WHO: EVERYONE! Seriously, EVERYONE!
WHAT: FAIR PARTY POST
WHEN: Tonight!
WHERE: The Fairgrounds
WARNINGS: Who knows?
STATUS: OPEN/ONGOING

The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Have fun!

Fairs were generally not Draco's cup of tea. He didn't particularly enjoy these kinds of events, but, at the same time, appearing there allowed him the possibility of running into Sydney. And somehow, he appreciated spending time with her more and more. It annoyed him that he had, for some reason, ceased thinking of her as a challenge to be overcome, and just a person.

The last hurdle, as far as he was concerned, was not Sydney spending time with him, but her lack of acceptance of magic. There had to be a way around it - had to be a way to get her to accept that part of herself. How did he show her? How did he help her understand?

Wand in hand, the object moving through his fingers, Draco walked towards the fair, mind thinking through the options that he had, wondering what he could come up with.

Sydney wasn't really a fan of fairs either, but she did like the people-watching opportunities they afforded. She was currently sitting on a bench, a cup of coffee in hand, watching the people pass by.

Her gaze skimmed the crowd - and caught on a flash of blond hair, and she felt her breath catch. It was a reaction that annoyed her, but she found herself with a sense of tingling anticipation every time she thought she saw Draco now. She had no idea why: the man was provoking and challenging and had no concept of respect for personal boundaries, but she found herself anticipating their next encounter whenever she did see him.

Maybe that was what made her do something as ridiculous as call out to him. "Draco."

The sound of his name made Draco start. It took only moments for him to connect the voice to its owner. The wand immediately disappeared into a pocket as he turned. That she called out to him was rather surprising and the fact that it twined around him, heightening his pleasure in seeing her.

Elegant as always, he slipped through the crowd, coming to her bench and smirked down at her. "Well, well, well," he drawled out, lowering himself to sit beside her, arm stretching out along the bench behind her. "Hello there, love, how pleasant to see you here." The smirk increased as he smelled the coffee in her cup.

"And please do share, where did you find the coffee?" She had completely corrupted him in this instance. How he hadn't managed to get to her in the same manner was infuriating, but at this time, he really just wanted a cup of coffee now.

At the food cart over there," Sydney said, gesturing with the cup. She'd stopped trying to correct him on calling her love by now; she still didn't like it, but she knew it would just be wasting her breath.

"I wouldn't buy it there, though," she continued, leaning forward slightly so she wouldn't risk settling into his arm on the back of the bench. Tolerance only went so far. "It's awful."

One day he might actually get to touch her. One day. But between then and now, Draco wasn't about to hold his breath. On the other hand, he would continue to push her level of comfort until she accepted him.

"Awful coffee sounds like a true problem," Draco said with a shudder. His taste buds may have learned to appreciate the drink, but his palette was refined enough that it knew the difference between good and bad.

"What brought you here though?" he asked, withdrawing his arm and bracing his forearms on his bent legs, his eyes on her face. "As clearly, it wasn't the coffee."

Sydney couldn't help but feel a small tingle of pride at his show of abhorrence against bad coffee. He'd come a long way since not even wanting to try coffee, and she was pleased that he'd come around. Now that was a change she could get behind. After all, coffee was life.

"I didn't know the coffee was going to be bad until I got here. Although...". She swirled the coffee in her cup and made a face. "I should've guessed. They wouldn't have very good roasters here. "

But he'd asked her why she was here, not how she felt about the coffee. "I needed a break from my paper. What are you doing here?"

Considering the information on the coffee, Draco nodded with understanding. "Then I won't bother even getting some to try." Draco gave a wistful sigh. He was craving a good cup now.

"Which paper?" he asked, mentally ticking off his to do list. He thought he had completed them - all but one that was in the stage of being mulled over, making sure he included everything.

"As for being here," Draco grinned at her, wondering how much his next statement would get under her skin, "I was just hoping to see you."

As he expected, his words drew a frown - but perhaps not for the reason he thought it would. "That seems to be a highly ineffective way to look for someone," she pointed out. "Your success in finding me aside, there are any number of ways you'd be able to see me. In class, for instance. I'd be sure to be there."

Belatedly, she thought to answer his question. "The Hammond paper."

Her concrete logic was something that Draco appreciated. His grin settled into an appreciative smile. She may be beautiful, but it was her intelligence that made him willing to take the time needed to seduce her.

"It was a plan without a great deal of planning," Draco commented. "But clearly, my guess that the lure of people watching would be irresistible was a good guess." He didn't know if she was doing that, but he definitely enjoyed that judgmental process.

But the mention of the paper had Draco blowing out a deep breath. That was the paper in the 'mulling' process. "What did you choose as your thesis?" he inquired, curious about her mind's process with the task.

"Pseudo-palladian elements in English neo-classical architecture," Sydney said, brightening at the subject of her paper. Even if she did need a break from it, it didn't mean she didn't enjoy it. "Specifically, Burlington's appropriation of Palladio's elements for the English aesthetic. What are you writing on?"

Now she was showing interest. She even turned to him to better receive his answer.

Draco considered the topic for a few moments, pondering a couple of thoughts on her subject, before answering her question. "Greek revival architecture and its reflection and connection to the new nationalism in England," Draco commented. It was an interesting topic - but then what both of them chose was.

"Any reason for that particular topic?" he asked, curious about her choice process.

Sydney nodded her approval of his topic. She hasn't thought of it herself and probably wouldn't have chosen it even if she had, but it was a rich topic full of avenues to explore. "What's your thesis?" she asked. "I'm taking issue with the Burlington's group of creating pseudo-Palladian elements and passing them off as truly faithful to Palladian design when it was clearly modified for English preferences."

"The English have a long history of taking from others and claiming as their own," Draco pointed out with a grin. "But then most of what Burlington did was a way for him to make money and a name for himself. It wasn't about honoring Palladian design in the slightest." Draco had little respect for Burlington - he was an opportunist, not a genius that he happened to be hailed as.

"Greek architectural standards as a demonstration of nationalism and support for democratic principals," Draco stated. "Though it is interesting to me that the trend continued in France and Germany - where democracy was not as large a force."

"How far are you along?" Sydney asked curiously. "I'm almost done, but I can't find a good conclusion for my paper."

There was just so much she wanted to say and had said in her paper. How was she supposed to summarize in just a few paragraphs?

"I've gotten all the way through it," Draco said, now leaning back and stretching out his legs. The smell of coffee was distracting him slightly and he dearly wanted a proper cup at the moment.

"But I am reviewing the material in my head. I don't think it is remotely polished enough and doesn't include all the information that is clearly relevant," Draco commented, and then a moment of frustration showed on his face. "I'm struggling to provide enough information to prove my point without going on for the 50 pages that the topic clearly needs."

"Yes, that's exactly the problem I'm having," Sydney said, surprised and pleased that she wasn't the only person struggling with this. "With everything that's required to explore the topic even briefly, how do you decide what the key points are?"

"Well, I can narrow down the points to a certain degree, but even then, within each one, there is so much to explain that I cannot imagine simply eliminating them. Each has equal weight in convincing others of your thesis," Draco immediate concluded, empathizing with her concern. "I should have you read mine and see if you could decipher what I should feel free to be without and what is more vital."

"I can do that," Sydney said, without much hesitation. Maybe later she'd be appalled by her willingness to help this evil magic users, but at the moment she was more interested in what he had to say, and how it could help her, too.

"Will you do the same for me?"

"Absolutely," Draco said, rather shocked that she actually agreed to spend time with him - even if they were discussing something so mundane. But it was a pleasant kind of shock.

"Would you be willing to come now and read it? We can stop and get a proper cup of coffee." That he was unintentionally luring her to his apartment got no mention.

But that was a bridge too far for Sydney, who wasn't ready to follow him to a coffee shop at the moment, let alone his apartment.

"Why don't you email it to me?" she suggested. "Then I can take the time to read it." She didn't want to do it while he waited anyway; she'd much rather take the time to go through it carefully and formulate her thoughts.

Disappointment at her answer showed on Draco's face. The teenage boy inside of him wanted to rage in frustration - why couldn't this be easy? Why couldn't she just go along with things? Was he really asking that much?

But he was Draco Malfoy. None of the frustration showed on his face as he nodded. "Perhaps we could meet tomorrow morning then? After we have each had a chance to read." It was his hope at a compromise. It was either that or he was at a point where maybe he just needed to walk away - go be with someone easy like Erin.

Not being particularly socially savvy, Sydney completely missed his disappointment. But she didn't hesitate to agree to his proposal. One evening ought to be enough to read over his paper and make suggestions on where to trim it. Besides, she wanted her paper finished too.

"Tomorrow at Starbucks?"

It was okay - she would learn to read him. He hoped that it would come, but a part of him needed to have to have that hope restored. Of course, he knew that time would make the difference. His patience would be rewarded.

"That is reasonable," Draco said, wanting more, but agreeing to settle because something was always better than nothing. "10 am work?"

"Sure," Sydney said, and even gave him a smile that veered on excited. She'd come to appreciate his intellect - even if he was an evil magic user - and was looking forward to his insights.

She got up from the bench and dumped the terrible coffee in the nearby trash can. "I'll see you tomorrow."
