[Bean Crushers]

[Twenty years ago Chekov zipped in and out of Bean Crushers a handful of times each day, constantly refueling but too antsy to sit down. His life has since slowed down dramatically. (When it first became clear that MarinaNova wasn't going to be escaped, in fact, it slowed to a crawl. A generally positive disposition and excellent coping mechanisms couldn't hold up against the realization that his family, his crewmates, his sense of purpose, and the goals that twenty-two years of planning and studying were building towards were lost. That was ages ago, though--just a memory, and not one he looks back on.) Nowadays he lingers, reading or planning lessons or looking for someone to chat with as he drinks. It's more about company and a place to be than coffee.

He's a married man whose existence revolves around his wife (whom he still loves deeply and stupidly) and his friends (who are also loved, albeit less stupidly). It makes him feel like a man twice his age--eighty-four instead of forty-two.

There are worse feelings.]

[Education Center]

[That's not to say that Chekov is wholly without a life outside of Kitty and other companions. At the lowest point in his prison existence, he threw himself wholeheartedly into teaching math and physics in an attempt to fill the gaping void that the loss of home ripped open and never really stopped. No, there isn't a huge demand for classes on physics and mathematics. Yes, Chekov still teaches them. If no one comes, he makes lesson plans; if someone does come, they get a class that caters to their level and is tailored to their specific talents and interests.

If, twenty years ago, someone had told him that teaching would inspire the same kind of enthusiasm in him that visiting new planets and charting previously unknown sections of space used to, he would have laughed (politely). Now he does it just as much for his own benefit as anyone else's.]

[Freestyle]

[But of course Chekov exists outside of the coffee shop and the education center. He still hasn't acquired much of a taste for nature, but he meanders through the parts of the parks and gardens where his friends (his friends are everyone in the dome, just so there's no confusion) tend to be.

Where there are people, there is Chekov. His world is very small now and everyone in it is profoundly important.]

[Chekov should be used to seeing a younger version of his wife walking around by now... how she grew into someone who looked the same, but didn't. It probably had been weird for a while, but now it was just another day in MarinaNova.

A notebook of her own in hand as she was working a few things for her classes as well, she gave him a smile as she spotted him in the teacher's lounge.]

Hey. Mind if I share a table?

[When Chekov first came here, there was someone else with his face. Weird is par for the course.]

Of course not, no. [He smiles back and gestures to a seat next to him. This Kitty feels like a family member. Would she be his sister-in-law?] How are your classes, Kitty?

They're going well.

Though, I'm curious... No one from the cheerleading squad checked in today to let me know if they're coming to tomorrow's practice. Have you noticed any mass disappearances?

[She was hoping this was another glitch...]

Mass disappearances? No. [He looks around as if a quick survey of the lounge will give him a different answer.] I haven't noticed any disappearances.

Have you tried to contact them?

Yeah... but...

[She frowned.]

Maybe it's me. Maybe it's some kind of glitch or something.

[The years get a person used to that.]

It's probably nothing. I'll worry more tomorrow.

I'll note any oddities that I notice today. The most recent glitches have been harmless, so hopefully it won't be necessary for you to worry tomorrow, either.

[ Chuck is also married, happily, her life revolving around her husband and the many adopted children and not-quite-children they've adopted over the years. The older she got, the more she loosened up the definition of children until it encompassed pretty much everyone in the dome in need of a mom, regardless if they were older than her or not. Chekov fell in there, somewhere. It's hard to keep track.

Even though she still spends most of her days at the Dive, it's sometimes nice to drink a coffee someone else has brewed. This is why she bumps into him at Bean Crushers, with a bright smile. ]

Hey! [ She takes a moment to tuck her hair behind her ear. ] I was just thinking about you.

No, silly. Unless you have and I just haven't found out yet. [ Have you? Does she need to ground his grown man ass? ] I found some really nice mixed beets and thought maybe you had some ideas on what to make with them.

[He is among the least troublesome of her children, but he likes checking in just in case there was unwitting mischief. Not that checking in matters when she's asking him about food because yes he has ideas about beets.]

Have you made beet tarts? With goat cheese and honey? There's nothing better to make with beets, not even borscht.

There's a finite amount of things that can be made in twenty years, even by someone as industrious as you. [He tilts his head.] If you have patience to spare. I'm not a talented cook, but I can follow orders.

[Education hadn't been all that important to Nico when he was younger. He didn't expect to live long enough for it to matter. But he wasn't (always) fighting for survival here, and as he got older it became startlingly apparent how little he actually knew.

It hadn't been easy asking or help, or admitting he needed to start from the very beginning. Coupled with his tendency to get fidgety and distracted, it had been slow going. He appreciated Chekov's patience. He liked math, took to it more quickly than other subjects. All those card games he played probably helped a great deal.]

Hey. [He takes a seat across from Chekov.] Is anyone else coming today?

[It helped that Chekov tends to get fidgety and distracted himself, perhaps. Plus, Nico's a good student. Probably. Chekov hasn't had a lot of other students to compare him to, but he likes Nico and his willingness to listen and learn.]

Nico, hello. [He smiles ruefully and shuffles his papers, looking for the worksheet that he'd prepared.] I don't think so, no. There isn't very much interest in this subject... which makes your interest all the more valuable.

More for me then.

[He gets it. Math isn't for everyone. Just like reading and writing wasn't for him. He'd learned ways to work around the dyslexia, which also made math difficult, but there was this thing called patience, and it helped quite a bit.]

What's on the agenda today? Something new?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]candothat
2017-01-23 10:58 pm UTC (link)
You say that as if there's a limited amount of math to be taught. [Which he finds funny since knowledge seems to be the only limitless thing available in the prison now. Or maybe that's sad?]

I thought that, today, I would give you logic problems. Nothing new, only new ways to apply the reasoning abilities that you have already. Problems like this--somewhat practical ones--seem to appeal to you more than abstract mathematics.

[He pushes a worksheet and a pen Nico's way with a smile. The problems are along these lines, for the most part. There's usually more to lessons than this, but Chekov has been impressed with Nico's overall grasp of the concepts they've covered and wants to see how he does with this.

He'll work on his own things while Nico contemplates the assignment, ready to answer questions or go over solutions.]

There isn't? [Kidding. One of the things he likes most about math is how vast it is.]

Logic, huh. Sounds fun.

[He takes the worksheet and purses his lips, not entirely thrilled that they are mostly word problems. But he opens up the notebook he brought along and gets to work, reading over the first problem several times to be sure he understands it before working it out on a sheet of paper.

He gets through three problems before he stops to rub his eyes, deciding it's time for a little break. Normally he would let Chekov dictate when the stopping points were, but today felt more relaxed.]

Kitty invited herself over to dinner at my place sometime. We decided you can come too.

I'm going to agree with you even if you meant that sarcastically.

[The word problems are just a build up to the next class, which will be on mathematical induction. Plenty of numbers!

Chekov looks up, quite happy to take a break to talk.]

That was kind of both of you to include me. Was Kitty pushy? I'm willing to apologize on her behalf.

[ It had been an interesting morning for Kirk, to say the least. It wasn't every day that you woke up with someone like Jack in your bed, and god it had been great. There was a certain pep in his step as he cruised into Bean Crushers, practically humming to himself despite the notion in his head that he was the one experiencing a glitch instead of the other way around.

At first, Kirk didn't recognize Chekov as he glanced around the coffee shop. But those curls were unmistakeable, even with a couple of decades added to them. Coffee in hand, Kirk came over to Chekov and smiled, waving his hand in greeting. ]

Hello, Jim. [The automatic greeting, delivered with slightly less cheer than Kirk might be accustomed to, turns into a belated double-take. Chekov frowns in a puzzled-but-not-displeased way.] I'm sure that you noticed this already, but you're very young today.

Yes, I was informed of that this morning.

[ And put this sudden youth to very good use if he did say so himself, but he wouldn't bore Chekov with those details. ]
