DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

"Right." From anyone whom he's only just met here in Marina, it could confuse anyone. "That makes sense. The majority of vampires where I'm from were born as such." His latter question doesn't have him pausing, because it isn't as if the story is still fresh and an open wound, however it also isn't something he goes around telling. "Five years ago. I was thirteen."

"Wow, that sounds harsh." A faint, self-deprecating grin. "I was in my thirties when I had my life turned upside down, and that was hard enough. I can't imagine having to go through something like that in your early teens!"

How harsh. Although it doesn't seem to faze him. "It is what it is. I had to grow up fast as it was. It obviously wasn't easy, but I don't focus on the past anymore.

What were your circumstances. . .?"

It doesn't seem to faze him, and Jack absorbs that too, before chuckling at the question. "Well, I'm not a vampire, but I got turned immortal so I guess there are some similarities. A different kind of immortal, though. I can still die - I died that first time - but I come back, every time." He shrugs. "Not that even that's unique any more, not here, but it does mean I've lived over a century and a half so I've managed to accumulate a fair bit of experience, at least!"

Interesting. The lifespan part somewhat reminds him of how some hunters can live longer due to having more vampire DNA in their system than usual, but obviously this is quite different.

A bit wryly, then. "So that's why you commented on accuracy of this festival thing, huh?"

"Kind of. That experience actually comes from earlier in my life when I was a time-traveller, which I guess is the other kind of knowledge I can bring to any party. I was born in the fifty-first century and had a job which required me to travel back to a lot of different time periods, so - yeah." He glances about, and grins. "I spent some time in the Renaissance. It really wasn't a lot like this!"

Time travel. His eyes (just) slightly widen before he seems a little amused. "That's the first time I've ever heard about actual time travel, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised by now." Not that he's even been here for a single week, but still.

"I can't say I ever even learned about that time period, to start with, so I have no real guess. What was it like? If you don't mind my asking."

Jack grins. "A lot of new ideas to get used to here, huh?" He inclines his head. "Vampires and demons were new to me when I got here, so I know what that's like!"

He picks up his mead and glances around before taking a long swig. "Well, the mead's fairly accurate. But generally? It was all a lot more dirty. And smelly. This is like a movie-set, sanitised version."

Heh. "There is. I've just decided to not hold many expectations, and keep an open mind." No matter how outrageous some things may prove to be.

". . . I think I can see that being the case." A beat as he recalls that quote-unquote wrestling game. "And what of the activities?" Possibly rhetorical.

"Very sensible," he agrees, and then grins, quirking an eyebrow. "Well, I have to say I never heard of rövkrok before today, but I suspect that's from a fairly specific part of the world that I didn't visit."

A beat. "I strongly suspect there's also not nearly enough alcohol involved in most such games. Again - all a bit too clean and tidy for realism!"

"For whatever reason, that's a relief." Rather dryly said, but more so his reply to follow. "They certainly had alcohol in mind when it comes to the archery and jousting." Sigh. "Not that I should be surprised by that."

"Well, yeah, I guess alcohol would certainly make the foam swords and rubber lances a lot more fun!" Jack grins.

". . . It's only been three days and I'm already really missing what target practice should actually be like." Not that he's at all in need of actual practice, but that's beside the point.

"Yeah... Give yourself time. In no time at all you'll have settled in so far and got used to the peace and quiet that you'll almost forget to go and work on your target practice."

"Well, you've got nothing but time here, sweetheart," he points out wryly. "You could probably earn some rehabilitation points looking after the horses too. Put them towards a proper gun?"

Being called 'sweetheart' might get a flat look. Really???

"I'd do that even if it didn't get me points." He probably will start doing so. "Apparently I accumulated enough the last time I was here to earn back Bloody Rose. Surprisingly it still was here when I arrived, since my roommate from that time kept it for me." A beat. "Although maybe I can get more ammunition with them."

The flat look more or less bypasses him. He's Jack. He calls everybody sweetheart.

"Well, there you are then, you've found yourself at least one other thing to occupy your time here, as well as patrolling for the DF," he smiles, and cocks an eyebrow. "Bloody Rose being... your gun?"

Instinctively intrigued. "Is there a story behind the name?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]instrumented
2016-04-17 04:08 am UTC (link)
"It had that name when it was given to me." He really doesn't know the entire story behind it, except for the fact that it was one of the two original weapons that the furnace produced. Which was around ten thousand years ago.

"Although it's also capable of producing metallic thorny rose vines. It's an anti-vampire weapon."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]foreverjack
2016-04-18 07:38 am UTC (link)
"Sounds like a pretty good explanation for the name!" he grins, with no clue about the ten thousand years ago part. "So it's for capturing vampires? Or can metal kill vampires from your reality?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]instrumented
2016-04-18 09:01 am UTC (link)
"Yes and no." It could really go both ways. "All weapons which can kill a vampire are made from a specific metal, created strictly for that reason. Normal ones still can inflict harm upon them, but don't cause any lasting damage. Meanwhile, even a small cut made by one of these can hurt, and take much longer to heal. The only way to really speed that up is if the vampire consumes fresh blood. Anti-vampire weapons are also incapable of harming humans."

He pauses, maybe faintly amused. "Not that it always takes one of these to apprehend a vampire, but they do come in handy."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]foreverjack
2016-04-19 08:33 pm UTC (link)
"Good to know." He makes sure he pays attention to that, because it sounds like it could be important. "So, are there any other vampire from your world here? And does wood work on you as well as this specific metal?" Lifting his hands with a grin. "Obviously hoping I'm never going to need it, but considering the trouble we've had in the past, it would be good to know!"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Another pause, although this time a little more weighted. It only takes so long to make his decision though. "Yes, one other." Plenty of people already know that Yuuki is a vampire. "She's the least vampire-like vampire there is." Zero is biased, but it's also beyond true.

"Wood?" Oh. "You mean like a stake. No, not really. Nor does garlic, holy water, or anything religious, in general, affect us. Where I'm from, that's only in fiction. The sun can leave us very fatigued, to the point of passing out, but we won't burst into flames if exposed." The latter of which should be very obvious, considering where they are right now. ". . .Although decapitation will work, at least on most vampires."
