Who: Bret, Bret's parents, Tommy, Glibt, Mark, Harvey, Paul and a couple of cameos by Broadway actresses.
What: Bret's Broadway Gives Back show.
When: Saturday, 7:30 PM
Where: A small bar/venue in Manhattan.
Warning: None.
Note: I'm going to skim through a large chunk (if not all of) the show, allow for a couple of response comments, and then the bulk of the threading will be done post-show at the bar. The (incomplete) set list is HERE
Bret was actually really impressed with the turn-out that night. He supposed having Kerry and Eden's name out there was actually more of a draw than anything else, but he saw a lot of people there in Wicked and RENT t-shirts and had the feeling right off the bat that he knew the direction the show was going to go. But with two Elphaba's there, he could see the girls duking it out for songs if they got too many. He was only a little nervous - the same pre-show butterflies that everyone got - but mostly he was excited. All of the performers plus Harvey, Tommy, Mark and Bret's parents were in the front row - easiest to get up to the stage when they had to.
There was a list of shows on the blackboard (written under the words: ACT UP, FIGHT AIDS) on stage, shows they'd all been in and shows that the crowd of roughly one-hundred and fifty could shout-out songs from and get the performers on stage to do them.
And then they were off..
Kerry and Eden split the first two Wicked songs with an on-stage game of Paper-Rock-Scissors and then someone Eden stayed for a rendition of Over The Moon, followed by Kerry getting the crowd all hyped up with Don't Rain on My Parade (Bret thought there was a Gleek or two in the crowd) and then the two of them did Take Me or Leave Me, which would have been a mess of giggles had they not pulled it together at the last minute.
Still thinking his suspicions were correct, Bret got comfortable with his hosting gig and didn't spend a lot of time thinking about singing until someone yelled out for one of the songs from Next to Normal. He hadn't been expecting it, but he'd planned for it, and Bret managed to somehow coerce the pianist and his mom to join him on stage for the trio of songs that built up to one of his favorite pieces to perform. It wasn't just because it was an incredibly driven and emotional song from a show much the same, but it was because he got to leer at the crowd and play up the not-crooner, not-prince dark side of his acting career.
About midway through, someone yelled for Kerry to do a duet that none of the guys who were there actually knew. That was the first time Bret dragged Harvey Stonewall on stage, but it wouldn't be the last time - that was for sure.
Then it was Bret, Kerry, Bret, Eden, Bret, Kerry and suddenly he wasn't so consumed with the worry that they had forgotten all about him anymore when he was running up there to do songs from shows he wasn't sure that anyone had even heard of. So okay, he had fans. It was pretty spectacular to see that people were actually there for him. But after he came off the stage the last time, one of the bartenders whispered that they only had a half hour left. He'd let Kerry finish her last song and polish off the Broadway round of the show before they threw the shout-outs to the wind and did a few things that they wanted to do for themselves.
And to start it off, he was planning on dragging Harvey back up on stage... Giving him license to do anything he wanted, so long as the pianist knew the music could have been dangerous, but he seemed like he'd had a little much to drink and Bret had high hoped for utter hilarity.
