There had been no big shouts of 'surprise', Seamus knew Dean far too well for that. He'd just lead him up to The Roost after Battlescars and let him push the door open to reveal a sandy floor, warm salt-and-coconut scented air and a 'Starry Night' sky. There was a bar at one end of the room, stocked and ready for people to help themselves (Seamus wasn't working tonight, though he'd doubtless end up there showing off his cocktail skills at some point). Along the side wall were tables for the food, already containing Aunt Rose's jerk chicken and Seamus's attempt at a pineapple upside down cake, vastly outdone by Aileen Finnigan's cherry cheesecake next to it. The rest of the large room was scattered with deckchairs, apart from a small decked area for dancing. The music of steel drums floated from nowhere and despite the bleak grey sky outside the room glowed with sunlight.

Dean's face split into a huge grin as he pushed open the door and saw what they'd done to the room. His birthday's were never a surprise as such, just the precise setting was unknown. The smell of the air was soothing and it just looked so warm.

He automatically moved in and then bent to remove his shoes. "This is brilliant, thanks guys," he said, hugging Seamus and smiling broadly at Dominic. He guessed that between the two of them they'd done most of the work and come up with most of the ideas.

Then he looked over at the table of food and he sprang away to take a look. "You've been conspiring with my family! How did they keep that quiet?"

Seamus hugged Dean back hard. He loved birthdays, loved making his friends happy and having this empty space to use as a venue had really facilitated that, plus Dominic was some kind of genius to be able to do all of this. He pulled Dominic into a quick hug of thanks before sending him off to the bar - officially off duty now that the work was done.

He followed Dean, laughing. "That I don't know, I was sure Cat was going to spill the beans." He tugged Dean over to the cakes on the second table. "Told you there was something else." He was proud, despite the burnt edges, but he didn't know how it was going to taste. He gestured to the cake. "Took a leaf out of your book and made it myself."

"Well, that would explain the funny look she kept giving me last night. I kept asking her if she liked the food. And she kept saying yes and looking twitchy. So that's one less family mystery." Dean shrugged with good humour. It would never have been his mum or aunt that gave the game away and it's entirely possible his Dad had never known in the first place, but his sisters were terrible secret keepers.

Dean crossed to the other table, now bare toes wriggling in the soft sand when he got there and looked down at Seamus' attempt at a cake. "Yes you did, it's...well, we can eat around the burnt bits right?" he said with a cheeky grin. "Honestly though, I'm pretty impressed. It doesn't look so bad at all."

The party was in full swing with beach-inspired music reverberating around the room. Ernie had put his healer-ness away for the day, intent on having fun without having to remind anyone about the ills of overindulgence or apparating safetly without splinching one-self. Instead, he had taken partial ownership over the dance floor and took seriously his duty of making sure everyone danced at least once with him.

Now, it was Seamus' turn, and the fact that his friend may have been a bit tipsy would only make Ernie's job easier.

"Come on, mate," he said, grabbing for Seamus' hands. "You can't let me dance alone. Listen to this good music - you can't resist it!"

Seamus knew that his birthday, in a safe space, with people he knew was one of few occasions where Dean would feel comfortable drinking enough to actually effect him. So, just in case anything happened, Seamus was still mostly sober. Perhaps a bit more euphoric than was usual, a touch more free in his movements, but not out of it. Still, when Ernie clutched at his hands Seamus nodded and let himself be lead out onto the dance floor.

He liked to dance, though he wasn't much good, and he didn't get the chance that often. There were gay clubs, of course, but his schedule only allowed for that once in a blue moon. So he swung one arm easily around Ernie's shoulders saying, "Sure, sure, but I can't do any of that fancy footwork you've been doing." He'd kicked his shoes off earlier and the wood was warm beneath his bare feet. "It's been a good party. Dean's happy."

Ernie too had lost his shoes long ago, had even gone all-in for the beach theme with shorts and a loud, tropical shirt that suited his personality. "No fancy footwork needed, just one-two one-two. But I'll let you pass, for now."

He held Seamus close as he moved them in time to the music, Ernie's hand holding the one of Seamus' that wasn't around his shoulders. He loved to dance and sway with someone in his arms, letting the music live through him.

"So the party is brilliant, of course, thanks to you and Dominic. I think Dean's happy. Are you?"

Oliver and OPEN

As was typical for a man more accustomed to caring about quaffles than clocks, Oliver showed up fashionably late for the party for his fellow Gryffindor. Dean didn't play while Oliver did, but he had a fondness for anyone who called the Tower their home. He brought Dean a bottle of Oak-Cured Mead (the finest from Rosmerta, who was still delicious all these years later) and a set of paintbrushes that he was told were quite fine.

He set them down at the bar and took in the tropical scene and nodded in appreciation. He liked the laid back vibe to the room, and if he noticed a lot of boys dancing together, he wasn't shocked or minded much. He poured himself a tequila and started dancing, moving his way towards the center. It wasn't a party of Oliver Wood wasn't there, after all, so this one needed to get started.

Harry had almost forgotten about Dean's party, though he'd ever every intention of going. He'd just gone into the office that morning to see about some paperwork, and gotten caught up in a cold case that had been stagnant for months. Thinking to follow up some old leads, he'd worked straight through lunch and it was coming up on dinner time before he remembered he had somewhere to be. Hopefully he hadn't missed the party entirely.

After Flooing back to apartment to grab Dean's present, and a change of clothes since he invariably ended up sooty after Flooing, then Apparated to Diagon Alley. It was a quick walk from there to the pub and up to the Roost where the party was. He took a minute to admire the beachy atmosphere, all that was missing was the actual ocean. It was nice, even if there was a lot of dancing.

He'd never been much of a dancer, but this was a party and he did want to enjoy himself. Maybe he could just find a nice quiet corner from which to do that.

Oliver was shaking his hips and waving his free hand in the air when he caught sight of a familiar face. "Harry, ole chap!" he cried, dancing toward his friend and wrapping him in a bear hug, avoiding spilling his drink. "How are you, lad? Been far too long. Hope you're keeping the world safe. We better be safe, if it means you're not Seeking, eh?"

It was good to see Harry out and about having fun. Oliver was generally the type to always make sure his friends weren't taking life too seriously. "Glad to see you here, wasn't sure if you'd come."

Harry, who had been accused of having a huge ego all his life, normally didn't find jokes like this amusing. Tonight though, it didn't bother him. Both because he knew they were teasing, and because it seemed like an awful lot of effort to get upset over a little joke. Much more fun to just play along. So he just snickered, and winked at them both.

"We're going to have to kill you now you know our secret. Unless you can give us proper incentive to keep it quiet."

When Oliver pulled him closer to Susan, and then they both had their hands on his hips, Harry wasn't entirely sure what to do with his own hands. Eventually it seemed easiest to put one over Susan's shoulders, and the other on her hip, though Oliver's closeness meant Harry was touching him too. No one seemed to mind, and it was clear it was just innocent fun. It had been awhile since he'd had anything of that sort.

"Well, the intent is pure even if the execution is lacking."

Oliver had been told over and over that his ego was too big to fit in a room, but instead of getting too upset over it, Oliver made a habit of making it a joke. "Hey, some people might say my head is too big, but to them I say well, they worship it as a god in some small eastern European countries. So who's laughing now, huh?" he said, a huge grin on his face. He liked Harry winking back. It was good, this was fun.

He made a face of mock horror, stopping his gyrating for a moment. "Oh dear! What kind of incentive do you need, do you think?" he asked, an eyebrow raising slightly. He had to keep back a smile; he wasn't sure how Harry or Susan would answer that.

"Ahh, Harry, come off it," he added now that the other wizard was properly in the sandwich with them. He let a hand trail over Susan's neck, and was slightly annoyed when the music slowed down. Well, he guessed they were slow dancing. It didn't seem like Susan minded that he was staring down her blouse, but he also didn;t want to look TOO much like a creeper.

"Even a slow dance can't slow us down," he mused, though he'd lowered his voice, his smile going a bit crooked. Maybe he'd had more to drink than he thought, but his mind was getting swirly.

Hannah was a bit later to Dean's party than she'd like, but one of her patients had gone into labor a few days early. Not to worry, however, Mummy and Baby were both happy and healthy getting to know one another. Stopping home just long enough to change her clothes,pick up her present: a gift certificate to Amanuensis Quills, and fetch the tray of biscuits or everyone. There would be enough food, undoubtedly, but Hannah just felt wrong if she didn't bring something along.

She stopped long enough to drop off her packages before getting something to drink and going to say hello to the birthday boy himself.

Dean had foregone the centre stage of the main group of arrivals some time ago, and so far waved off offers of dancing. Instead he'd settled in one of the deckchairs, chatting to anyone who came by and sipping slowly but steadily on his drink (complete with umbrella).

He smiled the slightly careless smile of the tipsy and cheerful as he saw Hannah approaching, and waved at her. He tried to lever himself out of the deckchair but his limbs weren't quite cooperating and he fell back with a little huff and a laugh.

"Hi Hannah, um I'd get up but apparently I'm tipsier than I thought and I don't want to make another attempt and end up on my face!" He giggled a little.

George never knew what to give adults for their birthdays. Didn't adults usually already have everything they needed? Still, it was a party, so he'd managed a bottle of amusing looking liqour and an interesting art book he'd found while wandering in town, all tucked into a bag full of sweets from the shop.

He set the bag among a flurry of other gifts and poured himself a drink before finding an out-of-the-way spot to perch. Not that he planned to be a wallflower, but everyone seemed to be chatting and drink first, party second was his general rule.

Sweaty and breathless from dancing with Oliver and Susan, Harry finally excused himself to get a drink. He helped himself to the bar, just a Butterbeer for now, and spotted George standing off to the side. Thinking that a quiet spot of conversation with a good friend sounded like just the thing, he headed over.

"Hiya George," he said with a grin. "How's things?"

The day wouldn't be complete without a dance with Hannah, Ernie thought as he aimed himself in her direction. He adored her like the sister he'd never had, and without her, his life was just that little bit emptier.

He barely left her room to protest as he grabbed her hand and pulled her to the dance area, and swept her in his arms to music that was neither too slow or fast. "My life is complete now that you're here," he teased. "How was work?"

Hannah laughed as she was dragged into the dancing. Though she was tired, it was hard to deny Ernie's face, as earnest as it was. Her mouth quirked upwards at the small pun she'd made to herself. It had been such a common joke that it had gone from trite and unfunny to something that required a groan and eye roll. "We had an unexpected birth this morning, but everyone is safe and healthy. So nothing to worry about." One of the other midwives would be keeping an eye and ear open so Hannah could enjoy her friend's birthday.

She let him whirl her around, though the music wasn't quite suited for such moves. "And how is work for you, good sir?"

Lavender and OPEN

This party was as close as Lavender had got to a beach in quite some time, which was probably a sad reflection on the amount of time that she took off work, but she was on her second cocktail that tasted mostly of pineapple but probably contained lethal amounts of alcohol, so she was feeling a nice buzz and couldn't really lament for too long.

She brushed a little sand from her dress - wow, that stuff was going to get everywhere, wasn't it? - as she wandered over to the food tables to peruse what was on offer. Lavender grinned as she spotted the pineapple upside cake, sure that was Seamus's handiwork; she decided maybe there was such a thing as too much pineapple and maybe she might give that one a miss.

"Lavender darling," Susan cried as she saw her approach the table. "Your dress looks absolutely divine," she added, coming in for a slightly drunk hug and kiss combination. "Stay away from the pineapple cake, we're having someone from the Ministry come and dispose of it according to International Confederation of Wizards Biohazard Conventions," she murmured jokingly in Lavender's ear.

Dean had been wandering around the room for a bit, had paused to look at his presents, swaying slightly with a smile on his face, feeling content, but now he was heading for Susan.

"Hey, pretty lady, wanna dance?" he asked, catching up with her with a bright grin. Dean usually avoided dancing, but he was really at a point of tipsy that he felt utterly carefree and ever so slightly silly. He held out a hand and gave her what he thought was a winning grin.

Susan felt a grin spreading over her face as Dean headed towards her with the sort of adorably unsteady gait usually reserved for newborn giraffes.

"Well hello handsome," she said as he held out his hand and grinned at her with such force and sincerity that she was nearly blinded. "How could I possibly refuse to dance with the loveliest boy in the room?" Laughing, Susan took his hand, and given his unsteady gait and the fact that he was willing to dance in the first place, moved in close to minimise the possibility of any unexpected falling.

Alicia was late to the party. She knew and there was just no way she could have avoided it. Her parents had brought back Liam and Isla after their visit with Alicia’s Nanna since Monday, and when Alicia had mentioned the birthday party to her parents, they had offered to sit with the children until she came back. That had been the last nudge Alicia needed to go, though she had bathed and gotten the twins ready for bed, before she had left for Finnigan’s.

The sight that met her when she stepped into The Roost was far beyond what she had expected and with a delighted laugh she kicked off her shoes and walked barefoot through the sand to the bar, where she deposited Dean’s present – a set of high end brushes that the girl in the art supply shop had sworn was the best there was, as well as a selection of colour pigments. In tune with the atmosphere around her and the music that was playing, she ordered a fruity drink and wasn’t disappointed when the one she got held an honest to Godric paper umbrella. Sometimes a girl just got lucky.

Dominic was glad he'd brought his camera along today. Not only would the first few photographs of the room work excellently in his portfolio, he was also getting some great candids of dancing, drinking and even an attempt at sand-castle building (the sand wasn't really deep enough and they'd given up pretty quickly). Standing by the bar trying to decide what he wanted, he recognised Alicia heading towards him and managed to snap her delighted grin when she was handed a drink complete with paper umbrella and cocktail cherry.

"That's going in the album," he informed her, letting the camera hang from the strap around his neck. Ever since he'd discovered them, he'd never ceased being fascinated by the moving magical photographs. He had far more albums than anyone would think likely. He finally opted for a Red Stripe beer and then moved to join her. "Good to see you, Alicia. No kids in tow today? Probably wise, with all the drinking..." They'd probably have enjoyed the sand, though.

Seamus struggled to get up out of one of the brightly coloured deck chairs. The empty cocktail glass was still cool in his hand and he swayed slightly, the alcohol in that daiquiri rushing to his head all at once when he stood up. The Roost was, finally, practically empty. Even Dominic had gone home - which meant they'd have to take down all the charms tomorrow. Thank goodness the room was soundproofed, as was Seamus's flat.

He made his way through the sand to where Dean was standing, apparently contemplating a midnight(ish) snack by the food tables. "If you're thinking about the jerk chicken or the curry, eat it here. Anything else you can bring up with you." He stood at Dean's side, resting his head against Dean's upper arm. "Reckon it's bedtime."

Dean wasn't sure what, or indeed if, he wanted to eat. He was mostly just staring. Mostly things were pretty much gone. He shifted his arm, sending Seamus' head slumping into his side, and slung his arm around him. "Good plan," he said, grabbing a stray cookie and taking a bite.

"Thanks for the party, was awesome," he said emphatically. He was definitely feeling the alcohol, swaying ever so softly and making Seamus sway with him now he'd caught hold of him. He patted Seamus' side absently.
