When Dolores woke that morning, it was in a warm bed, with clean sheets, in a hotel that was no longer rotting from the inside out. The air wasn't exactly fresh, but it was far better than it had been the week before. There was no longer dust and mold everywhere, and more importantly, they had food and water again. Indoor plumbing was a new concept to her, and she was prepared to go outside to check where there was a pump for water before she noticed Louise using the sink in the bathroom.
The only thing that wasn't new were her clothes; she still had the same bloodstained outfit she arrived in.
While they'd all been forced outside of the hotel the previous week, it seemed like this week, they were all being forced to stay inside. There was nothing but endless fog when they looked out the windows, and she didn't see much of a point in trying to see if anything was there.
Instead, she decided to explore the hotel. The search for supplies pushed her outside before she got a chance to really look around, and the room she was most interested in exploring was the library. She and Louise had ended up camped there the night before, but all of the books, like everything else, were old and decrepit.
Now, the library was brightly lit again, slightly too warm because of the fires that never seemed to go out in the fireplace. The scent of rich, heady cigar smoke lingered in the air, despite the fact that nobody else was there. The shelves were completely filled with book after book, seemingly without organization, in shelves that lined the walls and filled out the middle of the room, from floor to ceiling. It was more books than Dolores had ever laid eyes on before, and it was beautiful.
She didn't know how long she'd been in there already, she just knew she had no hope of choosing a book any time soon. She scanned the shelves, reading each title, pulling books out now and then to read a page, before moving onto the next one. She easily could have spent hours there, and been none the wiser.
