"That was Harvey Stonewall, Director of Communications at the Empire State Pride Agenda..." Bret said again when he'd come back on stage after Harvey's performance, still trying to stifle his giggles. "How the hell do you follow that?" There were a few laughs from the crowd - who'd been giggling all night because they were all a little drunk and the performers were just being silly.
"I'd like to introduce the assistant-director of the Midtown LGBT youth center, and my best friend-" pause for awww's - "Paul Keller."
Paul had been up on stage once before when they did Seasons of Love, but this time he came up and took one of the two acoustic guitars that were sitting off to the side of the stage, shaking his head at Bret who was still trying not to laugh. "This one's for you, Harv..." he said, grinning in the direction of Paul's equally smirking boyfriend. And then Paul started to sing. Bret knew how good his voice was and he was sure that Harvey had some sneaking suspicion, but no one else had any idea. Bret wouldn't mention that they'd been thinking about recording an album together as soon as he was finished with Wicked. Instead, after the applause, he left the stage and let Paul do one more by himself.
Bret then invited all the performers (minus one very tipsy Harvey Stonewall) back for a ridiculous rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody done from various points of the stage and crowd before he gathered everyone on stage for a final song.
"It's been a fun, funny night and I'm so happy to see all of you here and I hope to see you back again when we do more shows like this. But this last one," Bret said, standing at the center mic, "is for all the people here who have spent their lives dedicated and passionate towards the fight for civil rights for everyone - no matter their race, religion or sexual orientation. And after all, that's what we're all here for tonight - to raise awareness that we're still fighting as hard as we've ever been fighting... From myself, Kerry, Eden, Paul and the whole band... Thank you."
