Terrible vampire romance novels. As I am not a teenage girl I suspect I'm not quite the intended audience. [That dry humor of his hasn't changed at all. Then again not much has with him. Physically he looks the same as he ever did. Perhaps a bit paler, a bit colder to the touch, and of course there's the lack of suits just now and the skull ring. He puts his book aside and smiles, taking another sip of his drink.]

So? What brings you here today? [Which is code for an invitation to sit and gossip like they always do.]

	True, that I can't argue with. There's a cooking section just down there. Turn right at the end of this row and head five shelves down and you should be able to spot it. I'm not sure if they have anything specifically dedicated to Russian cooking or not. [Easier to feel trapped lately, knowing they've succeeded in overthrowing the Wardens but that they really can't go back. That this little virtual bubble is it. He tries not to think about what it will be like in another twenty years, or the twenty after that, until only the tiny handful of them with longer lives are stuck here with each other forever.] I think the fact that you're trying will mean a great deal to him. Even if it doesn't fix things he'll understand and appreciate what you're trying to do.

[She feels more free here than she ever has before. She never had anywhere else to go—not really. She would have gone to the stars with Chekov even if she would have been forever out of place in a world where only he really understood what she came from. This place is a home to her. She's grown more comfortable and happy with time. She feels for her husband and the others who only feel the years of captivity weighing on them though. And she does understand it. The dome can feel very small sometimes especially if there's conflict. Since the world itself doesn't expand she keeps working on her mind instead—learning new languages and skills. She may joke about how bad her cooking is, but it's really improved.]

That's the goal. Remind him he's the most loved of all the Chekovs. All the Pavels too. [She smiles slightly because she does love him and it's hard not to smile when thinking about him. It might surprise some people that they have a somewhat open relationship that only she really takes advantage of.]

Oh you with the flattery. [She smiles warmly at Ianto. She's always worked hard for this community, but it feels a lot more effortless now than it did in those early years. She was in so much pain. Focused on loss even more than love even as the fought to be different.] He's so cute when he wakes up. It's like the cute he usually is, but cuter. [She really hopes it's just a patch. She's with him no matter what.]

Now, what's up with you before I turn into even more of a terrible non-vampire romance?

True, he is pretty cute. [Not really Ianto's type because he doesn't wear dramatic coats but still cute.]

Nothing new. [There's a lot unsaid in those two words. No, nothing new, he's still not speaking to Jack outside of their frostily cordial forced interactions at Council meetings. It's hard to give the silent treatment to your next door neighbor buts he's managing it impressively well.]

[He's still hurting enough to be angry about it rather than sad. Then again maybe it was a long time coming. Once the bands were gone it was only a matter of time until Jack went back to his old ways, and guilt over how things started between him and Spike made him excuse the cheating far longer than he should have until things got too bitter and complicated to be fixed. It makes him feel the way he did all those years ago at Torchwood, like something impermanent and convenient rather than an actual person Jack cared about and he resents him for that now.]

Everything old is good. We are the most boring domestic vampire couple here. [At least saying that made him smile. And boring isn't the word for it, not remotely. Now that it really is just the two of them things are perhaps better than they ever were.] All this makes me feel like I've been a little unfair to Spike, like I should have just left Jack at the start. He deserved better than that and I'm trying to make it up to him now.

Things are complicated. Here more than most places if only because there are so few of us and so little space. You always do your best by people you care about, Ianto. [She thinks they were all just doing their best and being themselves and it doesn't always work out. Hard not to think of how things went with her and Reid what feels like lifetimes ago. But she doesn't feel great seeing them in pain over it and anger is a kind of pain. There's also the part where Jack is someone she's with occasionally with Chekov's approval of course.]

I tried to do my best by him for years. [He replies bitterly. He doesn't resent her for her occasional involvement with Jack. He knows perfectly well how hard it is to say no to him, and he knows the two of them always had a certain intensity between them. As a matter of fact he's never hated or resented anyone Jack's slept with. There's been jealousy occasionally, depending on the person, and some of them hurt more than others but at the end of the day he's always placed the blame squarely on Jack's shoulders. He was the one who broke promise after promise, he was the one who acted like what they had wasn't worth sticking around for.] I think deep down he still thinks of himself as my boss, and like I'm supposed to fall in line no matter what he does and just accept it. And I did for years because I thought I had to, like I was so damn lucky to be with him I should just put up with it all and be grateful.

[She's never been in a relationship with Jack. Not really. They had their marriage and for that day it felt very much like they had been and it had it's ups and downs but they were largely great together. There was nothing saying that's how it would really play out though. And then timing was never on the side of them being together. He was faithful to Ianto during that window when she might have chosen differently than Chekov. She has no regrets there. She is extremely happy with her Russian space man.

So, when Ianto speaks like this she knows a little of his side and a little of Jack's and then there's just knowing them both and she doubts Jack ever meant to make him feel that way, but not that he felt it.

She leans over and kisses the top of Ianto's head.] Anyone would be lucky to be with you. You know that, right?

Yes, I do know, which is part of the problem. [If there's anyone here who he can really count on to listen and understand what he's talking about it's her. She's known him the longest, since his very first day and after everything they've been through together he doubts there's anything he couldn't talk to her about.] I spent so long thinking I was lucky to be with him that I excused everything he did and the way he treated me and he just got so used to accepting it all that he couldn't handle it when I told him things had to change. The only thing I regret is how difficult it's made things for you having us both on the Council.

[Being able to really talk to Ianto about things has been something that's really helped her get to this point in her life. He's grounding for her and she respects him. She saw the way he handled the investigative team and then everything with the take over and the formation of the council.]

Don't worry about that. The Council and I have been through tougher times. And I'm hoping the two of you will find a way to work through this eventually. Not saying soon or even with the happiest of endings, but even Reid and I can play chess together now. [Though he's been keeping to himself a lot lately.]

I have absolutely no interest in playing chess with him. Or interacting with him in any way. [He's still stinging from their hallway argument this morning but he isn't ready to discuss that with her yet. It's still too recent and he's too angry about it. Next week it will be their topic of discussion.] This is the first time I've ever actually hated being here. When I got here all those years ago it was so much better than all the shit at Torchwood and knowing I was going to die and even with everything that's happened since I've had people I care about. Now I have to lie awake each night and listen to him fuck everyone else in the dome next door.

She would never have been with Jack right next to Ianto's place. She also wouldn't take him back to her place obviously. Even with permission and understanding that's messed up.]
