[ It's a sweltering hot day under the sea! Luckily the wardens have provided the necessary means to keep cool: whether you're sunbathing at the beach, sniping your fellow inmates with a fully loaded super soaker or just cooling off under a tree with a cold treat, this is the place to do it! ]

[She smiles] Good I'm glad to hear it. Sometimes it is nice to be able to get someone back after they do something to you. Even if it is trivial.

[Why yes, she is considering this for someone as well. The sketch is starting to look more and more like a person. Tieria might begin to recognize that it looks like him]

Yes. [He still had the one Lyle had dropped.]

But I am glad you have managed to avoid it so far.

I am glad too. It's not necessarily pleasant to get a surprise like that. A friend or someone you didn't know?

One of each. [Lyle could sort of be considered a friend. And Jake was still enough of a stranger to Tieria that he didn't consider him very close.]

The friend was teasing you?

[She's curious about that now. Since she's had the same problem as of recently]

That is likely. He was lying in wait, likely for anyone who happened by and looked like a good target.

At least he is an equal opportunist. [Still rude, but not necessarily targeting him specifically]

Small consolation, but yes.

[Tieria nodded slightly.]

I still have the pistol he gave me.

[He had it tucked in the bag he had put down on the blanket at his feet.]

[She chuckles]

That's good then. At least he didn't send you away unarmed after he got you wet.

Any good with it?

It was thoughtful of him. [He supposed, anyway.

Her next question kind of baffled him a little, but then he had to remember that not everyone he associated her was used to that kind of fighting... or, in some cases, fighting at all. Having spent most of his life around a military-like team left him a little biased on the idea of handing weapons.]

I am.

[Not to toot his own horn, but Tieria could handle a gun. Not that he ever actually uses it in canon... just points and fails to fire.]

[Fighting us, but more physical fighting for Michiru. She wasn't much into weapons aside from her mirror and her violin... which weren't the same thing]

Think you are going to use it at some point?

[If he looks at her sketch now, he will definitely see she had been sketching him]

I am not sure.

[He wasn't overly concerned, really. It was just water, after all, as annoying as it was. If anything, he was just planning on it being a self-defense sort of thing.]

Good luck if you do.

What do you think? [She asks, showing him the sketch]

[He nodded a silent thanks, then looked over when she tilted the sketchbook for him to see.

Oh...

That might have just made him blush the tiniest bit.]

That is well done.

[Why did she draw him??????]

Thank you. Portraits are the most interesting things to sketch. You can get so much emotion in them.

[Well, there was his answer]

Do you think so?

[Odd because people had usually considered him so emotionless. Though, he most certainly wasn't. He just kept them under wraps better than most.]

[She nods, turning the sketch book back to herself and working on it more]

You look like you are contemplating something I think. Of course someone else could see it and think something else.

[He often did have a lot on his mind. Before, it had always been related to the Plan, if things were changing, if the Plan needed to be adjusted to account for new events, if their predictions had been correct, how fast things were moving forward... Now, it was about Marina. About getting home, about how things might be going at home, about things he did here with the Defense Force and classes, about keeping an eye on Lyle (and the other when they'd been here). Basically, he was always thinking.]

I guess I am.

See? Just a drawing can say a lot about people. You can change or lighten the mood with just the right shading. You can't really lighten the mood with a potted plant or make a bowl of fruit seem like it is deep in thought.

A bowl of fruit is unable to think.

[The comparison was lost on the non-abstract workings of Tieria's mind. Sorry, Michiru.]

That's the point. If you are going for introspective, make the viewer wonder about the subject's motivation, a bowl of fruit is not the best subject.

[He nodded.]

Yes. I can agree with that.

[He glanced at Naiad.]

What about animals? I suppose, on some level, they think and feel, but I cannot imagine it would be exactly the same as we do.

[She lets her gaze follow his over to the Eevee, lounging under the tent]

No, I don't think it is quite the same as with us, but that is okay. They are usually a good subject as well. And you can put more emotion in with them, more with ambiance if not actual expression.

That makes sense. More like in context, then.

[She flips back a few pages to a sketch she made of Naiad slipping on the window sill of her apartment. She was curled and completely oblivious. If it weren't for the ears, it may have well been a cat]

Such as this.
