Who: Elliot and J.J.
What: Helping Elliot gain some control
When: Thursday
Where: Tattoo parlor
Rating: medium to high

Elliot hadn't been managing all that well over the past few days. Things had been getting worse and worse. She was actually supposed to be at work, but she called in today. She just couldn't do it today. She almost set the store on fire yesterday, and today she could swear someone kept calling her name. A few times her phone had rung, but there was never anyone there. She had looked online and found a bunch of other things she was going to be going through also. Then there was the whole fact that, she had gone online and found symptoms. She now couldn't tell what might just be an imaginary symptom from reading things, and what might be real. Seeing as figuring out what was real had already become a problem, things just really weren't looking good.

She wished she was back in her room listening to her Avril Lavigne playlist, but it was the fact that she had nearly lost total control that caused her to think of J.J. The school had reluctantly assigned him as her mentor or something. He may have been a little odd, but honestly, that was what caused Elliot to like him. If he were some by the book guy, she would likely not tell him many of her problems, outside power control. She stopped outside the store to check her reflection. She regretted this immediately. She looked like shit. Usually she prided herself on her style, but, "It looks like you got dressed in your sleep." She stared blankly at the reflection. Had it just talked to her? She shook her head. No. Reflections can't speak. She fiddled with herself for a moment, doing what she could to not look like some kind of junkie. Even if she felt that's what she was. She then entered the shop.

Her stomach groaned a bit reminding her that she hadn't eaten. The metallic taste just wouldn't go away. Every time she tried to eat, she felt like vomiting. Why was she so screwed up? She looked around a little, trying to ignore the eyes on some of the artwork that just stared at her. It was all in her head. It was all in her screwed up head. She tried to act as casual as she could, but how was she to know how well it was working. She was still hearing a text message alert on her phone. She didn't even bother checking it this time, just assuming it was in her head. She waved to get J.J.'s attention. "Hey," she said, "Can I hang out for a bit?" She wasn't about to actually ask for help. She didn't do that too often. Plus, she didn't want it to seem like the only reason she was there was because she needed help.

El couldn't help but smirk when he called it out. It was the closest she had come to smiling since Monday, possibly longer, but Monday was the last day she had her pills. "Nothing big, but I called in today just to make sure I had everything under control before going back," she told him.

She still wasn't sure she should tell him about the withdrawal. Not until the customer leaves at the very least. It was illegal for her to be taking the pills without a prescription, and she didn't want to chance him getting in trouble.

The girl getting the tattoo may have given her a dirty look, but she really couldn't tell anymore. Could be she was just seeing things again. She got the same feeling at school earlier, and she was pretty sure that she wasn't that popular. She also hoped she wasn't that hated. She kept most people at a distance, but she tried not to act like a bitch or anything.

"Probably for the best." He hadn't really held down a job until he left the island. Something to do with living under his parent's roof and taking advantage of their neglectful behavior. It meant that he got a pile of money for takeout and groceries that he usually pocketed for video games and ramen. He'd really been a beanpole as a kid. But bad nutrition would do that to a person. All the same, he could identify with Elliot's need to take a day off. He'd called himself out of school a few times, or had Josie do it. There was no sense going in to school when you'd lit your homework on fire anyway.

If his client made a face, he was oblivious to it. She was probably just wimping out at her tattoo anyway. Not that there was anything comfortable about getting a tattoo on your foot. "I'm almost done here, so we can grab something to eat or whatever, if you want?" Having two kids totally didn't make this any easier. JJ's version of being socially adept when he was younger came in the form of being super cool and sort of sarcastic. This was a whole new ball game.

Elliot didn't like skipping a day of work. It meant less money for her, and since all the money her mom made went to paying for a roof over their heads, she needed the money from work for food and fire retardant material. She did appreciate his complete understanding of why she had to skip out today. It was one of the other reasons she went to him rather than anyone else. Her brother would have suggested another go of living with him so she wouldn't have to be concerned about money as much, and her mother was not really someone she went to for anything. "Especially with the crazy Christmas shoppers fighting over things they want to get for their spoiled children," she eyed him suspiciously, "You aren't one of those, right?"

The mention of food caused her stomach to both groan in hunger and lurch with the memory of the taste she still had in her mouth, but she nodded. She did need to try. She didn't want to look like she was anorexic or anything. She felt a bit self conscious of hat already. She was pretty sure that she had already lost a few pounds, and she was fairly sure she wasn't fat. That meant that she was probably getting to an unhealthy point. She nodded to the question, "That sounds like a good idea."

"Fuck no." JJ spat in disgust, "I'm a total internet shopper. Fuck lines and doorbuster sales, man." He'd never liked shopping. The internet was God. He wished he could take credit for it. It was much sneakier to hide presents when they came in the mail in boring brown boxes, too.

He wiped down the client's foot to check his work and get rid of some excess blood and ink. Just a few finishing touches and he'd be done. "Cool, give me like five more minutes on this and I'll be done. In the meantime you can grab a soda or some water from the fridge in the office, cool?"

She snickered at his expressive disdain for store shopping. It pleased her to know that the one adult, aside from her brother, that she didn't mind being around was not in the category of those hypocritical parents she gets annoyed with at work. She still couldn't help but feel the eyes on this one particular tiger were watching her. It was seriously creeping her out, but she just kept reminding herself that it was just her imagination.

She nodded at the offer of something to drink. "Cool," she told him as she got to her feet and made her way to the office. Damn tiger kept following her. Part of her mind tried to convince her the thing was real, but she just kept reminding herself it wasn't. It couldn't be. It was inside the damn wall for god's sake. She had the feeling that she was probably starting to warm up a bit, so she decided water would probably be the best choice. She tried to keep her focus on the conversation. She didn't want to distract him much, but she also didn't want to start a fire here. "What do you have in mind for food?"

Despite the fact that the tattoo he was working on was totally cliche and boring, it looked pretty good if he did say so himself and he was able to quickly put a few finishing touches on it so he could send the woman on her way. His schedule happened to be clear for the rest of the afternoon, lucky for Elliot, so he could just leave his station to be broken down by interns, and the rest of the artists could close shop later when they were done with their appointments. Perfect.

"Anything you want, kid. I'll eat anything." He could really go for a cheeseburger, but he wasn't about to say so. He wasn't the one who needed food and conversation, after all. Plus once food was in his face, he was likely to consume whatever it was. He wiped down the woman's foot to make sure he hadn't missed any spots. Nope. Perfect. As usual. Despite the interruption, the woman seemed pleased and gave him a pretty decent tip before he plastic wrapped her tattoo and sent her on her way.

"I just gotta wash my hands and we can be out of here. You have my full attention."

Anything she wanted. Right now everything tasted the same, so Elliot really didn't have a preference. She tried to think of something simple, and lucky for JJ, that meant, "Burgers maybe?" She already knew she was probably just going to eat enough to make sure JJ didn't get too worried about her. She only hoped that she would be able to keep whatever she ate down. She took a few sips of the water she had grabbed. The metallic taste was still in her mouth, but she managed to keep her face relaxed as best she could. "Unless you want something else."

She still hadn't officially decided to say anything about the stuff she was taking, or rather wasn't taking at the moment. She really wasn't completely sure what she was planning on telling him. She just needed to talk to someone, and JJ was the only person who might know some way to help her; after all, he probably got sick when he was younger. She figured she would take that route for now. If it turned out she needed to let him know about the medicine she would tell him. "Do you ever lose control when you're sick?"

"No, burgers sound great." Food sounded great. Of course, JJ had grown up mostly feeding himself (or letting the twins make dinner, which wasn't always that great either) so food was food, and as long as his stomach was full. Being an adult and having two well paying businesses had enhanced his ability to judge good food for bad food, but he was still partial to day old pizza and greasy burgers. He dried off his hands and grabbed a hoodie. He wasn't even sure what it was like outside, but they weren't going far. Conveniently, there was a great burger place around the corner.

Her question was not at all surprising. She looked a little out of sorts. "Sometimes," He admitted, "Though not as much anymore. When I was your age, anything could set it off."

Elliot walked to the door, ignoring the slithering snake since it was just a picture on the wall. It wasn't real. It was not real.

"How do you control it so well now?" the question was made to be vague. She wanted to know everything, for she needed some way to keep it together. At the moment she felt sick, but even when she felt in complete control, she still was afraid of getting too close to someone. What if she hurt them by accident? What if she hurt one of the friends she already had? She only really had two, maybe three if she counted Aaron, but she was always on the fence about considering him to be a friend. He was kind to her, and he didn't really ask questions when she needed the pills, so she was at least friendly with him.

She was also assuming that he controlled it "well". He supposed that by the government's standards, he did. But the government also let a reasonable amount of rat droppings pass into the nation's peanut butter. He snorted out loud as that thought crossed his mind. "I do alright." He corrected her, "It's really just about practice. No one likes to hear that, but it's what you have to do."

JJ paused for a moment and then added, "And stop being afraid of it." Fear really just made it worse. If you could understand it, know your triggers and just get comfortable with setting things on fire at will, controlling it became much easier. And then you could have a little fun.

"You do better than me at least," Elliot remarked. She had the feeling he was right. No. It was obviously more than a feeling. He already went through a lot of what she was going through, and as far as she could tell, he didn't even take stuff to help him. Elliot knew that he must be right. Even if it was only for the fact that she never lost control on a daily basis. It only seemed to happen in moments of extreme stress.

"But Smokey will be so disappointed," she commented with the sarcastic air of concern, "Telling me to go and make fires on purpose." She gave a bit of a smile, which felt kind of nice as she hadn't been doing that much that week. "I guess practicing more would help," she agreed, "If it will help keep me from hurting anyone on purpose, couldn't hurt."

She walked out the door, thankful to be out of there. Normally she liked seeing all of the artwork, but with all of the pictures moving around like they were, she had been growing a bit nauseous. Not to mention a bit freaked out. The air around her was likely a few degrees hotter than usual, but she was still keeping a decent hold on it. "Which way are we going?"

She had a point there. But he was also twice as old, and so he'd had the time to figure out how to turn things on and off at will. For the most part. It was sixteen extra years of practice. Just lucky that he'd been born first.

"He'll get over it. I'll find a contained place for you to set things on fire. I'm sure there are some condemned buildings somewhere around here." Maybe. Or he'd have to buy something on the cheap and fire proof it. The school was probably not the best place for her to practice fire things. They tried, he was sure, but it was a tricky business. "Knowing how to use it is probably the first step in controlling it." He agreed.

Once outside, he lit up a cigarette--no lighter required. "Left. It's like, three doors down. You won't miss it."

She looked at him, some skepticism mixed with a bit of thankfulness as she tried to decide how serious he was about this. "You'd do that for me?" she asked. She mainly had to trust that she wouldn't get hot enough to overwhelm whoever her spotter was. Her brother was typically the best, but even he had to back away after the air got to a certain temperature. "Would I get in trouble for doing that?" she asked, "Not like starting fires is a very covert power after all."

It didn't take long to get to the place, seeing as it was only a few doors down. She waited for him to finish his cigarette. She wasn't in a huge rush to eat anyways. She was hungry, sure, but she still felt nauseous as well. It was the most annoyingly absurd feeling, being hungry and sick at the same time that is.

"Well, I imagine the school would probably help, since it's really their job I'm doing." Not that he minded. He didn't want them to fuck up the job. Anyway, he was cool with all the people who ran the place or whatever, but they hadn't exactly been helpful when he'd been accidentally setting things on fire when he was a kid, and he'd figured things out just fine with out them thanks. Granted, they'd all been kids at the time with powers of their own to think about, but still. He didn't expect they knew anything about Elliot's situation. At all. Fire was his expertise. "You might. I'm just spitballing. I'll come up with something." Frankly, he'd simply set things on fire whenever he felt like it as a kid. In a city like New York, that wasn't exactly feasible.

She needn't have waited. He extinguished his cigarette (sucked the fire out of it, more like) and tucked it back into his pocket. He'd finish it later. No use in being wasteful. Unfortunately for her stomach, they were going in. JJ even held the door for her.

Elliot gave a small smile as JJ held the door for her, but she was feeling a bit uneasy about the whole food thing still. "Thanks," she told him as she ventured inside. The smell was wonderful due to how hungry she actually was, yet at the same time, she began to feel a bit queasy as well. How was that even possible? She found a booth nearby and settled into it. She ignored the stares of the people wondering where her jacket was. She was used to it, and honestly, she had gotten to where she no longer cared. She just didn't like jackets. At least she didn't like them on her. Some people she felt looked perfect with the right jacket. So, since her power allowed her to never have to concern herself with being cold, she just never wore them.

"I'll try my best," she told him, "Hopefully I won't burn my home down again." She gave a short laugh, though her expression was obviously not amused by the thought. The memory was something still haunted her to this day, as well as being the reason she continued to take the pills. "I guess I could just work with small scale stuff for now," she suggested, "Can't get in too much trouble for burning a candle, right?"

He could relate. The number of times he'd nearly burned down the Allen house on Frye Island was ridiculous. But it had always been on accident. He'd been somewhat neglected as a kid, but it hadn't been a terrible upbringing. Just a largely unsupervised one.

"Well, trying is all anyone can really ask." He shrugged, "Maybe someone will get wise and put sprinklers in." It was really the most obvious answer in fireproofing. Sure you ended up with some water damage, but at least nobody died?

"I don't see why you would." JJ smirked and waved down a waitress.

Elliot too, was mostly unsupervised, yet she seemed to be more frightened of her power than JJ was. Her mother had been trying to be more mother-like lately, so it had really been Elliot who had been distant lately.

When the waitress came, Elliot ordered a sprite hoping it could help her get rid of the taste so she could actually eat. She also asked for a small hamburger along with some fries. She hoped she would be able to eat. She knew she probably looked like one of those boney girls who starved themselves on purpose.

After the waitress left, Elliot closed her eyes for a moment in an attempt to clear her head. She was getting a bit tired of having to figure out what was real and what wasn't. "I doubt we can afford it," she replied. "I'd probably be better off just practicing in the bathtub."

JJ ordered a huge double bacon cheese burger for himself and some fried pickles in addition to the fries that came with that monster burger. He still ate like a fifteen year old, despite Mary-Beth's best efforts.

"Probably not a bad idea." It was his personal opinion that the government ought to have provided the means to power proof the homes of some of the former project members. He didn't think it should have been left all up to them, the victims. "Here's a question. How come you don't stay at the school. I mean, I'm sure living at home affords you some more freedom, but they have the means to fireproof for you."

Elliot half shrugged. She didn't like to talk about her reasons much. She was ashamed of one, and the other kind of embarrassed her. If she ever had to talk about it, she obviously opted for the one that wouldn't get her in trouble. "Kind of afraid of what Mom would do if left alone," she admitted. She may not like her mother much, but she didn't want her to become too depressed or something. It was obviously a flimsy reason, but usually it would get people to leave it. Hopefully JJ wouldn't press the subject much, seeing as the other reason was the fact that she was taking something that wasn't quite legal for her to take without prescription. "She's not as bad as she was when we first got off the island, but still."

She pulled out a small pencil, small due to being used so much, and began drawing on her napkin. She was feeling a bit nervous about telling JJ the half truth. He was cool, so misdirecting him didn't feel too right.

Elliot's mom had graduated high school the year before JJ started, but it wasn't hard to know or remember who she was. She was closer in age to Josie and Jacen, and if he remembered correctly, a bit like Josie was in high school. Luckilly for Josie, things had worked out in her favor. Life hadn't exactly been as kind to Karina. He didn't know any specifics. It wasn't as if they were friends or something, but he was aware that she'd never really settled down, and Elliot made him feel like she wasn't a completely... Attentive mother.

"That's not really your job, kid. Mothers are supposed to worry about you, not the other way around. It can't really be that bad anyway?" It was a question, not a statement.

Elliot avoided eye contact. She made like it was due to her drawing, and she would keep talking. She just was hoping that she wouldn't give anything away. "I guess she's been trying to step up ever since Xavier left," she answered, "I guess she realized how much more of an adult he was." Her brother had even tried to take her after he got settled. That was the first time Elliot actually saw concern in her mother's eyes. When she and the police showed up to take Elliot back.

She had the feeling that she was only giving JJ more ground for her needing to go ahead and live on campus. She also knew that there were likely only two people in this world who could talk her into at least trying it. One was Xavier, the other was the man talking to her right now. Well... maybe a third.

"So? If she's stepping up, then she should want you to live somewhere that you could safely practice your abilities without fear of burning everything down, you know?" The waitress dropped by with their drinks and didn't flinch at the mention of powers. JJ's was a pretty mutant friendly neighborhood.

He may or may not have had something to do with it.

Elliot had definitely lost this little debate. She doubted her other reason would convince him otherwise. It would actually be more likely to convince him even more that it was a good idea to live at the school. She remained quiet for a moment as she wracked her brain for a rebut, but it was no use. With her help, JJ had her cornered. "I guess," she finally said, "Maybe I'll talk to her about it."

She took a sip of the sprite, attempting to ignore the metallic taste. If she focused hard, she found she could taste the soda a little. It still wasn't wonderful, and she still had to hold back the feeling in her throat. She did her best to hide it. "Is it difficult to draw tattoos?" she asked, hoping that she could change the subject.
