[Technically Ai had no duties here. She wasn't the prefect at the school meant to keep humans and vampires safe. She wasn't even on the Defense Force. But she had too much of her mother in her to stand by and do nothing.

Which is why she left the relative safety of the store to find those creatures that were lurking around that the man on the communicator had spoken about.

The raptors and wasps weren't all that much trouble for her to handle, not now that she'd gotten her abilities back.

What Ai doesn't expect is to be hit with a sudden case of fear. She can count on one hand all of the times she'd been afraid in her life because Ai had almost always felt safe. Between her mother, Zero and all of the friends of her parents - there was never anything to be afraid of. Which is what makes her stop as a creeping sensation crawls up her back.

It causes her to miss the buzzing that accompanies the wasps. Before she knows it, a sharpness pierces her shoulder and Ai whips around to tear it to shreds within seconds without even lifting a finger.

But the damage is already done. The wasp's venom coursing through her body, her heart already pounding quickly from the fear that struck her earlier. Something moves in the corner of her eye and Ai spins to look at it.

Her father is standing there. Even though his back is turned towards her, Ai would know him anywhere. She's been to see him enough times that she recognizes him from behind. Yet Ai can't quite bring herself to move yet. Still frozen in place by the fear from earlier.

Right up until the man crumples to the ground lifelessly.]

Father!

[It spurs her into a flurry of movement and she speeds towards him only to stop just out of reach. Her eyes are fixed on him. There's a hole in his chest where a heart should lay and black ooze seeping out. So much of it until it pools under him and then it starts towards her.

That isn't blood, that much she knows. It doesn't look or smell right and when it threatens to run over her shoes, Ai steps back - to the side but the trail follows her.

Suddenly her father's head jerks towards her and his eyes open. But there are no eyes. Just black, empty holes where they should be and Ai jumps back in response.]

F-father... [Her voice comes out weakly and shakily, air trapped in her lungs.

When his mouth falls open but no sound comes out, that's when Ai turns on her heel and bolts - possibly only to find herself colliding with the nearest person.]

[It's dark and he can't see, but for the lantern (flashlight) in his hand. He's heard the buzzing once or twice, but has been quick to immediately leave the vicinity when it's happened. Moreso he's been happy to focus on the raptors, claws long since bloodied even with the difficulty of the darkness against him.

He's fairly aware of his surroundings and the vicinity immediately around him. But what he doesn't anticipate is the speed and force in which something collides into his chest. It hits him like a ton of bricks and he goes hurdling backwards. Back hitting a tree behind him he groans in confusion.

Ouch... Claw lifting defensively as a light weight shifts a top him, it freezes when he hears a soft, feminine breath. A.... girl? It's a girl that ran into him so hard that it literally knocked him off of his feet?

... What?]

Are you all right? [ With a hand lifting to his head, the other reaches out to try and offer her help up. His flashlight has been knocked out of his hand and so he can't see very well, but he's careful to remain respectful.]

[The darkness doesn't have much affect on her, she can see well enough that a flashlight isn't necessary. Except maybe it might have helped her to avoid the extremely tall and light-colored man that she literally ran into. Now they're on the ground and Ai feels as if she's struggling to catch her breath.

So she doesn't move off of him right away, only after a minute does her hand find something solid and Ai pushes back. Her heart is still pounding in her chest and it's so loud.

Eyes dart back to where her father lay several feet away only to find him gone now. There isn't any trace of him having been there in the first place.

Ai takes a deep breath in and then releases it slowly. She looks over at the man she ran over and is still essentially on top of him. Oh, whoops.]

Fine, I think. [There's a hand held out to her and Ai takes it, using it to push herself to her feet. She keeps hold of it to help drag him up too.] Sorry. Are you alright?

[He'll admit that he's a little flustered. Color faintly decorates his cheeks, and he clears his throat as her petite body shifts atop him until she finally takes his hand. Once off, her hand doesn't fall away as expected. Instead, he feels a sudden rush of air as he's hefted off of the ground, and nearly stumbles, taken aback by the force.

. . . Isn't he heavy?]

T-Think nothing of it. I am uninjured. [Nothing he can't shake off. Instead, while he doesn't continue to grasp her hand after up, he lifts it up to his chest respectfully.] However, it is dangerous out here tonight. I must insist that we get you to safety. A young woman such as yourself should not be allowed to come to harm. [He may not be on the defense force here, but along with his companions they have always worked outside of the law when aiding others, so this is nothing new.] I will protect you. Please allow me to take you somewhere safe.

[Most of the people she interacts with that closely have known her since she was a baby. Others don't step within her personal bubble, but it would be improper of her to point it out. So Ai focuses on getting them both back on their feet which she may put a little too much strength into.

When they're both standing, Ai lets go of his hand and shifts to pick up his flashlight. The no longer illuminated flashlight. She flicks it a couple of times but it doesn't turn on.]

That's not necessary, I can take care of myself. Both my mother, papa and grandpa have taught me how to fight. [Though her grandpa was more interested in spoiling her rotten in other ways, he does still know a thing or two at his age.] It looks like your flashlight is broken. Maybe you should stick close to me until we can find another one.

But you are also without.

[The better option then would be for both of them to find another flashlight, if that's the case. He can't allow her to be harmed, particularly for his sake.]

I have a good sense of direction. [Confident! Even with her talent, it's probably best to get off the streets. There should be more flashlights at his place, too.] Follow me and we can find one at-- [His place, he intends to say. But before he can finish his face connects with a low-lying branch. Hands lifting up to his nose, his eyes water immediately.

Ouch...]

B-Be careful of the branches.

[Before she can warn him of the branch he's about to run into, there's a resounding smack and Ai winces in sympathy. With one hand wrapped around the flashlight, she reaches out to grab Kija's arm and gently guide him away from the tree and it's attacking branches.]

I've got extremely good eyesight. I can guide us away from here. [Well, it's not a lie but isn't the entire truth.]

Just tell me where you're trying to go.

[Both of them trying to protect the other, it's a little silly.]

[Deal with it because this is just how it is at the moment. She shifts her grip and reaches for his hand rather than simply tug him around by his arm.]

Come on, then. It's this way. [Ai starts leading them, away from the tree. She looks over her shoulder at him and there's a hint of a smile on her face that can probably be heard in the light-heartedness of her next words.] I promise I won't walk you into anything.

[Somehow this seems backwards. He stiffens just slightly when her hand falls over his left one. It's only because she can see better in the dark, he reminds himself. It isn't the same as some of the many situations at home.

Although he feels somewhat defensive at her final remark.]

I-I would not do so again! [ One time-! Swallowing, he focuses his attention ahead, eyes straining to make something- anything- out in the darkness. Quietly he sighs after a moment. He really can't see anything no matter how hard he tries. It's a wonder that she can at all.

Clearing his throat, he keeps his voice low so as not to attract unwanted attention to themselves.]

You seemed upset when we collided. [An opening? She doesn't have to expand on it if she doesn't want to. She just seems in control of herself now, and so he wonders what it is that spooked her so before.]

[Once he can find his own way, Ai won't go around holding his hand. She simply thought this was more polite than yanking at his arm. This way he can tug back if need be.]

It's not as if it's your fault that it's dark out. Or that your flashlight broke. [That second one is technically her fault since she smacked into him. If she hadn't, he'd still have one.

Ai is careful to avoid any of the creatures while aiming towards the nearest store that probably has flashlights.

She's quiet for a moment at that.]
I saw something... disturbing. Except it wasn't real.

[Still seeing it out of the corner of her eye.] I believe it was brought on by the wasp's venom.

[Venom...? In the dark his eyes open wide. Not only had she been stung by one of those evil creatures, but she was still on her feet. The wound had to be large and aggravated, considering their size. He pauses in order to draw her to a stop, concerned.]

If you were stung, then it would be more prudent to get you to a doctor. [It could be dangerous otherwise, she's already confessed to seeing things.] You could be in danger if something is not done about it's venom. I would not wish for you to become ill or worse.

[Zero has been the opposite, out and around, assisting anyone who may need it. He hasn't been left completely untouched, having found himself not once but twice, already, within one of the fear hot spots, but he's pressed through to the best of his ability. With nothing in the immediate area, he didn't let the suddenly overwhelming feeling get to him for too long.

. . . Although, the raptors, on the other hand, haven't been affecting him as much. He heard about them on his first day here. Not that he was actually expecting to see them around, but it's better than it coming out of nowhere.

He hears Ai before he sees her. There's no need for a pureblood to be fearful in the face of danger, but in a place where anything at all can happen, he isn't going to just let this be.

Zero moves out of her way a second too late. He catches her to try and slow her down. Only with one hand, as the other is currently more in a claw-like state which, along with its elongated and razor-like nails are covered in blood. None of it which is his.]

Ai, hey— calm down, it's all right.

[Ai isn't focused enough on her surroundings to not realize that Zero is right there so there's no slowing down before she barrels straight into him. It isn't what she's been taught growing up and one of the individuals who taught her that currently has a grip on her arm. Despite the fear holding on to her and the shame of forgetting what he's taught her, Ai is relieved at his presence.

It's settling in a way that it hasn't been since she was small - before she had developed non-familial feelings for him. Sometimes when Ai had nightmares, she would seek out her mother and Zero would be there too. There was a reason that she called him 'papa' growing up.

She takes comfort in the hand on her arm, not at all worried about the other one.]

Father was... [Her voice is still shaky and her eyes dart behind her from where she came from. Only there isn't anything there. Not even any remaining traces.

A deep breath in to try to calm her nerves. Unlike all of the adults in her life, Ai has yet to actually face any danger. The biggest problem so far have been the Day Class students trying to get close to the Night Class ones. Not that she'd been afraid of the dinosaurs or giant bugs but that image of her father certainly had shaken her up.]

There's something about the wasp's venom, best to not get stung by them.

[Zero is only barely able to keep them from completely crashing to the ground, though it definitely could have happened.

He follows her gaze regardless. Hallucinations? Somehow he isn't very surprised by that, either. His focus returns to her right after, frowning a little.]

I've come across a number of them already, but that's good to know. Thanks.

Are you okay, otherwise. . .? We should probably keep moving.

[If she'd put any actual strength into her run, they probably would be a pile of limbs on the ground. But it wasn't as if Ai was attempting to tackle someone, just flee from the hallucination of her father.

Most people would attempt to avoid being stung by the wasps in the first place considering how huge they were. It meant their stingers were that much bigger and would leave a good-sized hole behind. With her healing capabilities, Ai was less worried about the wound and more concerned with the venom's affects - as should her mother and Zero.]

I'm fine. [There's a slight hitch in her voice as something seems to catch her gaze somewhere over Zero's shoulder but Ai is silently telling herself that it isn't real. A hand comes up to allow her fingers to curl in the hem of Zero's shirt as a focusing point. This was real. The feel of the fabric gripped in her hand, the warmth of the person standing next to her - not what her eyes were seeing.]

Let's go.

[If she just hangs on to what's real, then she won't get lost in what isn't.]

[But she isn't. Maybe to a degree, but as he's been learning about her, it's clear that she does take after Yuuki in ways. As if that's at all surprising. He also can tell the way she isn't fully focused on his gaze in turn, but isn't going to remark on it.

What he will do is remain extra alert, wanting to give her more time to fully reorient herself. The way she grasps onto his shirt is also very reminiscent.]

How long have you been out?

[He isn't even sure whereabouts Yuuki is at the moment. Although he does trust she can take care of herself, there's no telling what may happen, considering what happened with Ai.

For a moment Zero mentally hesitates, before trying something. His clawed hand moves towards Bloody Rose which is tucked into his waistband. It's only a touch, however; although it has a full magazine, and even despite the current situation, he's being mindful of just how much he may use it. Which he will be, because it can be wielded in more than one way.

Slow to start, a small tangle of metallic rose vines emerge from the gun. He seems immune to the fact that parts creep beneath his skin. They begin to coil around his arm and form into a spear within his grip, soon at the ready.

He's unsure just how large he can build them up to, here, or how long he can keep them out, as it's his first time actually having a need for them, here, but he needs to try.

It leaves him thinking of Ai (and Yuuki), as well.]

How are you with your abilities? Yuuki said that too much use leaves her fatigued. Have you been fighting a lot?

[Considering who she was raised by, it's no wonder that she's a lot like Yuuki. Give it time and he'll see how Ai is like Kaname as well. Now is not that time though.

She will just have to rely on him to determine what is real and what isn't. Zero won't steer her into trouble.]

An hour, maybe. I was wandering about.

[Yes, at night. Most of the time she gets up when the sun sets and lingers long until it's risen to ensure the safety of all of the students. As of yet, Ai hasn't changed that schedule so she's awake all night long still. Good thing robots run most of the shops so she can come and go whenever.

She watches as the vines shift and twist, preferring that sight than to anything her own mind and fears could come up with. It isn't a new thing to see, though Ai also hasn't had much reason to see him work.]

I'm all right, I've been keeping things simple. [Striking enemies with her hands where she can and conserving her strength and energy.]

[His thoughts and feelings, new as she still is in his life, won't change even when her resemblance to that man does begin to show. Of course they wouldn't. He already has naturally taken to guiding her to the best of his ability, at least in this place. There's much he's yet to learn about her.

There's just a nod to her reply.]

A bit less than me, then.

[He doesn't need to continue speaking to insinuate that he's been assisting wherever possible. The scent of blood is hanging in the air, however at the least it's not completely saturating it.]

Good. Hopefully nothing more will be needed.

[ —his words briefly cut short when a group of three raptors head towards them. Zero pivots on his feet before cutting them down in one fluid strike with the gnarled metallic thorns of the spear, all within the blink of an eye. It's just enough to get all three. It's lucky that the creatures aren't much larger. He gives his arm a good shake to get rid of some of the dripping blood.]

[It doesn't matter if the two of them don't have the memories of raising her, they are still essentially the same. That is something she's learning as she spends more time with them. Younger, less experienced in some areas but at the core they're the same.

She doesn't even need him to say anything because Ai knows that both of her parents would be out here - protecting others. Just like she was. At the first sign of trouble, both of them would spring into action.

The scent of blood is permeating the air but it's more monster blood than human or vampire.

At the moment, Ai knows that she's potentially dangerous. If she lashed out at something there is a chance that it's a hallucination and Ai could strike an innocent bystander instead.

Which is why when the raptors come, she simply turns so that she can keep that grip on his shirt but doesn't react. Zero can take care of it and he does.]

[Obviously they are. Zero can't say he ever in his life could have imagined he'd be fighting dinosaurs, but here he is.

In the moments after, though, he turns back to face her, frowning again. There's something about her that clearly reads that she's still not fully back to herself.]

. . . Let's go indoors for a little so you can relax.

[She could do with some quiet.

There's nothing to debate, should she want to. It's spoken in silence by the way his other hand moves to take the one she's holding onto his shirt with.]

[Fairly certain that's something they'd ever imagine twenty years later either. Really, who would imagine fighting dinosaurs?

It seems unfair. That he only just met her and yet is capable of reading her with one look. She blames the fact that she looks so much like Yuuki. Part of her wants to rebel for that fact alone but knows it wouldn't do much good. Going indoors won't help Ai escape her hallucinations but it's a good place to go to wait for the toxin to be eliminated.]

Fine. [She almost irritably huffs the word but refrains. Barely. It's clear from her face that she wanted to, though.

What she does do is try not to focus on his hand holding hers. If this is how it's going to be, it's going to be on her terms. So Ai takes the lead, trusting that Zero will ensure to be the judge on what's real and what's not.]

This way. [Deciding on a destination, Ai starts moving again.]

[This again. Watching as the buzzing wasp splits in two to fall lifelessly to the ground below, she frowns heavily, Artemis lowering to her side. Once upon a time something like this happened not all that long ago. At least not to her, but she's better prepared for it this time. That's what she tells herself at least.

While a part of her is reluctant to be out-- she can remember all too well the terrible experience last time. The sensation of being devoured alive within the fangs of a gigantic monster, and the crippling fear that had frozen her in place. There's no way she's ready to face that again. Even now the memory is chilling. But it was an illusion. And she reminds herself of that each time fear begins to lift the hairs on the back of her neck.

And what's more, this isn't about her. Not just because of her ability to see in the dark, or her supernatural abilities, she's one of the best equipped to be out here now. All because she does have experience with this creature. This- thing, whatever it can be called. Right now, the most important thing she and the rest of the defense force can do is simply get people off of the streets. If no one is out, then there's no need for them to be out either, except in the event of an emergency.

But things never go that smoothly.

It's the sound of a voice that draws her attention from her thoughts, and a familiar one at that. High up in the branches of a tree, Yuuki's eyes widen.

Ai...

Panic seizes her heart. Without a second's thought she moves. In a blur of motion she's weightless, out the tree and rushing to her side in seconds. She catches her as she bowls forward, her free hand lifting to catch one of her arms, forcing her to a stop.]

[There hasn't been a lot of things to fear in Ai's life. She had so many people there to look after her, protect her from whatever might go bump in the night. Her mother was always there no matter what the situation. If a nightmare took hold, all Ai had to do was shuffle out of bed and out to find her mother. Sometimes not even that much happened before comforting, familiar, safe and loving arms wrapped around her.

Every time her mother would hold her and soothe away her fears with a hand moving through her hair. It happened no matter what age she was. These days Ai just didn't feel the need to crawl into her mother's bed after a bad dream and wake her up. Instead she'd make herself a cup of tea and sit wrapped in the fluffiest blanket they had until Yuuki found her like that. Then they'd snuggle together.

So it's only natural that the moment she catches the scent of her mother, Ai's fear starts to dissipate. Then they collide and it's not the big bed she used to crawl into or the warm, cozy blanket but it's enough. It's more than enough to help Ai calm her nerves.

Her mother's voice is soothing and Ai leans into her.]

[To her ears the term is so foreign and new. Something she has never once imagined being called. It throws her a little, but not so much that her grip loosens. Instead, she shifts carefully as Ai leans in, seeking comfort. Yuuki's solid grasp upon her arm disappears now that she's stopped running, and wraps around her petite frame in a firm hug. Artemis shrinks, returning to a less threatening state, and she slips it within a bag at her side so that Ai has her full attention. Her voice is a soft, comforting whisper]

Shh. It's okay now. It's all right.

[Drawing her in, Yuuki's hand softly cradles her head against her, fingers stroking through the soft, silky curls of her hair. Everything is fine now, the touch seems to say, gently petting. Her grip lightly tightens, and it's only after she's heard her heart calm fractionally does Yuuki pull back. Grasping hold of her arms, her brows knit while she searches her eyes.]

Listen, Ai. You shouldn't be out here right now. It's dangerous, even for you. [And she's fully aware of the power and abilities she possesses. She knows-- she's seen that she's a capable woman. But worry nearly makes Yuuki's hands tremble.] This isn't the first time this has happened before. A number of scary things are out here tonight. We need to get you back to the apartment.
