Event mingle: POWER OUTAGE
((OOC: This post begins the power outage portion of the mod-approved Ghostly Event!. This is a mingle post so feel free to post and tag around freely. Action and network posts are both welcome here! However, you are of course more than welcome to make your own posts related to the sudden onset of pitch blackness. Enjoy!))

[The hour isn't too late just yet, the costume party's still in full swing and less mask-oriented inmates might still be out and about, doing whatever. Lovely night, isn't it? Too bad it's about to take a serious left turn.]

[Regardless of where you are in the dome, all of a sudden there's a minor power surge as the lights strain with over-brightness for just long enough to draw looks of concern, and then the entire dome is plunged into complete darkness. Anyone paying a whole lot of widespread attention might note that the first lights blink out in Sector 2, then the effect cascades through the remaining sectors.]

[Not long after the dome goes dark, there's a loud clap of thunder and then a torrent of unrelenting rain starts falling. The only light you'll get tonight is half-second streaks of lightning arcing down from the dome.]

[No lights, no power, a nasty storm, no kiosk to complain at. Have fun.]

That remains to be seen. [ he quickly sprawls down the name and then tucks it back into his pocket and then he frowns, holding still as he suddenly comes to one startling realization. ]

The communicators are down.

[ gdi, his whole evening is ruined! ]

Ah well, I'm not sure tonight is the best time anyway. I think I saw her at the party.

[ Bak blinks ] There was a party? [ cleeeeeeeeeeeeearly out of the loop Komui must not want him drunk again ]

Why didn't you tell me! [ he could've gone. And had fun. And maybe meet up with that Richie again. gah! ]

It was announced, you know. [And Richie is his bro, so hey.] I went, it was nice! I got some literature lessons from the future.

[ ._. stop horning in on all his friends! ]</small> Uh... what? [ his brain is all in a tumble. He could sit. Or stand. or...

he just sinks, leaning back on his desk and feeling a pounding headache coming on. ]
Weren't you in the middle of important work? I thought we had discussed this!

[ oh, Komui, Komui. Can't you ever be serious? ]

I'm sorry, weren't you just saying you'd have wanted to go? [Komui plunks the lantern on Bak's desk and takes the other one across the room. Congrats, you're experiencing the rare Komui-irritation.]

Don't you dare lecture me. I've been here for months dealing with Noah and the Earl and the Fourteenth and all sorts of crazy stuff, and Lenalee disappearing five times.

[ he flinched and then his jaw dropped. Komui was... Komui was sulking?

No, no. That was usually just an act but, well, it didn't sound like an act and Bak knew Komui well. Usually. Sometimes. Almost never.

He shifts, looking uncomfortable and swallowing and finally just getting a little angry himself. ]
It's hardly my fault I didn't know you were here. Those clones the warden sends are impeccable!

[ he gulps and then looks away ] And I'm sorry. This whole situation is messed up. I've been keyed up for weeks. [ and not getting much sleep on the side. Ugh. Apologizing. Just how low could Bak stoop? ]

[Komui sighs, his brief flash of anger fading as quickly as it rose. He leans on his desk, his back facing Bak still because he's not sure his typical control when it comes to his expression is quite functioning.] I know.

...She's never been gone this long. [He dare not tell Bak about the black building from the previous dome, nor his suspicions about where former inmates are kept; that's his to bear, alone. But Bak knows what it's like to miss someone dear to him, someone no one else could replace, and that's something they probably both need to get out.]

[ Bak gulps and stares down at his hands. They were full of callouses and dirty with sweat and grease. They weren't the best hands to be working with the delicate machinery that he often did, but they got the job done and that's what counted in the Order.

He would hate it if it wasn't also the only home he'd ever known. ]

She's been gone on missions longer then this. She'll come back.

[ and he did know. Fou... he's barely gone without her before and even when he'd been forced to part, he still knew she was but one incantation away. No longer, however. He's tried. ]

I know. [But he says it too quickly, too firmly. He doesn't know any such thing, and if he did would it be right to want her someplace like this?]

[Wrong or not, though, he needs to watch over her. It's not right, like this.]

[Komui takes a breath, doing everything he can to keep his voice steady.]
I should find some more batteries. [He starts toward the other end of the lab; it won't do for Bak to see him almost crying, because then he won't be able to keep his own eyes dry.]

[ Bak stared, taking a step towards Komui as he walked away and then stopped, face hard in the shadowed light. He knew that look, that tone. It's the very one Komui wore when the next wave of deceased drifted into the Order. The dead were dead, but it was up to Komui to remember their names, their faces. To honor their sacrifice by drawing from their experiences to make newer, better, more efficient arsenal for the war against the Noah.

It was a face that demanded perseverance, not condolences. And so Bak stirred, rummaging in his drawer for his keys. ]
We should get some candles too. It won't take long. [ at least, so long as no one else had the idea to make a run on the store, but that's immaterial. The point was give Komui his moment. ]

[He wouldn't have declined a condolence or two just now, but Komui has a solemn respect for how Bak takes action, moving smoothly in to handle what Komui can't.]

[So he just nods, and continues his fake search until Bak is out the door. And then he sags forward, exhaustion and grief tugging at him -- but he doesn't, can't break down fully. And he won't, not ever.]
