DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

It is but I don't have anything to wager yet. Or a decicred to flip.

[ It's on Reid. Still not exactly Han's favorite person, but he's making an effort to stay civil. Kiss or lies or not, Han figures it was a pretty big deal that Leia made a friend here in the first place. He's not gonna make things worse by being the jealous loser he was on Bakura. ]

[ Good man, especially since the situation is more complicated than just a guy lying to get a kiss from his favorite childhood princess but who even has the time to get into that. ]

Lucky for you... [ He always carries a coin. There's a little flourish in the way he takes it out. ] Heads or tails?

Heads.

[ The flourish makes him think of Lando. Which is slightly distressing, considering how good Lando is at games like this. ]

[ Oh, you should be scared. Maybe next time he'll make it magically appear from your ear.

He flicks the coin, catching it with ease and showing off the result. For transparency, of course. It's not like he'd cheat. ]

Heads. You start.

[ The ear thing wouldn't be too bad. He was a magician's assistance once, can't be worse than the outfit he'd worn for it.

He nods, though, and places his piece. The first move is about as neutral as you can get, and now Han will have to play defense. ]
Your turn, kid.

[ This is a guy who's played more than 100 000 games of chess, half of those against himself, and he's won more than he's lost (well, lately). Still he finds himself pausing mid-move. ]

Kid? [ Sensitive about his age? You bet. ]

Sorry. [ Not really. It's actually kinda nice to know something that gets under this guy's skin. ] Guess it's just a habit.

[ Oh, there's so much. So many things. Now that he's a little off-kilter, it'll probably be even easier to find more of those things. He makes his move, but he's clearly not entirely in the game. ]

How old are you now, anyway?

[ Speaking of getting under skin... Han places his piece, opting for a neutral strategy of spreading out so he can't be blocked easily. ]

Thirty-two, if you don't count the year I got to spend as a wall ornament.

[ You can tell a lot from the way a person plays. Aggressor, defendant, neutral... this is pretty much what he expected at this stage of the game, and he'll adjust accordingly, trying to force Han into more aggressive play. ]

So you're only a year older than me.

If you say so. [ Han can't exactly argue the point, doesn't even want to, but he can move to block Reid. ]

I know so.

[ A weird point to argue, but he's in the mood for an argument. Frowning a bit at being blocked, he makes a counter move. ]

So you're worried I'm gonna call you 'kid' again.

[ If it's not one it has to be the other, obviously. Reid doesn't have to answer, Han is very sure that he's right. ]

No no, that's fine. I'm underestimated by old men on a near daily basis, back home. Kind of works in my favor.

Hey, if you really want me to bring up carbonite and the generational split of whether you shot Greedo first or not, I can. Kind of thought you wouldn't like that, though.

[ Greedo? Han can't even remember which of them fired first, and he doesn't particularly care. It's kind of surprising that that's all Reid is coming at him with, though. ]

Don't hold back because of my feelings. I'm an old man, remember? I can take it. [ Okay, maybe he's also trying to goad Reid into telling him more about the movies, or at least Han's role in them. ]

It's not you I'm concerned about.

[ Yeah, that's good and cryptic. Way to go, profiler. Truth be told he's keeping this to himself partly because what good could come from talking about it and partly because he wants the experiences separated. Meeting your childhood hero and realizing he doesn't measure up? Yeah, he'll pass on that if he can. ]

[ He considers that cryptic response for a second longer than he probably needs to. Mostly to debate internally on whether it's about Leia or-- ]

I already said I wasn't gonna hit you. [ It's his best guess, and he sounds a little disappointed that the goading didn't work as well as he wanted it to. ]

Again, not what I'm concerned about. [ He's been hit before. Hell, he's been shot before. He's died, if only for a moment. Physical pain doesn't scare him as much as it may seem. ]

Do you know what I do for a living back home?

[ That's actually not something Han had asked about. He got a name, a brief summary of what had happened here, and he hadn't wanted to know beyond that. ]

No. You gonna tell me?

I'm a criminal profiler. [ And since he's already had to explain that job title to nearly everyone he's met: ]

That means I spend my days working out how criminals think. Not just criminals — the worst serial killers the world has seen. I spend time inside their heads, thinking how they think, finding the motivation for why they cut up prostitutes or kidnap children or glue their victims eyes wide open. I interview them, I walk through their crime scenes and I look at pictures of what they've done so I can find whatever miniscule piece of evidence they left behind. All so we can find them and stop them.

The things I've learned from the movies? It's just events. It doesn't really tell me anything about you as a person. Certainly not as much as this game tells me right now.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]bloodstriped

[ That's some job. As much as Han might not like the vague and not even really there implication of him being a criminal, he can't hold it against a guy that apparently stops criminals worse than he ever was.

Still, he's suddenly uncomfortable under the weight of feeling scrutinized. ]

And what does the game say, other than that I'm winning?
