[Closed to Neil]

[Tieria was "sleeping" a bit late again. It was rare, but it usually meant he'd been up the night before using his quantum brainwaves to try quietly tapping into the system, probing to weaknesses without diving far enough to trigger an alarm. Nothing that felt secure enough to try last night, so he'd avoided anything beyond the first level.

That meant, however, that he was more tired than usual, so he was perfectly happy to take his time getting up. He didn't have a pressing schedule today, after all, so he stayed there after morning announcements. He had himself positioned so his back was touching against Neil.

Tieria hadn't had a lot of relationships, but he and Neil had been together for a while now. Tieria was content with it, and that seemed to be enough.]

=====

[Around the dome]

[Twenty years was a lot longer than an Innovade was usually active. He hadn't changed... well, physically. Other things had changed. He had matured emotionally, even having explored dating, and he had loosened up a lot. He had developed something of a sense of humor, and wasn't as serious all the time.

He was going through his usual routine today, curating the changes in the library, prepping for some of the classes he taught, and a few safety patrols.]

[Michiru hasn't changed that much either. She still looks very much like the way she had twenty years ago. A little wiser if that were possible. Twenty years had given her time to study new things...

And learn new things about herself.

She found herself in the library today where Tieria was working and walked over]

Hello, Tieria.

[He gave her a small smile in greeting, still feeling a little flustered by her presence, and nodded.]

Hello, Michiru.

[He'd probably never stop getting that feeling from her.]

Are you looking for anything in particular today?

[It was far too easy for Tieria to be flustered around her and she knew why. Over the years, they had dated a few times, partially because he needed practice and partially because she did actually like him. Not as much as Haruka mind you]

Nothing in particular. Just came to see if there was anything interesting here.

[Since things changed]

[He knew her heart definitely belonged to Haruka, but it had been nice to spend time with her all the same. He didn't want to replace Haruka. That had never been his goal. But he had appreciated her advice all the same, especially after they had decided it was better to remain friends.

He nodded over to a stack he had accumulated over the course of the late morning.]

That is what I have found so far. I haven't finished the entire collection, yet.

[Normally, he would have by now.]

[She really did cherish his company. He had been a good friend when Haruka had disappeared so many years ago and he still was now. Even as they were dating, they had understood it wasn't going to go further than a certain level. Even so, she wouldn't have traded it for anything]

Really? You haven't finished the entire collection yet?

[It was half serious and half teasing as she started examine the books that Tieria had indicated]

[That a somewhat flustered look.]

No. [He gave her a small smile.] I got a late start.

[He focused a bit on the stack in front of him now.]

It was a long night.

Oh? Any reason in particular?

[It made her wonder if it was for a good reason or a bad reason. She knew how Tieria was. He let things get to him so easily]

[That probably depended on what one considered a good reason or a bad reason, but he nodded.]

I just... I was just checking into the system again.

[He hadn't given up, and most people had caught on to that by now. So far, most people had left him alone about it. Once in a while, someone would challenge him about it, but most of the time no one said anything.]

Not this time.

[Not that many times had been that didn't involve a potential punishment, but just poking the edges for weaknesses hadn't really revealed anything.

He was getting used to the disappointment.]

Perhaps another time.

Do you need a distraction?

[For someone as long-lived as he apparently was (he didn't even know that Innovades could live so long without aging...), 20 years was apparently nothing. And, even after all this time, the one thing about his personality that hadn't changed at all was his propensity to be hard-headed and stubborn.

He considered that for a moment.]

Perhaps.

[He sighed a little.]

Maybe we could get some ice cream.

[That hadn't changed, either...]

[ By this point, Neil knew what was happening, and even though he woke up at the usual time, he lied still, keeping his breathing steady, to allow Tieria as much rest as he would permit himself.

Only when Tieria stirred himself did he shift, gently pressing a kiss to his temple.
]

Headache?

[ He would say good morning, but...

When Tieria had been hurting himself to try to find a way out of here, and he woke up still in the Dome, was it, really?
]

[He almost sighed, but controlled it into just a deep breath instead, deciding to just allow himself to focus on the fact that he was still with Neil instead of still away from home.

After Neil spoke, Tieria turned over and pressed himself against his partner's side, not meeting his eyes just yet, just letting his arm rest across Neil's chest.]

It's fine.

[It might be something of a denial, a way to try and calm Neil's concern even after all this time, but his limited abilities and the side effects of using them in Marina were pretty commonplace for him now. He'd accepted that much, even if it was still frustrating.

He closed his eyes again after a moment and turned his head to press his face against Neil's shoulder.]

[ Neil's arm wrapped around Tieria's shoulders, holding him close. He... knew that it wasn't fine. That Tieria was hurting, and would hurt again and again, until he found a way out.

And he felt selfish, so selfish, for giving him a reason to stay here. A cage was not where Tieria Erde belonged.

He reached with his other hand, stroking gently through the purple strands of hair. Kissed the top of his head.
]

There has to be a way I can help you. I'm... [ He closed his eye. ] I'm sorry I haven't asked before.

[He didn't immediately answer, considering his next words carefully.]

I don't think there is really a way for that.

[What he was doing, the closest he had ever come to really breaking through was when he had been working with three other Innovades, all using their abilities in tandem. It wasn't something Neil was even capable of. He looked up at him.]

Besides, I can't expect that of you.

[It was such a difficult position to be in. They had gotten to this point in their relationship, something that never would have happened back home because of Ali Al-Saachez, and Tieria's drive to get back was essentially dooming them to be apart. Neil couldn't return with him.

That hurt a lot. To expect Neil to support that with help seemed like a bit much.]

You know I don't really want to give this up, right?

[He just had this overdeveloped sense of responsibility, and being in the dome without a true purpose... even having grown as much as he had, Tieria still sometimes felt lost.]

[ Neil stayed quiet for a moment, in turn, then pressed his lips to Tieria's hairline, long and soft. ]

You aren't expecting it of me. I'm offering.

[ Because there was a difference, a pretty big one at that. And yes, Neil knew. He knew that going back alone - well, without Neil - would hurt. But it had been so long and Tieria had not stopped trying, and so the last question was only partially true something Neil could confirm knowing.

His hands stroked up and down Tieria back, his breathing just a little ragged.
]

I know that you don't want to give it up. I know that you can't and won't stop trying, too. I know - I know that even when you belong with me, you don't belong here.

And I know that you will do what needs to be done, no matter what you want.

It is part of you, and I fell in love with all of you. That, too.

It's... It is all right.

[ He breathed out softly. Fully aware that what he was suggesting would horrify Tieria if he thought he was offering himself for the experiment. Which he might, if it came to that, but he was going to try to offer different angles and ideas.

Innovades were brilliant, and Tieria was particularly so, and more human than what Neil had known of the rest, but it sometimes took a particular human kind of stupidity to reach a breakthrough.
]

Have you tried to focus at a time when you know somebody is returning to their body?

I know.

[He sighed, listening to Neil reassure him that what he was doing, as pointless as it might seem to some, was still something he supported. He clung to him a bit, but looked up to meet Neil's gaze at the suggestion.]

We've not been able to predict that sort of thing happening, yet. [He shook his head.] So no. I haven't tried.

[He looked a confused for a moment. Would that even be possible?]

It would seem to make sense that, when a glitch of some sort occurs, the system would be at its most vulnerable. The challenge would be figuring out when it happens so I can access it at the right moment.

[ Neil is quiet for a moment, his eye thoughtful and a little sad. Yes, he's hesitating, but not doing all that he can think of, when it's for a cause he believes in... ]

People still seem to die, sometimes not quite so fast as to be ... impossible to get to them, when it happens. There has to be some disturbance when that occurs - or the return of them before the morning.

[ See what he meant about human insanity? ]

[Tieria stared at him for a moment, and his eyes narrowed slightly in that rather judgmental way he often did.

Oh no. This was not going where Tieria was thinking this might be going. He was going to nip this in the bud right now.]

Yo, yo. Tieria.

[ Yes, he knew exactly where Tieria's mind went. ]

You going through it once is plenty enough, I was not volunteering.

[ Unless Tieria got desperate. But that was not a conversation for now. ]

I was merely pointing out that it's an opening that might be more usable than just throwing yourself bodily against the wall. If the opportunity presents itself.

[He sighed, shifting his gaze away from Neil now as he thought about it.]

It would be something to try... should it actually happen. But we usually don't find out until after the fact.

[And no, Neil, you weren't going to be involved in dying in any way... regardless.]

[ And Neil used that as an invitation to hug Tieria a little closer, a wordless reassurance because the worded one...

Neil was a little selfish, or so he thought of himself. But he wasn't selfish enough to stop people from finding their way home. Not even the ones he loved through and through.

(Or even especially the ones he loved so much - they deserved the freedom all the more, wanting it.)
]

It does seem rather ghoulish, to look around for somebody who is dying, but...

I rather think it might be one of the very few possibilities that you haven't thought of, by now.

[Tieria hummed a bit, a thoughtful sound as he snuggled into the hug.]

It does. That's likely one of the reasons I hadn't considered it.

[He frowned.]

Also, I know that, as far as people who might be dying of an illness, the prison seems to take care of that aspect, so that's not something we can just go around asking about.
