250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

[ Jean-Luc isn't one to stay indoors either, or on his ship, when his curiosity gets the best of him or when a crisis is so obviously afoot. And this is how he comes across Robbins. A familiar face amid the chaos is a welcome one. Also, he is concerned about her well-being. ]

Lieutenant. Are you well? [ Meaning he has an inkling of what's going on here, through his own deductive reasoning. He has a flashlight in one hand and a metal pipe in another. ] Injured?

I'm alright, Sir, [she affirms, still in one piece. She's holding up all right, in part because she hasn't taken too many risks. At least, not yet.] And yourself?

I remain uninjured. [ He glances down at the metal pipe in his hand. ] Although our sink might leave something to be desired. [ He's certain that Data and Geordi can repair it though. ]

It would seem we're in a bit of a predicament. Creatures... running free about the prison, and very dangerous.

If the sink is the only casualty of this incident, I will have no complaints.

[Really, it's a good choice on his part. She hadn't thought to look for something suitable.]

Have you been able to determine what these creatures are?

[ He's loathe to put the word 'dinosaur' to the creatures. But really, that's what the raptors remind him of. And those are the only creatures he's come up against thus far. ]

They look like overgrown reptiles to me, Number One. [ The title just slips, because his own First Officer isn't here, but she is. ] Sharp claws and teeth... predatory. Quite dangerous.

[ A few yards away, a group of them move together. His grip on the pipe tightens. ] And apparently, they are not adverse to grouping together.

[The glance that elicits is sharp but not displeased; it's a rare spot of familiarity, really. At the moment it barely registers, distracted as she is by the cluster of beasts in the distance.]

A sound tactic, [she says, with some dismay. Peaceable as Robbins tends to be she really wishes she had a weapon.] Do you know of any secure locations nearby?

[ He is not keen on confronting a herd of the creatures. So he nods and points toward he library. His safe haven whether one is required or not. ]

Perhaps we could make our way to the library.

[She nods.]

Slowly. I suspect they are likelier to chase if we run.

[ An understanding nod and they start to move, careful not to make any sudden movements, to make a slow trek toward the looming building used for a library. Unfortunately, it's quite a ways for so many dangerous creatures about.

Jean-Luc pauses to hide behind a building with his back to the wall as a few of the raptors pass by them along the street.

[She moves as quietly as she can, as quickly as she dares; Robbins lets Picard take the lead without question, accustomed as she is to Pike doing the same. Besides, he's armed. Besides, the nearest group of raptors of which she is aware is behind them.

More or less.

She flattens herself to the wall when he does, trying to shuffle further from the corner as one of the beasts lingers a little longer than she likes.]

[ Jean-Luc calms himself as best he can, slowing his breathing, trying to stifle even the minimal noise of an inhale and exhale. For several beats it seems that they're in the clear as the lingering beast passes them by to follow the rest of the herd.

When he turns his head to whisper to Robbins as much, he sees another one in the opposite opening to the alleyway. It stares at them, head hunkered down as if it's just spotted its dinner and is deciding the best course of action in besting its prey.

He nods in that direction to get Robbins to look and see the creature that's staring them down, thus far unmoving.

[Following his eyeline, she barely manages to stifle a gasp-- it's incredible how quietly these beasts move, as large as they are.

Morgan holds her breath, her gaze sweeping downward to look for something, anything to use as a weapon of her own. She doesn't think her flashlight will accomplish much.]

[ The raptor begins to stalk toward them, obviously thinking itself the predator and them its prey. It's a slow movement, that Jean-Luc knows will only speed up were they to try to run.

He weighs his options. Could they outrun it? Probably not.

Instead, he squares his jaw and grips the pipe more tightly in his fist. He steps away from the brick wall and stares down the raptor.
] Lieutenant, I suggest you get to the library as quickly as possible. I will offer... a distraction.

Captain, [she whispers, stepping back but not far, not taking her eyes off the dinosaur,] it would be irresponsible for me to leave you.

[ He'd suspected that she might say that. His own Commander Riker didn't like for him to go on away missions at all, much less alone. ]

Nevertheless, I've already seriously wounded two of these with this. [ He raises the pipe just a bit. ] I can handle this one and get us the few paces we have left to the library.

We should both move, slowly. If it pursues us, logically I am the better choice to provide a distraction, as you are armed. When I have its attention, you can attack.

You sound very much like my own First Officer.

Yes. Quite.

[ He nods. ] Shall we go then?

[She doesn't mind the look; honestly, she wouldn't have minded being overruled, even, as long as he seriously took her objections into consideration.

She nods in response and slowly steps away from the wall, her eyes still locked on the raptor. The truth is, she's terrified; her heart is racing, but she does a good job of hiding it outwardly.

It's not far. They can do this. (She hopes.)]

[ Jean-Luc takes every suggestion from his officers seriously. And in this place, he considers her one of his own crew.

They move in combat ready position, Robbins taking up the front and his watching behind at the raptor scoping them out from that direction.

[Provided they make it through the next few minutes, she is definitely going to have to find a blunt object of her very own.]
