DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Well I don't know, I didn't expect you to know the waltz. [And yet he had surprised her with that. Who knows what he has up his sleeve. Yet despite that he pulls her out to dance. Shouldn't be difficult, he says, just like that...?

Glancing up at him, she's amazed that he can be so confident about something he doesn't have much experience in. And yet, for their first couple steps she's the one who takes a moment to catch her footing and match up to his.

A touch of color in her cheeks, she glances up to watch him as they move. They're actually doing well, the music light and even fun to move to. After the last couple days, and the silence between them, she doesn't know what to say to start.]

[Meanwhile, he seems to be focused upon her the entire time. Even with his guilt stiff heavily upon his shoulders from the other day, he's very content to just be within her presence (and to not see her in tears). He's glad she isn't still trying to completely avoid him.]

Yeah, that's true.

[He really doesn't have the experience. Zero can remember that every now and then there were little events held for the hunter community. Maybe a couple were ones where parents were encouraged to bring along their children. They begin training at a very young age, so it isn't all that strange. He picked up on the dance from watching the adults, however he learned a little from his mother. — Although personally, he went to just two of them. Even with Yagari watching over them, Zero far more preferred to remain at home with Ichiru. ]

I've never really heard music like this before. So it's as new to me as it is for Yuuki.

[Mostly. Regardless of music or setting, it's simply that she's the only one he wants to dance with.

He leads her into a twirl, aware of her footwork so that even if she does mess up a little, it won't leave her feeling awkward or the like.]

[The twirl is easy enough, and she spins into it just fine. Once she can more or less figure out his direction, she's good to follow. Overall, she's a decent dancer. And she got plenty more training from Ruka before she had been allowed to attend her introduction to society.

If anyone can be a scary teacher at times, it's Ruka.

Even as the music picks up, her own feet follow his, matching in time. She smiles a little as they twirl and move, before studying him again briefly.

Finally, after a moment she asks-]

Do you like your costume? I knew you wouldn't dress up otherwise. It's important up for occasions like this, though! Besides, you might get some rehabilitation points. You'll want those for Blood Rose.

[Her eyes widen.] AH-! Unless Yuuri-kun has that, too.

[She really is doing just fine. All he can hope for is that she's enjoying herself.]

Yeah, I do. [Honest] It isn't over the top or anything, like a lot of the ones I saw in some of the shops.

[He pauses, taking in the sight of her as much as he can.]

. . . We kind of match. [Did she mean for that? He smiles a bit, then.] You look really nice.

[another beat. that's right- ]

Ah. I did. He had some of my other belongings, too. [Clothes, mostly.]

Well... I guess because it's my own personal thoughts on fashion it makes sense that we'd match. [She did think this would look good on him, though. As for her, she worries it's a little gaudy but it's supposed to be fun.]

. . . That's good then. Prior to disappearing we really had only just gotten those belongings back. [Leave it to Yuuri to hold onto things for them.]It took a lot of points no thanks to Zero. [He had gotten her in trouble, after all.]

So then you've really met Yuuri-kun...

You did often pick out my clothes when we were younger.

[Something he can now look back on and feel a little amused over. It's not that he has absolutely no capability of dressing himself well. He just kind of didn't care. He's dine just fine on his own.]

What happened?

[Sorry, Yuuki, but your side remark catches him.]

I did. I had addressed the network asking who knew me before. He really seemed the most disappointed out of everyone when I said I forgot- [a beat] . . . but especially so when I mentioned I'd be finding my own place.

[His question has her fall silent, eyes uncomfortably glancing away. She lifts her shoulders in a small shrug.]

It... the wardens were just mistaken about a couple things.

[Twice. She was punished twice due to actions initiated by him. Only one occasion was a lot nicer than the other. The slight discomfort continues however, as well as the guilt.]

. . . Yeah. He would be. Only just very recently you had moved in with Yuuri-kun and I. But you had always been friends with him, too. [Her smile is sad though fond.] He's sort of like me. Only male. And taller. And also not a vampire. He's a demon instead.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

[There clearly is more that she isn't telling him if he's to judge by her demeanor. He probably shouldn't press, though.

A demon, though?]

I knew something felt different about him.

[It's more of an offhand comment than anything.

. . .]

I didn't mean to upset him.

[Or Yuuki.]

I said I'd still stop by every now and again. Maybe at some point I'll move in again.

[ (if that's okay with you.) he seems to say as well.]

. . . I'm glad you have a friend like him.

[ . . . It's a little awkward, dancing around the subject. Her mind absolutely refuses to allow her to focus in their first conversation however. It dances away almost immediately, like the opposite sides of a magnet, unable to connect.

Instead she focuses on Yuuri, something she can talk about. Even if it's with a small frown.]

Yuuri-kun would, I suppose. He cares deeply, and he's been here even longer than myself. [It still feels strange to think she left again.] He's lost a lot of important people here to him within the dimensional stabilizer. But Yuuri... [A small, fond smile rises into place.] He's been my best friend here. And no matter how many times I've disappeared and come back he's always kept a place for me. Even when I came back and couldn't remember anything.

Although both Zero and I have been enemies in the past, Yuuri reached out to you as well. So try to get along with him. He's a really beautiful person and he cares about you a lot, too.

[ . . . ] If he's invited you to stay, then it's an open invitation.

[It really is plenty obvious how they're continuing to skirt around the matters of just the other day. He doesn't like any of it. However he knows it's for the better. This isn't the time for it.

Zero listens to her in silence. As he said, to hear that Yuuki has friends here - even in general - is something he's grateful for. Even more so when it's someone like Yuuri. So maybe he doesn't know the other very well (that he had forgotten), he does seem like a good person. Something which Yuuki deserves more than anything.

At some point the quietude begins to linger more.]

It's been strange for people here to know me already. [He frowns a bit as well, brows knitting.] It would be better if I had remembered. I. . . should apologize to you, too, on that matter.

[Without really thinking, the hand within hers slightly shifts enough to lace their fingers. It's probably too bold of a move, but the risk has already been taken.

What he's about to say is more of a gamble, though. Not because of the words, but what it may instigate.]

I'll keep that in mind, then. [About the open invitation. However after he hesitates again.]

Although. . . I only will do so if you're the one who's okay with it.

[What makes everything more difficult is what he can't remember. Her heart is a complicated mess of emotions as her eyes shift down to stare at their interwoven fingers. He's doing this now, but doesn't remember having held hands like this here with her in the past. He can't remember the reason why they had both last been punished by the warden.

Of course she knows the pain all too well of lost memories, and the difficulty faced when moving forward with them. It would have been much less complicated if he remembered, too.

It's strange, though. When for so long they were at odds, and somehow it was only after she had taken his memories and he regained them that they become on good terms.]

It's fine. [Softly spoken, and with a faint smile. He can't remember their relationship anymore...but they had come so far.] I don't mind. It would be like before.

[Minus Hikaru...]

[Meanwhile it's a different sort of experience in regards to having gaps in his memory. For some time he wasn't fully cognizant of his own situation; it took Kaito, especially, to urge him on, telling him it wasn't just something related to a concussion. In the end he had overcome it all. Pushing past the ability of a pureblood- something which wasn't really new of him.

Here, though, it's not the same kind of circumstances at all.

Here he feels worse. Guilty, but not like the way he's been feeling over the truths he told only two days ago. He had been in Marina for such a great length of time, and can only assume he and Yuuki had become a close team. And now, for him, all of it is gone, leaving only her.

While at the same time he gives their hands a gentle squeeze, his heart and chest feel all too tight. He's thankful for her words, and for the consent, but it doesn't completely ease how he's feeling.]

I'll do that, then.

[It's all he can really say.]

Yuuri did say he still has a room for me.

[It seems at some point they stopped dancing.]

[A faint smile and a slight nod.]

Even if there wasn't... I feel that he'd accommodate it. [Somehow. There's so many things left unsaid between the two. Where can she even start? Her smile fades though, brows drawing down. A complicated expression crosses her delicate features.]

Hey... [She seems to struggle suddenly, her gaze lowering.] About the other day...

[ She glances away, her eyes falling off to the side.]

I'm sorry about the other day. I guess...[She sighs, closing her eyes.] I guess that I was just surprised that you didn't remember, and confused with my own memories feeling somehow hazy.

[There's no mention of the cause for upsetting her to begin with. She lifts a hand up to her head.]

The whole first day back is kind of a blur. I feel like a lot of upsetting things happened, but reflecting on it, I overreacted. And I...[She shakes her head, chagrined.] I shouldn't have just left you to fend for yourself on your first day. I'm embarrassed and upset with myself for it.

[They're continuing to work around the elephant in the room. It's all for the best, though, despite how much he still somewhat feels he needs to make one more comment on. Then again, telling her about what Aidou did to preserve Kuran isn't going to make anything better for Yuuki, nor change her mind.]

You're not to blame.

[His words possibly more ambiguous than they should be.]

You know I can manage.

[Even though this situation in particular has been more surreal and challenging than any he's ever really been in before.]

But. . . I forgive you for that. [If she maybe needs to hear it.] I know you were distressed by a number of things. And. . . again, I'm sorry that I didn't remember anything. It's not very fair to you at all.

[Nor is what he told her, but that's on a whole different level.

He pauses, again somewhat unsure of what he wants to say.]

I'd like to hope Yuuki and I can be a team again in this place. If it's okay for me to want to be by your side, even though I don't have any of my memories from last time.

[It helps to hear, no matter how disappointed with herself she is. The fact that he can act like nothing is wrong right now, is proof that out of the two of them, he's the better person. Although she shakes her head after a moment.]

No. It's not fair to you. [She really has no right to complain. Especially considering what she knows she does to him at home.]

I know what it's like to not remember things, or to have forgotten. It isn't fair for me to be upset at you for something out of your control. Especially... due to the fact that I know I took yours, once, too.

[Which she's ashamed to admit now.]

I'm not a good person to have on your side. I make mistakes all of the time. Really stupid mistakes... [Her eyes close] But I can't just push Zero away, either.

It's fine.

[He says anyway, brows still knit. They can agree to disagree. Both are stubborn enough that they'll just change their minds, which he knows he doesn't need to point out.]

I forgive you for that, as well.

[Over what she did to him, even if it's already been said. That point in their lives has been said and done. He's never felt betrayed by her (even if it doesn't go both ways).]

Has that ever stopped me before? [He faintly smiles.] Yuuki is simply Yuuki to me. Just like always.

[It's not exactly true either, though. It isn't as though things have always been fine between them. Just the last year at home is proof enough of that. She shakes her head, brows knit as she stares at his chest, gaze drawn inward.]

For a long time we didn't get along here. [While just very recently things had changed, there were still a number of painful memories, too.]

To be honest, it's still a surprise to me that Zero who can't remember anything here, and came from home, can say that kind of thing. Just a few weeks ago, you considered us enemies.

[His chest tightens as she speaks. Even when they weren't getting along, how they even were enemies, it isn't as though he ever downright hated her. She knows that. . . right? At least in the end. Still, what she says isn't exactly easy to respond to. He looks away as well.

Another apology is at the tip of his tongue, but he shouldn't continue to repeat himself.]

Time does change things.

Is it making you uncomfortable? [He can only hope not, however also prepare for being told the latter.] I don't know what else to say.

[She feels herself shaking her head before even thinking up a response. It isn't that persay- but it's still an adjustment. Even now she's still not sure what caused the change. For so long she had been hurt and tried to accept the fact that they were enemies. Suddenly it isn't like that anymore. It's a lot to adjust to after trying to train her heart not to ache anymore.

While their exchange might be a little awkward, she manages a small smile up at him.]

Then I'm glad for that, at least.

[I don't mean to hurt you, he wants to say. But he already has, and to such a terrible extent. He only hates himself for it.]

That. . . It won't change again.

[He can't say things like that. It isn't fair. Eyes drawing back down, she swallows thickly. Of all places, this isn't the time or place for her emotions to get the better of her. Throat tight, she can't choke down the emotion that wells within. Eyes becoming blurry, they brim with unshed tears.

This isn't the first time she's been promised an 'always'. Her heart is too fragile to accept it completely, having known what it's like to give all of herself, only to fall short and lose everything. The idea of watching it all slip past her fingers again like sand is too much. She can't risk that.

But even still, despite all of the heartache and pain, she takes comfort in hearing it. She can't remember when they stopped dancing, either. But moving forward, she simply swallows and buries her head against his chest. It's the only response she can give in the moment. Words aren't the kind of thing she can risk without breaking down completely.]

[For as much as he's willed himself to expect this sort of reaction from any given situation, it'll always be difficult to witness. The hard thudding of her heart, the scent of her tears; his own heart feels as though it's also at the back of his throat.

He isn't going to try and say anything else. Not yet. Instead - although honestly tentative initially - his arms move to embrace her with a gentle, though secure hold. One hand moves to the back of her head, his own tipped forward.

(I'm sorry,) he keeps wanting to say. Nothing will be enough.

This really isn't the time and place for this, but there's no helping it.]

[Choking back a sob, her fingers lift to curl into the jacket of his costume, tears falling freely down her cheeks in waves. It's been so painfully lonely. Her small bit of happiness she thought she had finally carved out had disappeared along with Zero's memories, only to leave her aching all over again.

The pain a pureblood is supposed to experience and feel comes after centuries of loss and heartache. So why does it feel that in her short seventeen years she's lost enough for the next thousand years? Once the dam upon her emotions breaks, everything spills over in a massive wave.]

I-I'm sorry. So sorry. [Lifting a hand up she attempts to scrub at her eyes, pulling back just a touch to try and dry them uselessly.] I don't even know why I'm crying right now. I'm really just so stupid when it comes to things like this. I'm sorry.
