[ It's a sweltering hot day under the sea! Luckily the wardens have provided the necessary means to keep cool: whether you're sunbathing at the beach, sniping your fellow inmates with a fully loaded super soaker or just cooling off under a tree with a cold treat, this is the place to do it! ]

(( ooc: Mingle away! You are of course encouraged to make your own posts and mingles for this event, should you want to! Event information can be found over HERE! ))

[ Hei glanced at her, snagging one last droplet of ice cream from the side of the cone before he swallowed, nodding. ]

It grew warm, on occasion, but it's difficult to adjust between one extreme and another, wouldn't you agree?

[ and he could hardly claim that back then, he cared less for the heat and more for their safety. The jungles of Brazil had not been kind. ]

I would, certainly for ordinary people-- but adjusting became necessary in my travels before arriving here. [A lopsided smile. She quickly understood how important a fonist's ability to even only faintly manipulate their body temperature was, and envied the Colonel all the more]

It wasn't odd to leave the frozen north to next go right to the Zao desert or some tropical area with little time or preparation.

[ his jaw dropped and then he simply swallowed and closed it. ]

That is certainly some extensive traveling. I hope you took good care of yourself.

[ he nodded to a nearby bench ]

Shall we sit? I'd like to hear more, if you don't mind. [ and he's anxious for the distraction. And he's genuinely curious. There's so much of each other they never stopped to share. There had been too many lies between them. ]

[She's more than a little surprised and, cocking her head, doesn't try to hide it for once. She's not one to deny answers to such questions(except that particular one because she certainly didn't take good care of herself but he doesn't need to hear that) but she never expected him to ask and she's not sure what she should tell, exactly]

...Really?

[Nonetheless, she steps over and takes a seat, using a second to smooth out her skirt and settling her water bottle in her lap] Well... we were extremely pressed for time, to put it simply, so we didn't have the luxury of worrying about climate when going to an area. We just had to get there-- first.

[ he settled in next to her, leaning back for once to watch her rather then staring at his surroundings as he was usually wont to do. He simply nodded, encouraging her to speak on in response to her question. ]

First?

[ he understood the need for speed and stealth, especially when it was a race for artifacts from the Gate. Everyone had been interested in Contractor research. ]

Your reason there must have been important, if you were in a race against time. Were you successful?

Not always.

[Her gaze drifts down, distant, but it's clear that it's not simply to avoid meeting his directly; it's memories, and the palpable sense of failure they still carry with them]

A lot of people lost their lives because we didn't make it, or-- I was naive. [If she hadn't fallen for the ruse at Akzeriuth, she might have stayed and been able to do something...]

[ ah... he shouldn't have pressed for details, but he was no less disappointed that she shared him. He stayed quiet, however, as he shook his head. ]

You learn and from learning, honor the dead. You did what you could with what you knew. [ of that, he was certain. ]

Yes, I know I have to believe that. [It's either try to or accept helplessness, and that won't do. She looks over, flashing a weak smile]

We got better, after those. We were dealt the hand of playing catch up from the beginning, but we eventually got ahead at a few points. Van always found out of course, with his connections... but we were ready for that, too. [Not like before]

[ he knew the struggle of fighting ahead only to fall behind. He's seen too many stars fall in his wake. ]

He must have been a formidable opponent, this Van. What were you fighting against?

[ the for, he had no doubt. Tear's sense of honor had always been of the highest rank. ]

[She doesn't answer right away. She could simply give the easy reply of the physical opposition-- her brother, the Major, and the other God-Generals-- and leave it at that, despite knowing it's not really what he meant.

But he deserves better than that. Even it means more questions and explanations on the things of home]

A replica world that destroys destiny... and all faith in human beings, too.

[ she says it so matter-of-factually once she speaks at all, that Hei responded with equal gravity. ]

Is that no different then what's been done here?

[ he could (almost) believe in reincarnation; he'd seen with his own eyes a star flicker into renewed life. He could understand more then most, what choice meant in forging one's destiny. Without it, they were nothing. ]

No-- and yes. [Slowly; "justice" varies from person to person, so naturally the extremeness of the prison would somewhat as well. But there is none of that with what Van was doing. Even the aware God-Generals couldn't claim it was right, only necessary]

You've never seen or heard of small children or infants ever being imprisoned here or in the other domes, have you? [She twists in her seat to face him directly, somber] Even for supposed future crimes. To me, that implies that the Wardens, the Engineers-- this system, is capable of some degree of leeway. There are some standards.

Van's intention wouldn't allow even that. He was... indiscriminate. Both people that lived, followed blindly and the strong that sought to choose their own future would perish with the planet, no exception. There was no chance for anyone to grow and change, to realize "this way of living is wrong", and encourage others to understand that.

[ he listened attentively, drawing out the words, repeating them silently to catch nuance and flavor and the careful way she spoke. She was calm as she spoke, and the weight of gravity added to the sternness.

He could understand, somewhat, her concern. The humans, after all, had attempted to kill every last contractor on Earth for existing, for daring to have an uncertain power that they couldn't have. There had been no choice in the matter, not until Amber. ]

I... see. [ he paused, turning over her words a third time before he simply shook his head, half helpless. ] The weight of a world should never rest in one man's hands. You must have been shocked, once you discovered what he had planned.

[ Hei had, and there had been so little time to choose.

... even if it wasn't really a choice. It's the world his sister had chosen. ]

[She doesn't have to reach for that memory, it's as fresh as the day before and she closes her eyes against it-- for a moment, to gather her thoughts and the words to express them]

At the time, it... It was like what I was hearing was in a completely foreign language, or that my mind had just stopped making sense of words at all. I remember how cornered I felt, faced with the man in front of me and what he had just said, how I couldn't do anything at first. It felt like I stood there forever. [An eternity of nausea, foreboding, and her heart ratcheting so hard she had feared it might burst from her then tiny chest, that really was only a matter of seconds. She looks up suddenly, out at the street before them but not taking it in at all, her eyes hardened by the resolve she found that fateful day as she recalls it]

But a part of me managed to understand despite all that... that what he intended would destroy so many people, and that it couldn't be allowed. That I had to kill him right there.

[ he knew those words, that tone. While he could not fathom killing a sibling, he could well understand that fierce desire to protect that which was worth protecting. Xing had been everything to him; he had followed her to the ends of the Earth and would again. ]

And did you succeed?

[ And so he spoke softly, trying not to pry and yet prying all the same. If Tear wished to speak, she could. He knew from experience it could be cathartic. Havoc had taught him that, so long ago. ]

[A quiet scoff, a clear "no" that derides her youthful foolishness at the same time. Expressing is coming easier, right away, with the momentum she now has, but it's not so much yet that she wonders about it. That it means she could trust him once more]

Not then. Then... He wasn't expecting me to turn on him, he had told me everything because he wanted me to be a part of it, on his side. So when I got close and reacted right away, it was a simple thing to run him through, and again.

But that's all-- I was young and reckless [more so than now, even] and he was so very powerful, more than the girl back then could of hoped to be. He sent me flying before I could even try again.

[Her voice tapers off gradually, her hands clenching up into fists in her lap as she remembers that helplessness she had felt, that maybe she couldn't kill him after all, and the momentary, instinctual terror when he stood up and faced her after that initial attack. He'd been so furious, he didn't resemble the person she called her brother anymore. She'd seen him angry before, it became more frequent in him as his visits became more sparse, but nothing like that... Like he might have to kill everything around him just to calm down]

But he did not kill you. Perhaps he wished you could stop him, at the end.

[ the words came out quiet and he noticed her clenched hands and ached to hold them, but he kept his own in his lap, resting lightly against his jeans despite the sheen of sweat that grew as he resisted his natural instincts. She had been loved even if the man in question saw the world differently. There was cold comfort in that observation. ]

He didn't want to be stopped. He was the kind of man that if he did want to be stopped... then he would stop himself before anyone else could. [So willful, so prideful. So hell-bent on deciding his own fate, that he wouldn't-- couldn't let anyone else direct him] No, even till the end, I think he hoped I would reconsider. He wanted the ones most important to him at his side to see the future he would create, to have every last moment with them, not to have to kill us as enemies.

[She knows he cared for her, in his own way, she has no doubts no matter what words were exchanged between them. But it's not as comforting as one might think. She's wondered many times if it wouldn't be easier if there was no love there to twist, to lose]

[ Hei looked sadly out into the garden, hands curling around his knees. ]

But how could he ask that, if he meant for all mankind to be a hollow replica? It would be selfish to want only you by his side.

[ selfish and cowardly. Hei would not begin to understand the things Tear had been through, the way her brother thought, but he knew that much at least. No one could be a replacement, not even one's self. But he could try and try he did, for Tear's sake. ]

He fully believed he was doing what was necessary to save humanity: erasing both impending fate and the mistakes of the past, and making a completely fresh start for history. Perhaps he thought he was allowed to have that one selfish thing with all the blood he soaked his hands in for his perceived greater good.

[She gives a shake of her head at nothing in particular, mouth drawn into a perfect line, before glancing back to Hei and studying him for a silent moment] I'll never know the thoughts, feelings or desires that he kept hidden. I can only guess. It's all I end up doing when I think about him, wondering "why". [A small, humorless smile]

I wonder when that will stop.

[ his own twisted in a grimace, giving lie to her smile as he immediately caught on to her meaning. It was not so difficult; Tear was speaking plainly. ]

It won't. Not even if you forget. [ because the one universal truth he had discovered was that all lost memories left an echo, an emptiness that the bearer could feel and touch and then loose like water dripping from one's hand. It marked them and in marking, made them wonder. ]

But with time, you might learn to care less. [ time was the great healer, or so he had been told. He could believe it now, five years after Pai had disappeared. ]

[That might make things easier. But to her, now, caring less is the start of the Major's... Van's path. At what point can you stop the not caring before it's all already gone? There's a thin railing separating strong and jaded, and though sometimes it felt like she'd leaned over it a little to the latter, she hadn't quite got there. She doesn't want to be, to fall completely]

I won't forget. And even though he did, I won't stop caring-- that's one "lesson" I'll fully use my stubbornness against. [Her smile hardens despite her light words, and her eyes set in that very determination]

So I'll be stuck with it forever, or either find peace my own way.

[ his own return smile is thin and veiled, understanding implicit. ]

Then I will hope peace finds you.

[ He's certain Tear won't look for it herself, and there's, quite frankly, little else he can say on the subject. She's already told him far more then he ever expected. Standing, easing himself to his feet, he gave Tear another nod, one of many throughout this conversation. ]

Don't work too hard today. You need your rest as well.

[ and her health ]
