[ Park ]

Don't suppose you could do an ol' mate a favor and light a ciggy, could you?

[ Could old John Constantine stands behind Kitty, cigarette in his mouth. He's entirely capable of lighting one up--he just knows how to smooth his way into a conversation. Even if he's more interested in the languages she's learning. What's wrong with adding more to your list of things? Besides, when he does die and his ghost is haunting around the prison? It might come in handy. ]

[She responds without looking up from her page until she gets to the end of her paragraph.]

John, you know I quit smoking over a decade ago. Why would I still carry a lighter on me? [Even as she dryly protests she fishes a lighter out of her pocket. That habit remained and this one was formed. She flips the trigger and it sparks to life, holding it out for him.]

Gimme. [Reaching out for her payment.]

Because for every good dead a hero does? They've got a nasty skeleton in their closet. [ He grins and leans in for the light. ]

Thanks, luv. Always a pleasure doing business with you. [ He says as he hands her a cigarette. Don't tell her husband, John. ]

Are people still trying to call me a hero? [It doesn't bother her like it used to. Doesn't make her feel guilty or unworthy. It's just lightly amusing to her.] Now skeletons I've got, but I like to put them out where everyone can see them.

[Chekov may sniff it out, but she was thinking of hitting the beach later anyway. She takes a deep drag as she slides the chess set over to make a place for him to sit if he so chooses.]

I think you're always going to be a bit of a hero. [ If that is a compliment or not is up in the wind. John doesn't particularly care if it is or not. ] Lucky for you. I don't suppose you'd get lynched for the skeletons you've got.

[ Without really asking, John takes a seat next to her. ]

[Seat's all his.] Lynching is so old school. I'd hope they'd find a more modern way to take me out.

Don't give the Wardens too much credit. They're the ones who thought a prison inside another bloody prison was necessary.

What are you, their accountant? It worked pretty well for them. [Until it didn't in her mind. She remembers an overthrow that gave the place more freedom, but they still couldn't get home or even leave so they may not be prisoners, but they're definitely trapped.]

Do I look like the sort of bastard that could actually do accounting? [ There is a half grin on his face at that. ] I think it's a bit unnecessary.

This isn't exactly the group of people I'd pick for lifetime sentences in a multi-dimensional prison either. [Smirk.] With some exceptions. [A pointed, but teasing, look.]

Come off it, luv. We both know I am the exception to every rule. [ The grin on his face disappears then, grabbing his chest as he starts coughing violently. ]

Someone thinks he's pretty special. [Her amusement cuts off sharply into concern.] John. [It's not a surprise exactly. She just wishes there was something she could do to help beyond the supportive hand she rests on his back. She'll call Ton if it doesn't stop soon.]

[ He raises his hand to wave off her concern. After a few moments he takes in a ragged breath or too before wiping away the saliva on his lips. At least this time he didn't actually cough up some of his lung. ]

You'd think that if this is just all bloody digital representation, that they'd cure the basic things wrong with their god damn inmates. No need to worry. You can't out run fate.

They wanted the program good enough to trick us. It did for almost a year. [Not much comfort in this moment though.]

Bit redundant to keep the program running when we know better. [ He looks up at her. ] What do you think they'd do if one of their inmates died off before they've been rehabilitated?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I'm not sure they ever cared about rehabilitation. [She says this slowly because what's she's really trying to work out is what he means by the first part because it conflicts with the narrative she's been working with today. Her past with the overthrow of the wardens and them finding out they still couldn't get anyone home. The one she thinks everyone shares because why wouldn't she?]

The life support systems are only set up to run this long with us in the tanks. So, we voted on staying in the simulation. We tweaked it as much as we could. You know this. We're still working on code that will improve your virtual symptoms.

Probably not. Just another way for another bunch of assholes to play God.

[ John takes in a deep and shaky inhale. He'll get himself sorted out sooner rather than later. And, what, stop smoking? That'll never happen. ]

No offense, luv, but I'm thinking there's not much you can do to cure that virtual symptom. If the brain thinks the body is dying then it'll find a way to die. Not that I'm really up for that option, but, it is what it is.

I'd rather get out of this bloody simulation and be walking around in the real world.

M'gann has telepathic abilities. Maybe she could talk your mind out of it. [She doesn't like admitting defeat. She will think of ways to work on this.

She tips her head thoughtfully.]

What makes you think dying here would get you walking around in the real world? Connections in the afterlife?

It's best if she doesn't go roaming around in there. She might not end up being that lovely put together shapeshifter that she is. [ Which, is rather a serious and kind sentiment from him. He knows that his mind is not the place to go walking in around. Better just him to be the screwed up one and save someone else from the horror of it all. ]

I think dying here means the body is going to die. Which ultimately means you'd be plucking about until Judgement Day. But, I'd take my chances walking around in reality with my lungs hanging out of my god damn throat then sitting here twiddling my thumbs in a virtual construction.

Dying in here scrambles things, but usually we just get bounced back here. [This does feel different though. Those were always murders or accidents before. This could be a virtual indication of what's happening to his body too.]

I'd miss you. I don't like having to miss things.

Easier to control the population of criminals if you built a supposedly unbeatable prison, eh? [ John still wants out. He has just gotten grumpier about it. ]

Well, we could always find a way for all of us to get out. Populate the proper prison. No need to miss anything that way.
