"You deserve to have a little bit of an ego," Bret said, smirking back at him. "Not that I don't love how sweet and generous you are, but like I said... hold your head up." It was something Bret was going to keep mentioning because he really wanted Tommy to have pride in who he was - how smart and capable and amazing he was. If anyone didn't see that, they were stupid.
Paul could add his own commentary, but he knew Tommy hadn't told Bret who he was yet, so he didn't want to let on that he knew as much as he did. So instead he just watched the two of them snuggle in close together, knowing how wonderful it was to have someone you loved that much. And even if they weren't saying it out loud, he could tell in the casual way they acted next to each other, the way they looked at each other across the table. He thought it was really sweet and he was happy that his best friend had finally found someone who made him that happy, especially knowing the rough time Bret went through with his last relationship.
Paul took a deep breath and nodded, "Yep, that's about it. Only one is a real talent, you know..." he chuckled, "the rest is just very hard work and a lot of faking it." He finished off the last of Tommy's beer and then plunked the empty bottle in the middle of the table. "I don't know what I want to do with it," he said. "I just know that I want to do something important, something that can help people. I sort of... want to do what Harvey has done," he said, knowing that Tommy would understand the deeper implications of that.
