The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Mary laughed softly. "At the beginning of our estate's farming endeavor, we had some pigs. A friend of mine, Charles Blake, and I went out to look at them and he knew immediately that they needed to be moved. The place where they were was unsuitable and it needed to happen at once. Well.. I wasn't about to see our investment die off, so I did what I had to do, despite the fact that I was in an evening gown and he was in a tuxedo. We were filthy at the end." She smiled at the memory. "But we saved them. Then we went back to the kitchens and I made him scrambled eggs."

That was the only thing she could cook at the time. It was still nearly the only thing, though she'd had some lessons in Madison that had been helpful. Mary had liked Charles. At one time she thought there may have been something between them, but it had never fully materialized.

"It sounds like quite the adventure," Ichabod said. he felt no jealousy toward this Charles Blake. He knew the man had likely been no more than a friend to Mary. And even so, it happened some time ago, and had no bearing on their lives now.

"I've had little experience with pigs. Father was more inclined toward horses," he informed her, though that was a fact she surely knew already. He didn't speak often of his father, or his life before he'd sailed to the colonies, but neither did he purposely hide details of his early life.

They had kissed, but it hadn't gone further than that. Not as far as it went with Tony. But regardless, Mary was fully single when she had come to Madison and would not wish to have any man other than Ichabod.

"You know I love horses," she said with a grin. It had been a while since the two of them had been riding together. They would have to go again soon, now that the weather was getting a bit cooler. "Did he breed them?"

	"He did," Ichabod nodded. "There were always horses about when I was growing up." He smiled fondly at the memory of it. 	"Did you not want to follow in your father's footsteps?" Mary knew that must be hard for both fathers and sons. Of course the father wanted his son to be just like him, but sons often had their own ideas about who they were. "Or was the call of academia simply stronger?" (Reply to this) (Parent)
