Who: Elliot and J.J.
What: Helping Elliot gain some control
When: Thursday
Where: Tattoo parlor
Rating: medium to high

Elliot hadn't been managing all that well over the past few days. Things had been getting worse and worse. She was actually supposed to be at work, but she called in today. She just couldn't do it today. She almost set the store on fire yesterday, and today she could swear someone kept calling her name. A few times her phone had rung, but there was never anyone there. She had looked online and found a bunch of other things she was going to be going through also. Then there was the whole fact that, she had gone online and found symptoms. She now couldn't tell what might just be an imaginary symptom from reading things, and what might be real. Seeing as figuring out what was real had already become a problem, things just really weren't looking good.

She wished she was back in her room listening to her Avril Lavigne playlist, but it was the fact that she had nearly lost total control that caused her to think of J.J. The school had reluctantly assigned him as her mentor or something. He may have been a little odd, but honestly, that was what caused Elliot to like him. If he were some by the book guy, she would likely not tell him many of her problems, outside power control. She stopped outside the store to check her reflection. She regretted this immediately. She looked like shit. Usually she prided herself on her style, but, "It looks like you got dressed in your sleep." She stared blankly at the reflection. Had it just talked to her? She shook her head. No. Reflections can't speak. She fiddled with herself for a moment, doing what she could to not look like some kind of junkie. Even if she felt that's what she was. She then entered the shop.

Her stomach groaned a bit reminding her that she hadn't eaten. The metallic taste just wouldn't go away. Every time she tried to eat, she felt like vomiting. Why was she so screwed up? She looked around a little, trying to ignore the eyes on some of the artwork that just stared at her. It was all in her head. It was all in her screwed up head. She tried to act as casual as she could, but how was she to know how well it was working. She was still hearing a text message alert on her phone. She didn't even bother checking it this time, just assuming it was in her head. She waved to get J.J.'s attention. "Hey," she said, "Can I hang out for a bit?" She wasn't about to actually ask for help. She didn't do that too often. Plus, she didn't want it to seem like the only reason she was there was because she needed help.

He could relate. The number of times he'd nearly burned down the Allen house on Frye Island was ridiculous. But it had always been on accident. He'd been somewhat neglected as a kid, but it hadn't been a terrible upbringing. Just a largely unsupervised one.

"Well, trying is all anyone can really ask." He shrugged, "Maybe someone will get wise and put sprinklers in." It was really the most obvious answer in fireproofing. Sure you ended up with some water damage, but at least nobody died?

"I don't see why you would." JJ smirked and waved down a waitress.

Elliot too, was mostly unsupervised, yet she seemed to be more frightened of her power than JJ was. Her mother had been trying to be more mother-like lately, so it had really been Elliot who had been distant lately.

When the waitress came, Elliot ordered a sprite hoping it could help her get rid of the taste so she could actually eat. She also asked for a small hamburger along with some fries. She hoped she would be able to eat. She knew she probably looked like one of those boney girls who starved themselves on purpose.

After the waitress left, Elliot closed her eyes for a moment in an attempt to clear her head. She was getting a bit tired of having to figure out what was real and what wasn't. "I doubt we can afford it," she replied. "I'd probably be better off just practicing in the bathtub."

JJ ordered a huge double bacon cheese burger for himself and some fried pickles in addition to the fries that came with that monster burger. He still ate like a fifteen year old, despite Mary-Beth's best efforts.

"Probably not a bad idea." It was his personal opinion that the government ought to have provided the means to power proof the homes of some of the former project members. He didn't think it should have been left all up to them, the victims. "Here's a question. How come you don't stay at the school. I mean, I'm sure living at home affords you some more freedom, but they have the means to fireproof for you."

Elliot half shrugged. She didn't like to talk about her reasons much. She was ashamed of one, and the other kind of embarrassed her. If she ever had to talk about it, she obviously opted for the one that wouldn't get her in trouble. "Kind of afraid of what Mom would do if left alone," she admitted. She may not like her mother much, but she didn't want her to become too depressed or something. It was obviously a flimsy reason, but usually it would get people to leave it. Hopefully JJ wouldn't press the subject much, seeing as the other reason was the fact that she was taking something that wasn't quite legal for her to take without prescription. "She's not as bad as she was when we first got off the island, but still."

She pulled out a small pencil, small due to being used so much, and began drawing on her napkin. She was feeling a bit nervous about telling JJ the half truth. He was cool, so misdirecting him didn't feel too right.

Elliot's mom had graduated high school the year before JJ started, but it wasn't hard to know or remember who she was. She was closer in age to Josie and Jacen, and if he remembered correctly, a bit like Josie was in high school. Luckilly for Josie, things had worked out in her favor. Life hadn't exactly been as kind to Karina. He didn't know any specifics. It wasn't as if they were friends or something, but he was aware that she'd never really settled down, and Elliot made him feel like she wasn't a completely... Attentive mother.

"That's not really your job, kid. Mothers are supposed to worry about you, not the other way around. It can't really be that bad anyway?" It was a question, not a statement.

Elliot avoided eye contact. She made like it was due to her drawing, and she would keep talking. She just was hoping that she wouldn't give anything away. "I guess she's been trying to step up ever since Xavier left," she answered, "I guess she realized how much more of an adult he was." Her brother had even tried to take her after he got settled. That was the first time Elliot actually saw concern in her mother's eyes. When she and the police showed up to take Elliot back.

She had the feeling that she was only giving JJ more ground for her needing to go ahead and live on campus. She also knew that there were likely only two people in this world who could talk her into at least trying it. One was Xavier, the other was the man talking to her right now. Well... maybe a third.

"So? If she's stepping up, then she should want you to live somewhere that you could safely practice your abilities without fear of burning everything down, you know?" The waitress dropped by with their drinks and didn't flinch at the mention of powers. JJ's was a pretty mutant friendly neighborhood.

He may or may not have had something to do with it.

Elliot had definitely lost this little debate. She doubted her other reason would convince him otherwise. It would actually be more likely to convince him even more that it was a good idea to live at the school. She remained quiet for a moment as she wracked her brain for a rebut, but it was no use. With her help, JJ had her cornered. "I guess," she finally said, "Maybe I'll talk to her about it."

She took a sip of the sprite, attempting to ignore the metallic taste. If she focused hard, she found she could taste the soda a little. It still wasn't wonderful, and she still had to hold back the feeling in her throat. She did her best to hide it. "Is it difficult to draw tattoos?" she asked, hoping that she could change the subject.
