DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

"Oh, that thing..." She pauses, as if chewing on her answer, if it's entirely kosher of her to be talking like this but they do so much exciting work and rarely get any sort of credit for it that she can't help herself. She's a nerd, okay? A nerd who never gets to nerd out.

"Well, since I'm sure you've already figured it out... that's usually on purpose. We do want to give you ample opportunity to learn more about yourself and each other and what better way to do that than allow you to literally walk a mile in someone else's shoes?"

"And did you get what you wanted from it?" he asks, with a faint note of bitterness. "Did you have fun watching us go round vamping out and almost killing our boyfriends, or getting poisoned with dairy?"

Jack hasn't had a particularly great experience with body-swapping so far.

"Jack... you misunderstand." She coos, softly, motherly.

"It's not for our benefit. It's for yours. If this was merely for our entertainment you would have nothing but ice cream parties and rubber duck rains all day long... but this isn't just for fun. It's for you, so you can understand yourself better. Understand others better."

She tilts her head, a little concerned.

"Do you understand? Do you believe me?"

That softly condescending attitude immediately puts his back up, but he tries to get past it as best he can because, disguised as banter or not, this is probably the single most informative few minutes he's had since he arrived in the dome and he doesn't want to blow it.

He studies her for a moment. "Do you really believe that yourself? Or is it just another game, to try and get us to believe it?"

His instinct is still that this is all either just one big game to them, or an experiment. Or both, of course.

Her concerned expression takes a turn for the sad, perhaps even inching on apologetic. Taking a step closer she reaches up to cup his cheek, if he'll let her.

"What reason could I possibly have to lie to you, after all this?"

He doesn't stop her touching him, though he does stiffen slightly for an instant before forcing himself to relax again. His own hand comes up to cover hers and gently pull it down away from his face, as he gives her a wry, faintly amused smile.

"Honestly? I can think of a billion or so reasons. Most of them to do with the fact that you hold all the cards here and there's nothing we can do about it even if you are lying."

Spoilsport. Your boyfriend is a lot more accommodating, she'll have you know. Still, she tries to keep her expressions in check, despite the pitch black leaking into her eyes and the faint buzz of a swarm seeping through her voice.

"It could be worse, you know. We could've decided it was better that you didn't know... could've decided it was better to let dead little boys stay dead."

His boyfriend is a lot more polite about a lot of things. Jack has lived long enough that he gets tired of being played and lets it show through.

He's also lived long enough, however, to recognise the signs of someone equally letting their veil drop - and when he's being threatened.

"Well, then," he drawls slowly, and in a way it's a relief to drop the charade, however entertaining the banter has been. "I guess I know where I stand." His lips twitch slightly, his eyes holding hers, strong and challenging even while overtly he backed down. "I am, of course, extremely grateful to you for changing the rules on death here. That you choose to give, as well as to take away."

It would be so easy to scare him. A stroke of a key, barely that, a tiny little change to a string of code and she could utterly break everything he's ever believed in and that's exactly why she isn't doing it. They're not villains here. They're not. They have reasons and motivations and the well-being of the inmates at heart — unlike those assholes over at Squall — and so she doesn't do a single thing but look back at him, eyes softening, pronoun going back from plural to singular.

That's always difficult. Remembering she's one, not many.

"Good. Then we have an agreement."

His chin lifts slightly. "I guess we do," he says evenly. And, because he knows he's not going to get any more out of this encounter, he decides it's probably time to end it.

"Well, it's been fascinating to meet you at last," he says smoothly, and it's not even a lie. It really has been fascinating. "But I do feel like I have a few more asses to kick at rövkrok before the day is out." A formal inclination of his head, along the same lines as his initial greeting. "My lady."
