DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

"There are. You ride? I can, but's not really my thing. Side effect of having grown up in the fifty-first century, I guess!"

"Yeah. When I have the time to, at least. I helped to raise one of the horses at the stables at the Academy I attended."

"Well, you've got nothing but time here, sweetheart," he points out wryly. "You could probably earn some rehabilitation points looking after the horses too. Put them towards a proper gun?"

Being called 'sweetheart' might get a flat look. Really???

"I'd do that even if it didn't get me points." He probably will start doing so. "Apparently I accumulated enough the last time I was here to earn back Bloody Rose. Surprisingly it still was here when I arrived, since my roommate from that time kept it for me." A beat. "Although maybe I can get more ammunition with them."

The flat look more or less bypasses him. He's Jack. He calls everybody sweetheart.

"Well, there you are then, you've found yourself at least one other thing to occupy your time here, as well as patrolling for the DF," he smiles, and cocks an eyebrow. "Bloody Rose being... your gun?"

Instinctively intrigued. "Is there a story behind the name?"

"It had that name when it was given to me." He really doesn't know the entire story behind it, except for the fact that it was one of the two original weapons that the furnace produced. Which was around ten thousand years ago.

"Although it's also capable of producing metallic thorny rose vines. It's an anti-vampire weapon."

"Sounds like a pretty good explanation for the name!" he grins, with no clue about the ten thousand years ago part. "So it's for capturing vampires? Or can metal kill vampires from your reality?"

"Yes and no." It could really go both ways. "All weapons which can kill a vampire are made from a specific metal, created strictly for that reason. Normal ones still can inflict harm upon them, but don't cause any lasting damage. Meanwhile, even a small cut made by one of these can hurt, and take much longer to heal. The only way to really speed that up is if the vampire consumes fresh blood. Anti-vampire weapons are also incapable of harming humans."

He pauses, maybe faintly amused. "Not that it always takes one of these to apprehend a vampire, but they do come in handy."

"Good to know." He makes sure he pays attention to that, because it sounds like it could be important. "So, are there any other vampire from your world here? And does wood work on you as well as this specific metal?" Lifting his hands with a grin. "Obviously hoping I'm never going to need it, but considering the trouble we've had in the past, it would be good to know!"

Another pause, although this time a little more weighted. It only takes so long to make his decision though. "Yes, one other." Plenty of people already know that Yuuki is a vampire. "She's the least vampire-like vampire there is." Zero is biased, but it's also beyond true.

"Wood?" Oh. "You mean like a stake. No, not really. Nor does garlic, holy water, or anything religious, in general, affect us. Where I'm from, that's only in fiction. The sun can leave us very fatigued, to the point of passing out, but we won't burst into flames if exposed." The latter of which should be very obvious, considering where they are right now. ". . .Although decapitation will work, at least on most vampires."

Jack does know Yuuki is a vampire (again, Defence Force) but he doesn't know much about her so he's not immediately making the connection that she's who Zero is talking about. So, being Jack and completely unabashed by social conventions, he asks. "And her name is...?"

He needs to know this stuff. "So you're really different. I did quite a lot of research back while Spike was being a problem, so I'm aware there are a lot of differences between vampires from different worlds, but damn, it's hard to keep track of which is which!" A rueful grin, to try to avoid dragging the mood down too far. "Thank you for telling me. I know it can't be easy to just hand over your weaknesses to someone you never met before."

"Yuuki Kuran. She's also on the Defense Force, however on Kitty's team."

A light shrug. "I guess we are. Most of the vampire population where I'm from were also simply born that way, too. Although ex-humans do also exist." He's fine with all of this, really. "If I ever do end up acting differently than normal, and am causing issues, then do what you can to apprehend me. I already expect that," he states after, as calm as ever.

Jack nods, taking note of the information and deciding he really needs some sort of a list or diagram for this sort of thing. Possibly someone like Reid or Sam already have one. He should ask.

And he's more than a little relieved by Zero's offer, studying the young man with definite appreciation and nodding slowly. "Thanks, good to hear." He grins. "I hope your readiness to accept that means we'll never have to worry about it!"

He finishes up his mead and sets the cup down with satisfaction, lunch finished. "Sorry to have turned this into a bit of an inquisition! Is there anything you wanted to ask me, while we're at it?"

"Yeah, hopefully not." A faint, though wry look. "And if you ever have trouble doing so, just ask Yuuki. She has more than enough power to take me down." Somehow those words almost come out fondly. It's only the truth, though. She has an entire arsenal of abilities at her fingertips. Far more than Zero is capable of, himself.

A light shake of his head. "It's all right. None that immediately come to mind."

"Noted," he nods again, somewhat intrigued and making a mental note to look up Yuuki at some point in the not too distant future.

"Well, in that case, I'll stop interrogating you and leave you to enjoy the festivities!" he smiles, getting to his feet. "Well, unless you fancy trying your hand - or, rather, ass - at rövkrok?"

He gets up as well. ". . .No. I'm good." He'll stick to the food, thank you very much.

"See you around, then."

Jack laughs. "Okay, then. Good meeting you, Zero. See you around!"

And he's off, to go and see who else he can coax into wrestling with him.
