[ December Events! ]
29 November 2011 at 02:40 pm
December is going to be a month full of events for us here in Marinaland! So this post is going to break it out, and what each event means for all of you, so that you don't plan anything on top of an event that will make that impossible.

Day 144: Cleaning day: Shelter! It's time for Acumen's annual cleaning binge! That's right, you didn't know there was an annual cleaning binge because nobody's been here for a year yet. Acumen is kicking everybody out of the shelter starting at 10am for 24 hours so that it can clean everything in it. This means that people who live in the shelter will need to find somewhere else to spend the night. The bots will be very serious about herding you out of the shelter, so if you try to escape from them, you will suddenly find yourself unconscious. An hour later, you will be outside the shelter, with no way back in, since the doors will not open.

This IC dayweek there will also be newbies (so they'll be stranded, too!) and a mingle at the Devil's Compass.

Day 145: Cleaning day: Dome! Surprise! There's two parts to cleaning day. Now that Acumen has thoroughly cleaned the shelter, it's time to bring out a big army of robots to clean up -- everything else. Once again, that means everyone is going to be shooed out of their homes, and this time into the shelter. Acumen will fill the place with food and new books, board games, and video games to keep you all entertained while they are cleaning.

You don't have to head into the shelter until late afternoon, but Acumen will slowly be shutting down public buildings as it makes its way in a sweep across the dome and the robots will encourage everyone they meet to head into the dome shortly. By late afternoon, they will be getting pretty emphatic, and by the time it starts to go dark, they will start neutralizing and escorting people. Again, if you try to escape from them, you will suddenly find yourself unconscious. An hour later, you will be inside the shelter, with no way back out, since the doors will not open.

Late on day 145 it starts snowing...

Day 146 - 147: Snowed in! Komui and Richie got a little overenthusiastic about a private competition to create a winter wonderland, and their inventions went a little haywire and made much more snow than the dome was prepared for. So now there is a ton of snow barricading people into the shelter -- as well as coating the entire dome! Acumen shuts down the machines but is not willing to take any extreme steps to remove the snow quickly, so you're all stuck huddling and sleeping in the shelter for a while as Acumen manually clears out the snow.

The doors will still be totally sealed and will not open, but characters who are able to teleport in and out will still be able to. But outside is going to be pretty unwelcoming with ten feet of snow everywhere and bots that will shut you down if you try to do anything disruptive. The power will be down everywhere not the shelter to save Acumen's resources in the event of property damage caused by the weight of the snow.

There will be no robots in the shelter during this event. Luckily, thanks to the banquet provided, there will be enough food to last the duration.

This will be our holiday event, and it will last through December! Questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome below.

[ Halloween Candy ]
30 October 2011 at 11:52 pm
So Halloween is tomorrow, and ICly it will last from October 31st to November 6th. Acumen is putting up some decorations, but resident mad scientist Agatha has volunteered to put together the candy to make the day really special. Acumen thoroughly inspected all the candy and pronounced them free of toxins or dangerous substances! But Agatha isn't only a scientist: she's a magic scientist. And even with her mental acuity reduced, she still has a knack for making trouble.

So there are bowls all over the dome, even outside on random street corners, filled with candy. And some of the candy is enchanted. The kind of candy you eat dictates what effect you might experience if you get one of the enchanted candies:

Now, we would like to encourage everyone to use an RNG unless an effect is an absolute must-have for a particular character.

This event is optional, even if your character would eat the candy: not every candy is going to have an effect on it, only a certain percentage of them. Similarly, some characters might gobble down entire bowls of mixed candy: they will not experience every effect. Please make any given character experience no more than 2, or at the absolute maximum 3 effects.

Effects will wear off in the morning, but not before.

Now you may proceed with your plotting in the comments!!!

[ 4th Wall Registration ]
13 August 2011 at 11:31 am
The 4th wall event begins on Monday! Most of the info is here, but here's reminders/additional questions that came up:

  • 4th wall journals will be allowed to join the community and are encouraged to make their own posts and/or to comment to other people's. They should not put tags on their posts unless they are characters who have previous Marina memories and their tag is not currently in use, in which case go ahead. (Examples: Muraki, Juri Kuran, etc.) At the end of the week the journals will be removed.

  • 4th wall characters will have communicators and a normal welcome message, but not weapons, and as a reminder, they will be greatly power-reduced.

  • 4th wall journals are strongly advised to have a contact post on their journals, and the following information on their profiles.

  • 4th wall characters who are apped at the end of August will be allowed to retain their memories of the 4th wall; otherwise, this is not the case

  • 4th wall troublemakers should be reported to the mods.

In order to be accepted to the community for this event, you must do the following:

1) Log into your 4th wall journal!
2) Paste the following into a comment to this post: "community marinasylum remove [usernamehere]". Remove the brackets and place your 4th wall journal name where it says "usernamehere".
3) Make a comment, one for each journal! Do not put any other content in the comment. Comments will be screened.
4) Try to join the community and wait to be accepted on Monday! It's that easy! (Don't worry if you get an error message; it still worked.)

If you have any questions, please ask them on the other post so we can keep track of the journals better.

[Fourth Wall Event!]
30 July 2011 at 12:56 pm
On day 128 (August 15-22), random individuals who have been or are being investigated by the justice system will begin appearing in the dome! This will actively be moving the plot of the game forward, and an IC post explaining why it's happening will be made in advance of the event beginning.

The weekend before the event, we'll put up another post about it to start the actual management part.

Guidelines for the event:

1) You can play almost anything! AU characters, characters with memories from other games or the open meme or previous fourth walls, dropped Marina characters, original characters, characters we would normally reject for being underage, characters already in the game -- in addition to anyone else you could normally app! We do however ask that you not play real people.

2) There is no limit on the amount of characters you can bring in. You can do as many as you feel comfortable playing simultaneously.

3) The power level of the characters you bring in will be very low. Incoming characters may experience nausea, lack of coordination, dizziness, distorted sight or hearing, and once they recover, will find that attempting to use their abilities will bring these symptoms back.

4) Incoming characters will be equipped with a communicator, and will lose any weapons on their person. But they will still have anything else they were carrying at the time / any injuries they had / etc.

5) For our existing players, please be aware that playing random people for this event does not justify inactivity for August! Don't spend more than a week tagging with six character journals whose activity doesn't count. "I was busy fouth-walling" will not be a valid excuse for failing the AC.

6) Please be considerate of the fact that this is a canon event and everyone will remember it afterward. We'd appreciate it if you would not plan anything disruptive without consulting castmates and mods, or bring in characters exclusively to create massive amounts of trouble.

7) Characters apped at the beginning of September will be given the option to retain their 4th wall memories -- including AU characters, OCs, or characters with other game memories, provided they had several threads of 8 comments or more during the event to go off of. (Multiple posts not required.) In this instance, we will be waiving the "previous Marina experience needed" requirement for these kinds of characters. However, you will still not be allowed to bring in duplicates from the same canon, underage characters, or animals without the ability to communicate.

8) 4th wall journals will be invited to join the community and allowed to make their own posts. We advise you copy-paste and fill in at least the following on your journal profile or in a post. We also encourage you to have a contact post on your journal.

If players experience any trolling, god-moding, or otherwise lame experiences during the event, please contact the mods ASAP so we can keep track of it or respond to it. Do not feed trolls; again, this is a canon event and will have canon consequences, so if you experience someone coming in and announcing that their character kills everyone with his mind-lasers, just ignore and tag someone else until the mods can make them go away. It didn't happen!

If you have any questions, please ask them here. Otherwise, feel free to use this post for plotting / taunting / enabling!

[ Costume Ball! ]
30 January 2011 at 02:36 pm
So, here is your OOC information about the costume party:

This is going to end in personality hijiinx! In order to participate, your character should come to the party dressed as a character from another canon; if you like that sort of thing, you're encouraged to make terrible voice actor puns or creator-inspired gags.

If you come to the party dressed as a generic doctor, your costume will not work. If you come dressed as Dr. Gregory House, or the doctor from Black Jack, it will. This is your opt-out if you don't want personality hijinx!

Mistletoe-kun Take Two!
27 December 2010 at 09:34 pm
Mistletoe bots are activated! Here's how they work: They are little silver sphere-shaped robots with mistletoe dangling from them. They float through the air, people-seeking missiles, and when they find a pair of people together, they erect an invisible barrier that slowly but steadily shrinks, and will only let up when you kiss! Lips required, cheeks and foreheads don't count, but it can be a chaste peck. After you've kissed, the barrier disappears and the Mistletoe-kun will zoom off.

If things are getting uncomfortable and you're still in denial, Mistletoe-kun will say "Kiss!" to prompt you. They can find you by accident, follow you around, lurk and then leap out at you, or they can be lured in and used as an excuse if you're crafty.

Reminder: This event is totally optional! Mistletoe-kuns are fragile and not difficult to destroy (NOT the barriers, and not if you're IN the barrier already, but from the outside) and you can always spend the day hiding or have a streak of luck and manage to avoid them, if you're not comfortable.

Also: We're not randomizing this year, but we highly encourage you to pick at least one random person to tag if you plan to participate! If Lelouch only gets caught under the mistletoe with Suzaku and C.C. and Nunnally, that's pretty boring.

[ Event: Dimensional Stabilizer ]
29 November 2010 at 01:17 am
The dimensional stabilizer has been glitched! Although some characters will be affected in terms of disappearances/reappearances, no one not directly involved with the characters will notice until morning.

But in the morning, BAM, SENSORY DEPRIVATION.

You will be able to choose one, maximum two senses for your characters to lose. Each player can choose one character to lose two senses. (And, obviously, if a character has a canonically lost sense, you're not losing two senses if you take away another one for the event.)

Definitely approved senses are the following: sight, hearing, taste, smell, speech, and touch. Go crazy with those.

If you want to lose another sense -- including: sense of balance, sense of heat, sense of pain, and sense of physical relativity -- please ask in the comments. We just want to make sure we don't have a prison full of people who can't feel pain throwing themselves off balconies to fully enjoy their new abilities.

Ask questions in the comments if you got 'em!

Dimensional stabilizer event poll!
24 November 2010 at 01:24 am
The dimensional stabilizer event will be happening next week!

After some consideration, we've narrowed the candidates for the dimensional stabilizer event down to the following:

Bodyswap, genderswap, and sensory deprivation.

Ageshuffle would be exclusive for many characters (you can't go older if you die in your canon; you can't go younger if you were never a child; if you don't age, you probably can't do anything). Personalityswap is something we want to encourage players to find an excuse to do!, but it isn't something the dimensional stabilizer can do; the dimensional stabilizer is restricted to things you can perceive, not personality traits.

So here are the options. Bear in mind that all events are optional; you don't have to participate if you don't want to.

1. Bodyswap. We would want to have a signup and assign characters to swap. Powers would remain with the physical body, not the personality, so this would also be a wacky power experimentation event! Creating a new account for icons would be allowed and even encouraged.

2. Genderswap. This is the common term for what's more like a sexswap; your character's physical sex characteristics will be swapped. Male characters will become female, female characters will become male. No signup required. Your character's gender identification and memories will not change. Creating a new account for icons would be allowed and encouraged. Potentially less fun for our non-humans...

3. Sensory deprivation. The easiest option: no new journals or signups required. You would be encouraged to select preferably one, definitely no more than two of the following for your character to temporarily lose: sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch, pain, speech. Bear in mind that your communicator will not change, so you may be unable to see/hear/communicate over the network for the duration of the day.

So, with that clarified...!

[ Event: Darkness, Rain, Monsters : Special Round ]
25 October 2010 at 07:44 pm
You will be awoken by a siren. It sounds off three times, each long, and seems to fill the air. At the end of the third siren, Marina will be plunged into darkness.

Find a flashlight; you'll want to see what's happening around you, as reality peels away to reveal something much, much darker. The floor beneath your feet will be replaced by metal grating that makes your footsteps echo. The walls around you will become more of the same, or sometimes disappear altogether. And if you go poking around too much, you might find -- some very disturbing "artwork" strung up where a door or a window used to be: a skinned corpse, pinned in place by barbed wire, bloody and battered beyond all hope of recognition.

Did we mention, by the way, that all of this will be happening right in your very own home? Oh, yes. The effects extend indoors today.

Outside, it's raining again. There are still the occasional gaping chasm, where the grating has twisted broken apart. And as the day wears on, the monsters that roam Marina's streets will become more numerous -- and more aggressive. They still won't follow you inside, but that doesn't mean they won't bang on your doors and rattle your windows when you give them the slip.

NOTE: Everything in this post only applies to your character if they have "darkness" in their hearts. This is not necessarily a literal darkness, but characters who are bad people, e.g. evil or psychopathic, do automatically qualify. Any character who has ever experienced something violent that haunted them -- whether or not it is their fault, whether or not the situation was later corrected, whether or not they remember it -- also qualifies. However, a deeply good character who is also from a school drama and thus has little experience with violence or trauma might see nothing at all.

There is a little wiggle room, though, if you really want your character to see monsters, and a character with more darkness in his or her heart can (optionally) experience more drastic effects.

If you're still not sure whether this describes your character, other players have asked more specifically about their own characters in the comments on the previous post, and you can do the same here.

Again: this is not like the previous incident, there will be no blackout for characters who don't experience the other effects.

[ Event: Darkness, Rain, Monsters : Round 3 ]
01 October 2010 at 02:56 pm
Marina's streets are pitch-black tonight. A cold rain falls. Better get out the flashlights, because that's the only way you're going to be seeing anything until dawn. It's like a power outage, only the communicators still work.

If you venture outdoors, be careful where you step: random street corners seem to have been mysteriously replaced with deep, gaping chasms. But at least everything else seems normal, right?

No, wait -- there are also monsters waiting for you in the darkness.

NOTE: Everything in this post only applies to your character if they have "darkness" in their hearts. This is not necessarily a literal darkness, but characters who are bad people, e.g. evil or psychopathic, do automatically qualify. ALSO: Difficulty levels are now relative. Silent Hill is evolving, changing to suit its new environment -- and this is one of the changes. So you may now rest assured that "easy" means your character cane take on this monster without too much trouble, "medium" means that your character should be careful, and "hard" means that your character should get help. Faster characters will now find that the monsters are faster; stronger characters will find them stronger. And if two characters are working together, the monsters will scale to the more competent character's level.

[ Event: Mist, Fog, Monsters : Round 2 ]
06 August 2010 at 02:54 pm
Marina's streets are shrouded in mist tonight. It's suddenly gotten strangely cold, and snow has started to fall. Or is that ash, when you reach out to touch it? Everything is also washed out, white and gray, including the sky... making it hard to tell whether it's 6pm or midnight, 1am or nearly dawn. An Alaskan "white night", only without the sun.

Be careful where you step: random street corners seem to have been mysteriously replaced with deep, gaping chasms. But at least everything else seems normal, right?

No, wait -- there are also monsters waiting for you in the fog.

[ The 4th Wall Event Post! ]
27 July 2010 at 11:04 pm
In the wake of GIR's event, Acumen is going to be disoriented and will have to debug. Unfortunately, disorientation will mean the debugging isn't fast enough to get things back into shape: on day 76 (August 16-23) after a malfunction, random individuals who have been or are being investigated by the justice system will begin appearing in the dome!

This is a canon event, meaning that it is literally going to happen! Existing characters will actually be experiencing this event, and they will remember it after it is over. This is also a plot-related event, meaning that even though the event itself is not plot, it is deeply entwined with the underlying premise and potential forward movement of the game's plot.

The weekend before the event, we'll put up another post about it to start the actual management part.

Guidelines for the event:

1) You can play: AU versions of characters, characters with history from other games, characters with Marina history, original characters, underage characters, and characters from cast-capped canons or from canons where you already have two characters -- in addition to anyone else you could normally app. We do however ask that you not play real people, and highly recommend that you only play one version of any given character.

2) The power level of the characters you bring in will be very low. Incoming characters may experience nausea, lack of coordination, dizziness, distorted sight or hearing, and once they recover, will find that attempting to use their abilities will bring these symptoms back.

3) Please be considerate of the fact that this is a canon event. As such, we'd appreciate it if you would not plan anything disruptive without consulting castmates and mods, or bring in characters exclusively to create massive amounts of trouble.

4) For our existing players, please be aware that playing random people for this event does not justify inactivity for August! Don't spend more than a week tagging with six character journals whose activity doesn't count while neglecting your actual characters. "I was busy fouth-walling" will not be a valid excuse for failing the AC.

5) 4th wall journals will be invited to join the community. We strongly advise you copy-paste and fill in at least the following on your journal profile or in a post. We also encourage you to have a contact post on your journal.

If players experience any trolling, god-moding, or otherwise lame experiences during the event, please contact the mods ASAP so we can keep track of it or respond to it. Do not feed trolls; again, this is a canon event and will have canon consequences, so if you experience someone coming in, announcing that their character kills everyone with his mind-lasers, just ignore and tag someone else until the mods can make them go away. It didn't happen!

Just in case, about the event?
26 July 2010 at 09:36 pm
I'm not sure if there's some OOC confusion as well, but very little of the IC confusion seems to have anyone recognizing it, so before we get any further: it's 6AM, the same time the daypost always goes up. Despite the fact that the dome still looks like the middle of the night, Monday is still and always will be 6AM-9AM, and your communicators and clocks will still tell you that that is what time it is.

The info post is referring to the dome's appearance, not to chronological time. That is why Wednesday is dawn, and then Thursday is the middle of the night again. Time is not going backwards. It only refers to what the dome looks like.

If anyone was confused, I hope that helped.

[ FYI: Update ]
23 July 2010 at 11:24 pm
Updated, and more detailed, timeline of events:

Day 73 (7/26-8/1): GIR takes over.
Day 74 (8/2-8/5): newbies arrive.
Night 74 (8/6-8/8): Silent Hill part 2!
Day 75 (8/9-8/15): blissful peace and quiet.
Day 76 (8/16-8/22): the fourth wall event.

The winners of our volunteer contest have been determined! You will each get the following amazing prizes...!

Cain: On Tuesday, you will suddenly find that you hear everyone speaking to you in song. Everyone you see will appear to be participating in some sort of choreographed musical, and you're the only one not in on it.

Kanda: On Wednesday, you will find that the dome ceases to have any gravity for you. You'll be bouncing off the walls, literally, and find it quite difficult to be on the ground for any length of time without weights. Enjoy.

Richie: On Friday, you will be shrunk down to the size of a standard drinking cup. Nothing except for your communicator will be accommodated to your height, so have fun on the long, hard hike back to your room this evening!

--late Sunday, these effects will abruptly end. You may not notice until you wake up -- if you were able to get to sleep until Acumen regained control.

[ GIR the Hideous New Warden Event ]
21 July 2010 at 10:11 pm
So here's the deal! Next week, GIR takes over the dome.

It's going to be an extremely chaotic day ICly, so everyone be prepared. GIR will have control of the dimensional stabilizer, the weather and atmospheric system, and alllll the robots. Acumen will be completely unavailable: no daypost, and no requests delivered or taken.

For your reference, this is the rough schedule of events; GIR will be making additional posts to let you know what's going on.

Did you say details? )

We require three volunteers for GIR to do weird things to, which will last until Sunday, and then stop. So volunteer which kids you want and we'll pick names from a hat! Ribbons and Orihime cannot volunteer, because they are already scheduled to get special favors from our benevolent insane overlord.

Ask if you have more questions!

GIR will be taking over the dome on day 73 (July 26th-August 1). Don't make any easily-disrupted plans for that day.

Relatedly, there will be a be a canon fourth wall event sometime in August.

More details will be forthcoming next week!

[ Event: Mist, Fog, Monsters ]
25 June 2010 at 08:07 pm
Marina's streets are shrouded in mist tonight. It's suddenly gotten strangely cold, and snow has started to fall. Or is that ash, when you reach out to touch it? Maybe it's just smoke from the fireworks....?

Be careful heading home -- random street corners seem to have been mysteriously replaced with deep, gaping chasms, so you may have to find an alternate route.

And, oh yes... there are monsters waiting for you in the fog.

NOTE: Everything in this post only applies to your character if they have darkness in their hearts. If your character has ever killed another person, or would ever kill another person, they will see these effects. If your character has ever experienced something violent that haunted them -- whether or not it is their fault, whether or not the situation was later corrected, whether or not they remember it -- they will see these effects. They are, after all, created by your character's subconscious. The worse the darkness, the worse the effects. However, a character who is from a school drama and thus has little experience with violence and is a deeply good person might see nothing at all.

There is a little wiggle room, though, if you really want your character to see monsters, and a character with more darkness in his or her heart can (optionally) experience more drastic effects.

As noted in the daypost, nothing is overtly out of place -- yet. The ventilation, food supply, etc is all working as intended despite the apparent absence of Sentience. As mentioned, the robots do not really understand you and will be completely unhelpful today unless given very specific requests that they are amenable to, such as "TAKE ME TO THE KIOSK."

But there's no point in that request, because Sentience will not respond! :D
