hasn't been complaining to him and he wants to know about things.]

I complain about many things to my friends. Pavel's just never one of them. What am I going to say? He's too affectionate? Too understanding? I mean we're still people and I'm sure I've been annoyed by some minor thing here or there. [Though some of the normal "roommate" type things people often get upset about just never seem to bug her unless something else is bothering her. She lived with the X-Men. You can adapt to any kind of behavior.]

You two are disgusting. Almost twenty years and you're still in your honeymoon phase. [Maybe he's jealous, but just a little. It's not like they don't have problems. In their case, their problems happen to be with things that aren't each other.] ...Everything's alright with him?

[She laughs at that.] I think the beginning was a lot harder than now. We've worked out the kinks. Leave it to scientists, right? Refining the experiment of marriage. [Is she really confident enough to be calling herself a scientist? Sure, it's not necessarily a title she would have used outside that context of lumping them together, but she doesn't feel insecure about it either.]

Mm... [As for the question.] He's going through a rough patch. Homesick. [Seems like it hits everyone in one way or another. Some got over it early and haven't looked back. For some it took time. Sometimes it never really goes away. Not wanting to go home helps her most of the time. And sure, she could complain that she'd rather he was just as happy as her, but how is she going to complain about that? That's what making him a Russian dish is for. Anything to brighten his day even a little. But she can't give him true purpose or adventure or challenge. She can't give any of them that. Not really. Though she does what she can. Mental exercises are definitely a part of that with the languages and skill building.]

As far as I can remember, you made it look easy at the beginning too. [Easy to him, anyway, but he's made it this far without managing a romantic relationship. So.] I don't even want to ask what tests you put yourselves through in the experimentation process.

[He eases up on the sarcasm as the topic shifts. There's a caring person under Gaeta's wryness, suspicion, and self-loathing, and that person is around far more frequently than he used to be.] If only there was a cure for that. I doubt that there's anything you could do that you're not doing already, though.

I know. I do. [In the past it would have been harder for her to handle it. She probably would have made it worse in some ways by overreacting to it. She hopes not to do that this time.] Some things you just have to go through. He knows he's loved. And not just by me.

And are you kidding me? Do you remember what a mess I was after Reid? Poor Pavel. The first time he told me he loved me I told him he was very important to me. Not to mention figuring out the sex stuff. The past is the worst.

What, other people love him? I didn't know you were sharing him now. [Teasing, even if he still doesn't get the sex stuff after years of being aware of the arrangement. As long as it's working for them?]

So it was a slightly rougher start than I remember. It's hard to imagine a time when you weren't half of the least dysfunctional couple I've ever been around. And to be fair to past you, you were one of the most collected messes around.

He's free for sharing. [Not that he ever has in that way. It just didn't seem fair to only work one way even if that would just increase her wait times with her husband.] But that's not the kind of love I meant.

[She smiles.] Do we get a trophy? That's the real question. And can the trophy be filled with carbs? [He gets a look that says "thank you" for that last part.]

No, I know. We're one big, incestuous family in here. Full of love. [Mostly. There are at least three exceptions right now.]

[He raises an eyebrow.] First you want ice cream, now you want a trophy full of carbs. You're insatiable, Kitty Pryde.

Love and whatever else you find in families. [Hard not to be close for better or worse. She's damn protective of them all though. Even the ones who don't need protection.]

Pretty sure that's not the first time someone has said that about me. [Especially after her arrangement with Chekov started.]

Less fighting than in most. A side effect of not having another continent or planet to run away to if things get too ugly, I guess. [Good. Kitty should definitely protect him. Bad things happen to him a lot and only, like, half of those are things that he brings upon himself.]

I'm sure it's not. I've seen the way you eat. [He knows what she means. What's it called when you take possible innuendo and take out the suggestiveness?]

[He pokes her back because it's not immature to poke people when someone else starts it.] The trophy's a metaphor for sex now, right? I want to make sure we're on the same page here.
