250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

[If you were going for a textbook creepy setting, you couldn't do much better than this. The flickering lights, the unidentifiable sounds. It's almost admirable. Early in the day-- before the raptors, before the inexplicable terrors-- there's a part of him that's darkly amused by all this. It's like someone has seen one too many horror movies. Rudy has lived one too many horror movies, so he thinks he's well prepared.

And he is, but only to a point.

Later in the day you might come across him, stalking alone through the shadows, vigilant and grim. He'll be a mess-- at least much of the blood won't be his own-- but he'll be managing, armed with makeshift weapons and surprisingly competent in defending himself.

Much later, you might find him wide-eyed and disheveled, jumping at sounds and hurrying as he looks for... something. Someone. You can ask, but he's not likely to explain anything.]

[ooc; gimme a sense of what time of day-ish / state of mind you'd like to encounter him in, if it makes a difference to you! <3]

later in the day, when he's covered in blood

[The smell of blood fills the air as Rose takes apart one of the raptors, the remains falling to the ground. It's her third kill so far and admittedly, the adrenaline she feels gives Rose a good rush. Her face shifts back to normal, fangs disappearing. She doesn't want to give anyone a reason to be more afraid than they already were.

Another scent catches her attention, leading Rose down another path until she thinks she can see someone in the gloom. Having enhanced senses had an advantage.
]

Hello? Anyone there?

[He's pressed against a building, a shadow among shadows, his heart pounding inexplicably. This spot is safe-- as safe as any place, now-- but further down the path was something. Something that sent him running without knowing why, hands wrapped white-knuckled around the handle of a big kitchen knife. It's not the dark, or the raptors; he understands the dangers, and he's capable of dealing with them. But today-- this he doesn't comprehend.

His first instinct when he hears her voice is to say nothing, to do nothing; to slink off before he's noticed.

But that would be suspicious.]

Who's there?

[She can hear his heart, how fast it was beating right now. What Rose couldn't hear was raptors and that can only be a good thing, considering how she had blood on her hands and splatters of it on her face. In a few hours she would have to go on a different kind of hunt and track down some blood to keep up her strength.]

Rose. It's Rose. [A beat, and then:] Rudy?

[He's taking measured breaths, trying to calm his body down, now that he's no longer running from nothing at all.

For a moment neither name means anything to him.

Then, he takes a few steps toward her voice, still close to the wall.]

Are you all right?

[It sounds a little flat; he doesn't have the energy to expend on sounding like he really cares. He's got no small amount of blood on him, but at least he looks (relatively) uninjured.]

I'm fine, yeah. Just a little shaken, you know?

[She looks around for any sign of him in the dark, following his voice more than anything.]

What about you? Holding up okay?

[The smell of blood is stronger than before and Rose recognises it as raptor blood; she thinks she can detect human blood as well but it was difficult when the other smell is overpowering.]

It's... [Somehow unsatisfying.] something.

[He shakes his head to clear it a bit. Maybe he can play it off as shock; doesn't seem unreasonable. He absently rubs the blade of his knife off on the hem of his shirt, not that it's going to make him any more presentable.]

I'm all right. Couple of scrapes, you know. So far I've managed to fight 'em off and run.

[Her gaze falls briefly to the knife he holds in his hand, then to his shirt. Enough blood to suggest that he's killed a few raptors.]

That's probably the best thing to do. They're tough and fast. [She's been able to handle one on its own but a whole group may prove to be a challenge.]

If you need company, I can tag along until you get to where you're going.

[He's given better than he's gotten, at least thus far. Not all of the ones he's fought are dead, but no doubt he's racked up a murder charge or three. They're faster than he is, there's no doubt of that. Much longer and the odds will beat him.

Still.]

The thing is, I'm kind of looking for someone.

Fun, [he echoes, rather flatly. Not with the sort of disbelief you might expect, but hey, the man's covered in blood; shock is a thing, right?] I kind of liked Jurassic Park better when it stayed on the big screen.

But I guess anyone who hasn't gotten eaten yet shouldn't complain, right?

[Seriously, though, the face thing is bugging him a bit. He'd ask about it but then he'd have to admit to seeing it and if he's not really seeing it, that would be awkward. He's never really suffered from hallucinations-- unless this whole Asylum counts-- but there's a first for everything.]

[One thing Brian has always had a knack for is spotting predators... but Spike doesn't really make it difficult. He's well aware that this is a dangerous situation; he isn't frightened, simply conscious of the danger, alert to his surroundings. It's a relief, since he's spent so much of the day trying to avoid aimless terror.]

I think I'll pass,

[he says flatly. He's got enough to deal with right now, he'd prefer not to fight, given a choice.

But he's not backing down, either.]

Today's so much fun already. [He shifts his weight very slightly; readiness, not nerves.] I'm not in the mood for any more excitement.

[Test him if you like, Spike. He's not going to make it easy.]

[ Looking for someone, Rudy? It's much later in the day now, after they've been separated, after Dexter has continued to slash his way out of one attack after another, but more importantly, after he's been severely and thoroughly shaken by an encounter with... something. He doesn't understand it - the boy in the blood, the strange onslaught of raw vulnerable feeling that gnaws at his mind no matter how hard he works to shut it out with that carefully practiced control.

His discipline has been ripped down, and since then he's found himself less capable - he's been lashing out at the raptors just the same, but with less finesse and strategy, his actions more raw and impulsive. It doesn't make sense. And between the attacks, he's been more susceptible to the strange patches where paranoia creeps into him. It tugs at his rationality - there is nothing to be frightened of, but he's frightened. Truly, emotionally frightened in a way that he can't recall ever being.

The fact that he is feeling this fear just makes it worse, so unnerved is he by the sensation of genuine vulnerability ripping through his otherwise orderly mind. He's managed to pull himself out of the last fear effect he's encountered and, still breathing hard, working to get it under control, he backs up under a flickering light. He leans against the pole, spattered in too much blood (far too much blood, but there's no way to get it off, right now, and why does it bother him so much, and why won't that boy go away, why can't he just shut it out and stop these feelings) and clutching a knife in his hand, as he puts his effort into reestablishing discipline. ]

[Looking, by and large, is all he's been doing today-- since they were separated, in fact, though it hasn't exactly been without distractions. Distractions which he might have enjoyed more had Dexter been with him, though that would have raised a slew of questions he isn't ready to address yet. The truth is, this morning, it was fun. For a little while, at least, it was fun. Fending off bloodthirsty dinosaurs with kitchen knives and such isn't exactly the brotherly bonding experience he wanted, but it was better than nothing. A step in the right direction. A seed to plant, which might grow into the right set of questions.

It stopped being fun when they were separated; when something took hold, that intense fear of nothing at all which set them running different ways. It was perhaps less jarring for Brian, but no less confusing; and though it's come and go all day he's still a little shaken now, still more cautious than he would be if it were only the tangible enemies out there. He's kept at it because his purpose-- finding Dexter-- is second to nothing, especially in such dangerous circumstances. Their mother, he thinks, would hardly appreciate him letting his little brother be eaten by dinosaurs. (This thought occurred to him earlier; between its ridiculousness and an ill-timed pass through the edges of that something, he'd found himself laughing hysterically just long enough to be chased by a thankfully small raptor. But that's another story.)

Catching sight of Dexter makes his heart race again, though under the circumstances-- the darkness, the dangers (known and unknowable), the amount of blood-- he's anything but relieved. He comes closer-- swift but nearly silent, a habit that's served him well today. And when he's just within earshot he calls out-- well, hisses really, because raptors--]

Dexter!

[ Nearly silent, of course, is not quite silent. Not completely. Whatever small noise was made in his approach is enough to inspire Dexter to tighten his grasp over the handle of the knife, to turn towards it not with his head but with his eyes alone... but the hissing of his name is enough to dissipate a large portion of that increased tension.

He doesn't exactly know Rudy well, but he is someone at least familiar in this, and allies are preferable. They'd clearly been more than formidable alongside one another - a matter which he'll have to come back to examine when he's no longer in imminent danger nor quite as rattled as he is now. Even aside from the strategic advantages, his company is not entirely unwelcome. That is strange, and for now Dexter will have to let it go as an effect of his emotional turmoil. ]

Rudy.

[ His own tone is likewise hushed in response, with almost a shade of relief to it - he's as confused by that as anyone, though it probably is for the best his sister's boyfriend isn't dead, right?

He moves forward, shifting his weight off of the pole, and gives the area as much of an examination as he can - then out of what little light it provides and towards the voice, again into the cover of the darkness. He should ask after his wellbeing - the thought nags at Dexter, an echo of Harry's code that isn't nearly as intrusive as it normally would be, not nearly strong enough to motivate him to act on it. Instead, once he makes out the shape of Rudy in the darkness, he again glances around. It's not the type of alertness he generally practices, it's more... nervous. 'On edge' would be a massive understatement. ]

[Darkness and Dexter and the heavy iron scent of blood. If the fear hits them now, Brian is going to be a goner. Too familiar, even in the face of everything else, everything impossible and insane.

He doesn't look at the other man as he approaches; both of them have good instincts, both of them are alert and on edge. He's still holding onto his own knife-- the point is down but the grip is firm, and he's ever-ready, just in case the dark streets hold any surprises.]

Where were you?

[he asks, after a moment, very quietly. There's a certain shade of what the fuck happened to you? in his tone. That's too much blood, isn't it? He's been no slouch but he has to doubt that Dexter did all of that himself.]

[ Though quiet, there is a sharp edge to Dexter's voice - an almost emotional tinge to it, less perfectly steady than it should be. Frustrated. Maybe even unnerved. ]

I don't know.

[ He doesn't and it's a startlingly uncomfortable and unfamiliar fact he has to own. After the encounter... well, he'd lost his bearings. Speaking of that... ]

I know. I haven't seen it, but...

[But he's felt it, which means he understands at least a bit of what Dexter's dealing with. For all that they barely know one another, in some ways-- the important ways-- he knows the younger man better than anyone else, and he knows that sort of terror must have come as a shock. Neither of them are very well-adjusted, emotionally.]

We should.

[ His grasp is still tight on his knife, arm tensed - a little too ready, just a bit too hyper-alert. He'd be more effective if he wasn't as on edge, and he knows it, but that knowledge makes no difference. ]

I ran into it when I was on my own... we should be better off staying together.

[ Which is as much as he's really willing to say on the matter. It did go for him when he was isolated - he guesses it's most effective that way, based on what it did to him. That was... personal. ]

[Under other circumstances he'd be pleased that Dexter is agreeing with at least the safety-in-numbers pretense of them sticking together. As it is...well, for various reasons he isn't disagreeing, that's all. He takes one slow step away from their little puddle of light, his eyes darting about-- into the distance, at Dexter's tense grip, at the excessive bloodstains.]

What happened?

[Did Dexter manage to kill it? Whatever it is? He doesn't even have the presence of mind to be jealous of the possibility.]
