The queue waiting to get in most dilapidated movie theater Remus had ever seen convinced him to give it a try. Once inside, Remus was even less confident in its structural integrity but was swept into a room by the crowd and took the only seat left. The lights flickered out, Remus heard the flickering of a movie reel and the screen came to life – literally. A zombie lunged directly at Remus, who jumped and clutched the arm rest, as well as the cold hand of the person next to him. The deep rumbling laughter however scared Remus far more.

"I suppose I'll have to take the points away," said Lupin, reflection visible in the mirror-bright surface of the Hufflepuff hourglass. "Pomona won't be happy, and Dora - "

"The last time I looked, your wife was not dancing a paso doble with the Fat Friar," commented Snape. "I doubt she'll decide to haunt you over this."

It was Snape's turn to receive a glare from Minerva. With his luck, she would break into his closet and deliberately shed fur on his robes.

"It would probably be best if you did so, Remus. I'll speak to Pomona about her wine."

"Extra enchantments," repeated Minerva. "Did she by any chance specify just what enchantments she meant?"

"Er," said Lupin. "Fortifying the alcohol content, I believe?"

Snape rolled his eyes. "No wonder you gave 250 extra points to Hufflepuff. Your late wife would have been appalled."

Lupin stared at the paving stones. "She always wanted a House Cup. Poor Dora."

One of the ubiquitous first-years trotted past. Her eyes widened at the sight of the overflowing hourglass. "Wow! We must have done something really cool!"

Snape smirked as Lupin flushed. It was nice to see a Gryffindor in trouble for a chance.

"Well what?" Severus curled his lip. Minerva joined him, eyes narrowed in a way that boded ill.

"Remus. Please explain yourself."

Lupin shifted in place. "Pomona invited me to her quarters for a midnight drink. It's the anniversary of Dora's passing and she felt sorry for me."

"And you took advantage of her generosity - "

Minerva raised her hand for silence. "I assume it was more than one drink?"

"Not exactly," said Lupin. He hung his head. "It was the wine, you see. She makes it herself with elf-stomped grapes and extra enchantments."

Severus and Minerva stared. "Extra enchantments?"

"How did Hufflepuff get so many house points?" Snape demanded, whirling and jabbing his finger at Headmistress McGonagall. "Yes, they're loyal, and they are not a disciplinary problem, but without a decent quidditch team or an academic standout, their total is impossible!"

"I was wondering that myself," said Minerva. "It makes no sense unless someone is giving extra points."

"Actually, that would be me." Lupin, heavily on his cane, gazed up at the hourglasses. "Did you know that the Hufflepuffs haven't won the Cup since the 1870s? It didn't seem fair somehow."

Severus stared. "Were you intoxicated?"

"Well - "

Snape rolled his eyes. Granger was such a ridiculous little know-it-all, even her friends looked bored.

"Come on, Hermione. Next thing you're going to say he had 'that time of the month,'" said Ginny Weasley. "He's male!"

"Professor Lupin's detentions were harsher before the full moon," came the quick reply. "Not that I had first-hand knowledge, but - "

The other girls burst out laughing. Granger scowled and stomped off after Potter.

Snape smiled thinly. It was past time that Granger learned that being right wasn't quite enough.

"Really, Severus. Your own detentions are - " Lupin was even more annoying when he laughed. " - legendary. Allow me to discipline the students as I see fit."

"The same way you disciplined your friends during those halcyon days when you were a prefect?" Snape slammed his palms on Lupin's desk and glared. "You still don't have a spine, and neither will Potter. He needs to be tempered, not coddled!"

Lupin did not reply.

Remus watched the young couple, hand in hand, strolling through the park and staring up at the almost full moon in obvious pleasure. To them the shining silvery orb was beautiful and alluring, a symbol of mystery and romance.

When the couple disappeared into the darkness, Remus glanced upward. As the pale light washed over him, he could feel claws tightening in his soul, yearning for freedom and blood. He wished he could see what others saw when they looked at the moon, but for him, no matter how beautiful it appeared, it would always be a harbinger of pain.
