DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

[A festival. Great. The longevity of the prison wasn't something that needed to be celebrated. But still, he was here and checking things out.

Predictably, Nico did not dress up for this one.

He spends most of his time in Sector 5, mostly just watching, though he does try a bit of archery. It's been ages since he even attempted to fire an arrow, so he's not very good at it. The less violent games hold more of his attention. Nine Men's Morris was fairly common in the Roman camp.

He'll even turn up at the dance. And he's not dressing up for that either.]

[Is this what you want to dance with, Nico? Is it? IS IT!?]

You dressed like Nico.

[He may have been a little absent the last day or so because Yuuki and Zero came back and it was a thing, but dancing with boyfriends is a thing too, right?]

[That sure is a costume... ]

Then I did something right today. I am Nico. You're a ... musketeer?

[Dancing with boyfriends is a thing. Sure. As long as it's not too lively...]

Is that what it is? I kind of thought it looked familiar. Huh. [Maybe that makes it cooler?]

I think that's what it is. [He saw pictures in a book once.] It suits you.

Are you having fun?

Thanks. Yeah, it's been pretty good so far. I skipped the pig eating though. [This is where things get romantic, right?]

I didn't know there was pig eating... [You know how to sweep a guy off his feet, Yuuri.] I mostly stuck with the games. I still suck at archery.

It looked just like a whole pig. [Poor little oink oink.]

I wasn't very good at those either. I guess they just don't make games of the stuff we're good at. They'd probably be too easy to be fun then anyway.

Did it have a face? [That's not so unusual, you know. They're cooked like that sometimes...]

I don't know, I did alright with the board games.

[Sarah sits across from him, giving Nico a look of slight disappointment.]

You're not dressed!

[But then in the next breath, she takes a look at the table and her eyes widen as they take in Nine Men's Morris.]

Do you know how to play? Could you teach me?

[Maybe he would have dressed up if he had known everyone was going to comment on his not being dressed up.]

I don't like dressing up...

[He's glad when her focus turns to the game.]

I do. I stayed in a Roman camp for a time, and this game was fairly common there. I can show you.

Why not? [Sarah looks at him as though he has two heads. How could anyone not like dressing up in costumes.

But she focuses on the game instead.]

Sure. I'd love to learn.

[Because it's stupid...

Not going to say that. Nope. He shakes his head and starts sorting the pieces for the game instead.]

You can start. First, we each place one piece at a time on the board. If you manage to line up any three of yours, horizontally or diagonally, then I lose one of mine. Same goes for me.

[Nope. Don't say that to Sarah. Who is so excited to be dressed up!]

That sounds simple enough. [Sarah you sweet summer child.] Right. I can place it anywhere? [She waited for his confirmation before placing her marker in the most obvious spot she possibly could.]

[info]nico_di_angelo

That's right. [Nico sets his first piece down, in a not so obvious spot. He's not the greatest strategist, but he knows how to play a game. (Spending a great number of years doing nothing but playing them helps.)]

That concept is pretty simple. You win when you have your opponent down to two pieces.

{Sarah places a second piece next to her first.]

[Too obvious. He places his next piece next to hers, blocking her from forming a mill.]

Do you have games like this on your world?
