Of course I would. [There was a time when he would have said it and he would have been right. A time when her heart wasn't truly free to love him yet and somehow he foolishly fell in love with her when she wasn't looking. It was a hard time. She never wanted to be unfair to him. He meant so much to her. But she wanted to be honest with both of them and it was a confusing time and she still had a lot of mending to do. He helped with that. She can't imagine what her life would have been without him. She doesn't want to imagine it. She doesn't have to.]

We love each other exactly equal amounts. [She also very much hopes he never doubts she loves him. Their arrangement isn't one she ever pictured for her life but she thinks it's working. She thinks it's working really well actually and it would be crushing to find out that any measure of the sadness he's been feeling is about the openness of their marriage. He'd tell her if it was, right?

She kisses him again.

And of course she'd go with him if that was an option. It would be hard. She'd be leaving behind her family. Ton, Jack, Ianto, everyone. Just every single one of them even the ones she doesn't talk to much or even get along with all the time. It's been twenty years and she loves them all in her own way. She's also accepted and respected here in ways she can't imagine being able to duplicate anywhere else. She would be remarkably foreign even in a world as vast as Chekov's. But if it meant his happiness she'd still choose to go. She's his wife. She'd have him and she'd adjust to the rest.]

[He wishes he could dismiss his idiocy at the beginning as a side effect of being younger and less wise, but he's still stupidly in love with her and has accepted that as an unalterable fact of life. Her honesty at the start only dragged him in deeper and he was helplessly, irrevocably gone by the time her hurts were more-or-less healed.]

A diplomatic reply. [Which is said between kisses.] Since love can't be quantified [smooch, because he is clearly not willing to give up kissing or talking] I won't challenge it.

[He won't doubt it, either. They love each other. They're good together--better, maybe, than they would be if their marriage was more traditional. After his initial insecurity and fears that he wasn't enough for her (never voiced), it just made sense. He trusts her to stay with him, and he trusts what they have. Kitty could have left him any number of times, even after they were married--there were times when he wouldn't have blamed her because he couldn't stand being around himself--and she didn't. She hasn't, and he isn't afraid that she will. She's loving and patient and true and he will never doubt those qualities in her.

Hopefully she won't doubt those qualities in him, either, because she's everything. Maybe that isn't fair to her, but life in MarinaNova is so small. This is their whole universe and everything in it is exponentially more important than it would be if they were free. She's not just his wife--she's his dreams and his future. She's entire stars and solar systems and galaxies.]

[The limits and seclusion forced on them by the restraints of this place are also why their little family is still just the two of them. Well, the two of them and their tribble. She always wanted children and her whole life it's been a completely inadvisable thing. After the overthrow it was possible. But that would mean living in actual Marina away from everyone else until they could put their own child into one of the stasis pods and hope the shared connection would work. There were still so many inmates whose bodies aren't attached. She couldn't bring a child into this. To live with no one his or her own age as her parents died off? Growing old with only the immortals who remain. It's not the life she wants to doom anyone to much less their child. That was a hard time and she leaned heavily on Chekov through it. Her last great heartbreak.]

Oh, no, I totally found a way to quantify it. I've been quantifying the heck out of it all over the place. [So many kisses.] I would show you the results but they're top secret. Hush, hush.

[She doesn't doubt his love, sincerity, or devotion. He's been unwavering and steady in ways she only wishes she could be.]

[Chekov never really thought about children until Kitty brought it up. He'd assumed, once upon a time, that he'd just borrow Sulu's daughter or one of his many younger cousins if he felt a need to spend time around someone young and impressionable. Having his own, though... if their circumstances were different, of course he would have had a family with Kitty, and their children would have been adorable and brilliant. But he had never wanted them like she did.]

When was the last time that I told you I love the way you say "quantify"? [See, not prying into her secrets. He pulls back slightly to look at her and her messy morning hair and thoroughly-kissed lips. She's so beautiful. More beautiful than she was when they were younger, even, now that she isn't so haunted.]

[There were times in the past when it was hard for her to understand. She always did her best to respect it, but it sometimes made her feel undesirable or too needy. It was never anything he did. But doubts have a way of creeping in with very little invitation. But twenty years is a lot of time and they managed to find their way together. And at the end of the day he is still absolutely the one she wants to be with the most in every way.

[Perhaps he didn't always convey how much he does want her clearly or reassure her sufficiently when that doubt came sneaking in. Maybe he didn't explain his wants particularly well either, especially at first when they were still new and learning about each other. She's been patient, though. Even when she didn't understand, she was understanding.

His hands run through her hair and across her skin and he makes no attempt to stay quiet.]

[He was always patient with her too. And so generous and giving. She's sure she initiated at times when he just wanted to show intimacy by holding her. He was also gentle and loving when she felt guilty about those times once she did understand better.

She loves him and she wants to show him that in every way she can. Sometimes it's like this. And sometimes it's by refraining. Times like this always seem extra powerful now.]
