DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

An honor and a duty? How so? [And does your hand breath fire is the real question here.]

[He's more than happy enough to explain.]

The power is a sacred one. The dragon gods originally gave four noble human beings the power needed to protect their king, who descended to earth in order to live and rule among humans. [Eyes closing, he continues the story soberly.]

Those four human beings became known as dragon warriors. Mankind can be wicked however. Eventually the king died, and it left the four warriors without a king to follow. Their blood was tied to both each other, as well as King Hiryuu. It is an unbreakable bond, and one that pledges our allegiance to our king.

[Lifting a hand up, he gently touches his chest.] Thousands of years later, that blood has continued to be passed down to one individual within each dragon clan, even unto me. It was preserved so that the day King Hiryuu was reborn, we would carry on the legacy of our ancestors to serve and protect the king, where our many predecessors were never given the opportunity.

[That is why it is not just a duty, but an honor. His father, and the many other Hakuryuu before him all died without having been able to fulfill their own wish, except to pass on the power so that one day someone would be there for the king once more. That day has come, and with it he carries the unfulfilled wishes and desires of all who came before him.]

King Hiryuu has been reborn, and I have been privileged with the opportunity to serve beneath her.

I think I understand what that feels like, to want to protect someone so badly. [She understands what it feels like to fail, too but she won't mention that.] It must have been very sad for all your ancestors to be unable to do so.

I have truly been blessed. [He knows. And he'll be the first one to admit it. Above his predecessors, and even his other fellow dragon... his life has seen comfort and love. Unconsciously, a hand lifts over his shoulder to rub at his back.]

I would like to clear up any one of the regrets that they may have experienced in life. I know that for them it must have been very challenging. [It had broken his father's spirit. But that is all the more reason that he should not take one day that he spends with his master for granted.]

I think that is a very admirable goal. I hope you succeed. [She smiles brightly but after a moment it fades just a bit.] I had someone I wanted to protect, someone who was very precious to me even if I did not always understand why. I think the ability to care about people and to stand alongside them is a very important part of being human.

[Had, she says. Does that mean that person isn’t around for her to look after any more? Because that person is not here? Or because they are truly gone? He studies her quietly a moment. To lose that important someone is not something that Kija can even allow himself to imagine.

He doesn't really know her... but he hopes that isn't the case.]

I suppose that is right. [Even without a bond. After all, Hak and the princess are very close too...]

People cannot help but to simply be drawn to forming connections to others.
